For the past twelve years we have visited the Inlet Café a few times during the season, and while the site is still beautiful, and they still serve their signature dishes, the quality has declined: less lobster pieces in the lobster bisque but more starch, the hearty garlic baguette that used to come with the Inlet clams has been replaced by two slices of industrial bread with some shredded cheese on them, and the excellent broth that we used to it with a spoon considerably diminished and is very salty. read more

There is only so much water view to be had and to have a water view is a great thing. At Inlet Cafe you get great food and a great view. Want the best of that great view? Then plan accordingly. Inlet Cafe is popular. It will be crowded at peak times and you may not get that coveted table closest to the water or outside by the water. I've had various meats, seafood and dessert here and it has all been excellent quality. The caesar salad has been excellent. The owners are caring people and frequently present to ensure things are going well. Parking can be a bit of a hassle because this is Highlands. There is only so much room in the lot and only so much street parking available. Again, plan your trip. If you want the view and less parking hassle then it is up to you to plan your timing. Time spent with the view can provide a mini-vacation. It is a great place to take visiting guests and/or someone not familiar with what NJ has to offer. The NJ bayshore and shore are treasures. This is one of the places where you can show them off and have a great meal. Highly recommend. read more

We came here last minute for an early dinner as we wanted to be able to sit outside- as this restaurant has great outdoor seating along the Sandy Hook inlet. No fault of the restaurant after ordering we needed to move inside as it was too windy and cold to enjoy the seating. They make moved us inside, to a very noisy bar area. It was difficult to hear each other in conversation and at that point I did not know which was worse, being cold outside with a great view or inside where we were audibly isolated from each other because of the loud noise. The table we sat on was also sticky, and not cleaned well. We both started with the Manhattan Clam Chowder which the waitress exclaimed is renowned. It tasted sweetened and to be honest was not any better than Campbell's. I ordered the stuffed jumbo shrimps. They were tasteless and drenched in what was supposed to be a lobster sauce. It made the so-called crab stuffing also tasteless. The shrimp were medium size, certainly not jumbo and only 3 on the plate. Really a big disappointment for a $30 entre. My wife ordered an arugula salad with strawberry and goat cheese. When it came out it was swimming in dressing, and not edible. They prepared another one for her, this time with the dressing on the side - much better. In looking at their dinner menu,I think it's on the high side for a mediocre restaurant such as this one. The best I could say about this place is if you can come here when the weather permits you to sit outside - the value is in the water view, but the food is average to below average. A totally excellent experience. My friend and I stopped in on Halloween afternoon. Our server, Gerard, was perfect; helpful, friendly, not intrusive. Pre-meal we were served cole slaw that was so good my friend got some to take home with her. I had decided on grouper, but when I asked Gerard for his recommendations his praise for the seafood linguini changed my mind. It was so good! Big chunks of lobster, 5-6 large shrimp and scallops, all cooked to perfection in a broth instead of a cream sauce. My friend had the ahi tuna which also was picture perfect and delicious. Not wanting to leave, we ordered dessert. Gerard warned us that his cappuccino might not be so good (it was only ok) but the desserts (apple tart with vanilla ice cream and pumpkin cheese cake) were very good. I had high expectations going to this restaurant because of the nice location on the water. The service was ok but my food came out not cooked (chicken sandwich) and my beer glass was all broken along the rim. Good thing I looked and didn't cut up my mouth. Now I know that this can happen for sure but I believe it is how a restaurant reacts and makes it right that makes the difference. In my case they did nothing. I paid for both and even when my sandwich came back it wasn't even fully cooked. Sadly I will likely not return. read more

We arrived around 7:00pm, and asked to be seated in the bar area for the view. We were shown out table and sat. It wasn't particularly busy, at all. We looked at the menu, and knew what we were going to order. After waiting about 5-7 minutes without service, GF walks up to bar and places out drink order. She comes back and we small talk a bit more. Now it's another 5 minutes and the drinks haven't come. She walks over to see what the issue is. The drinks were left on the bar, no server in sight. GF brings the drinks over to our table and I ask "What's up with this service? There's hardly anyone here." Waiter comes over after 2 minutes and asks has anyone taken our order, we reply no. He says, "Ok, I'm sorry about that. Not sure what happened. What can i get you folks?" Her: cheeseburger medium well Me: just a burger medium. Food came out a few moments later and looks good and we're hungry. A few bites into mine and I noticed it was cooked past medium, but i'm not going to complain. GF cuts her's in half and low and behold it's pink medium. Sigh...whatever, she's cool with it and I just kinda shake my head about it. Food was good overall. Now's here's what chapped my a**. The check comes, I pay in full + tip in cash. Waiter comes and grabs it. Doesn't ask if in need change or anything, not a word. About 7-10 minutes pass and I'm waiting for him to come back and close the loop, waiting for him to come back with the change...that's the protocol, right?...close out the transaction with the customer..."Thank you folks...hope everything was good...enjoy the rest of your evening...etc. As a waiter, you don't just take the check and assume the left over $ is your tip. You need to come back, and acknowledge the exchange of money, acknowledge the transaction. Didn't happen. Will I be back? Probably, because I'm a glutton for fair to good food with a nice view...and bad service. read more

Sad because I love the location and being able to sit outdoors on a nice day watching the waterway with Sandy Hook in the distance. I brought my daughter's partner here for a relaxing lunch. Our waitress seemed a bit off, as we sat for some time before asking us if we wanted drinks. Mind you, it was past the lunch rush, a weekday and the place was not crowded. We got our drinks, ordered our food and my guests plate had a long black hair entangled in her food. Gross. We told the waitress. She took her plate, mumbled oh sorry. About ten minutes later a heavyset gentleman with dark hair came to our table with a plate of food and said matter of factly, I don't know where that hair could have come from because no one in our kitchen has that type of hair, maybe it was your server. Really!!! Then he looked at me. I have chin length dark brown hair. Sorry that hair was in the damn plate when she put it down on the tablet, entangled in the food! Horrible manager! The Inlet Cafe is easily one of the best spots on the Jersey shore. From the amazing service and staff to the delicious food, the Inlet Cafe is a 5 star all around. I've been here twice and each time was a wonderful experience. Their happy hour is one of the best is the area with a variety of great eats and an endless list of drinks at unbeatable prices and almost always including live music. Tonight I went there for dinner on their outside patio and from the minute I arrived the service was friendly, enthusiastic and very efficient. Every employee had a mask on, tables were nicely spread apart and they even had cabana areas with a plastic curtain in between each table to ensure their customers felt safe. My server Jenna was everything a good server is suppose to be.Very personable, attentive and really made our experience enjoyable and memorable which is what a restaurant should always strive for. Each dish ordered was beautifully prepared and tasted even better. I had the chicken francese and left my plate looking like food had never even touched it after picking up every last drop of tasty lemon sauce with their fresh complimentary bread. Great food, service and location. Therefore, a longer wait. All the seafood dishes and sides we've ordered were fresh and delicious. Great drinks menu. Service was family-like rather than strictly business. I felt like I came over my cousin's house for dinner rather than a business establishment, which was a pleasant surprise. Outside seating offers a water view. All good things come at a price and, in this case, it's a long wait during rush hour (dinner). Expect an hour for outside seating on a weekend evening when the weather is good. Getting a table inside is much quicker, especially for smaller groups. I haven't checked if they take reservations but that would be the route to go. Overall, I highly recommend this place. read more

Inlet is a nice enough cafe with a fantastic view. When sitting outside, you can look right out at the water. A bonus is that they offer free docking for boaters (hey, guys--if any of you e v e r need a first mate, I've got a boating safety certificate and am available at any time...) and even offer to pick you up from Sandy Hook to dine in. For those of us who aren't living our dream yet, they have valet parking and a large indoor space. The service was a little slow--we had to wait a while for our sandwiches, but it was good once it came. I wish I'd ordered something else--my chicken sandwich was served on garlic bread, which made it really crunchy and unpleasant to eat, as crumbs fell in my lap. I also couldn't find a waitress to bring me a new fork, so I had to use a knife instead. I'd like to come back and try some of their other food--and if nothing else, have a drink and watch the boaters. read more

I've been to this place about 5 or 10 times over the past few years. I will admit that I've had a few good lunches there while sitting at the bar, when the restaurant is dead. But lets be honest, this place kind of sucks. The bar is smoky. The service is crumby on the deck. The inside is dark and dingy. The food prep is always off. And it's way way overpriced. Oh, almost forgot, there's no parking, except the valet, which is a joke for a restaurant with service as bad as this place has. I think one of the problems is that they probably hire so much clueless seasonal help. Recently, my date asked the food runner for a glass of water and his response was "can you ask your waitress?" Are you kidding me? That's just unacceptable. He might as well have said "get it yourself." That was just the beginning. Burger was way way overcooked, had to send it back. No tea-bag with my tea and I had to wait like 5 minutes to get one while staring at a cup of hot water. Pretty much every aspect of the meal was botched. Not to mention, at 5pm, I had wanted to order an oyster po-boy from the lunch menu and they wouldn't do it. That's fine, but if you're not going to accommodate me on that, don't expect me to be so accommodating in reviewing your restaurant. Anyway, the fish here is fresh. I'll give them that. And, the cole slaw is actually very good. But, generally, the food prep is really nothing special (especially considering the prices). I won't be going back. It was great to have dinner outside on the dock. The food was very good. Nice fresh pieces of fish, and good portions. Service was attentive. The prices seem reasonable compared to a lot of the other restaurants in the area. It's pretty casual and laid back. There was no live music when we were there, but there was a band next door at Windansea, which we could hear just fine. Great experience overall. read more

The best thing about this place is the view. The food is merely ok, edible, but not worth your time or the money, as it is fairly pricey for a dive on a rickety deck. Save your money, enjoy the view from the street, and then walk someplace else for a better meal. The flavors were fresh, crisp and vibrant. They are priced accordingly. The Inlet Crab Dip was very good. However, a bit pricey for an appetizer ($16.95). It does come with a healthy portion of veggies and bread for dipping. The calamari was crispy, and tender, unfortunately, a bit bland for my taste. Really wanted to love this new place!! We decided to try a Wednesday night, not too crowded. It was awful from the getgo. No hostess, someone finally seated us, a half hour to get someone's attention for a drink, ANOTHER half hour to wave down a waiter, had to ask a bus boy to please find us one. Ordered a shared apply, a burger (medium rare) and a salad and drinks. We had to yet again flag someone down after waiting way too long fior any sign of food. It came out stone cold (bet it was sitting somewhere), the medium rare burger was a burnt mess, inedible. No one came to ask if we were ok, or needed anything else, we got up and bought our own drinks at the bar after waiting way too long. Finally we got a bill and paid for our endurance test. Came here with my mom about a week ago after our beach trip to sandy hook. There is a bigger "fancier" looking place next door but the Inlet Cafe seemed busier and full of locals and that's what we usually use to gauge how good a place is. The staff was very friendly, we waited maybe 15 minutes and were able to order drinks while we waited. Our food was delicious, we enjoyed our drinks. The real treat was our server, who's name was, get this, Christopher Nolan. He was super attentive and accommodating and made our time at the Inlet Cafe just the best. After dinner we were looking at the view of the water, and I had to keel over onto a bench from being too full. Christopher came all the way outside the restaurant to see if I was okay and bring me some water. Such a sweetheart! It's the extra mile like that that really stands out. Not surprised to see they only have 3.5 stars. I've patronized The Inlet Cafe in the past whenever I was looking for a Waterfront Restaurant with outdoor seating. About 3 weeks ago I called to see if I could make a reservation for 17 people, outside seating, for my daughters High School graduation party. I spoke to a Victoria who told me that she could not confirm the reservation until she spoke to her manager and that she would get back to me. I received a call back the following day from Victoria telling me that my reservation for 17 people sitting outside was confirmed. She told me that because I was willing to come in as early as 4pm that it would not be a problem. Today, over two weeks later and only 3 days away from my reservation time, I received a phone call from a robin telling me that they could not accommodate my party. I explain to Robin that my reservation was confirmed to me after Victoria supposedly checked with her manager. I explained that this was my daughters High School graduation party and that almost my entire party was traveling from New York, where would I get a reservation for 17 people on a Saturday with this little notice? Robin could not care less and gave me several different stories on why she would not take my party. First story was that there was another large party booked for that time. Second Story was that there was some sort of event going on and no reservations were supposed to be made. She offered to place my party inside as opposed outside but wanting to sit outside was the reason I made this reservation in the first place. Robin was rude and just kept talking over me when I asked her how she could turn away a party of 17 with this little notice after her employees told me I was confirmed over 2 weeks ago. Terrible business. Terrible customer service. The Inlet Cafe not only lost a party of 17 who would have ran up a very large bill ordering lobsters and plenty of alcohol I'm sure, but also lost and entire family who have been customers for many years. read more

This is a "Dive with a View". Located on the Sandy Hook Bay, with a view of Sandy Hook and the Manhattan skyline wa-a-a-y out in the distance if you look hard enough. The restaurant looks like they can seat about 75 people outside. The inside dining area was closed. They have parking for about 10-15 cars max. The rest is street parking. And with the "Windansea Restaurant" next door, street parking can be difficult to find. And since they are located in a very small town with homes built just about on-top of each other, with minimal side yards, where you have driveways every 25 feet, or so, this adds to the parking shortage. We parked on a side street about 2-1/2 blocks away. To start, when a restaurant has a hostess, who's ONLY job (as in this case) is to greet guests with a smile, take names and give estimated times as to how long before the guest will be seated... before hiring them, maybe the restaurant needs to give a simple "competency" test. Here's the test: "How long does it take to cook a 3 minute egg?" ...This hostess would have failed. We get there, she tells us "30 minutes". 45 minutes later, we go up to her for an update, she says, "3 minutes". 10+/- minutes later, my little lobster (their paging system) flashes and vibrates. We were then seated by their "seater" (an woman in her early 60's- Wifey just corrected me... in her 50's. Ooops-- who would laugh and smile with the "timeless" hostess, but would change to a dead-pan face once she was handed the menus in order to escort the customers to their table). Amazing, this restaurant hires two people to do the job of one (remember, I was a Maitre' d years ago at an upscale restaurant, so I'm familiar with what it takes to do this job), who are the first impression that people will see when they arrive, and both have minimal, or no, customer service sense. So on to the dining phase. Our waiter was Anthony. Anthony was, prompt, personal, pleasant, smiled often and had great eye-to-eye contacts. He took our drink order, gave us adequate time to view the menu, then took our dinner order. Pricing wise, the Inlet Café takes full advantage of their location... Wifey had the house Pinot Grigio ("Fetzers", which wholesales for under $7 for a 750ml bottle), and I ordered a Blue Moon (10oz +/-). ...$13.50. Later I asked for a Grey Goose and seltzer in a "tall glass". I wasn't looking to get more liquor for the same price, I just didn't want a rock glass filled with vodka and a splash of seltzer which would knock me on my butt. The request for a "tall glass" cost us an additional $2 for a "double". I don't remember asking for a double. But in all fairness, the drink was strong. ...just what I was trying to avoid. Food was so-so. They start you off with cole slaw and bread. No salad. Cole slaw was tasty, bread fresh and crusty... good. I ordered the Oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer ($15). EXCELLENT, except for the splintered shell pieces. The right combination fennel or anise (the classic recipe calls for Pernod, but I kinda doubt they use Pernod), parmesan and spinach, with fresh tasting oysters. Wifey ordered Fish and Chips ($20). This was 2 HUGE, over-breaded, way too heavy, pieces of fish with frozen shoestring French fries. No malt vinegar offered. I ordered the Lobster Salad Platter ($23). It was a good size portion, with a nice presentation. It would have deserved a "pretty good", except that it was bland and for the huge piece of lobster cartilage that was left in it. This salad included a good portion of lobster salad, nicely uniformed chopped fresh tomatoes, cucumber slices, hard-boiled egg, avocado over a (I believe) spring mix lettuce. The other downer on this was it was missing a good accompanying dressing choice. You could order any of their house dressing, but this type of salad deserves it's own unique dressing. The young fella who brought out the food (food runner) had a great personality... big smile, happy disposition, and asked if we needed anything else? He really got engaged. Wish I knew his name, I'd like to give him some formal recognition. In summary: Price-wise: Was the pricing structure in line with the quality of the food & drink? ...a bit over-priced. C'mon... $20 bucks for a heavy Fish and Chips with frozen French fries? Nah. They truly do take advantage of their location... that's fair. They have a good location (view wise only). People will continue to go there for that reason alone. Will I go back? Not sure. Maybe next time if/when I feel like waiting to be seated twice longer than being told by the hostess, being slightly over-charged, and wanting to park far way from where I'm going to eat. Would I recommend it? Don't know. I'm on the fence with this one. For me, Anthony, the food runner and the Oysters Rockefeller were their only saving grace. read more

I'm sure our experience on this visit was not the norm, as we dined here on a busy Sunday evening. While the server was great, attentive, and kept us updated about our meal, our two sandwiches took AN HOUR to arrive to our table. The crabby pretzel app was mediocre. I'm certain the pretzel had been frozen and if not, it sure seemed like it had. When our sandwiches arrived, my husband liked his lobster roll but all his fries were stuck together. Clearly they'd been sitting! My chicken sandwich was not even worth the calories. The mozz was not warm, and the bread was over toasted. Hard actually. As for the onion rings....they had DEFINITELY been re-fried. They were so crispy and well done that I'm sure they'd sat for so long and the only way to "freshen them up" was to drop them back in the oil. You will get a casual dining experience here. So to begin with, don't expect luxury service and Michelin rated food, as some people reviewing seem to expect. I don't know when garbage day is in Highlands, but the dumpster to the side/front of the building (in the parking lot) was quite smelly on a hot day. Great view when seated on the deck in the back. Our waitress seemed pretty busy when we got there but still refilled my iced tea without asking and managed to be attentive enough to our table. She was very nice too. We ordered a soft shell crab sandwich and fried cod sandwich, and started with an octopus salad special. The salad was tasty though they should have gone easier on the dressing. The crab was pretty tasty, as are most fried things. My mom seemed to enjoy her cod as well. The fries on the side were delicious. The prices are reasonable so overall the food is pretty good for what you pay. The view is even better. read more

Nice atmosphere at the dockside seafood bar and grill. I Loved that you can see the relaxing bay while listening to tunes and chilling with friends. They played a variety of music, West Coast Snoop Dogg then Tim McGraw country then Aerosmith and Rolling Stones. The service was fast and friendly and food was good. My only negative comment was the waiter wasnt knowledgeable of the menu. If the food description wasn't posted on the menu he had to inquire within. For example he didn't know what was in the oyster rockefeller. I ordered oyester rockefeller, cheese spinach garlic and butter smothered on oysters. Delicious! I also had the Inlet seafood mix, clams shrimp scallops and a half lobster with side of vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was very good and my gut was happy. read more
