Really really fresh seafood! The Toro Toro roll was our favorite, but the rest were delicious too! My kiddo loved the Toro Toro roll, that she stuffed her face full with it. The dragon roll's eel is so well grilled, because the the eel is a bit thinner and better quality so it has more caramelized bits. The Miso Sea Bass was grilled so well that it didn't just flake apart. The service was efficient, and even though there were several tables; the waiter and chef were quick to provide the proper quality of service. Since we loved our last visit we had to stop by here again on our way home. Sadly I was battling a bad case of laryngitis when I called to make sure we would be able to be seated and spoke with Mark. He was so sweet upon arrival and told me it was a good thing that I called since they were planning on closing early but Chef Shin accommodated us. We ordered the Tuna on Crispy Rice, Dynamite, Scallop Hand Roll, Sweet Shrimp and Spicy Tuna Roll. Overall the food was good and Chef Shin was busy at work way past closing time. Food was fresh but I did notice that just like everything else these days, prices have increased considerably. Takashin is a great Japanese restaurant that serves sashimi, nigiri and tempura. We have been here for lunch (seasonal) and dinner many times and we are always more than satisfied with the offerings and delicious, fresh meals. The sushi chef and staff are welcoming. While we had a very early dinner, we were surprised that many more customers are not finding their way to enjoy an outstanding experience here. The mouthwatering sushi was just as good as what we have had in Tokyo. This evening we both decided to order uni as a starter and the same specialty which was a Blue Fin Tuna Plate with tempura, nigiri, and tuna roll. With each bite of the uni and sushi, I'm certain my eyes closed with such delight. The seafood was so fresh and melted in my mouth. It is tucked away in a corner of the Villa Soleil Apartments, but there is plenty of street parking along Palm Canyon Drive. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Went here for dinner tonight. The food is excellent quality. Traditional Japanese which I really appreciate. I don't go to sushi to have Mexican sushi which seems to be the trend in CA sushi restaurants now. It a small place and feels like you are eating in someone's home. I love that everything is made with care and not mass production. Service is very friendly and attentive. I noticed other reviews on food taking a while to come out and price, but the people that are writing these types of reviews don't appreciate quality or culture and should go to the mass produced AYCE places that I avoid. I truly enjoy sushi and had high hopes for this restaurant after reading many positive reviews. One even claimed the food was comparable to what you'd find in Japan. Unfortunately, I took that person's advice, and while I haven't traveled to Japan myself, I have traveled to Hawaii for over 20 years, where I've experienced authentic Japanese cuisine. This restaurant didn't meet those expectations. On a positive note, I appreciated that they didn't offer a lot of rolls, which often represent non-authentic Japanese food. The service was excellent--perhaps (at the time) because my sister and I were the only ones there--but I appreciated the attentiveness. We ordered assorted sushi, a dynamite dish that was watered down with too many mushrooms and not enough scallops, two miso soups, and the seabass dish. I was quite disappointed to find that the seabass was just a pre-sliced fillet for $27, rather than the whole fish I expected. The portion was thin and not worth the price. Four of us went on a Thursday night and were seated right away. The service was excellent--our waiter was attentive, patient, and made the whole experience feel relaxed. The food started off strong: I was impressed that the California rolls were made with real crab instead of the usual imitation. We also ordered miso soup, gyoza, and tempura, and everyone enjoyed the flavors and quality. Unfortunately, things took a turn when our two orders of Chilean Sea Bass arrived. The fish was extremely over-marinated and overcooked--rubbery, not flaky, and completely overpowered by the marinade. I order Chilean Sea Bass often, and this was easily the worst I've had, which was especially disappointing given the $34 price tag. We told our server at least 4x and finally they opened the doors to let the breeze in. It was about 10 degrees cooler outside than it was inside. Went to Taka shin for dinner with three friends. Had the shrimp dumplings and edamame apps. Both were average but worth the money. The four dumplings were shaped like shu-mai dim sum and steamed with a chili oil sauce on the side. I also had the cucumber salad with octopus. Good, but not great. The cucumber wasn't very crunchy but the octopus was tasty. We had the chirashi and yellowtail dinners. The chirashi was reported to be good by my friends and included uni (sea urchin). The yellowtail was fresh and was presented as nigiri and hoso-maki. The tempura, which was part of the yellowtail dinner, was a disappointment. Battered to look more like fish and chip's consistency, it was overcooked and lacked the lightness of traditional tempura. There are several good sake on the menu and a few Japanese beers. The restaurant is clean and the tables are spread out. There is also a sushi bar. The waitstaff are great. Quick, polite, and knew their stuff - especially about the sake on the menu. We were not disappointed! They do sell their sushi by the single piece which we are not used to, so that's something to be aware of. That said, if you're in a party of three that works out much better anyway. ‍ Truly excellent cuts of fish. When it comes to the rolls they keep it pretty simple. We do enjoy trying chef's specialty rolls and they don't have much of that going on. As other reviews have made mention, their sake selection is above par. Our server was excellent. Came here with a group on Friday evening during Splash House weekend. There was no wait and the ambiance was settled and soothing. The table shared a house hot sake. For food, I got to try Tuna(Blue Fin) cut, Takashin Special Sushi, and King Salmon (Fresh) Sushi. The ladies were hyping up the Takashin special and I can tell it was a reason to come back. The cut is divided into two cuts of fish with a small crunch inside and the unexpected kicker is the sliced lemon piece that your tongue and taste buds make you go 'whoa'. The chef was kind enough to make us a seared salmon, or they bill it as King Salmon Sushi. I enjoyed how the chef made it because he added a slight of wasabi right under the fish cut. The service was amazing and the servers were very generous when they refilled our waters and when the chef was kind enough to take our special request. read more

The restaurant is a in a nondescript building on the main strip of town. It's a welcoming spot for all occasions - solo, date night, groups, etc. The staff is super friendly and in classic sushi-style, you can watch the chef assemble your meal from the sushi bar. The food itself is delicious, I've never had a bad meal. This last time I went, I got a seaweed salad, the one piece of nodoguru, a six piece king salmon cut roll, and a six piece yellowtail cut roll - but honestly, try as much as you can! We are fairly new to the area and always have our eyes open for sushi restaurants. We have spotted this one as we've walked past it and finally decided we would head in. They don't have outdoor seating so that is what has kept us away. But Thursday night when we walked by, there were only two other people in the restaurant. We spotted through the window a back booth that would have kept us socially distanced. All of the employees are masked and it seemed fairly safe. So we went in. We do not regret that decision at all! The staff are very kind and helpful. We decided to try the sake flight and our waiter was able to describe the differences we might taste in a way that was really accessible. Very generous pours and delicious sake. Whenever I go back, I will get the last one by itself as it is a dry and smooth sake. We tried various rolls and the shrimp tempura and a few pieces of sushi and everything was fresh and flavorful. As we were debating our final sushi selection, our waiter was able to recommend something that was similar but generally more pleasing to the taste buds and so we decided to go with it. Wow! Taka Shin was truly impressive. I wasn't sure how fresh their fish would be, given Palm Springs is in the middle of the desert, but I was so pleasantly surprised! The fish was extremely high quality and absolutely delicious. Firstly, the food is pricey, but fine for a special vacation treat (or date night etc). Nigiri prices are per piece, with a higher price point than I typically see. I spent FOREVER pouring over the menu because everything looked delicious, and finally settled on the chirashi. This was one of the best decisions I made all week! The bowl was loaded with fish. And not the standard salmon, ahi, and ebi, either.. this bowl contained otoro, king salmon, sweet shrimp, and even uni! There was also some kind of teriyaki cooked fish (I think I remember seeing teriyaki mackerel on the specials menu?) which was amazing! The chef clearly took pride in the presentation of the food, which came together to create an overall spectacular dish. If you are a sushi lover in Palm Springs (and I mean real Japanese sushi, not California rolls and spicy mayo!), FOR SURE give Taka Shin a try. read more

One of my favorite sushi places I've had yet! My girlfriend and I were coming down from Joshua Tree when we decided to stop by for a quick bite and settled here! Conveniently located in the downtown of Palm Springs with accessible parking next to the restaurant. Immediately we were welcomed and sat down with some waters. Usually we're both a little nervous to try raw sushi, but we both decided this was the perfect place to expand our taste buds. We settled with a dragon roll (a classic) as well as their Takashin special! We both agreed saying this was one of the best sushi spots we've ever had, and you could absolutely taste the freshness. But the star of the show was the service! Unfortunately we did not our server's name, but he was cracking jokes with us while also helping give us chopstick tips and sushi recommendations. There is a sushi bar but it was already occupied by other customers. We got seated right away next to the entrance. The place was very clean but the sushi bar looked a little cluttered with napkins and cutlery. The menu is printed on standard paper that's stapled together and the items have no description. Not a large menu but decent selection. 4/5 - Soft shell crab karage - it was a tad on the a small side but the sauce went well with it 3/5 - Crunchy dragon - I wasn't sure what made this crunch since the spicy dragon also had the crunchy bits on top. It did not taste as good as spicy dragon. 4/5 - Spicy dragon - My favorite of the two rolls. Very nice and has a kick to it. Not quite sure what else made it different than crunchy dragon but I definitely prefer this one more. 4/5 - Sea bass - looks a little bland and small but it was actually quite tasty. This should be your go-to sushi spot in Palm Springs. It's the best quality, presentation and service of all the sushi restaurants I've tried in the desert to date. First, the setting and design of the restaurant is prime mid-century eye candy. Dining inside makes you feel like you are in a painting like "Nighthawks." Love it. The menu variety is good with lots of options in rolls, sushi and sashimi among other traditional dishes. The prices are fair and on point. The service is truly outstanding - two guys were waiting on the tables with one individual who went above and beyond to ensure we had a great dining experience.
