Tofu made in house!? Yes PLEASE! The tofu is so soft and mild tasting. Definitely freshly made. The tofu salad is amazing! The greens are fresh and is composed of a mixture of different lettuce varieties. The dressing is superior. Also you HAVE to try the Japanese tacos with snow crab, they are amaze-balls! So delicious, a party in my mouth. :9 On another occasion had the Italian roll. Interesting combo with the salmon and the basil. The salmon was super fresh and high grade quality. This most recent time I ordered the vegetable roll and the spring rolls. I was sad to find out that the spring rolls were already made because I really wanted to add their delicious tofu to it. Nevertheless they were cooked to perfection and very flavorful, would have liked the sauce that came with it to be a tad more spicy, but that is just personal preference. Shame on the service. Izakaya gets the trainees for Big Tuna. My bowl of rice was forgotten, which could be overlooked, but our check came while we were eating dinner. We were going to order cream puffs and green tea cheesecake for dessert, but didn't want to pester the waitress who was obviously trying to get the restaurant customers dumped ASAP. She asked us within the first 3 minutes what we wanted to eat. It was a waste of money and I'll never go back. Stick to Big Tuna where the experienced wait staff works. I come here for lunch once a week when I need my Japanese food fix and because the quality of the sushi is consistently good. The only thing that makes me pass on Izakaya are days when I need to take a quick lunch since wait times can vary drastically. Sometimes it's been only one server for the entire restaurant which slows things down a bit. This recently appears to have been addressed as I see two servers more often than not. I hope that keeps up especially now that it's become a popular lunch spot. My most recent meal here was a nigiri plate which included a textbook-perfectly butchered yellowtail that tasted just as good as it looked. They expanded their menu to include all items from Big Tuna Sushi Bistro which has an extensive list of great appetizer choices. A good menu and sushi bar overall but I would like it even more if they served a more robust miso soup. Not enough dashi, somewhat weak on the miso and often the wakame is still rehydrating when they get it to you. I know that miso soup tends to be the forgotten step child of casual Japanese restaurants but it really shouldn't be! read more

First time I went, everything went well. We had a group of 12 ppl and they were able to accommodate all of us. Even though it was busy, the servers were always checking in on us. We got our food fast (within 30 mins) and it was delicious. The second time we went there was only 5 of us. We basically got the same bento and sushis that we got the first time we came in. The restaurant wasn't busy; however, the servers were no where to be found. TOOK 1 HOUR TO GET OUR MEAL. The food was mediocre this time. So discouraged to write this review. The food here is great. The sushi is some of the best in town. Try the JFC too. Super good. I just left the restaurant after waiting over 20 minutes for water. We watched the waitresses visit the same few tables time after time and completely ignore us. All the while listening to a radio station cut in and out of reception. Our service was the worst my friends and I have ever experienced. If you get a short blonde waitress (didn't give us our receipt that we asked we for, so no name), I'd ask for another. Normally we go to their sister location Big Tuna, which has great service. Though, when we decided to try this location it took 50 minutes before our table was fully served. Being that we tend to order the same dishes when we go out for sushi, we know what to expect. Our tempura fried dishes all came to us cold, 30 minutes into being there (normally out in 10 or so mins). While we were there our waitress fully served 3 tables that were seated roughly 15 minutes after we had been seated. Additionally, one of the tables completely finished their meal and left before we received all of our food. Our waitress purposely avoided eye contact with us, continuously blamed the delay on the kitchen the 3 times she checked on us for water. Along with hanging out around the cash register with coworkers at the front looking as if she had nothing to do. I have been a waiter in the past for a total of 4 years. I know not to blame shitty service on the kitchen staff, that I might add were pushing food out pretty quick. The fact that it took us an hour and 15 minutes before we were able to receive and finish our meal was ridiculous only because in our previous experience it takes a total of 30 minutes. read more

Pretty disappointed the last couple times going to IZakaya. We use to go quite a bit then their food wasn't that great. We've been going to Big Tuna which is the same owner so I'm not sure what's happening. Anyway, went there tonight and we are huge fans of the seared tuna. We ordered three servings and it was half the amount that we usually get! For $14 a plate we should get more than that. My daughter ordered a crab taco and it was the smallest eggplant I think they could find. For a $100 meal I would expect more. Very unhappy with our dinner tonight. Hoping Big tuna doesn't cute potions in half and serves it while it's still warm.... read more

The food wasn't the worst I've had. I do feel as though some of the dishes I got were very under seasoned. The prices are reasonable. However, I don't think I'll be returning simply due to the poor service. We sat for far too long waiting for our check on the patio. Came here for family night, craving sushi and wanting to try something new- co worked recommended, so drove over from Red Bluff. I was prepared for a little bit of a wait as it was Saturday night, the hostess and I'm guessing the owner said approx 15 minutes, turned into about half an hour, cool no big deal, we are seated with no menus at a very small table that's barely big enough to seat 4 (we had 5 total). We ask if anyone was going to be sitting at the corner table as my son's chair will be in the way, they tell us no- 5 minutes later someone is seated there- my son is hit in the head numerous times with people sitting down and the waiters rear end, no sorry, nothing, ew! About 10 minutes into sitting down we finally get menus and waters- another 10-15 minutes go by and the waitress comes by to take our drink order/appetizers, we decided to order a bunch of appetizers to try- edamame, panko shrimp, mixed tempura, stuffed mushrooms, Japanese fried chicken, and we also ordered 2 shrimp tempura rolls and a california roll. The rolls were very small, which no big deal they were cheapies, the JFC was pretty tasteless and possibly frozen and reheated??, the stuffed mushrooms were about the only positive note, the sushi was so-so. Never received refills on our water, and I asked for a menu so I could order dessert and when the waitress came back about 10-15 minutes later I had already decided just to pay so I didn't have to wait any longer. About 60$ for dinner, wish I had dug a little further into past reviews!! A few other things I noticed while I was there that kind of rubbed me the wrong way-- their salad was kept in the drink cooler in a big tub that the waitresses grabbed out of when someone ordered... the soup (miso) came out of a dispenser you'd think was for serving hot chocolate... they had an ice chest (like for camping) they were grabbing the ice out of for drinks... noticed a lot of waiters/waitresses snacking by the window they were grabbing food out of, and not washing hands directly after.. So yes the food was meh, okay, the service was so terrible I won't be coming back! read more

How is this acceptable? I asked for wasabi dressing instead of miso yet they still put the wrong dressing on the salad so I politely asked the waiter to change the dressings for me while I went to the restroom. I left in a hurry and tipped them out well. When I got home I realized I had no salad no miso and no soy sauce so I just paid 15$ a box for only three quarters of my food? Just went in for the first time a couple of weeks ago it was later in the evening and the place was winding down. we had two servers Elizabeth and Denita they both made our experience there amazing. All the sushi was excellent though the rolas are a little smaller than other places the prices are more than reasonable. Been here twice, I felt the ambiance is a little improved at sister site Big Tuna, but the food is pretty much identical and so if I'm in the area closer to Winco/Best Buy, I'll pick Izakaya Ichiban. As sushi regulars, sometimes just getting the fix is more important than the ambiance. I have never had any substancial wait dining at Izakaya Ichiban, there are always open tables. Came in around 6Pm and we were told we could sit wherever we like. Waitress was very sweet and attentive but missed certain things waitresses have with experience such as extra napkins(we each got one paper one for the whole meal) one fork , again not a big deal because she was that sweet and attentive. I really really want to love this restaurant. I have tried it probably a dozen times or more and each time it's a toss up whether or not it's going to be good. The first time I went the kitchen forgot to make my fiances donburi and had to be reminded after about 45 minutes of waiting. The last time I went there (today) I ordered tofu donburi. Ok so here's the deal with their menu, there cooks make or break the menu with their inconsistency. The first few times I got the donburi it was perfect with deep fried teriyaki tofu and sauteed veggies over rice with salad and miso, it's relatively cheap too like 8 bucks. Then all of a sudden the cooks decided to skip the veggies whenever they feel like it, and if you specifically ask for them they charge you an extra 2 dollars...why? Besides the irritating inconsistency with the cooks the staff is always pleasant and apologetic. I would be more than happy to love this place if they just figured out my favorite dish. read more

Awesome service. We had the Bento Box and the Chico Roll. It's now my new favorite roll. I'll definitely come back more often.

We recently moved to the south end of town and went here for the first time a few months ago. We had a good experience enjoying the sushi we ordered. The fish was fresh and the service was good. The stand out dish was the sushi taco appetizers. The "shell" is eggplant tempura folded around tuna or crab for a couple bucks. We have been back several times and always start with those tacos. They have outdoor dining and we tried it out on a beautiful May evening. We have gotten friendly service each time, including when I pick up to go orders. They are expanding into the space next door. Hopefully will be finished the next time we go...and there will definitely be a next time. read more
