We noticed the sign a few weeks ago celebrating their 20 year anniversary and decided to stop in this weekend. It was a Sunday night and it was not too busy. We were well cared for and had a lot of attention. We asked about the name Ichiban because we frequented another place with this name years ago. We found out they do have another location on Oswell. We also learned Ichiban means number one or the best in Japanese. That makes sense why that might be a good name of a Japanese restaurant. There is a good amount of space if you want to come with a large group. The bar area is nice and we saw what appeared to be some regulars stopping in for dinner. The food was good and well made. I really liked all the combinations of rolls. It took me some time to make my decision because they have so many choices. The rolls are around $15 each and they have about 10 that are listed at $11.50 for the anniversary. If you are looking for a quick place to stop in for tasty sushi and rolls, make sure the name is Ichiban. read more

dear friends kept insisting i visit this place...for once the recommendation exceeded the mythology. the staff were friendly from the moment we walked in. song was kind and welcoming behind the sushi bar, and jb prepared some beautiful sashimi. Super friendly gal as hostess/waitress. She served us hot miso soup, edamame, and kept our drinks full. Ambiance could use a modern update but the sushi was good. Son loved the fish sticks- which were actual pieces of fish and not minced. Place was busy, we got our order much later than a table that came in after we were seated and ordered. Watch out for the added gratuity- she added it to our order even though we were a party of 4 and not 5 or larger. A roll we ordered was forgotten and still charged to our bill. This use to my favorite sushi spot back in 2009-2012 and then I moved away for a few years but now that I'm back, my little sister suggested we go the other day and this place is still so good!! Very good menu. Extensive and a little bit of everything. Service was great and on point. Cute little resteraunt where you can see the chef make the sushi from the dinning room. The vibe is very cute. Honestly, everything about our visit went very well. We ordered the moonshine roll, spicy salmon roll and spicy shrimp tempura roll. THEY WERE ALL SO GOOD. Quality and a tasted were a 9 out 10 in my opinion. On top of it, prices were not bad and very reasonable for what you are being served. Overall beyond pleased with my visit. This is the very first sushi restaurant I've ever been to when it was on Ming. Now that it's moved this is the first time that I've been to this location. I have to say everything was really fresh and really good. The waitress was really nice. And we're both perfectly full not stuffed but not still hungry. we came in on memorial day and it was not very busy so I'm not sure how it's like on a regular day. The staff was friendly and great food. Only thing I didn't like about was she forced me to give a tip. I normally give tips on my own and I don't like it when they force me to choose a tip amount. I ended up leaving a 10% but still charged me a 15% tip of my amount. read more

Walking into this place, it had a nice feel to it with cool lights and good music playing. Sat down and we were greeted by the server. She served us miso soup and edamame immediately and took our drink orders. The sushi was good and so was the bento box. I really loved the dressing on the salad. The meat did have a few fatty pieces in the box but I would definitely recommend trying this spot! read more

Operating hours of this establishment states that they close at 9pm. I called at 8:20pm looking to place a pick up order, but I guess 40 minutes is cutting it too close? They informed me they were closed for the night and I couldn't put my order in. What is the point of being open until 9 if you stop taking orders at 8:20? I hate restaurant workers who try to get a head start on cleaning, and close up shop early. This is also one of those establishments that like to be cheap, and have one person struggling to serve the whole restaurant. So that might be the reason for them not wanting to accept any orders. I barely started ordering from this place only recently and I've been happy with their service and food here every time. The food is always cooked perfectly, the presentation is great especially for being to-go orders, and the service is always exceptional. There's no attitude from the cashier as we normally would experience here in town and the prices for sushi are reasonable. Love ordering from here! read more

Not going to lie, whenever I pass this place I think it's closed bc it's so dark haha. It is open and the sushi is good! I get a basic California roll because I don't like raw fish. There is always a large helping of imitation crab, fresh avocado, and the rolls are thick. My partner always gets yellow tail or another fish and (sometimes they run out of certain fish later in the day) which is good because fresh is best! Not sure about the service but calling for take out I've never had an issue! And love the soup! read more

I am here now. I ordered a Rainbow Roll. I have seen better looking Rainbow Rolls but this one holds up under chop stick pressure! Tastes pretty good too. There is the real deal Wasabi that is nice and strong. Not a large place and the Sushi Bar is shut down as it has been for over a year now. Ordered a dragon roll, sashimi sampler, and soft shell crab roll from ubereats. The food and quality was decent...nothing spectacular. One of my biggest pet peeve at a sushi restaurant is when the rolls come out too big. Each of the "circle" was huge!!! And because of this, it falls apart easily and/or needs more than one bite to eat....which causes it to fall apart! What is the reason for this giant piece of roll? The rolls themselves had quite a lot of "filler" (ie the soft shell crab roll had 80% fake crab meat and 20% fried soft shell crab). So disappointing! This place is decent in a pinch as in during a pandemic and you have no way to get yourself out of Bakersfield for better sushi. If this place makes smaller rolls, use less fillers in their rolls, and can roll a roll properly then I might try again. Although it is decent for its price point, so 3 stars! read more

Number One The definition of Ichiban is first or best. I'm not saying this is the best sushi I've ever had, but I will say it is very good. In my opinion there is one main thing I look for in sushi, which is the quality. You can tell if dead raw fish is fresh or old. Sometimes after just one day it isn't as good. This Ichiban has really good quality. The quality leads to the taste, for the most part. Ever notice how almost every sushi restaurant has the same names for their roles.... It's because it is universal. If the sushi isn't good, most likely the quality is bad. Some things may be different, such as the spices and spiciness. I love Spicy Tuna, but the spicy sauce may be different from place to place. Point is everything was really good here and I'd highly recommend trying it out. Prices are good too. read more

Sad to leave a negative review, because we've been coming here for YEARS and today was the worse experience ever. We came to dine in and waited 45 minutes for our order-- they gave an order to another table that came 30 min after us and when we mentioned it as our little guy was hungry the chef threw our rolls he was making and stopped making them. We just asked to take our sons roll to go and paid. Very unfortunate but we won't ever eat here again. The server was SO nice too, always and she always remembered my kids orders, but my goodness the chefs were something else. Very disappointed. I admit I have not eaten here in several years, as their truly filthy tricks finally ran me off. I ordered the All You Can Eat sushi. I was brought four pieces, and was told when I finish that, after a while they'll bring some more. It doesn't take a calculus major to figure the slower you eat, the less you consume. Worse, Ichiban has a dirtier trick of secreting a tablespoonful of wasabi inside the rice where it can't be observed. Once you've taken a bite, you're screaming for water, and there goes your appetite - full up on All You Can Drink Water! This is not the first time I've been shaken out by a sushi restaurant. When you come in everyone says hello, when you are seated you get a plate of the pea pods which are sft and warm ready to eat! Also miso soup. Super flavorful, that was a first for me. Definitely recommend. The sushi was delicious and the macaroon ice cream to end it all , really hit the spot. You have no idea. Super nice and perfect lighting , the taste in music is very chill. OMG the Monster Roll is so big I had to eat it with my hands literally. Two full bites each slice and it's VERY reasonably priced. I went in for a quick lunch I was on this side of town. I go in sit at the sushi bar they bring me miso soup and edamame on the house. It was very nice the waitress got my drink order quick. I ordered a geisha roll in: spicy tuna cucumber out: tuna and white fish and I was expecting it to be better. The sushi chef put way to much Tobiko on my roll. Honestly the roll tasted off or a bit funny but it wasn't the fish, maybe the nori? All the reviews on yelp said this was the place to go for sushi and it was just mediocre. Maybe I came on an off day but I don't think I will be back for a while unless I am on this side of town because I would not make a drive out here for that. Also my sushi chef didn't talk to me.. at all I thought that was a bit weird. Also on a side note my roll would have been way better if there was avocado and house sauce. read more
