I had a groupon for this place so decided to go here on 3/10/18. I have been to the Ike's at Redwood City and redwood shores before so I'm familiar with the brand. This place is in a very convenient location near downtown San Mateo and right by the freeway. The parking lot is small but you can find street parking depending on the time of the day. When you go inside you are greeted right away by an employee. It is clean and has several tables for you to enjoy your pick of sandwich. The quality of these sandwiches are amazing and never disappoints. I don't think I have tried one that has been a disappointment. If you have never had one before this is a must go place in the Bay Area. If you have had one before, then step it up and get it extra dirty or add mozzarella sticks etc. read more

This place used to rock best sandwiches in town, not anymore. Went there today and got both sandwiches on the order wrong. No bid deal, I'll eat it right. Went to eat the sandwich only to find two small pieces of chicken on a chicken sandwich. The sandwich also had minimal toppings and was basically like eating a loaf of bread. I've been an ikes follower ever since they opened back in San Francisco in their tiny store front on 16th but much has changed for the sandwich franchise as the quality has gone down tremendously. I called to place an order and stated my order twice, when I arrive to pickup they forgot to make one sandwich but I wasn't too stressed as it was completely empty and they shouldn't take too long to make it. I repeated my order to ensure it was correct and one of the guys said its as you ordered it. I pick up my four sandwiches soon to find out when I get to work to eat it all the sandwiches are made incorrectly. The bread, the pickles,no pickles etc it was a complete mess! Everyone of us were completely disappointed with our sandwiches it was nothing to what they wanted. The Spiffy Tiffy I got from this Ike's was not as saucy as the sandwiches I've gotten over the years from other locations. The line was fairly long around 11am on a Saturday, and it took 15-20 minutes to receive our sandwiches. By far the best part of the sandwich was the sourdough roll! I don't get the Dutch Crunch fanaticism--I'm a Bay Area girl through and through and sourdough will always have my heart. The bread was springy and had a very gently toasted outer layer, and was still easy to bite through. The sandwich included a generous portion of tender shredded chicken, and more importantly avocado. $10+ is more than I would like to spend on a sandwich, but it seems like that is the price these days for anything more fancy than your average grocery store or deli sandwich. So I ordered online and got the Gluten Free bread. When I picked it up I asked the guy if it was prepared in a different area and had different utensils then the non-gluten free stuff. I placed my order on Eat24 and it gave me the estimated time of pickup. I arrive there a little early and had no qualms with waiting. Please note that this is located in a little plaza with limited parking and the actually storefront space is on the smaller size and it is ALWAYS busy during lunch. I totally understood all this. It's like an adventure. I'm standing by the area to pick up and i confirm with one of the workers that i was there to pick up 2 orders: one for me and one for my coworker. Well they had my order ready to go but for some reason there was a delay in my coworker's order. I'm not sure if they overlooked the ticket (because we ordered at the same time) but for whatever reason they hadn't made hers yet. They were very apologetic with the wait. Great place for picking up a quick lunch. I come here at least once a week. My favorite sandwich is the Bill Walsh (Turkey, avocado & havarti) on dutch crunch. The price is reasonable ($7.99) and the sandwich is huge. I love that they toast it too. There are so many menu options to choose from that it can be overwhelming so I just stick with what I know. The parking lot can be annoying. It is always full during lunch. And there are always sketchy people just hanging around along the wall. It gets kinda creepy for a lady parking alone. I am not sure if it is the 7-eleven or the donut shop that attracts these people to hang around all day here. read more

I had just visited this new location this past week with the hubby to redeem my free b-day sandwich! What i LOVE is the location wasn't right on B street or the other really crowded streets, but rather a few blocks before it inside a tiny strip mall that had it's own parking lot! The not so good, it's smaller and has significantly less seating than the other locations, however, that's not necessarily a bad thing when there are virtually no waits or lack of seating in the evening! This place is good but they have to do something about the surcharge, literally! Any general manager or regional managers reading this, you have to know it's shady having your employees sneak in an extra $.75 to pay for their benefits instead of it coming out of the prices of the sandwich. And you guys have a sign that says so, but can easily go unnoticed, but the sign says in tiny letters that customers can ask not to pay the surcharge which kinda looks bad on the customers part and your employees are more prone to get yelled at by a customer who paid the surcharge unaware of it. Upon entering the store, the whole staff was friendly and amiable. The cashier was nice and informed us that on purchase of a sandwich, you get a canned soda and chips. Welcome to San Mateo Ike's! We were there during their soft opening which had some hitches, but it's understandable because it was training time. It's a bit hard to see from the street and I'm sure the lot will get packed once the word is out. One of the servers with the Scottish accent was the best. We already know Ike's makes bomb sandwiches, but she made our experience that much better. I've only been to Ike's 3 times total (1st at this location), but I love the Jaymee Sirewich. I even tweet Jaymee Sire, the ESPN sportscaster/chef, when I order that sandwich. It's fried chicken drenched in diff'rent sauces and veggies to your liking. I swore the one in SF was bigger, but the taste is undeniable. I'd give this place a 5 on a return visit after a couple of glitches are cleaned up and even though the prices could be a bit cheaper, it's worth paying for. read more

Bad sandwiches really upset me- probably because when I'm buying one for $9, that I could have made 10x better, I feel like an idiot. First- I find it odd that a sandwich shop wouldn't offer sliced bread. Second- It was unclear what options I had in building my sandwich. Great ervice, super fresh ingredients and the price is right at about $8- $12 bucks depending on the sandwich and fixings. The place has a ton of sandwich options... everything from the usual suspects like ham, roast beef and turkey to cheesesteak subs, meatball subs, chicken parmesean and a number of vegetarian and vegan options too. I ordered the "Home for Thanksgiving" sandwich and it was absolutely delicious: Dutch crunch roll, shaved turkey grilled on a flat top, havarti cheese (love), cranberry sauce and Siracha hot sauce with tomato and lettuce. It's really hard to understand the hype around Ike's when you're an NYC transplant. When you've grown up having had authentic deli experiences your whole life, it's really hard not to compare. That said, Ike's reminds me a lot of the sandwich chain, Potbelly's, or maybe even an improved version of Quizno's. I'm really not sure why people in the Bay are so crazy about Ike's... it's good, but not THAT good. It's not an authentic sandwich in any way, and so it sits in the same category as the other sandwich chains (though perhaps at the top of its kind)... With a voucher, so worth it. But without one, I'd say not worth it... it's not a gourmet sandwich with high quality ingredients, so why is it priced so high?
