Awe yes, this place was the beginning of a wild night and a VERY rough Friday, ha! Here we go. We had started the night off at a different dive bar. Can't remember the name and it's not just because I was wasted, but that definitely ain't helping the situation! Anyway, got a pitcher there, chilled, moved on to good ol' Hyde Park Lounge. Grabbed another pitcher, Elysian Spacedust (not coke) probably. We're in the back on the patio, just me'n'mah boi hanging out. Funny enough, we saw several people this bar who migrated from the same bar that we just came from. One of the gentleman and my friend hit it off, and as we're hanging out in the back, I see the bar lady bringing a pitcher out toward us. No one's out there, just us, and I freaking IMMEDIATELY knew that dude was gonna be the death of us. So now we're 3 pitchers of Spacedust in and things are getting fuzzy. Then the shots start rolling in. Oh Jame-O, you dirty dingo. Used to be a good spot, but not anymore. Bartender was pretty much alone and didn't have any real support/staff on a busy Saturday night. DJ was unoriginal and too loud, meaning tired song selection and I ordered one thing from the bartender but was served something completely different because she couldn't/didn't hear my order correctly. What a depressing, dark dive bar. It is completely dark in there, with no windows to the outside world. It felt pretty stuffy in there and there was a smell. They have 3 flat panel tvs (1 is HD) showing sports and stuff. For entertainment, they have a couple dart boards, a billiards table, a pinball machine, and a video gaming machine. Hyde Park is the last dive bar in or near J Town. Jack's has gone upscale. Bamboo 7 is karaoke central. Hyde Park still opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 2. You can usually find a posse of regulars. The pours are neighborhood strength and the regulars are friendly. No, it's not a place to be seen (it's dark) and there's not much in the way of food, although if you come by during happy hour they do put out a free spread of whatever (meatballs, meats and cheeses). I've only been here a few times, and I don't actually think I've ever had anything more than a soda, since I'm typically the DD, but I love this bar. It's not exactly in the best part of town, but there are definitely worse bars to go to in the area. When you drive up, you see a few Harley's and when you walk in, there are a few more older (NOT OLD) folks in there. Not too many 23 year old visit this bar. The bartenders are always very friendly and pretty quick, and the drinks (from what others around me ordered) aren't too expensive. They even turned the Sharks game on the TV closest to myself and my boyfriend when we asked if they could put it on one of the TVs. When we went to play pool, they came and turned the game on the TV nearest the pool table. Also, the pool table is typically left alone, which means it is almost always open for play. If you want to go out and meet people, this isn't necessarily the bar you go to, but if you just want a good time with your buddies, or your boyfriend/girlfriend, this is a pretty okay bar. I started to stop into this place about a year ago when I was getting food at the Smoking Pig located next door. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleased with my initial and all other visits. Hyde Park is a blue-collar bar with it's own set of regular customers, but it welcomes all. It's not a pretentious, upscale place. It serves drinks to customers. On all of my visits I was pleased with both the selections, the pours and the prices. I've never had a bad bartender. They're attentive, friendly and fast. I've grown really fond of this place. I've always wanted a bar I could call my equivalent "Cheers." It really is like the tv show except there's free wi-fi, which makes my "Hyde Park Lounge" way better than the show "Cheers." I love it here. It's very relaxing and chill. Absolutely one of the best dive bars I have ever been to in San Jose! Every bar tender is so so so sweet, they all have such a warm presence and they really make you feel welcome. Prices are great, the company is great and there's 7 tv's, so your favorite sports game can always be shown! I love when I walk into the bar and Christen greats me with such attentiveness, she always remembers my favorite drinks, and really just goes the extra mile to make sure everyone feels welcome in the bar. This spot is pretty cool, nice music selection, super lotto, pool table, snacks, nice environment, the crowd is welcoming and the prices keep your wallet happy. The bartenders are quick even on busy days. The owners Mark and Serena are friendly too, they sit and chitchat with everyone, they like to get to know their customers. I used to think I liked dive bars. Since the hipster PBR crowd has taken over what used to pass as "dive bars", the true dives are hard to find. The point is, what I used to call a "dive" is now a neighborhood bar. We were looking for a place to grab a drink and to say I'm underwhelmed with downtown San Jose is an understatement. Just then, we passed Hyde Park. And kept driving. We were headed to the usual suspects downtown to pay $12 for a martini while putting up with the bullshit that downtown gives you. I started complaining about bad parking, surly bartenders and bad vibes when my girlfriend suggested turning around for "that bar we passed on Fourth Street." We went back and I'm so glad we did. It clearly is a neighborhood bar and many there knew each other. But we were greeted by other patrons standing in front as well as by the bartender. It was clean, welcoming and fairly priced. Winner.
