I found myself in Haddonfield, NJ with time to spare after taking my father to a medical appointment, which is how many small adventures begin. King's Highway has a charming little stretch of independent ambition, all tidy storefronts and quiet confidence. This is where you can find The British Chip Shop, which I had long intended to try, and at last my synapses and my hunger aligned. The place was empty when I entered, which always feels like it could be either a warning or a gift. A voice from the kitchen promised to appear, and did, promptly and kindly, seating me by the window like a character in a underattended play. I ordered the daily special: Pork pie, mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and added a Tango orange soda for good measure. The pork pie arrived hot and full of purpose, the kind of food that knows exactly what it is. The mushy peas were fresh and honest. The mashed potatoes, however, seemed to have lost the will to live, bland and harboring a cold, defiant lump of butter at their center. The soda did exactly what it claimed, which is all one can ask of a soda. Only later did I notice I could have swapped the peas and mash for chips, and for a few dollars more added cheese and curry sauce. This knowledge arrived to me too late, as most useful knowledge does. Next time, I will be wiser. All told, an enjoyable, slightly pricey lunch with one unfortunate spud based misadventure. Still, if you find yourself wandering this lovely town, it is worth stepping inside. Four stars, because curiosity was rewarded, if not perfectly fed. read more

Fish and Chips very good indeed - expertly battered and fried cod; not easy to replicate authentic British chip shop chips though without a proper chip shop vat for frying. The sausage roll was above average and the meat pie was really good, both pastry and meat filling were authentic and delicious. Personally I prefer a plain beef and onion gravy, without the added herbs and vinegar. The mushy peas were excellent And the sticky toffee pudding was truly outstanding - a work of pure genius. The service was exceptional, friendly and attentive to detail. The ambiance was quiet and relaxing. The owner took the time to talk to us and make us feel welcome. We ordered the sausage roll appetizer and both had the haddock fish & chips & a side of mushy peas. I had to have an irn bru which was fabulous, as always!! Fish was disappointing, frozen, still cold in the middle, batter was mediocre at best, chips were good, wished I had just ordered chips & curry sauce honestly. The scones are awesome! No matter which scone I've tried, they are all fantastic. My favorites include any with a peanut butter or chocolate chip flavor. The Triple Peanut Butter Chip, is my absolute fav, so if you are a peanut butter fan be sure to get that one, if available. Flavors rotate in and out based on what the baker makes. These scones have a perfect crusty exterior with an soft but not overly buttery interior packed with the intended flavor. I've always grabbed extra to bring home. The scones for me are the main attraction but it wasn't intended that way, because they may have the best fish and chips ever,.... Sometimes. The crunch on these fish and chips when done right is outstanding. I wouldn't change a single thing with the batter in those instances. A deliciously light yellowish coating adorns the filet with a beautiful filet underneath. That was my first experience which brought me back for a few more. The fish may be a little under seasoned but I wonder if that is by design to take advantage of dipping into the tartar sauce that accompanies the dish which has been a constant good partner. On other occasions when it is not done right, the fish definitely overstayed its visit to the fryer and the exterior is a darker shade of brown. I've also had entrees where the fish filet is noticeably smaller and that's when it's not exactly the best ever. The fries are not just not my favorite. In my mind, fries should be crispy or crunchy, something these just weren't. I've asked for extra crispy as well but until I get on a plane to the UK and get the original I guess I can't judge fully. It's almost as if they are fried first and fried again but the temp on the second run was a lower temp leading to a soggier fry perhaps. I've been meaning to try this place out so I got some fish and chips to go. I'm not gonna lie I was not impressed. Very pricey, not a lot of quantity and taste was average I got the large fish and chips and a side of the gravy and the curry. It came to $34! The side of the gravy and curry each were $12?! They were so small. And they even forgot my tartar sauce The best part of the dish was the fries. Seasoned well, hot and crispy. The fish was uneven, some parts were crispy and some were soggy and no seasoning what so ever. Too bad I didn't have tartar sauce so that didn't help. The curry was tasty but the gravy was way too watery and needed more flavor. For one dish with two dipping sauces for $34 it better be the best fish and chips but unfortunately it was not. 2.85/5 read more

My bestie and I were out and about and decided to do a little "taste of Haddonfield" tour. We stopped at a different eatery first, and were completely let down. He suggested we head over to the British Chip Shop for some "disco" fries to cheer us up. First of all, our server was the sweetest. She helped us navigate the many different varieties of British soda choices. We decided to try not only the disco "chips", but the fish and curry chips, as well. First it needs to be pointed out that the service here is excellent. Our server was one of the sweetest people ever and very informative about the menu. The place was very clean and has pretty cool decor. We had several items off of the menu and everything was beyond our expectations. I actually had to get boxes for take away. That rarely happens. Wow, the best British Fish N Chips shop I have been to yet. We do not have them like these back home. We stopped here for some Fish n Chips I have not had in a long time. Place has everything England on the menu that they eat back home too. I was amazed of the great smell of fries and fish as we walked inside. They greeted and seated us with smiles. They must be short staffed (isn't everyone anymore?) The server was taking care of the entire dining area and I thought he did a great job hitting everyone at just the right time. The menu is interesting, especially the breakfast portion, and various British soft drinks. I went with the typical Fish & Chips though just to keep it simple. I liked that they offer a small and large serving on the menu and went with the small order, which came out fast and was the perfect portion. The tartar sauce tasted home made, little heavy on the mayo side, but paired well with the fish. The chips could have been a little more well done. Pricing was fair and the bathroom was clean. The floor was sticky, the furniture battered, the place just had a general look of neglect. My large cod & chips was not good. Stopped in last Sunday whilst strolling the lovely shops of Haddonfield. At first glance I was not sure they were open! There were 5 tables not bussed, disgusting. No one greeted us as we stood awkwardly for many minutes. There was 1 person working. We were finally seated. She eventually took our orders. As more and more people lined up to be seated they had to wait progressively longer and longer. It was very awkward as the waitress struggled to serve, take orders, and seat people. Finally 2 customers started to clean up the mess on the table closest to them. It was so prohibitively gross in there, I did not finish my far below average roast beef sandwich. Horrible. I'm a regular customer, or I used to be. I was out for a bike ride and started to feel very sick and light headed. Went in with shaking hands and asked to use the bathroom and the young girl behind the counter told me it's the policy that I can't use the bathroom unless I'm paying. Like I said I've eaten here many times but was not trying to pop in for a bite during a medical emergency. I was worried I might be about to have a heart attack or worse. I asked to see the boss but she said he was busy and basically just argued with me. I'm a 50 year old woman. Is this how we treat our elders these days? Meh. I wanted to like this place. Finally made it here after wanting to check it out for a while, and while it was OK it wasn't anything to write home about. The fact that it was a Friday evening and we were one of only two parties in the restaurant should have been my first clue, but we went ahead and ate anyway. I had the fish and chips. The fish was delicious and well cooked, but the fries were severely soggy and floppy. My wife had the bangers and mash. The sausage was yummy, the gravy was tasty but underwhelming, and the most shocking part, the mashed potatoes were instant flakes from the box. Come on guys. I wasn't expecting a fine dining experience at a local fish and chips shop, but instant potatoes? Y'all. The service was friendly and prompt. The Chip Shop is a nice staple of Haddonfield. I'm always down for this place when I'm in the mood for an English Breakfast because the concept of putting beans next to my eggs and grilling a tomato at home is DAUNTING. My wife and I have frequented quite often since we moved here in 2014. The restaurant itself is a little dark, I guess they're trying to recreate a British pub but then again Haddonfield is a dry town. There is outside seating and very pleasant on a nice spring and summer day. The food is always up to par, but you come to be downtown if you're tired of going to the Bistro for the hundredth time, people watching on Kings Highway. I've been as fan of the BCS for a very long time. When the owners announced their retirement, I was dismayed. But then, someone bought the business! Yay! I waited a while to visit so they could get up to speed (and I have limited income). So, on St Patrick's day weekend (Friday night), my Irish wife wanted to try their corned beef and cabbage. The cook misread the order, and put together a corned beef sandwich instead. So, it was about 45 minutes of us sitting at the table with glasses of water. No problem; we like each other. It arrived finally, and she liked the corned beef. The rest was in the just ok category - and the single golf ball sized boiled potato had a 1/4 of it black. Yum. I'm not a corned beef fan, so I order chicken and chips. It's fish and chips with chicken strips instead. (I've had enough fish lately). I've had it before and it was wonderful - being the marquee item and all. It's in the name of the business! It was ****ing disgusting. The barely cooked potatoes were lying in a pool of oil and shimmered from the oil on top. The oil was obviously far too cool, probably under 300F. The batter on the very thin slices of chicken (the strips used to be substantial) just fell off when you touched it. The only way this plate could have been worse is if a penguin took a projectile dump on it. So what's the problem? Incompetent cook? A teenager who doesn't care? Did they put the chicken/chips in, notice that the sandwich order should have been a meal, took the chicken/chips out and just left it on the plate while they made the meal. The server took it back. It was cooked a bit more when returned, but still bad. I ended up eating one strip and one chip. So, on our rare night out, I spent 30 something bucks and ended up eating a sandwich when we got home. Look, I hate being critical. But this has been annoying me for over a week now whenever I think about it - a ruined night out and a needless expense. Of course the solution is to not think about it - which I won't now. And I won't revisit this business. read more

I am rating this place a 5 star for the food alone. Everything we ate here was cooked perfectly and the dishes are extremely authentic to what you would find in England. Something that is very hard to find here in the US. For starters we tried the sausage roll and welsh rarebit. On the entrees I had the large fish and chips with cod. They also have a haddock option. Easily the best fish and chips I've had in the US. My fiance had the curry chicken salad which she also loved. If I were to take off stars it would be for two things. The first was the slow service. It wasn't horrible, but it could have been better considering the place only had 4-5 tables with customers. The other complaint was the lack of low tabletop seating. The majority of their seating is high tables, sans 3-4 tables off on the corner. Everyone that came in after us also wanted low top seating so I know we aren't the only ones. As a disabled person I cannot sit in a booth or high top table. Something worth considering if the place is busy. read more

Unfortunately coming in a wheelchair is no guarantee someone will even acknowledge you. Even with customers going around my wife after asking if she was in line for baked goods, neither the woman at the counter nor the server would acknowledge her in the 15 minutes she was waiting. Generally, a wheelchair is fairly conspicuous especially in a smaller space. Even when my daughter had to turn her around so they could leave, no one so much as acknowledged them. Phone calls were also ignored when I attempted to follow up that night. My only contact was 48 hours later on Facebook, and then it was, "sorry that happened." With half the tables empty, they were too busy to even acknowledge a customer(after 15 minutes), a behavior that would be shocking at McDonald's, let alone an establishment that should have a far higher quality of service. read more

Located in the downtown area of Haddonfield. I just moved to South Jersey so I'm exploring all the little towns. And the restaurant is located in a great location! Lots of street parking.. i came on a Friday night and had no problems. It was after 6pm so I didn't even have to pay the meter! The restaurant itself wasn't busy at all... 3 other tables had guests so it was a pretty quiet night. Of course had to try the fish n chips. My husband also tried the potato leek soup which was delicious! Fish n chips were light and crispy. Pretty well seasoned and a good size portion. Next time when I come back.. will definitely save room for dessert because their pudding menu for desserts looked amazing! I forgot to take a picture of the menu! Will definitely come back! Toasting my usual 'Britannia Rules the Waves', or 'God Save the Queen' is decidedly less unusual at The British Chip Shop. Where else can one's eccentricities be so thoroughly appeased with such simple goodness. I've tried most of the menu, with 'Bangers and Mash' being a real standout. Their authentic Cumberland sausages and HP sauce take me where I want to go (which is not south jersey). Do: order a pot of earl grey. also try the ploughman's sandwich. get the bean dip for an appetizer. bring a date. I love the attention paid to keeping the theme 'All things British'. Churchill and the Queen watch over their host from the comfort of their picture frames, as the Union Jack presides over it's mealtime subjects. The Chip Shop is also pleasantly quiet; no doubt a reflection of the culture, and the people who understand it. I could, however, do with a good deal less 'Oasis'...we've all heard enough of 'Sally Can Wait', thank you very much. Most of the staff is extremely friendly. The owner answers questions, if one has any, and two waitresses in particular (Isabella & one who's name escapes me) are fun, and indulge me (and everyone I've brought) my peculiarity. When I ordered the "Empire Biscuits" (in mid March), I thought it was hilarious that they were cast in the shape of shamrocks. I interpreted that as a clear and sardonic dig towards the Irish, until My Lady reminded me that it's just St. Patty's day. Here, this was a good solid laugh for all, instead of an incriminating wag of the finger. Did I mention that The Chip Shop is a B.Y.O.? Add a couple of 'Old Speckled Hens' to the mix, and you might well have set yourself up for a splendid evening. We came for a late dinner. I really like the understated British decor and high & HUGE wood tables. Lots of photos to enjoy too. There's also a cozy gas fireplace towards the small back area. Their fries, or chips, are really good and I usually don't like fries or any potatoes, except sweet potatoes! I had their vegetable (root ones) curry over jasmine rice and it was really quite good - lots of big carrot slices througout. I'm not big on overly spicy food and for me, this was borderline. Still and all, very good and a great winter's meal! Vince and my guys had the fish and a burger. The fish is sooooo good! Fluffy and not too greasy or overly fried at all. Nom, nom, nom! My son wasn't too keen on the burger, which I'm not sure why as they taste sooo much like my mom's! He then got their macaroni and cheese w/ bacon crumbles and was a happy camper for sure! Vince was just meh on his chicken pot pie (w/ pastry puffed top) but loved the fish as all of us did. My girl ate her brother's leftover burger, in addition to trying mine, which she liked too.
