I am glad they are still around with the changing economy these days. It is not very easy to park here as they have valet parking. I was able to park on the street thankfully. Ever since I was little (like close to 20 years ago!!), Bhan Kanom Thai has been a staple pit stop whenever my family and I would go to Thai town for dinner. Nothing is overly sweet, everything is made fresh, they keep the desserts warmed/ refrigerated to preserve the freshness, the Pandan and coconut flavors are strong and natural. Nothing tastes artificial. The employees there are really friendly and kind. They were welcoming and had patience while I decided on the 15 things that I wanted haha. I don't even remember tasting the Luk Chup, as she devoured them all! There are many different sweet and savory desserts from Thailand to try. The best thai green tea i've ever had! It is pretty sweet but a generous amount of ice cuts the sweetness perfectly. I've also had their regular thai tea, but it wasn't as good. The floral taste of the thai green tea just can't be beat. Some of their desserts are on the pricey side. The pandan buns are $12 for 6 small rolls. They do taste pretty good but not worth the price. I enjoyed the pandan coconut custard though! It was my first time having pandan, and I was not disappointed at all. The texture was lovely too. Great place to pick up some authentic Thai snacks! My friends and I walked by after lunch nearby and decided to check it out. We didn't recognize most of what they were selling, so we just ordered a couple things to try out. The good thing is that nothing is super expensive. We tried the coconut pudding ($6 for 5), crispy crepe / kanom bueng ($6 for 6 pieces), and a small flower shaped pastry. My favorite was the coconut pudding with taro bits. The crispy crepe was good too, but I definitely preferred the sweet one to the savory one, which tasted super weird with the combination of mildly sweet coconut and garlic. My wife and I stopped by Bhan Kanom Thai after having lunch nearby at Lacha Somtum, based on recommendations from several foodie friends who said it was a great spot for dessert. Since we were already stuffed from lunch, we didn't have a huge appetite. Most of our friends picked up mango sticky rice to-go for later, but also grabbed a few smaller items to share in the parking lot. I had a chance to try the crispy crepe, coconut pancake, and pangchi (chewy banana coconut pancakes). None of them stood out as something I'd rush back for. To be fair, I'm not super familiar with Thai desserts beyond mango sticky rice, so I can't speak to how traditional or well-executed they were -- but I'll just say I wasn't blown away. Before we left, I did one last walk-through to see if there was anything else I wanted to try, since I wasn't planning to be back anytime soon. That's when I spotted a bag of cut-up guava near the counter. As a big fan of guava, I grabbed it without thinking. I wasn't sure how much it was, so I pulled out a $10 bill -- and to my surprise, it was $10 exactly. That felt extremely steep for a small bag of fruit. I definitely wouldn't purchase it again. Lesson learned: it's worth asking for prices in advance, especially for items that aren't clearly labeled. As for the parking situation, it's worth noting that it's valet-only, and it can get very backed up. We didn't realize this going in, and once you turn into the lot, you might find yourself stuck behind a long line of cars with no easy way to turn around. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way to stop by. If you're already in the plaza, it might be worth a peek -- but between the parking headache, underwhelming desserts, and surprise $10 fruit, I'd probably pass next time. read more
