Disappointing ice cream for the prices! My brother and I tried the creme brûlée and the Hokkaido milk ice cream. I got the Hokkaido and it was creamy, smooth, and a unique fresh milk taste which I enjoyed. I liked the difference in taste being milky but It isn't that special compared to other ice creams like vanilla or Taro with similar flavor profiles. The Creme Brûlée was odd tasting in a bad way, sweet, and thick like a bean paste, we didn't enjoy it. The prices here are up there and you don't get much ice cream. Knew I had to come back to Indigo Cow when I was back in LA, this time in the Echo Park location. Just as good as I remember, super creamy and a true milk forward taste that's hard to find out here. Tastes just like the milk soft serves I had in Japan! A lot of similar soft serve places that have milk flavors just end up tasting like vanilla or are too icy, but Indigo Cow has perfected their recipe. For Mother's Day they gave out a free topping, so I got to try their matcha warabimochi which had a great soft squishy texture. Will be getting that topping more often! I could not see past the sweetness or lack there of, the pastries were a miss because I expected them to be more from point of purchase. I remembered these facts after I entered Indigo Cow that sells ice cream made from milk from Hakkaido, which is an area of Japan that has cows that produce milk that is turned into velvet soft yet rich milk. I hate to write reviews like this, where my taste buds might taste the lack of sweetness but may not understand that this is the wonder of the treat. Imagine someone who prides themselves in being a fashionista. And they are given distress clothes of the season made by the house of De la Renta, and then they complaint about the tattered pants that almost looked burn. They can the error but they do not have the current and global knowledge to know that this is, in fact, the fabulous factor. Am I not understanding that the lack of sweetness is truly the fabulous factor? Perhaps. I do not fear admitting that I do not know all flavor profiles and perhaps I am limited in knowing what is wonderful because I did not acquire all worthy tastes. Despite that, I know what I like, and an ice cream that is milk taste forward and does not have a clear personality is not something I liked. When I approached the counter, a young lady helped me, it was her first day. I asked questions that betrayed the fact that I was a proverbial noob to the place. I wanted them to define what Matcha is? I did not know that it was a green tea powder. I ordered the regular Hokkaido milk flavor in a regular cup. i then added the most popular topping: Mochi with brown sugar and roasted soy bean powder. I also added a wall of chocolate, a topping like that. The first few spoonfuls, I loved. I loved the mochi, thick, gummy- in a wondrous way- and yes it event had sweetness I admired. But once the mochi was gone, and the wall of chocolate was gone all you had left was the milk ice cream and I could not without the toppings. The toppings carried the ice cream, which means that the foundational flavor floundered, at least for me. If you are familiar with Japanese ice cream, or you are more broad of palette, then you might find the ice cream flavor grand. They also had other flavors and drinks, my friend got the Affagato. But I do not think I will go again, not because they did anything wrong, but by design maybe this treat was never designed to impress someone like me. My friends and I came here after dinner for dessert after they heard recommendations from others. The store occupied and older space as it had the layout of stores from the 1950s and 1960s where you enter through a short tunnel between glass windows. Those windows, which typically displayed merchandise, had since been transformed into benches but the narrow configurations made it difficult for parties on the inner most parts to get out without walking over others or forcing others to get up (like getting out from the window seat on an airplane). If Indigo Cow was not allowed to reconfigure the store front, then this was an understandable compromise and at least it "looked cute." (I'd recommend eating outside if possible but to not travel too far as our order began melting right away and I'm pretty sure even 10 minute walk would compromise the flavor and texture.) This was my first visit to any Indigo Cow... and their menu on the wall was SO CONFUSING! I get that it was designed to look clean and retro, and AFTER you are explained the menu, it kind of makes more sense--but if your design needs explaining before it can make sense, then it fails. Not putting equal emphasis on looks AND utility was a poor design choice. They did have some smaller print-out menus which made much more sense... but for the wall, I could suggest multiple changes which could improve its comprehension... and then there was the audible sighs from the staff having to explain the wall menu... and their eye rolls... but I digress... As it turned out, they only had 2 flavors of soft serve and all the other listen items (WHICH SOUND LIKE FLAVORS), were merely toppings. I ordered a swirl with a black sesame and yuzu topping and a charcoal waffle cone. The soft serve itself was decent but didn't blow me away. It's supposedly made from Hokkaido milk but still goes into the soft serve machine as a dehydrated powder. The matcha flavoring was to my liking, not overpowering but not weak. The Hokkaido milk flavor was completely lost on me as the toppings completely covered it up. In that regard, I regretted ordering the toppings as the black sesame flavor took over almost everything (so I can understand if others wanted the matcha flavor to be strong so it complimented and mixed with the black sesame instead of being over-written). The yuzu pieces were the only thing able to cut through the black sesame flavor. The waffle cone itself was also disappointing to me. It tasted completely flavorless and not even slightly sweet. I had bit of the cone by itself before eating it with the soft serve and it was all texture and no taste. I love myself a good wafflecone and have good charcoal ones from other stores (and in Japan), and Indigo Cow's version simply did not hit the mark for me. If it's hot outside and you want a decently priced soft serve treat to help cool yourself down, Indigo Cow will suffice but it may not blow your tastebuds away.
