This is my favored Indochine between the 2. It is located in a quieter location, and while parking spaces are slightly tighter, I have never had issues parking. Owner on site is super nice and friendly. The one thing that sets restaurants apart from others is the consistency of the food. I have NEVER been disappointed with the food here. I've been here three times now, and my positive first impression has only improved with time. The food is excellent. Seems only slightly Americanized for the local palette: I appreciate the "scale of 1 to 5" spiciness option for the hot dishes, but a 4 here in Tacoma is about a 2 in places where spicy heat is expected. If you're from Thailand (or southern Mexico), ask for 5. Note: one thing that is not "Americanized" is their spring rolls. Very different from the spring rolls you'll get at a run-of-the-mill "Chinese Food" restaurant in America. These are authentic, with translucent rice wrappers, delicately flavored, steamed not fried, and a bit larger than the common American spring roll. We especially love the Panang curry and the drunken noodles-- and their unusual "brown rice" is so good, I might just order it to go with food I cook at home! This place is always absolutely delicious! We've been coming here for years and it does not disappoint. At our most recent visit we started with the homemade potstickers and the crab rangoons for appetizers. For our entrees, we had the chicken pad Thai, the drunken noodles, and crispy fish with ginger sauce. Everything was so good! You can taste how fresh the ingredients are, and the food comes out hot and beautiful plated. Prices are super reasonable. The service is always fabulous! They bring everything quickly and are highly attentive. But now, three additional experiences from the restaurant, I don't think we will order anything again. The past orders were okay, but food was flavorless. This third order, well, was just terrible. Ordered delivery and the bag was filled with liquid...and there was no soups, no thin liquid sauces, no curry....so what was this?!? And the liquid was in the bag with all the rice, a pork fried rice, brown and white rice. All soaked and we just threw them out. We had the ginger chicken with vegetables, Mongolian beef (asked for super spicy) and both dishes were just bad. The beef tasted like old meat. The only saving grace was the chicken wings, which were excellent. Everything else ended up in the trash. Not sure what has changed, bums me out for sure. I asked for more chicken and had some of the best panang curry I've had in years with ample chicken and vegetables.The satay was nicely marinated and tasty, Peanut sauce was pretty thick bordering on a paste. Indochine on Pearl is a smaller, more casual version of the larger, classier Indochine downtown, but because they have two separate websites and different (but similar) logos, the two do not appear to be related. They feature very similar menus, but Pearl is a few dollars cheaper across the board. The space is well-decorated and inviting, with pleasant water features lining the entrance and faux-rooftops inside creating the feeling of being in a Thailand garden. Date night planners should be aware that though parking is much easier here than Downtown, Pearl's surrounding environment isn't as interesting and walkable as Downtown's. The service wasn't bad, just sort of absent. Our server was slightly off-putting, walking up to the table and just looking at us without prompting us with a line like "what can I get started for you" or "what would you like to order". It's a small restaurant, but she would just disappear and missed the usual cadance of drinks/food/check-ins/payment. In fact, after she took our orders, I don't think we saw her again. Maybe her shift was over. In any case, the Tropical Fever drink was deliciously sweet and the Drunken Noodles had plentiful veggies and an excellent texture. Disappointingly, the Phad Thai was overpowered by garlic. Overall I found the experience more comparable to that of Royal Thai Bistro than to Indochine Downtown. The atmosphere is better than Royal Thai but not as good as Downtown. The price is similar to Royal Thai in that it's less expensive than Downtown. I called the restaurant and asked them to either send the rice or please refund me. The owner was so rude over the phone coming up with excuses and said to me "what else do you want me to do." I understand businesses are strained right now during COVID; however, it's unacceptable not to give a customer what they paid for as well as be extremely rude and disrespectful. For reference, I'm Cambodian and have been LOOKING for some good eats. My boyfriend and I always passed by this place without a second thought until my lash lady recommended this place to me. If you don't like spicy food it's great, if you DO like spicy food (like me,) you're better off bringing your own chili oil. That was a bit of a bummer. Service is a bit slow, we had to wave the waiter over quite a few times to ask for more water, the bill, etc. The ugly0: You have to pay for a side of rice, and that side of rice is VERY small. Seriously, it is a baby bowl of rice and this bothers me because ALMOST NONE of their entrees come with rice, so having to order a bunch more kind of sucks. Also their spicy stuff is NOT spicy. My daughter and her dad asked if I wanted to get some food to go (I've been home sick), so I thought curry would be a great option. We have lived here a year-and-a-half and the restaurant is only a mile from our house, yet we have never been. Big mistake on our part. I chose the green curry with tofu and brown rice- vegetarian option. You do need to order the rice separately, so that makes it a bit more pricey, but still, so worth it! The curry was amazing! The other dish was Golden Cashew: This is from the menu: Tender strips of chicken, fresh vegetables, and roasted cashews sautéed in a subtly sweet and spicy garlic sauce. The strips of everything were too big and very few. The four cashews do not make for a dish that has the words cashew in the title. The flavor, mmm, no. I ended up adding my own sauce. I ordered a Tanquarey and Tonic -- I received a glass of Club soda and I'm guessing there was Gin somewhere in the glass. I couldn't detect it but was so annoyed with the main course, I simply chalk it off to a bad night at a restaurant for my wife and me. I'm writing this criticism for two reasons: 1. The Owner should know about this dinner catastrophe, and 2nd: Indocine on Pearl street in Tacoma isn't a fast food, all you can eat for 20 dollars.
