Everything at Immm Rice and Beyond was so friggin good...it was hard to stop from eating myself into gluttony. Immm is located in Uptown's Viet Town right at Argyle & Broadway. But don't let the location fool you! This is a straight Thai restaurant with an emphasis on Thai street foods. Don't get me wrong, I love me some pad see ew and pad thai, but Immm is so much more than all that! You can find unique Thai foods in a completely non-threatening way and be introduced to all their glory. What's even better, they will give you a taste of many of them before you order the dish. Me personally, I dive right in and don't need a taste! I want to experience the dish fully. That being said, some dishes are offered in a sample size which is fantastic for trying many items at one time. Pro-Tip #1: Don't quote me, but word on my street is Immm means full in Thai. My plan is to work my way through every dish offered but so far I've had: -Mhoo whan - Carmelized Pork Belly $6 for sample size ($9 for full size portion) - Huge portion and it's legitimately just good pork belly sitting in its juices. For any pig fan, it simply does not get any better. -Kai loog kuey - Son In Law Egg's $6 for sample size ($9 for full size portion) - Fried hard boiled eggs in a tamarind sauce with crispy shallots strewn throughout. My friend and I both loved these! The sample size portion came with 4 halves which was a good sized portion for us as a compliment to the rest of our meals. -Pad Nam Prik Pow w/ Pork (roasted chili jam, onions, peppers, roasted chili) $9 - I was worried I was going to burn my face off but this dish was actually not very spicy at all. There was a bit of heat but it was completely tolerable and only added to the flavor. Loved this meaty dish. Pro-Tip #2: BYOB! I'll eventually make my way through the menu...and get to the dish I'm most scared of...Gaeng Tai Pla, made with fermented fish guts. Eek. This is a restaurant that is really great to eat in person, but I do not recommend getting take out. The portions of the dishes are so tiny, you will be left severely disappointed if you wanted leftovers or to share with someone. I felt like I wasted so much money too once I got my food delivered. I was honestly shocked when I opened the containers of our Tiger Cry, tom kha soup, and pad thai. Overall, most of the dishes didn't taste good either which makes me sad because I've had many good experiences here in the past in person. I spot this place two days ago when I was going to another place, the Logo put me off but I came back to make sure. I like Thai probably least of the Asian foods but this place is really pretty good. It changes my opinion a bit. I went back because when I looked it up I found references to it as one of the best in Chicago. To me it was a challenge. I had the cashew chicken with the Jasmine rice, It was as good as any and better than most. Even the rice was better than most. The crown to me was the desert. I had the Thai Tea ice cream. It was wonderful. If I was dating and wanted to impress someone I would take them here for the food but specially the ice cream. It is priced average and the place is comfortable. Yum. I had a rather glorious lunch here today. The only reason I'm leaving off one star is that, as a vegetarian, this is not a very inviting menu. That said, the food that I had seemed genuinely more authentic than other Thai places I've experienced (hence the lack of vegetarian options, I presume). If you are a strict vegan, I'd take a pass on Immm. I needed something soothing on the throat and a sinus-opener. I got the tom yum soup to start. It took a rather long time to prepare, but was well worth the wait. I would say th is was the best tom yum I've had (they cannot make it vegan, but I could not really taste the shrimp paste). I did not request spicy, however, it was the spiciest tom yum I've had. I got it with vegetables, and it came perfectly blended with carrots, broccoli, onion, galangal, tiny and tasty mushrooms, and plenty of cilantro on top. Loved it. My favorite Thai place in Chicago, truly authentic flavors. I usually have the lunch plate where you can try different items all at once. It's of great value and everything is delicious. The green curry chicken with bamboo shoot is my absolute favorite. I'd recommend anyone to try Kao Tom Madt if you are already a fan of Mango and sticky rice; the way the banana tastes is just beyond words. No doubt the place is ideal for a quick lunch. I was in a rush today and had to take my dessert to-go. I'd still prefer dine-in because of the lovely decor. Stopped in for their lunch special of ordering two side dishes over rice. Their curries are premade and showcased in large cafeteria tin trays. They do offer sampling of their curry soups! We've opted for the Paa Lo and Panang Mhoo. Paa Lo is a mildly sweet soup base with five spices, fried tofu, hard boiled eggs and small cubes of tender pork belly. This stuff is beyond this world! Panang Mhoo is thinly sliced pork meat slowly cooked in a sweet and spicy panang curry. Overall, Immm Rice and Beyond definitely steps up to the plate when it comes to authentic Thai cuisine. The staff is extremely friendly in helping you discover your favorite Thai dishes. Give them a try--I bet you'll like it just a much as I have. read more

Man, if I lived closer, Immm would be a serious problem. I love the lunch plate deal. One entree for $8, two for $9.5, or three for $11 is very hard to beat. Perfect for indecisive eaters whose eyes are bigger than their stomachs. AND you can sample at the food bar! AAND we are not talking about small portions! They give you a lot of sauce if you get the curries/stews. So the rice is super yummy, and I shamelessly asked for a box for just the rice leftover. I personally got the paa lo (braised pork belly with a hard-boiled egg) and the gaeng kiew whan gai (green curry chicken). They were both awesome and got a wonderful spicy kick to it. My partners was a little more bearable but felt we still got bites with not great tastes that we called it early. The coffee was tasty though. The waitress was also not friendly. We were originally wanted to go to our usual Vietnamese place but the exterior of Immm was eye catching and as nobody was against Thai food we went in. The interior matched the exterior in terms of design and vibes with lot's of fun little details. We got pad thai, khao soy (chicken curry with fried egg noodles), gaeng tai plah ( the mackerel and veggie stew) and green curry chicken. Pad thai was good, and khao soy was not bad too although a bit greasy and the crispy fried noodles were a bit too much in the bowl and overpowered the rest of the ingredients a little bit. On the other hand however the mackerel and veggie stew was honestly so disappointing. It was not as hot as expected of any stew and even though the waitress said it was very spicy -which I would have loved, it was not that spicy and just tasted bland. It had small and big plate options so i opted for the big plate as i was quite hungry, but the portion was not really big, if anything it was quite small, i can't imagine how small the actual small plate is. Will I come again? I don't know, but if you do I'd suggest that you stay away from the fish dishes - which aren't many anyway. read more

Delicious! My friends and I were exploring Andersonville and had a craving for Thai. I looked up good places on Chicago Eater and saw that Immm was nearby. It was a good call! We ordered the Poh Pia Todd and the Jiaozi to start and they were so good we had to split the last egg roll three ways since everyone wanted more. I went basic and just got Pad Thai, which I thought was delicious. When I see a restaurant with such high ratings and high review count, I become skeptical and must try it. So try it I did, and well... they're right. This place is UH-MAZE-ING. Authentic Thai street foods next to your classic Thai favorites with great descriptions, fun atmosphere, good prices, friendly staff make for a foodie experience we all want every day if we can get it. You know there is something special going on when you can get excited over the drink options alone. If they can find a way to chain this place, they should. I started with the milk matcha iced tea served in a simple mason jar glass with super crushed ice. Crushed ice like this is a luxury you forget you want until you have it and are like wow I love crushed ice, elevating my drinking experience. We ordered two main dishes, the Pad Thai because it's an American Thai staple and i wanted to see what theirs was like. So good. And the star of the evening Pad Prik Khing was a slightly spicy curried gravy with seared green beans and in our case tofu. We ordered sticky rice on the side that came in a beautiful straw canister. Yum yum yum! Immm is one of a kind, from its food to their dining style. It's got a half restaurant half cafeteria thing going, with the cafeteria half serving up Thai street foods and the restaurant half serving up appetizers and other small eats. Most of the menu items were foreign to me, given many Thai restaurants are quite Americanized nowadays. I was glad they offered samples of their food up at their counter, all you need to do is ask. After much sampling and deliberating over the menu, we ordered the tom thai som tum (beginner papaya salad) and a platter with paa loo, pad pak, and larb mueng with khao mun (Chinese 5 spice stew, sautéed veggies, and minced pork/entrails salad with ginger and chicken rendered fat rice). Since some of the food are cooked in a big pot, it is pre-seasoned, so you can't change the spiciness or its ingredients if you have any restrictions. So be careful, because Thai foods are known to be spicy. The minced pork/entrails salad was my favorite, the heat/sour/sweet flavors were well balanced, its nothing I've ever had before. It was a bit too spicy for me since it came out if the cafeteria side with the one pot cooking but then again my heat tolerance is low. The papaya salad was fresh and nicely seasoned, we ordered it at two chili spiciness, that's just enough for us. The five spice stew, i can taste the Chinese spice well but it was a little two sweet for me. The ginger/chicken rice was very aromatic, a nice addition to the dish. However we added that for $3 extra substituting plain rice, it was nice to try but I'll stick with just rice next time. The sautéed veggie was a nice vegetable addition to the plate, that's all. Overall, food had some hits and misses. 3.5 stars but rounding up for their uniqueness. Didn't need another reason to visit the Argyle area? Too bad... A charming place tucked away off of the main Argyle thoroughfare, Immm serves traditional Thai street food. The portions are slightly smaller, and meant to be shared among the table. I've been here a few times, and their lunch menu is wonderful -- offering tastes of up to three of their menu items for a super reasonable price. That is to say, two menu items, because one of the spaces should always be reserved for their tamarind curry. They don't shy away from the spices, though if you're nervous, you can sample most of their dishes at the window. Both their E-saan and Sai Oua sausages are delicious, though the Sai Oua may seem a bit dry if you're not used to it. You should probably try it anyway. They have a few classics like pad thai and pad see ew, but their menu mostly consists of more unique items inspired by street food. The BF and I ordered the following to share: Cha yen (Thai iced tea) -- Amazing, not too sweet like how some other places do it. I feel like I didn't get that much though in terms of serving size. Kuay tiew ruea with beef (sample size) -- Aka "boat noodles." For some reason it was outlined with a box on the menu so it seemed extra important lol. The menu describes it as "thin rice noodles in spiced pork soup." I had never tried kuay tiew ruea before so to me, it tasted like super concentrated pho with that same fragrant flavor profile. It was a bit too salty/savory alone so I ate it with rice. Khao soy -- My favorite dish of the night. It was a curry and noodle bowl with tender pieces of bone-in chicken, plus other stuff you can read about on the menu. The noodles and chicken made the dish super hearty yet they balanced out the savory flavors of the curry. I would definitely get this again when I come back! Pad thai with tofu -- Best pad thai I've tried in Chicago, hands down. It just tasted....right. Incredibly fresh and flavorful, great balance of sweetness and savoriness. Gaeng tae poe (sample size) -- Aka tamarind-red curry with pork belly. Tastes like it sounds, sweet and spicy. The pork belly was really tender and delicious. I'd recommend eating this one with rice too. Prad nam prik pow with beef -- Probably my least favorite dish of the night, not because it tasted bad, but because it was a pretty basic veggie stir fry dish in my humble opinion. Also, the curry station had food that has been prepared for hours. I was there during lunch hours but can't imagine trying to eat that during dinner hours that's been sitting there since the morning.
