New to the area, my wife and I looked for our next go-to Indian restaurant. FOUND IT The ambience is amazing. From stepping inside, you're given the allure of entering someone's home but greeted with a minimalistic, modern restaurant atmosphere. Service was A+ and the food even better! We ordered the garlic naan, chicken tikka masala (spicy) and lamb vindaloo (spicy) - all were stellar! The masala almost tasted like vodka sauce which was a first for me and I'm NOT complaining. ***2 1/2 stars*** As a native of the Kingdom of Hunterdon, I tend to grade on a curve/appreciate when an ethnic restaurant, or really any establishment that's not just selling pizza by the slice, sets up shop in a pretty rural area. The tradeoff though is that sometimes these places just aren't very good. Indian Masala has a ton of great reviews so maybe I DID just come on an off day, but in my experience, these restaurants often get inflated positive feedback because the patrons just don't have perspective/experience to compare it to (the Hunterdon comp is Bamboo House in Frenchtown, which is very average but is literally the only sushi place must residents have ever been to). I genuinely don't know what the case is here. I stopped by for lunch yesterday with one of my top-tier chums, herself a native of the Kingdom of Sussex. She's a pretty big fan of this place and has mentioned it several times before. We both had pretty big appetites and were ready for a hearty meal. Comparatively speaking, the interior is a little on the bougie side especially for downtown Newton - high-class chairs, sleek tables, etc. I don't think there were any other customers in there when we showed up so we got our pick of the seating and I happily chose the table in the window for potential people watching outside. The highlight for me was the Gobi Manchurian app, which was fried cauliflower florets in a garlic sauce. I thought a few of the florets were overcooked/soggy but overall it was pretty decent - it tasted to me almost like healthy Chinese food, if that makes sense. If we didn't have legit entrees looming on the horizon, I would have had a lot more of that. The Chicken Tikka Masala was literally the worst I've ever had, and probably the only negative experience I've had with the dish. I'm by no means an Indian cuisine expert, but this to me is one of the more mainstream "Americanized" dishes and thus rare to mess up. The chicken was rubbery and dry and definitely wasn't helped by the accompanying curry. I got mild, but this was so mild to render it almost tasteless; it should have at least a little nip to it, but this was so rough that I chose to eat my accompanying naan bread naked without dipping it. Just a gigantic miss in my book and I'd recommend to any future customers that you opt for at least medium spice here. The service was hard to describe and ultimately a wash for me. In many ways it was technically a positive. Our waitress was very attentive but our interactions were a little awkward/odd, much of which can likely be chalked up to cultural barriers so I don't see a need to ding them for it. But as an example, any time my water glass was 80% full, she'd swoop in to fill it all the way to the top - literally the water level would hover right at the edge of the glass so I had to be careful not to spill when I took the next few sips. And once or twice she came by to fill up my chum's glass while I literally was drinking from mine, and she just stood there like a vulture until I placed the glass back on the table so she could swoop in. Especially given that my water was never close to even halfway empty, it was just too aggressive. But it came from a good place so your mileage may vary. Little odd all the way around. As much as I love to highlight restaurants in this area, this one is a pass for me. Much better options for Indian food closer to the city. read more

The space is on smaller side but well laid out and comfortable. Very pleasant atmosphere. Servers are very nice always. This was the first place I ever tried Indian food and this is now my 3rd time here. I always try to get something different and they never disappoint. Lamb, chicken, seafood, etc. all good. 10/4/24 We had dinner before a concert in the nearby Newton Theater. Street parking if you got lucky or a municipal parking about 2 blocks away. It's cute 1st floor of a house. Service was good. While some of the staff did not know much English they were very polite and helpful. Fish Fry - meh. I thought the fish would be cooked in a sauce, but it came with a dipping sauce. The batter needed seasoning, and the dipping sauce was just mayo with some Indian spices. I say pass. Chicken Kadai - flavorful sauce i just didn't like the breast meat they use. I generally dislike breast meat because it tends to me dry and tough. This dish would have been way better with thigh meat. Shrimp Malabar Curry - again, a good sauce. Plenty of shrimp. Garlic Naan - ok Peshwari Naan - raisins and nuts Naan was interesting, not sure I would get it again. It's slightly sweet. The texture is like finely shredded coconut. read more

My friend and I stopped in for a bite to eat before going to a nearby theater . The first thing I see you when I walk in the first door is the big beautiful painting of the Taj Mahal . Everything was fresh and hot and so flavorful! Make sure your reserve a seat in advance if you have time constraints like a theater performance. My brother and I were shocked to see it was $58 for 2 entrees, 2 drinks, and a shared side, but after actually trying the food it was One Million percent worth it. We had a wonderful meal hear yesterday evening. Food, service, ambiance were all excellent. We ordered Vegetable Samosa, Imli Baingan, Aloo Gobi, Tandori Medley, Daal Makhini, Chicken Biryani, Salmon Saag, and Lacha Paratha - way too much food for only 2 of us, but we had an amazing meal again at home the next day and plenty more leftovers after that. We were incredibly impressed with this restaurant! World class indian food right at the heart of Sussex County. The space was decorated quite nicely with vivid artwork complimented by bright orchestral music. Our service was prompt and offered us glasses for our BYOB beers. For our meal we enjoyed 3 entrees, the Vegetable Saag, Chicken Saag and Paneer Masala with rice included and 2 side orders of Naan (garlic and paneer/cheese). The dishes were all excellent, just be careful with the spice level! A 7/10 is very hot and while I liked it I would shy on the light side as it can get very spicy! The Naan breads were fantastic, we ordered both the garlic and paneer (cheese), both excellent! A nice, homey, small town Indian restaurant. We came around 5:30 pm and it was just getting busy. It's probably best to make a reservation to ensure a table, although we came in without one and managed to nab the last large table. The staff are very kind and accommodating. We started with the Imli Baingan which was fantastic, refreshing and layered with different textures. We had the Kabab Sampler which was a little dry, although the flavor was pretty good - it also comes in very small portions just as an FYI. For the main course, we ordered family style the lamb chops (overcooked and burnt), the jumbo tandoor shrimp (good rub but slightly salty), the chicken tikka masala (more tomato and tangy than it is creamy), and the lamb biryani (perfectly seasoned and spiced). 4.5 stars if it were possible! Came here after going to a nearby orchard. For 3 people, we got the papdi chaat, tandoori medley and chicken biryani. Papdi chaat was very refreshing! Would definitely recommend. The Tandoori medley is a mix of all the kabobs. 2 of each except there was only one lambchop piece. It's a good way to try everything but the chicken breast pieces were a bit on the drier side. If we come back, would recommend the lamb chops or jumbo tandoor shrimp. There is an option for mild or medium spice for the chicken biryani. Medium spice a little more spicy than I thought but it was very flavorful! Worth the burn! read more

I ordered the vindaloo a while back and it was perfect, they used chicken thighs and the spice level was amazing - with a hint of sweetness, exactly what I want in a good vindaloo. However, the last two visits, they've switched to chicken breasts, leaving a dry - rubbery bite in ever bite of of the dish - and the heat has been toned down. I refuse to go to a restaurant that makes the basic mistake of using chicken breast in a curry - and giving me a rubbery meal. It used to be great - but not anymore. Maybe when they switch back to chicken thighs, will I consider going back. read more

First time coming here and my husband and I loved it! We love spicy so we got the vindaloo and tadka daal spice level 7. Everything had great heat and flavor. The naan was obviously fresh. The madras coffee wasn't quite strong enough for me (I'm a huge coffee drinker), but they were very accommodating when I told them. The entire staff was fantastic and very kind. Came here on a Sunday and looking for something with a kick, this place surely did not disappoint. The service throughout the meal was great. They made sure we had enough water and everything else we needed. Waiter was kind and explained the difference in some plates and made sure we were getting what we wanted. Ordered two entrees and it came with rice, which is great because a lot of places charge you for it as a side. They asked you the level of spiciness that you want between mild, medium and spicy. But will also scale it on a 1-10 level. The portions were great and packed with a lot of flavor.
