My friend and I were stuck in traffic getting out of Sandy Hook and looked up places to go to on Yelp. Before we got to the bridge, we looked over the river and saw the Inlet Cafe. It had decent reviews and decided to try it out. What a great move. So happy and pleased. We left the beach because it started to rain a little so when we got to the Inlet, they were just setting up outside seating. The hostess was really nice and asked us to hang for a few. We waited a little, but no big deal: we had beers from the bar and sat on one of the benches overlooking Sandy Hook. We had a dozen oysters to start and the Santa Fe Mahi Mahi and Soft Shell Crab over linguine entrees. Oysters were so fresh and delicious and the entrees were delicious and substantial and filling but not too much. Will definitely be back! read more

We have been going to the Inlet Cafe for many years now. We enjoy the bartenders and the staff very much. We have taken clients, out of towners, family members and friends over the years. Yet when Doug or whats her name sees us......zero recognition. We Probably spend over $3,000 plus a season. It would be nice to get a hello or a free drink now or then. We have decided to enjoy the many other options along the bayshore......not to mention they are way overpriced, it's a river not the Riviera. read more

Came here with my mom about a week ago after our beach trip to sandy hook. There is a bigger "fancier" looking place next door but the Inlet Cafe seemed busier and full of locals and that's what we usually use to gauge how good a place is. The staff was very friendly, we waited maybe 15 minutes and were able to order drinks while we waited. Our food was delicious, we enjoyed our drinks. The real treat was our server, who's name was, get this, Christopher Nolan. He was super attentive and accommodating and made our time at the Inlet Cafe just the best. After dinner we were looking at the view of the water, and I had to keel over onto a bench from being too full. Christopher came all the way outside the restaurant to see if I was okay and bring me some water. Such a sweetheart! It's the extra mile like that that really stands out. Not surprised to see they only have 3.5 stars. I've patronized The Inlet Cafe in the past whenever I was looking for a Waterfront Restaurant with outdoor seating. About 3 weeks ago I called to see if I could make a reservation for 17 people, outside seating, for my daughters High School graduation party. I spoke to a Victoria who told me that she could not confirm the reservation until she spoke to her manager and that she would get back to me. I received a call back the following day from Victoria telling me that my reservation for 17 people sitting outside was confirmed. She told me that because I was willing to come in as early as 4pm that it would not be a problem. Today, over two weeks later and only 3 days away from my reservation time, I received a phone call from a robin telling me that they could not accommodate my party. I explain to Robin that my reservation was confirmed to me after Victoria supposedly checked with her manager. I explained that this was my daughters High School graduation party and that almost my entire party was traveling from New York, where would I get a reservation for 17 people on a Saturday with this little notice? Robin could not care less and gave me several different stories on why she would not take my party. First story was that there was another large party booked for that time. Second Story was that there was some sort of event going on and no reservations were supposed to be made. She offered to place my party inside as opposed outside but wanting to sit outside was the reason I made this reservation in the first place. Robin was rude and just kept talking over me when I asked her how she could turn away a party of 17 with this little notice after her employees told me I was confirmed over 2 weeks ago. Terrible business. Terrible customer service. The Inlet Cafe not only lost a party of 17 who would have ran up a very large bill ordering lobsters and plenty of alcohol I'm sure, but also lost and entire family who have been customers for many years. read more

I'm sure our experience on this visit was not the norm, as we dined here on a busy Sunday evening. While the server was great, attentive, and kept us updated about our meal, our two sandwiches took AN HOUR to arrive to our table. The crabby pretzel app was mediocre. I'm certain the pretzel had been frozen and if not, it sure seemed like it had. When our sandwiches arrived, my husband liked his lobster roll but all his fries were stuck together. Clearly they'd been sitting! My chicken sandwich was not even worth the calories. The mozz was not warm, and the bread was over toasted. Hard actually. As for the onion rings....they had DEFINITELY been re-fried. They were so crispy and well done that I'm sure they'd sat for so long and the only way to "freshen them up" was to drop them back in the oil. Really wanted to love this new place!! We decided to try a Wednesday night, not too crowded. It was awful from the getgo. No hostess, someone finally seated us, a half hour to get someone's attention for a drink, ANOTHER half hour to wave down a waiter, had to ask a bus boy to please find us one. Ordered a shared apply, a burger (medium rare) and a salad and drinks. We had to yet again flag someone down after waiting way too long fior any sign of food. It came out stone cold (bet it was sitting somewhere), the medium rare burger was a burnt mess, inedible. No one came to ask if we were ok, or needed anything else, we got up and bought our own drinks at the bar after waiting way too long. Finally we got a bill and paid for our endurance test. After all that "fun", we had to pay $100!!! Nope, you only get to take advantage of me once. We live locally and the rumbles were that it was poorly run and not worth it. Spending the wknd back on East Coast to celebrate my Dad's 70th Birthday. Parents live in Upstate NY, Sister and her Boyfriend live in Somerset, NJ, and I live in Phoenix, AZ. Dad's only request for the wknd was to have a good meal on the waterfront. Yelp here I came... and like Tracie C posted last month, Yelpers didn't disappoint. While making the reservation was a little rocky, we were seated within 5min of arriving for our reservation, and on a night when they had a 40-person wedding rehearsal dinner party and another family party of 20. Have to say that once we hit our table staff did not miss a beat. And with 15+yrs of restaurant experience, I'm not the easiest guy to impress. Kudos to the wait, bus & kitchen staff. Now for the food... Sister & Boyfriend both enjoyed the NE Clam Chowder. My dinner salad ($3 add-on to entree) was large enough for at least 2. My Blackened Tuna was fresh, good flavor, and cooked to order. Sister had Inlet Scallops (Sea Scallops with Lobster Bisque-like sauce which she RAVED over). Boyfriend plowed thru the Mahi Mahi. Mom, who at first disappointed about lack of ability to substitute sides (due to large parties in-house), RAVED (YES! I say RAVED!) over the Flounder - best she's ever had! And dear, old Dad definitely enjoyed his Sandy Hooker - hey, that's what they call it on the menu! Dinner wouldn't have been complete without a couple of desserts - Sister's love of Chocolate Cupcakes and Dad's love of Key Lime Pie. After reading a few other Yelpers' comments about the facility, I think I need to say a few things to the contrary. No, it's not a yacht club, so no table linens, napkins, nor fine crystal. But, for a nice, clean, outdoor, waterfront dining experience, I was pleasantly surprised. The plastic resin dining chairs were very sturdy and the table didn't wobble - way ahead in my book. All foenjoyed the meal we had. I had baked stuff shrimp with crab which was good. I am used to having jumbo size stuffed shrimp these were 4 regular size shrimp. I love The Inlet Cafe. It's where I feel in love with my now boyfriend, and father of my son! I've taken my family and friends here when they come from PA to visit, and they love it. I've never eaten inside, I mean with the view this place offers, sitting inside would be silly. I love the square shaped bar, which is under a roof covering. Some great long time tending bar mates will give you a good experience! The food. Yummmmy! I love the LOBSTER BISQUE. Real lobster with great taste, and always comes out hot. The Inlet is known for its seafood, and I've never gone without getting the claims in white wine sauce, I sometimes ask for more garlic bread that it comes with to soak up the rest of the juice! Everything here is truly awesome. From the service, to the cocktails, to the food to the atmosphere. I recently moved about a mile away and I came to Inlet cafe all summer long. The food is delicious and I love the live entertainment at night (possibly only on weekends, I'm not sure). I love coming here in the summer for rum buckets. some favorites- the ahi tuna tacos are DELICIOUS, the fried shrimp appetizer with the special sauce, the inlet clams, and the crab stuffed shrimp dinner. My friend is a huge fan of fried clams and he says the Inlet cafe makes the best he's ever had. Went early this evening (Saturday) to ensure we would get an outside table. Beautiful views of the inlet. Started with a Rum Bucket, a giant rum drink that was strong and delicious. I had the Tokyo Tuna with seaweed salad, rice pilaf and vegetables. It was very good, but it wasn't rare as I requested. Great place. Was in the area today and came across this wonderful restaurant. Hostess was friendly and our waitress was friendly and on the ball. The bread is good and fresh. Started with the Crab Trap Dip which was amazing. My son had kids mozzarella sticks and fries and loved it. My husband had the Black and Bleu burger and enjoyed it. This was my first time at this restaurant and I had high expectations based on past reviews. My experience was very disappointing. I arrived and was told there would be a 45 minute wait. I waited for almost 2 hours for a table and when there was many tables available. I was sat with 2 other individuals and we received our food before we received our drinks and when our drinks came (non-alcoholic so no preparation needed) the order was wrong. The waitress never looked us in the eyes and took over 15 minutes to come get the check after leaving it. I spent $72 on subpar unseasoned food (Crab Cake Sandwich and Inlet Clams). My girlfriend and I stopped in here after an afternoon at Sandy Hook, and we are SO happy that we did. It's a beautiful seafood place that appears upscale but is quite casual. The owner herself seated us and chatted about recently re-opening for the season. Our server was great, very attentive and friendly and made sure we always had food and drinks without having to get her attention first. The food was some of the best I have ever had. The provide a warm half-loaf of bread for the table, as well as coleslaw (how they make coleslaw this good I have no clue). We had the crab dip for our appetizer, and it came out sizzling hot with a selection of bread, carrot and celery sticks. Very tasty with lots of crab. I had the lobster roll and onion rings, and they were happy to substitute the hot dog bun for a grilled hamburger roll, and gave me SO much delicious lobster meat. I have spent plenty of time in Maine, and never had a roll this good. My girlfriend got their seafood sampler and everything was so hot and fresh. We couldn't finish the large portions they provided so they boxed the remainder up for us. Last but not least they serve their beer cold in a frozen/frosted mug - the perfect companion for seafood. We used to love this place, but our most recent experience was dreadful. Its just become a place with nice scenery where they can churn out mediocre food and make as much money on drinks as possible. I had some sort stuffed flounder which they soaked in some sort of gravy like your would use on meatloaf. The steamer were ok. The lobster roll had all some shredded lobster that must have come from some supplier that shreds it and freezes it, no chunks. We used to like this place, now we'll never return. read more

My sister and I went to Sandy Hook Beach today and after a day at the beach we discovered the Inlet Cafe! What a gem this place is! Laura was our waitress, she was friendly, helpful, and very attentive. We ordered a house salad, raw oysters, crab stuffed mushrooms, and 2 orders of the Inlet Cafe Assortment. We also ordered a Mango Daiquiri and a Blue River cocktail. To wrap things up we had the Apple Tart with ice cream and the Smore's Ice Cream Sundae. All the food was so fresh, tasty and delicious. $12 for a Tiki drink (Caribbean Storm) which should have contained 4 different alcohols. I am surprised they had room left for any liquid at all with all the ice in it. I wasn't going there to get intoxicated but trust me, there was no alcohol in that drink. Even a half ounce of each liquor should have been 2 ounces, trust me, I would have felt it at 2pm in the afternoon (same as my wife's drink, nothing). The roll my "soft" shell crab came on was stale or at least getting there. Not toasted, not soft, nothing but stale bread - I ate it alone, should have ordered it with the rice pilaf instead. Not adhering to any social distancing guidelines!!!!Locals seem to run the place and were all around the bar in spots clearly marked not to sit there. Many people had no masks on walking around and no masks on in the bathroom. Our service and food sucked. The main course was never rang in and came so late. We felt as if our personal space was being terribly intruded upon. Even under normal circumstances this place is a mess. I will never return. They must do a better job to enforce the rules. You know this kind of place: great, fun summer atmosphere outside but the food is only "ehh." The burger was fine...steamers good...scallops with lobster on top had the lobster hidden in some sort of very heavy "upset-your-stomach" sauce, which you could tell by looking at it, was a bad idea. Been to this place numerous times, always a great time, good food but last night it was unreal.....June 23, 2021....What a HORRIBLE experience tonight at The Inlet Cafe in Highlands NJ, after sitting at the bar and putting in our drink order we were asked if we would like to order something to eat, we said yes and asked for menus...she pointed to the QR code sticker in front of us. They were all over the bar area. We got the menu on our phone and ordered.  Food arrived and we ate it, it was a good meal....we asked for the bill and I handed her my cc to save her a trip back. When we got the bill, it was obviously too high and we questioned the girl behind the bar. We compared the prices on the bill to the menu, and we were overcharged almost $9. The bartender said she would get Robin to deal with it, it's no big deal.  About 5-7 min later Robin came out with sort of a negative tone to her voice. She put 2 menus down on the bar that were brought out from the other room as there were NO physical menus at the entire bar. After showing her that 3 of the 3 prices for items we ordered were all wrong, she loudly told us THIS IS THE MENU WE USE.  I said ok, well we were told to use the QR Code on the bar.  She again aggressively told us THIS IS THE MENU. THAT ONE IS FOR COVID.  I asked her how we were to know that, as that's the one we were told to use. She then said fine  I'll change the bill, but you two should never  come back AGAIN.  We were stunned at what just happen as well as others at the bar eating.  They looked at us like WTF was that?!. We said we have no idea as all we did was question the bill, she NEVER came back out and had the barmaid give us a $10.00 refund.  We've been going there for years but we will never step foot in there again. We were both totally embarrassed by her treatment of us as she was loud and obnoxious toward the both of us, in front of the other patrons and staff.  She is an embarrassment to that restaurant and Highlands. As a part owner of the restaurant,  she knew the menu that bar patrons were using and had WRONG PRICES. We honestly saw 3 other couples use the same QR code menu. Is "a hint" really worth shutting out even a small percentage of potential customers and all the non-vegetarians in their parties?)) nor entrée menu option. Called ahead though, and after much awkward communication with the young woman answering the phone, was able to order what turned out to be a very good (See above...) grilled vegetable sandwich. Now I do like it (It's all about the location and eating outdoors (Would never go and eat inside, where casual becomes a bit divey.).) and will go back, but the restaurant's website's home page declaration of 'Waterside Dining at its Finest' is so overstated as to not only be absurd but to potentially even work against the place by creating false expectations where realistic ones would suffice. Very SAD vegetarian options. Super cute atmosphere so my friends and I came for a cocktail and dinner. But being a vegetarian, my only option was a $15 salad, or the vegetable "side dishes". If I could rate less then 1, I would. I beg you to save your money, and do not go to inlet cafe. Let's start with the menu, the online menu was extensive, and a nice variety for a family who needs choices. Once we arrived we found out that the menu was about 1/2 that of options. I appreciate a busy restaurant, however we waited over an hr just to receive our salads and soups, another hour waiting for dinner. In total our time there was 2 1/2 hrs, and that was not spent sitting and enjoying each others company, rather that was how long it took to get food. Then they forgot one of the meals. The manager came over to apologize only after one of us had to go say something. As usual the answer was new ppl and under staffed. Thats fine, but if you actually knew how to run a restaurant then you would have not sat all the tables they did, rather trickle the guest, go on a wait and fair warn them, and thank them for their patience and understanding. . Inlet cafe is clearly more concerned with quantity, not quality. And frankly, as a manager, you should not allow your staff to run around accomplishing nothing, but chip in and help, as opposed to making it a social event for yourself, shame on inlet, shame on mgmt. My understanding is, it has new mgmt. Perhaps you have ventured into the wrong business, you clearly suck at what you do. I wish I could say the food was worth the wait, it was clear that we were forgotten about, food was salty, a ribeye claiming to be 20 oz, was not. And because of the hurry to cook our food, the ribeye was charred on the outside, burgers overcooked, and overall the food was just terrible. At the end the bill was $300, for food not worth it. We all work hard for our money, spend it somewhere else that you would enjoy, this is not the place. you will not find that here, other then the atmosphere and view,they offer nothing. While out and about, Hubby and I have learned to trust Yelp reviewers... and once again you guys did not disappoint. For starters I had the Inlet Clams and hubby had the soup sampler. Both were really good. Maybe a wee bit salty for me, but hubby didn't think so. So the salt is all personal preference. The sauce for the clams was garlicky and oh so good! Perfect to dip the garlic bread in. For dinner he had the lobster & shrimp saute. The lobster and shrimp were cooked PERFECTLY. The sauce was heavenly... I was boring (due to not being all that hungry to begin with with) and settled for a cup of the NE clam chowder. When a NE clam chowder is not milk white but rather an off-white/tan you know it's going to be a bit more hearty and usually delicious. As it was. When we're back in the area we will be back but hopefully it will be warm enough this time to sit outside and take in the view. read more

Couldn't Get Any Better ! After leaving the beach at Sandy Hook, we decided to check out the seafood restaurants along the Highlands waterfront on the west side of Sandy Hook Bay. After driving over the Navesink Ave. Bridge, and then down onto Bay Ave., we bypassed several restaurants and continued on to Cornwall St. We knew we would find the Inlet Cafe again as we had dined there prior to hurricane Sandy. Although still quite early for dinner (5PM) the bar and restaurant were jumping! I pulled the convertible into the lot (which was full) and asked my wife to have our name placed on the wait list; left the keys in the car for the valet and quickly found seats at the bar as a couple were just leaving. (We were given an approx. 40 min. wait time.) Your handed a carved wooden lobster which, in actuality, is a device which buzzes alerting you that your table is ready; very nautical and appropriate! We ordered drinks and a crab meat dip appetizer which was awesome and not to be missed! Finished up at the bar and walked over to the seawall to watch the boats returning to the marina as well as scores of ducklings in and around the pilings beneath the railings; The view across the bay was quite picturesque as several parasailboarders were still getting air time as the sun was setting on the horizon. It should be mentioned here that the Inlet Cafe sustained serious damage due to the storm; it was virtually rebuilt, including the seawall and short boardwalk fronting the bay. The new construction is awesome as no expense was spared to maintain the comfort of guests to the Inlet Cafe. Within no time at all, our lobster's eyes were beeping! We walked (briskly) over to the Manager's podium at which time we were shown to an outside table with a great view! Our server appeared post haste, introduced himself, got us fresh drinks, and dropped off menus. It must be noted here that staffing was more than adequate with management orchestrating the ballet of clean-up, table set-up, service, and anything needed for the satisfaction of guests; quite impressive considering how busy the outside deck was as well as the inside bar area with bi-fold doors open to the deck. After we were seated, a bread basket and coleslaw were placed on our table. Both were very tasty. We then ordered our main course and, in no time, our dishes appeared! Picture perfect. Her's: Salmon steak; mine: Tuna steak; both grilled to perfection with wild rice and other veggies and a dark sauce reduction that complemented our fish! I must say that my tuna was easily over an inch in thickness and substantial. Her's was approx. the same thickness with the portion sufficient for two. (She took a doggy bag home.) Our server did not rush us and the wait staff were seamless in their movements around our table. Our food was, indeed, delicious, and exceeded all expectations! We were more than satisfied with our dinner and declined dessert as we prepared for our ride home on the GSP. Amazingly, our valet managed to extradite our car and present it in front of us in less than 4 minutes; he earned his tip. We WILL be back to the Inlet Cafe which is HIGHLY recommended! I have been going to inlet cafe for years . AlwYs enjoyed .went there last Friday . Found out there are new owners .. ordered wine that I specifically asked for the brand I like that I always ordered the waitress didn't say they didn't have .. she comes out gives me my wine. It's not the wine I asked for so she say oh no we don't have that this is better !! Ah no .. than I order clams I say can you steam them she says yes but we only have middlenecks ok that's fine I order a dozen she comes back with steamers which I hate.. so I ask why and she says oh they don't steam the others !!! Also the whole menu is mostly sushi right now so my brother order sushi and my husband orders a burger .. the burger comes out we ask where's the sushi and we are told oh it going to be at least another 15 minutes !! So we get the bill pay and go across the way to proving ground and my brother see the manager / owner . We paid and are gone so he wasn't looking for anything.
