It's intriguing to find a Korean Fusion restaurant in Annandale, Virginia. Although the food was good, they were trying to replicate the appearance of the past. However, they need to improve their server skills and the quality and arrangement of their food. I am going to highlight what they do well first before writing the review. I hate writing a 3 star review because as a fellow diner, if I see anything below 3 stars, I might end up not trying the place. The good: - Service: courteous, clean, accommodating. Tock charge 20% service when you book the restaurant. I feel the quality of service definitely deserve that or even more. - The place is clean from the dining table, the floor, to the bathroom - The ambience: You feel that the crowd is there but you can still talk and listen to your date or friends. The (not so good) - When I book, I was thinking this is something that is comparable to Hiraya or Nasime. Elevated everyday Filipino food or Japanese food. I was imagining elevated Korean food because the picture that other yelpers are taking. Abalone jook, Bo ssam, those kind of thing. But, it was more Asian fusion and the Korean food kind of lost in translation Like they are doing shrimp toast with Indonesian sambal or Fried chicken katsu rice. These two definitely are fusion but at least they are good and well executed. The toast is crispy and the chicken easily cut just with forks But then, they have duck breast with spinach, with mushroom with doenjang sauce with baguette crisp and burrata. Not even sure if this is supposed to be a make your own bruschetta or you just eat everything separately. Taste wise is good. Nothing wow. More of a confusing dish And EVERYTHING except for the shrimp toast is shareable dish. But the dish is not even big enough to be shareable or communal. It is a tiny plate and sometimes they are in enclosed high bowl making it harder to share. For instance, they serve octopus dish. The dish is just one tentacle of octopus which probably less than half of a straw lengthwise and it is supposed to be shared. Also, I never heard of shared chicken katsu curry. Like it make sense for seafood pancake or rice cake to be share but the dish here doesn't even make sense to be shared. To recap of the whole review. A friend of mine brought me here for a special occasion. I will say upon entering the establishment the front entrance was lacking some inviting energy. Instead it looked like the place went of business as it was all black with no logos on the glass. The front door was very difficult to open due to needing repair. I watched a handful of guests try to open it thinking it was locked only for a staff member to walk up in order to open it for them. I did enjoy and connect with the style & vibe of the place. Loved the jazz music playing with the soft sensual lighting. When I received the cocktail menu I shocked how expensive they are, ranging from $15-$18. Too expensive for the location & establishment. Now the 1 thing that really started the meal off on the wrong foot was when our 1st dish arrived. I asked my friend where the other portion was as our server took it to the next table. It took us a min to realize each course is to share between 2 guests. That changed the vibe of the meal as that Is not something I personally enjoy doing. I want my own as splitting between 2 can sometimes make one eat more fast while the other is upset cause they didn't get enough. My friend told me he must have overlooked that each course is shared. From start to finish I was say each course was delicious. The steak course was a tad overcooked but still tender enough to enjoy. To call the mixed greens a course I felt was a stretch. My favorite I'd say was the Udon. It was like an explosion of well mended flavors & textures. The Ssam came in 2nd. It was perfectly cooked. The walnut ssamjang was delicious & paired nicely was that added crunch. My least favorite course was the soy marinated shrimp. The beef belly under the shrimp was not needed as it didn't add anything to the dish. It actually took away as it was bland as can be (no salt/seasoning). When you're paying a premium at least add an extra shrimp or 2 per person as that was a really weak & tiny course. 1 shrimp is a tease. In the end I was still hungry, craving more. Small portions, no pallet cleanser in between dishes, no desert & expensive cocktails. If I were to split every course in half to what I ate, it really isn't that much food for $65. Hidden gem! Had a wonderful tasting menu -- at a shocking $65 for a really great, well rounded and well portioned meal. Located in a small strip mall, once you enter it's informal, romantic and quiet; with a projector of lights like stars and jellyfish on the wall. It was very quiet that night being only one of two tables there. Everything was really interesting and if you love Korean food, you'll love the spin on all the dishes. If any critique, I'd say the food can be a touch less salty and to cap with some sort of small dessert. For a party of four, almost all the items were split as paired sharing, except for the duck wrap which we shared as one group. Also would have loved mocktails on the menu! I really enjoy Incheon - This is my second time visiting, and have gotten to have 2 of their set menus. There is a little bit of overlap with the last menu, but the dishes are tweaked, so it's nice to have something new. The standouts for me on the current menu are the Ssam & Dduk. I love the flavor of the Dduk with a subtle curry taste. The Ssam provides a nice freshness and contrast of flavors. There isn't really an upscale Korean restaurant in the Annandale area, so this is a nice changeup. Justin is a really nice guy and easy to communicate with through email if you have any questions. This pains me to write, but my experience at Incheon was not what I expected. After so many positive reviews and Instagram posts, I was expecting magic. I had to pay a non-refundable, $70 to reserve a table for a Friday night. Upon entering the restaurant, my partner and I opted for the beverage pairing which was composed of wines. A primary aside, their choice of wines for each course was odd, so say the least. The first course (shrimp toast with peach sambal) was very tasty, however, we were surprised by the size and how heavy the dish was. We hypothesized that the following dishes would be small to compensate (which was accurate, to our dismay). The "chefs treats" between courses were some of the better dishes. The oysters had a delicious sauce and the vegetarian tartare was amazing. The dishes that interspersed them were less enticing. The Burrata dish was weird. On the menu, it seemed odd to have such an Italian inspired dish, but we were hopeful. The Burrata had lemon zest on top, which was tasty, but the sauce was too sweet. The mushrooms and spinach were fine. Not good. And the bread was strange. Too thick and not toasted. Not a fan. The pork belly had little to no seasoning. It was presented as a Ssam on "lightly pickled" Napa cabbage with ssamjang and kimchi. The ssamjang was phenomenal but did not make up for the lack of flavor in the pork belly. The last savory dish was the octopus with romesco, potatoes, sunchokes, and charred scallions. This was my favorite dish, but still not a winner. The scallion could have more char and the octopus was slightly undercooked. Which brings us to the issue of the last three dishes. They were all served in one bowl. That's right! They served us what looked like 1 serving of the Burrata, pork belly ssam, and octopus on one plate between two people. Utter nonsense. For $70 per person, I expected two separate dishes. The choice of dinnerware didn't even make sense for this. The bowls had high walls that made it difficult to share. But don't make me portion my own meals, please serve me the two separate dishes I paid for. A saving Grace was that dessert was amazing. Once again we had a single dessert to share and it was a sweet potato pie with lemon whipped cream. So good. The wine pairing was a delicious vermouth. But overall this meal was far below par. The seasoning was underwhelming, serving one dish for two people was poor value, and the dishes were all less complex than we were hoping for given the Korean influence in the menu. Unfortunately, I will not be returning but our waiter was great and I wish the best for him. read more

Unassuming from the outside but the food is just incredible and the ambiance is just wonderful. It's only open 3 days a week for a select slot of time and you need a reservation but if you get in, you are in for an experience. Note that they do a tasting menu for $60 per person and do not offer a la carte items, so everyone in your party must order the tasting menu. Let's start with the inside. They take 5pm and 8pm reservations for dinner and the vibe inside changes to accommodate the 2 different times! The 8pm reservation time was when I went- the lights were low, there were jellyfish pulsing on the wall in various colors, and the music was bumping (Drake, Doja Cat, etc...). I really loved the mood it was creating. It was simply yet well decorated inside. Most of the people dining there were adults and young adults in small groups. I'd definitely recommend coming in a group of 3 or 4 because of the size of the dishes. It was clean inside and all staff members wore masks. The service was very good as well. Waters were always full and staff was constantly roaming looking for empty glasses to refill. Chef Justin Ahn came out to say hello! The food came in good time and the dishes came out with an appropriate amount of time between each course. Our waiter was very friendly and personable. The food was outstanding. If you love Korean food, this plays on Korean comfort food here are just so fun. The concepts sound a little strange but the flavors and textures are all there. I'll go in order of the menu: 1. GalBi: Short rib hash, fried egg, kimchi, and chojang. This is the breakfast you didn't know you needed every day. It's so savory and delicious. 2. Jjim: Egg custard, prik nam pla. It's kind of like a mix between steamed egg and flan but with Thai flavors! It's creamy with a sharp punch. 3. HaeMul: Spicy sea snail whelk salad, jjolmyun. This is like a twist on the best bibimbap you've ever had. The bed of jjolmyun on the bottom is just perfect texture- I've never had anything like it. The sauce and toppings that you mix in are delicious. The snail in particular has a very tasty flavor that I can't get enough of. The freshness of the veggies, the savory snails, the chewy jjolmyun, all bound together by that delicious sauce are just amazing. This dish is just so good and so light I think I could eat pounds and pounds of it. 4. GuEe: Dressed NY strip, Korean goguma puree. This is a new and improved Korean steak and potatoes. The steak was medium rare and dressed with a delicious play on chimichurri. The bed of mashed potatoes it sat on was so much better than normal mashed potatoes. It's slightly sweet but not in the way sweet potatoes are. It's hard to describe but you will definitely fall in love with these potatoes. 5. Ssam: pork belly, spicy radish, pickled napa cabbage, walnut ssamjang. BEST. DISH. OF THE NIGHT. So not only did the pork belly melt in my mouth with that savory deliciousness that it typically brags, but the ssamjang also just elevated it to another level. I don't know why ssamjang doesn't always have walnuts in it because the walnuts just make it the most delicious thing ever. I don't even like ssamjang. I always try it and decide not to eat it. This ssamjang was so good I started eating it alone with my spoon after all the meat was gone. I wish I could take a gallon home. 6. JoRim: Cod, Mu, Bokchoy. Think Korean fish and chips! Instead of fries, there's turnip and bokchoy in a very tasty sauce. The cod is well cooked- crispy and golden fried on the outside but tender and moist on the inside. Be sure to drench your cod in that sauce- you will not be sorry. 7. Juk: Abalone, Arborio rice, pecorino Romano. Korean food meets Italian! Just imagine eating Juk but risotto-style. That's exactly what this is. A juk risotto. It's quite good and definitely tastes more like risotto than juk but it's an interesting experience and a fun play on traditional Korean food. Overall, fantastic experience here. The ambiance and service were great but the food is just another level. It's different. It's exciting. It's an experience. I would definitely recommend to any foodie out there looking for scrumptious food unlike any Korean dishes they've had before. Come here for some no-frills delicious creative Korean food. read more

This is a hidden gem in Annandale! A creative and absolutely delicious tasting menu of Korean-ish food. And only $65 per person! Each dish was yummy, but the highlights were the myun, perfectly balanced udon with cheese and kimchi, and the ssam, the softest melt in your mouth pork belly to wrap in cabbage with walnut samjang and spicy radish. Be forewarned that each course comes out in one plate to share, so no individual portions. There's a pairing menu, but I personally have always found that Korean food goes best with soju or beer. Came here while visiting DC. Food was great. Interesting twist on Korean food--tasted good while also being novel. Menu was creative: fried dduk curry that had good heat and flavor. Salmon crudo (hwe) was very refreshing. NY strip steak was served with fermented bean curd (doenjang) salad. Duck ssam was delicious--roasted duck breast served with sesame leaves, kimchi, and walnut ssam. Final course was a mushroom risotto that was a play on juk with different types of mushrooms. As someone who frequently eats Korean food, I thought this was creative and interesting. The space is very comfortable and nice--not fancy or pretentious. $65 tasting menu seemed like a great value. This is a really good restaurant serving their personal, quirky take on Korean-influenced cuisine. No foams, no overly arranged plates, just a lot of very good food on their $65 tasting menu. With $100+ tasting menus the norm at cheffy restaurants in DC, this is also a bargain. The stand out dishes were the opening trio: Galbi: braised short rib ion an amazing hashbrown base. Cold Noodles {HaeMul} which was sea snails, veggies on chewy noodles. Stunning, maybe the dish of the meal Jjim: a Thai flavored chawan Mushi rather than the steam egg of Korean cuisine. Silky smooth, spiked with heat but the heat is balanced by the silky smooth egg custard. Probably the other dish of the night. Another top dish was the Ssam: braised pork belly with crispy skin served with perilla leaf, radish kimchi, walnut samjang, and unfortunately insipid quick pickled cabbage. The cabbage prevented this dish from soaring to the top of the evening, but the pork and toppings were stunning. Next time, I would just skip the cabbage and ask for more perilla leaf. The Jorum was a battered cod on top of steamed bok choi and braised Korean radish in a light broth. My only nitpick here is that the cod did not really take on the flavor of the broth. I would really like to see Chef Justin really coat the cod in the broth and sacrifice some of the crunches of the batter to really marry the flavors and make the dish seem more unified. Juk was not quite risotto as described on the menu and did in fact resemble a very thick juk. I loved the fishy element but thought the cheese element took away for the total. I let Chef know I would have preferred bottarga and he let on his partner agreed with me. Still a delicious dish, just could have gone to the next level. The NY Steak was nice enough but not up to the rest of the dishes above. However, as one course in an 8 dish tasting menu, it was still VERY good. The small salad served was a basic 'sushi bar salad' IMO. However, a couple of the 4 of us really liked it. The cocktail list was imaginative and I think we tried every one. The Makkoli cocktail was my favorite, the Shandy, and the first bourbon cocktail, featuring Filibuster Bourbon and superb. I tasted but did not order the sour and it was really good too with Korean plum wine poured into a standard sour. All in all the meal was about $150 for us with two cocktails and two tasting menus. The service is mostly from the two owners and it is heartfelt. The rest of the staff were good-intentioned but service is not the strong suit. The tasting menu took about 2.5 hours and I think every table ordered it. The only delay in the service was when we wanted the check. And our plated were changed often and then we would get a course and the silverware would follow, a minor issue. Unlike a lot of big named restaurants in DC and other parts of NOVA, this was a fun and filling meal, low on pretension, high on flavor. This is the kind of place I love to support. read more

I respect what they're doing and the chef seems very enthusiastic and ambitious in his dishes. This place is def an upscale Korean restaurant that serves fusion dishes. Most of the dishes weren't bad, but the portions and quality of them do not justify the high price ranges. The cocktails are decent too. One dish that was honestly off-putting was the curry dish. It literally just tasted like thai green curry.. Lol. With the chefs pre-fixed menu and cocktails, expect to pay around $80-100 each. The understated elegance of Incheon's dining room only emphasizes the mouth-watering beauty of chef Justin Ahn's cooking. You may have already heard plenty about chef Ahn's skill in combining Korean cuisine with influences from elsewhere: such highlights in this regard include the toothsome, filling creaminess of his jeonbokjuk-inspired abalone risotto, and the spicy, tart bursts of umami goodness that Thai prik nam pla brings to a shimmering bowl of savory gyeran-jjim. But chef Ahn also plays some traditional Korean dishes completely straight; after all, there's no need to mess with the visual beauty of a perfectly-stacked pork belly ssam, especially when the tender meat, crisp kimchi, and nutty soybean paste inside can hardly be called anything other than a perfect bite. The staff are punctual and eager to accommodate any requests or concerns, and chef Ahn is more than happy to walk you through Incheon's impressive list of cocktails himself. We had 3 people and our tasting menu was 3 fried croquette with lamb meat inside, shrimp/scallop/octopus udon curry, kalbi with kimchi, walnut soybean paste (the only Korean dish, but the Kalbi meat is too chewy, not a good cut obviously), Singapore chicken rice with bok choy, and finally brownie with vanilla icecream and mango. The tasting menu is quite disappointing. I thought it would be more Korean fusion but obviously there is nothing about Korean related. The chef should be creative on how to enhance Korean cuisine with modern touch. But instead, none of the dishes had any Korean cuisine background and they are just copy/borrow from dishes from other cuisine. For example, there is a dish is just simply Singapore Hainan chicken rice. Another dish is seafood udon curry, which each person only gets 1 shrimp, 1 scallop and 1 piece of octopus. The way they present the dish is everyone share from 1 bowl. We had to divide food among ourselves. This is no different than sharing a dish like any other restaurant. So, there is no plating at all. This is totally unacceptable for tasting menu. The food quality itself is also not great, its just average. We can tell the chef is not trying to impress the customer, otherwise the dessert won't be a simple brownie with vanilla icecream and some tasteless mango. You can get the same desert in many other places with cheaper price. The mango is not in season, so I am not blaming the mango, but I am blaming the chef. If the chef had tasted the mango, he/she can choose a different fruit. For $70 per person, the food quality is totally not worth it. The restaurant simply fails to impress. read more

Honestly don't know how this place is still open. The staff is sooo nice but that was the only positive that night. Menu was incredibly limited - a la Carte included maybe 6 options. We went for the tasting menu. Portions were small. They had us wait in between each course - if they hadn't we would still be hungry after. First course was one raw oyster from the patuxent river - it tasted like river water and not in a good way. There's a reason the Patuxent is not known for oysters. Underwhelming flavors everywhere. Used a sardine with their octopus - would've preferred a "real" fish here. Used 3 small shrimp in their beef broth soup. The cost to upgrade to larger shrimp when it's the only protein in a bowl of just noodles, broth, and a mushroom would've gone a long way. Ingredients seemed cheap which does not align what they're selling - upscale, thoughtful, innovative food. Disappointed but staff was very nice read more

The food here was very different in a good way. Couple of things that turned me and my wife off was the fact that the chef at most restaurants usually comes out and greets the tables especially when this was supposed to be a higher end Korean restaurant yet the chef only went to one table and spoke with his friends at that table and ignored other tables at the restaurant. The server was good and food was good. I also didn't like the fact that they don't accommodate for food allergies. Really wanted to enjoy the food here. They didn't offer the chef tasting menu like how other Yelpers suggested. We ordered four dishes: ~ fried chicken: nicely fried, no flavor except in the green scallions that were used for garnish ~ oyster salad: oysters weren't in its shell, fishy taste, chalky texture - we didn't enjoy and sent back. Extremely apprehensive to do so bc we never do that ever ~ fish stew: it was on the specialty menu. Fish had bones in it, but had a nice taste and texture. Flavor was similar to jjammbong soup ~ brisket with noodles: tiny protein portion, great tasting garlic noodles. Best tasting dish we had I ordered a vodka soda and the waiter came back and said they only offer what's on the menu. I pointed out that they have a drink with Tito's in it; can I have a Tito's with club soda? He later came back and said they don't have club soda, they only have San pelligrino. I think the foodie way to describe the food was "a Korean take on non-Korean dishes" but in real words this was a fun, delicious, mind-expansive meal. We had the tasting menu and every dish was fabulous, interesting, new, and thoughtful. The space was lovely - intimate and spare but with a couple really fun twists: we had hanging greenery above our table and there were projected images on the side wall. Drinks were great, our server was fun and chatty, and Chef Justin came out to present some of our dishes and talk about them. I said to my husband on the way out, I wish Incheon was closer to home because I would eat here a lot. An after-meal post-script: husband slept better than normal and I didn't get thirsty overnight as I usually do from this much restaurant food. I'm not a picky eater, but there was an ingredient or two that gave me pause. Nonetheless I ate all seven courses and loved every bite. We loved the unique cocktails that were on the menu and every dish on the tasting menu was fabulous. Justin, the chef, is so personable and passionate about his dishes. My 9-year-old daughter and I had a great dinner at Incheon last night. I did not opt for the tasting menu as I was with her. We ordered the short ribs over hash browns mixed with kimchi, the cod, and the egg custard. Last week's Washington Post review somewhat criticized the short ribs (in an otherwise stellar review), which Tom S described as being served with polenta rather than the delicious hash browns. We loved that dish! The cod was amazing too. Portion sizes were large and we took leftovers home. Service was really nice. I was pretty excited about this tasting menu, however the overall experience fell short. If you go a little early before your reservation, you cannot grab a drink at the bar and will need to wait. The food was ok, but service fell very flat. When we were given our table, there was no introduction or anyone that came by to ask if we had any food allergies. We had to flag down a waiter to grab drinks and when we had gotten our first dish, the waiter just said here's your first course and just hurried off. Most dishes are on the heavy side with no clear progression. My least favorite was the galbi over hash because although the galbi was perfectly cooked, the hash was not as crisp and it seemed like it fit more for fast casual then a tasting menu. The favorite dish was the fried fish over curry; flavors were well balance and the fish cooked beautifully. There was no dessert or anything light for the end of the tasting menu, which was disappointing. I do not think it was great value for what we had paid and expected. read more
