I went in for a quick lunch I was on this side of town. I go in sit at the sushi bar they bring me miso soup and edamame on the house. It was very nice the waitress got my drink order quick. I ordered a geisha roll in: spicy tuna cucumber out: tuna and white fish and I was expecting it to be better. The sushi chef put way to much Tobiko on my roll. Honestly the roll tasted off or a bit funny but it wasn't the fish, maybe the nori? All the reviews on yelp said this was the place to go for sushi and it was just mediocre. Maybe I came on an off day but I don't think I will be back for a while unless I am on this side of town because I would not make a drive out here for that. Also my sushi chef didn't talk to me.. at all I thought that was a bit weird. Also on a side note my roll would have been way better if there was avocado and house sauce. read more

The way I felt about this spot, was that I expected better. They make a lot of their rolls out of California rolls, so yeah I have to agree with everyone else; it definitely was basic. I also didn't like the way they were handling my food , probably why my stomach was hurting later on in the night(looked nice but didn't feel nice). I ate all of my food but I wouldn't come back here, there's better sushi places, Izumos is my favorite though. I couldn't believe a lady walked out of there claiming it was the best in town and HER favorite,as I was walking in; I think she really needs to explore a little more if she put that kind of claim on THIS place. I've been to many other sushi restaurants, but I always find myself coming back to Ichiban. The owner is super kind and helpful. I come here either before or after class (being on my way from/to CSUB). I mostly order to go, and I always know what I want, but she is kind enough to give the menu anyway. While I was waiting for my order, she sat me at the sushi bar and gave me a glass of water and edamame. It didn't take long for my order to be ready. I was about a 10-15 minute wait. The portions of the sushi are great! I've been to other sushi places where the same rolls are about $4 more, but only half the size of Ichiban's. The portion size to price ratio is nice. They are more than happy to give you an extra container of spicy mayo/eel sauce if you ask for it. It's never too empty, nor is it too packed, which is why I enjoy coming here. It was difficult to have discovered this place because it was hidden behind Rite Aid and all those other buildings! read more

Do not go to Ichiban, especially the one on 3700 Gosford Rd. I tried the all you can eat and it was horrible. They enforce that you eat all the sushi rice (which is normal for any all-you-can-eat places) but they give you 3x amount of sushi rice! You basically fill up on rice. Then the fish is terrible. They would give you older fish. And the fish is a much thinner slice. Then the owner/waitress said you can only order 1 order per person at a time. It's all you can eat, so you should be able to order whatever you want. Also, they have horrible service. Bringing the sushi to the table took forever and they limit you to an hour. I suggest you try Love Sushi or Toro Sushi. At least you won't get diarrhea there. read more

i've been to the east side ichiban and know of this one but haven't been till now. we chose this place cuz it was open earlier on a sunday then our usual spot. service was good. the food was amazing. nice presentation. very fresh tasting fish. free miso soup and edamame. the spicy tuna had good spice and heat. loved the spicy crab and shrimp roll. we had a dragon roll deep fried for a 1.50 extra and that was pretty tasty. we also tried the snow white. really liked the flavor of that. little sweetness to it to me. california rolls were the usual but good. we also enjoyed the las vegas roll. all in all i liked this place and well more than likely be back for early sunday sushi. read more

My girlfriend and I wanted to get sushi for our 2 year anniversary (since that was what we ate on our first date). So I called ichiban at 830pm (they close at 9) and no answer. I tried getting ahold of them multiple times but the phone just rang. I drove by and the open sign was still on, they were just ignoring calls cause they closed soon. We ended up getting tacos instead cause it was too late to go anywhere else, and I wasn't gonna deal with terrible service like that. This is one place I will keeping my fingers crossed on closing before this pandemic is over. Give a chance for a decent restaurant to open in the area, cause these clowns are a joke. read more

Having been here several times I come back because I'm a creature of habit and they make my roll the way I like it. I usually always get the shrimp tempura roll with soy paper. I love all the sauces they put on top. I also like their miso soup and it's never too salty. The gyoza is always cooked fresh to order and served pipping hot. If you eat there the soup and a bowl of edamame are on the house and great to nibble on while you wait. One of their wait staff members in the past had been a little rude on a few occasions but I haven't seen the one that in question working the past few times I have gone. This is one of my favorite sushi places in town. They have a very extensive selection of sushi, rolls, and teriyaki dishes that are all very good. The only thing keeping this place from a fifth star is the service. Sometimes it can get quite busy and the wait staff is very slow at attending to the table. I underhand that sushi takes a little time depending on the rolls, but I am speaking on the drink orders or the checking in on the tables. If you go at a non peak hour you won't have a problem at all. My favorite roll that is a must try is the Moonshine! It is a giant roll with cream cheese, crabs, crumbs, and amazing sauce. They are also good about adding or subtracting items. Certain sushi places in town do not appreciate when you make an adjustment to their menu. They see the rolls as works of art, and they believe they have made the best possible combination already for you. I can understand that, and they certainly are a type of artist, but just like any service industry, I believe the customer is always right, and if they are allergic or don't like a combination, that shouldn't be a problem. I have not had a problem with Ichiban when it comes to hanging things up a bit. Due to the slow service, I usually just pick up and have the most delicious meal while watching Netflix. read more

Haven't been here in awhile. Huge disappointment!! Downgrading drastically from previous review. Did they change chefs? Ordered: heart attack, dragon roll, fire volcano, mixed tempura. The heart attack, dragon, and volcano all were covered in a thick, sickly sweet brown sauce. I mean COVERED! Couldn't taste anything but the sauce. The nice crunchies that used to top the heart attack were gone, replaced by this swamp of a sauce. Miso soup was only tepid, barely warm. The service was terrible. Hubby got up and walked to another table to get napkins and chop sticks. Waitress didn't even blink. Had to remind her to please bring me water. Not going back! read more

Hubby and I love sushi and we have been looking for places near our home. This is definitely on top of our list now. Must try the #s 1 - 911, 2 - Shrimp Tempura and 13 - Bacardi (baked salmon!). So good. And the service was so friendly and quick. We will definitely be returning!! Update 1/22/2017 Hubby and I are back! And unpleased! The Bacardi rolls with baked salmon top were too baked! We received black, charred salmon on most of the roll pieces. We talked to our waitress about it and she looked stoic. No apology about it. No discount offered. Nothing. Was working out of town and wanted sushi. I usually go to a certain restaurant when I'm here but today I wanted to try a new place! GLAD I chose this one! Very delicious and fresh! I have been craving sushi and Ichiban is typically our go to sushi restaurant. When we arrived and walked in my Husband noticed the B Rating from the local Health Department. I was hesitant because I don't think you should ever eat from a B Restaurant let alone a B sushi restaurant. But we went in and ordered. We had the BSC- Baked Scallop California Roll, if it is cooked it will be ok! We also had Tempura Shrimp and Veggies. My husband had a side salad as well. The Scallops were a little on the fishy side which makes me nervous and isn't good! The waitress was very nice but must have been new. Little joint located behind the Albertsons plaza on white and gosford. Pretty easy to find with plenty of parking. Won't be to hard to not see it. It's also right across from Appalonia dental. For the rest leant itself, it's got a pretty nice and chill atmosphere, clean and not too over the top. Not too loud of an ambiance but the room echoes a bit and people's conversations can get a little loud (like the group that was in front of us). The hostess, when we walked in, just kinda gave us a come in and sit whenever. Anyways, looking at the menu, it's pretty colorful with your typical sushi and rolls. To order, you write it down on their item sheet. We ended up with a Vegas roll, a salmon crunchy roll and a crunchy California roll. I have to say that they are one of the better sushi spots in Bakersfield. Their food is actually tasty and got some good flavor. Lots of meat in the rolls. They also give you some edamame and tofu soup to open things up which is also nice too! However the one thing that disappointed a bit was their tempura vegetable... pretty bland and not coated right. Overall, I'd give this place a solid 4/5 stars. Good quality food, decent taste and good portion. A star taken off for the ok service and for the appetizer. Went to dinner here on a Saturday night and was promptly seated. From the moment we were seated our server/waitress seemed like she was in a rush to get us in/out. Upon taking our orders, she later came out with miso soup (but gave us no spoon to use). It took us 10 minutes to flag someone down for spoons and by the time we got it, our soup was already cold. My table of 3 people ordered 3 rolls and 1 seaweed salad. Only one of the rolls came out with ginger and wasabi on it. We had to ask for wasabi and ginger and even then she only brought out one serving of it on one plate. Then we realize our table had no soy sauce. WTH, kind of sushi place is this? My roll (the kiss of fire) was good, but my overall experience was very disappointing due to the service. For the price of the stuff at this place you would think the service would be up to par, but it simply is not. The food was pricey, but good. Sadly, even though they were not busy (1/3 of capacity) their service was lacking. I'm going to try their other location to see if the service is any better. read more

Tonight i seen some of the worst service possible. After we were incorrectly served the wrong plate our server removed the plate she had given us and proceeded to serve it to another table. The problem with this is my husband and friend had already picked at it not knowing it was the wrong plate. When the server brought the rest of the food we inormed her on what we saw and she ignored us and kept asking who ordered which roll. We then informed a manager, who was very nice, and she informed us it would not happen again and how sorry she was., but then the server came back to the table and just kept arguing with us how it wasn't her fault. Since i work in the restaurant industry i explained that never should a plate be served that has touched another table. She then just walked away. The manager was nice but i feel nothing was done to remedy the situation. We will no longer go back. read more
