We visited Happy Sushi on Sunday, August 16, around 6:30 PM. Unfortunately, there was nothing particularly "happy" about the experience. A friend who is visiting from out of town and I decided to go out for sushi and were looking forward to a nice dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The moment we walked into the restaurant, however, I noticed a very strong and unpleasant odor that smelled like sewage, a drain, or something rotten.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I mentioned it to both my friend and our server as soon as we arrived. My friend didn't notice it immediately, so rather than make an issue out of it, we sat down and tried to give the restaurant a chance. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Within a few minutes, though, the smell became impossible for me to ignore. I had completely lost my appetite.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Shortly afterward, my friend noticed it too and commented on how bad the odor was. At that point, we decided we simply couldn't eat there and told our server we wanted to leave. Unfortunately, an appetizer had already been ordered. We asked if it could be canceled, explaining again that we were leaving specifically because of the odor, but were told that they had already started preparing it. Rather than argue, we paid for the appetizer and left without eating dinner. What was especially disappointing was that the manager appeared to be within earshot of the entire conversation and never came over to acknowledge the issue, apologize, ask what was wrong, or offer any solution. I'm not someone who enjoys complaining at restaurants, and we weren't looking for free food or special treatment. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We simply didn't want to eat sushi in a dining room that smelled strongly of sewage/drain odor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Restaurants can have plumbing problems. Things happen. But when the smell is strong enough that customers lose their appetite and decide to leave, I would expect management to take the concern seriously rather than insist on completing and charging for an appetizer the customers no longer want because of the condition inside the restaurant. We paid, left, and found somewhere else to have dinner. Unfortunately, we won't be returning.

Horrible service, gross food handling, and unauthorized charges! I placed a pickup order 20 minutes in advance, and 10 minutes later I got a text saying it was ready. When I arrived, the restaurant was completely empty. Despite being the only customer, the front staff asked for my name----three separate times, making me sit down and wait each time while my order was supposedly already finished. I only get a 30-minute lunch break, and I wasted 20 minutes standing there with zero updates or communication while the staff just chatted and took their sweet time. What made it infinitely worse was watching the person cutting fish openly sneeze directly over the fish while laughing with the front-of-house staff. They didn't change gloves, didn't wash their hands, wiped their nose right on their shirt sleeve, and kept cutting raw fish. It was completely unsanitary and repulsive. To top it off, I requested extra ginger and cucumber on the side for my baked salmon roll, assuming they would tell me if there was an additional fee. Instead, two hours after leaving, I noticed an extra charge hit my card without my authorization or consent. If I had been told it cost extra, I would have gladly declined it. Just because it's the slow season in Palm Springs doesn't mean you can treat the locals who live and work here with zero respect or basic courtesy. This place has seriously fallen off. Avoid!

I would avoid this place if I were you. I came here to have a good experience and the server simply ruined it. I asked for the Alaska roll which comes with salmon. When my order arrived it wasn't the Alaska roll, I asked the server and he "no, it is trust me, the Alaska doesn't come with salmon." If you look at the menu, there's a picture of the Alaska roll literally with salmon on top. I asked once more and then he said "my bad, I'll change it because I put the wrong roll on the system" Ok, then after I asked for my bill he simply said he couldn't change for the Alaska roll in the system and he would have to charge me 3 dollars extra. Mind you, the Alaska is $18. He said I would have to be charged $21 for his mistake and that "he got me next time with discounts." However, I am not from the area, I was here to have a good experience. Do you think he cared? He said "don't worry I'll remind your face, I got you" The amount of "I fucked up" I heard, no professionalism, nothing. No manager, no one came to talk to me. I paid my bill but tell me, how is that even fair to your customer? They simply don't care about customer service at all. Not worth it!

Chicken terriyaki bowl and miso soup as seen from above

Happy Sushi is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. It has become our favorite go-to place for take-out chicken teriyaki bowls ($14.00) and miso soup ($4.00). The chicken teriyaki bowl is a generous portion, always filled with plenty of chicken, always tasty and never disappoints. The miso soup is a small bowl but also always tasty. The food comes nicely packaged, hot, and is always ready when they say it will be. Take-out dinner for two was $36 for the food plus a 3% credit card surcharge ($1.08) and then tax of $3.44 for a total of $40.52, very reasonable price for dinner for two by Palm Springs standards. If you are looking for a savory chicken teriyaki bowl dinner for take-out, give Happy Sushi a try.

Consistently delicious, family owned restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great variety of food, great portions, tasty, friendly service and comfortable interior.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A local favorite for sure.

    Amigo Roll
    Cyn C.

It was okay, my date picked the oysters and the salmon roll. I choose the amigo roll and a scallop hand roll. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was okay as well not too fancy and not too bummy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was also okay, they were not as attentive as I would have loved them to be. Overall okay if you want some quick sushi.

This place is fabulous! No matter what time I come in, the service is fast and fresh and delicious. Get the truffle salmon sashimi as soon as you walk in. You will want to take a bath in that delicious truffle sauce. The baked salmon roll is delicious. Just a little bit of spice mixed with the eel sauce gives that pop of flavor. Everything else here I've tried is wonderful. I cannot say enough about this place and I'm so glad it's here. Also, there is a great big parking lot behind, so don't bother on the main drag out there. Happy Sushi equals happy me!

    Eel nigiri
    Adam S.

First time! The sushi was good. I didn't have anything super "fresh fish" style, but the eel nigiri and the Philadelphia roll I had were very nice. The eel was wonderfully tender, and the roll was lovely. The roe was bright and flavorful, and the rolls had good structural integrity. The service was quick and friendly! We were waited on by a couple different people, and both were attentive and well mannered. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is a bit dim & the ambiance is casual and comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Space is a bit tight between tables and in the walking space, but it's manageable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Cockroach on floor
    John J.

I have been coming to happy sushi for over five years. I am a local. I love coming here and I love their Palm Springs roll and their hot sake. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However, today I was having lunch and there was a cockroach on the floor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I notified the staff and they said that the owner has Pest Control and there's nothing they can do about it as it's in their walls and It's in their ceiling. They're everywhere but they're not "food or in the drinks". I showed my server and he did nothing to accommodate me and just went on to explain that this is normal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It completely grossed me out and I could not eat anymore and I had to leave.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I paid the bill in full - was not comped or anything. And I got out of there. Very sad as I use to be a regular at this Palm Springs downtown restaurant.

The servers were really friendly here. The food came out within a good time. The food was good and as expected. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was nice and clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Jalapeño Bomb and Deep Fried Philly
    Andrea G.

I am baffled at the rating this sushi joint has because it's a false reflection! This place is amazing! So much that it's one of the few places I eat sushi from! This time I ordered a bulgogi bowl and while it was good, I found the food to taste dry, perhaps because the skillet dried it out? Not worth $20. Next time I'd like to try the chicken teriyaki option. The service is quick and pleasant!

    Sushi combo 2 nigiri
    Hnin T.

Came to visit Palm Springs for a visit and this sushi place did not disappoint. The staff was so kind and very helpful. The ambiance was nice and cozy. The food was delicious. We ordered lots of food and it was all so good. The sushi combo 2 I got yellowtail, salmon, and albacore instead of tuna and it was delicious. The scallop appetizer was yummy too but it's a little sweet for me. The fried green bean was yummy alongside with the jalepeno popper. Definitely will stop by again.
