We were greeted as soon as we entered the shop, and the gal (young, early 20s, light brown hair, porcelain complexion) kept her gaze focused exclusively on us. We felt like the only ones in the shop. It was a pretty warm day today so there were more people flocking towards the ice cream section than the chocolates section as it was pretty empty on the right hand side of the store. With chocolate candied pieces in display cases up at the front and packaged chocolate bars and pieces toward the back; it is a sweet tooth person's dream as it's the best of both worlds in one store. For those that want a sample of what Dutch chocolate tastes like, there is actually a small bowl on top of the glass display case that offers milk and dark chocolate bite size samples for visitors that's actually a wonderful idea. But here it was the best part of my visit: besides marzipan they also had Danish Flodeboller (OMG!) which is handmade marshmallow fillings on a light wafer cookie-enrobed with dark chocolate. Every time we have gone the gal behind the chocolate counter is very kind and patient while we pick out our chocolates. This last trip - the girl who helped us was especially sweet to us (I always find if I smile and I am nice -I always get good service in return). Being Swedish I know my Scandinavian chocolates. I wanted to buy an icecream tried two scoops and they were really bad- pecan butter one with really very old nuts which stuck in my throat for a long time and chocolate which taste like they put cacao in plain ice cream - so bad( i wanted to find something else to buy but the cashier was like " only two you may try". Lost at least 6 people waiting. Truly saw no reason why they couldn't serve the customers. The store was still open. They hadn't sealed up the tubs yet. It made no sense. I don't know if it's a store policy to stop serving before close or if they just decided they didn't feel like it. But they left a handful of extremely hot customers empty handed when it would have been very easy to just serve who was already there. They served someone right before us and then told us no. Wow! Ingeborg's tops as the rudest shop I've ever been to. I dropped by earlier with my husband and our kid. When we were checking out the chocolates, the older sales clerk quickly took away the tiny plate containing chocolate samples after I pointed at it while telling my kid that we were going to try it before we buy a few treats. Was the sales clerk uncomfortable to display the samples because my skin is about as brown as the chocolates she sells? We haven't even touched a single sample so I wonder what warranted that kind of move on her part. Disappointing. Based on recommendations from the counter person, I ordered 2 chocolates. This marshmallow concoction sitting on a soggy wafer, covered in dark chocolate (yuck) - she said this was there most popular item?! And a chocolate marzipan nougat, this was better than the marshmallow thing, I liked it because I like marzipan and it wasn't too sweet. Nothing I would dream about though... The ice cream is from an outside vendor, we ordered a scoop, but I won't give these guys any credit for it since they didn't make it. An aimless walk through the street of Solvang led me to Ingeborg's. Not sure why I keep walking into candy stores, I can't eat sugar....perhaps it's my own sick twisted way of torturing myself. Yum yum. Ingeborg's is an essential stop for any visit to Solvang. They excellent chocolate as well as a great selection of other Danish and Dutch packaged candy that you can't get anywhere else. The packaging on the candy is usually not in English but you can pretty much guess what the flavors will be like. This is a good place to try salty licorice because the Dutch brand they carry is much milder than the German type that Cost Plus and other stores have. They have a wonderful selection of chocolate covered dried fruit including orange slices. Be sure to try the marzipan sticks in various flavors - it is probably the best marzipan I have ever had.
