Last night I had such a great hair experience with Trish, when I got my tropical keratin done. Thanks to her warm and welcoming spirit, high level knowledge, and expertise in hair, I walked out very satisfied with the hair service. I'm grateful that she always encouraged me to get it done in my previous visits, since I am a loyal VIP member for her unlimited blowouts. Trish was aware of my hair styling routine and how time consuming it was to constantly blow dry my hair almost every morning. Now I don't have to worry about that anymore, because with this treatment my hair will remain silky smooth for 3-4 months (natural ingredients and high quality product) and my blowout time will be cut down in half. I am grateful that I made my decision to get the tropical keratin treatment done last night, because I was easily impressed by how beautiful, silky, and healthy my hair looked. When I say this was the best haircut of my life I am not joking. I went for a cut and partial highlights with Doris and she worked some magic on my shaggy dry hair. She was constantly checking with me to see if the cut and color was to my liking and was fully willing to re-tone and tune up some highlights to my liking. They were nice when I went in but I'm extremely unhappy with the cut and with my experience there. I bought a groupon for $88 for highlight and cut- desperately needed a cut and I had read good things about Doris so I when I called I asked if it would be her and she said yes. I go in and ask for blonde highlights in addition to the haircut. Things were going fine, it took a while but whatever. As she is rinsing them out she upsells me on an all over lightening color/toner for an additional $60 so my hair does not look "mouse-y". In the past when I've gotten highlights this was included. I was a little annoyed that it was just kind of snuck in there at the end but I figured I was there so fine, whatever. Then when it was time for the cut, she tried to pass me off to the male hairdresser in the salon. I said "actually can you cut my hair?" She said "I have another appointment" (another woman had walked in about 15 minutes before) basically, no. Against my better judgement I said ok because Doris assured me it would be good. I told the hairdresser what I wanted and he started working. At the end when my hair was wet, Doris came over and said the Groupon doesn't include a blow dry. What?! What kind of janky ass place lets you walk out with wet hair? This one. At this point I was just so over it (I had been there for 3 hours) and just wanted to leave. The guy said you can cut the rest how you want it when it's dry. Which- no, I can't. I don't have the proper shears and I don't know how, which is why I went somewhere and paid someone else to do it. I don't have curly hair, that's not a thing. I wish I had gotten the blow dry though because after I got home I looked in the mirror and just wanted to cry. I wanted something chic and cool for my new job, instead I look like a 50 year old suburban mom. I will have to go somewhere else to have it fixed. I'll have to wait for that though because the guy took off 3 INCHES in some places even though I said I was growing it out and wanted as little as possible removed. Instead he cut off a lot of hair he didn't need to/I didn't want him to, making it all the same length at the bottom (it had been nicely angled before) with some god awful 80's style nonsense he passed off as layers. It looks as horrible as it sounds. Save your money and go somewhere else. For $172 I got adequate color and a terrible cut. I will not be returning. read more

I came to Yumi because I had to do a last minute manicure for a wedding on Saturday. She was the only one I heard about in the area and decided to come to her. She's an appointment only so I messaged her on instagram the night before and she kindly accommodated. She offers a variety of colors, seriously even more than the typical salon. She was very detailed and made sure that I let her know my requests and that I'm satisfied. Also, her gel manicures are only $21!! It's a steal. Will definitely be back !! read more

I've had Doris cut my hair for the past couple of months, and I must say that it hardly gets better than this. My go-to's are barber shops and such, but Doris gets it right. She knows what I like, and I hardly ever have to steer her in any direction. Hell, I didn't even understand/know the concept of texturizing my hair until Doris got on it! And it's changed my perception of haircuts ever since. I recently had Doris do a perm for me (cause why not, it's 2017), and the results came out far better than I had anticipated. Big up to her for the detailed aftercare as well! Knowing me, I would've ruined that perm right out of the salon. Trust this woman with your hair, I promise you that you won't regret it. read more

Never even made it inside. I wanted to support this place because small business don't usually last in this community. Now I see why. I called the salon to schedule an appointment. She told me to come in and see Yumi at 6:30pm. She stressed that I don't be late, so I made sure to leave my house early. At 6:30 as I was about two feet away she called me saying that it was too packed and if I can come back at 7:30, I live just across the street so I was like ok that's fine! At 7:30 I called and she told me to she was still busy that at 8 i can come and she will take care of me. At 8pm when I called she told me that she was still busy and she's sorry that she couldn't see me, I just hung up on her. At that point I was annoyed. I wanted to try a diff nail spot, but I'll just stick to the one I usually go to. read more

Doris is absolutely amazing. Came in with a terrible color job from a different salon and Doris did an incredible job fixing it up! I've known her for a awhile now, she also gives my mom incredible haircuts. My mom will come all the way from Maryland just to have her hair done by Doris and I come all the way from New Jersey for her. SHE IS SO WORTH IT! We absolutely love Doris. She is so attentive and knowledgeable about hair. As soon as she saw me she knew exactly what needed to be fixed (brassy, ashyness). She completely transformed my hair!! It now looks so much healthier and all the orange tones from the last color job are gone! She is also just the sweetest lady I've ever met and will check in with me about my hair throughout the year!! She is very considerate and honest. Will tell you if that color is not good for you. She knows her colors well and blends them very well. She also gave me a Brazilian Keratin Treatment, which made my dry dyed hair rejuvenate back to life!! This is genuinely the worst experience I've ever had at a salon. Doris is super racist and offensive-- all I wanted was to get out of their as quickly as possible. When she colored my hair she didn't use heat or foils and did a sloppy job. She took less than ten minutes with my blowout and it's a mess. My friend paid for a deep conditioning treatment and haircut on groupon and all she did was the haircut. She was mean and pushy about the tip (like, wanted me to tip more than $40 each which would've been more than 20%). I would not recommend this salon under any circumstances. read more

Doris is so sweet and friendly. I bought a groupon for a full highlight and haircut at iSalon Alphabet City. While I waited, i got my nails done. Appointments do overlap, but if your not in a rush it's worth the wait for Doris. My color was awful and needed a lot of work, she used toner to banish my brassiness, full head of highlights, deep conditioner, haircut and fabulous blow-dry. I walked in to get an ombré and came out with damaged, choppy orange hair -- precisely what I said I didn't want. I came in expecting an "Aveda" salon and products, as was advertised and reiterated over the phone, but it was nothing of the sort. Even when I asked again if she was using Aveda products for the dye, as there were no Aveda products in the salon, she said yes-- I've learned since that the salon would require a specific certification to be using Aveda, which she very doubtfully had. Doris was brusque with me throughout the color job, not talking, and laughing when, while being shampooed, I told her the water was too cold. Once we were done, she broke her silence to get angry at me for "not telling her how much hair I had over the phone." I couldn't believe she was trying to blame me for her bad job. For one, I described my hair as "long, thin, but there's a lot of it," but also, hair dressers' job entails being able to plan their course of color upon seeing the client's hair. She rushed through the job (there was someone waiting behind me briefly, but it was nothing compared to the wait the client behind the other hair dresser endured). And when I was nearly in tears telling her my hair was orange, she insisted it wasn't, didn't offer to do anything to try to fix it, said it would "dry less orange" but she'd have to charge me extra to have it blow dried. Then she still charged me full price THEN asked if I would be tipping in cash when I didn't leave a tip. I called several times afterwards and left a message asking if she would be willing to try to fix my hair and make it right, but she never got back to me. I had to go to another salon and spend several hundred dollars to try to cut up the choppy orange by my roots and try to alleviate the wretched color, and it is still partly orange because it was "so damaged from whatever was put in it, they couldn't risk going back into parts of it without the possibility of me losing hair." This was the worst hair experience I have had to date, and the very first yelp review I have taken the time to write. I can't speak to Doris' ability to cut hair, but I would advise looking at all the glowing, five-star reviews with suspicion because my experience was a nightmare. read more
