I met Brandon today and his mom, both very sweet. Their whole beans come from all over the world and are grinned at time of service I got the nutty by nature latte that has a pc of Ferraro Rocher hazelnut chocolate on top; so yummy! Really wanted to like this place especially since I saw it was veteran-owned and my husband is a vet himself. The atmosphere was nice and relaxing as many pictures show. However the service was so-so. The guy did his job, but seemed rather annoyed to be doing so. I tried to start small talk, but he had a bit of an attitude. When you own a restaurant or cafe, it is you who should make your customers feel welcomed. After all of that and even giving an undeserved tip the coffee was so watered down. It was a marathon day in Galveston for the family. We had two more things to accomplish before sleep and needed a little pick me up. Found Indies online and decided to swing in for a cuppa. What a beautiful space. The artwork, all by a local artist Gene Barron (we were told they're looking at featuring a single artist every month or so) set the vibe nicely. We were greeted by Brandon Jones, the owner, who was both extremely friendly and informative. He let us know the space had just opened at the beginning of the month, they host live music (bluegrass!) and that they roast the coffee daily. There are several varieties and you can also take a bag with you if you like. He's also a former Marine and was a Hollywood mover and shaker for a few years before entering into the coffee game. He brings both of those things together in the shop... having blends both named after famous movies and selling some to benefit military charities. I ordered a straight up cup of coffee. Told him I wanted the coffee... house blend... his recommendation... and he poured me a cup of "The Breakfast Club" and it was delicious. In fact, while he was making the coffee drinks (a latte and a decaf mocha) for my kiddos, I finished my coffee and got a refill. I also got a pack of coffee beans to take home. He said they're working on making a deck happen, which would be great because outside the back door is water. Delicious coffee. Great conversation. Wonderful artwork. On the way out, heading back home, we decided to visit Indie's Coffee Bar & Speakeasy. We were impressed. Everyone was happy with their drinks, and the place had a good, cozy atmosphere with plenty of space. We came when it was slow so we had more than enough space to sit. Based on the person behind the counter, the place was packed the night before with the live music. It's good to see a place that stays open late with live music, unlike other indie coffee shops that close early with nothing else. It was reminiscent of some coffee shops I used to visit when I was younger. The guy behind the counter was kind and courteous, answering the questions I had about the place. I was recently in Galveston for business. I needed my morning coffee fix and boo-yaaa, ended up at Indies. Good lawd, what a place. The coffee was delightful and the service (The owners, Brandon and Carla, were brewing their masterpiece) was outstanding. We got to talking and I could not have been more impressed by the coffee but Brandon/Carla as well. The place is absolutely beautiful, and you can tell that there was a lot of thought and love put into this place. I'm from Southern Cali and coffee shops are a dime a dozen out here. It blew my mind, how in this tiny little town, I found a coffee shop that, not only rivals, but surpasses the stuff out here in Cali. Indies is the Real Deal.
