I got my car inspected and was told I needed new rear brakes. The independent shop quoted me $750 for rear pads and rotors which was absurd. I called a few other local independent shops that quoted $550, a bit more reasonable. Then I decided to try instant car fix and was a little skeptical about the quality. I tried calling and messaging but they were unresponsive. I booked online but had questions about OEM-equivalent pads and rotors but no one answered their messaging system. The price was much more manageable and cost around $350. The mechanic came out same-day and was very nice. Did all the work right in our driveway, showed us pictures and the old items to show that I truly did need the work done. He showed me the parts he was putting in which were of high quality. Car passed the re-inspection at the original shop and said the repair was done well. It was nice being in my own home while the work was done instead of being in the shop waiting room or coordinating a pickup and dropoff. The mechanic was quick and efficient. And best of all, it was much cheaper than going to a shop. Only complaint is the poor communication beforehand and the long time window to wait. When I was finally able to get the mechanic out, he realized a screw was threaded and needed to be replaced. The company wanted to charge me $200 for a less than $10 screw. I refused. The company ordered the screwed and offered to come out the following week. I said I can't do that due to being on military leave for a couple weeks and will be out of town. I was able to come to an agreement with Matthew and his supervisor Isaac that I will call once I was back in town, the screw will be ordered, and the mechanic will come back to finish the job at no extra charge. I have been calling for weeks to get the follow up job scheduled. I get told I have to talk to the "supervisor" or management then get forward to a voicemail with no call back. I have tried to speak directly to Isaac and continuously get the run-around. My car has been sitting for months unable to run. All I needed was to have my brakes bled...I had to help him by pumping the brakes while he went under to bleed the front lines. I don't think he even did anything... He didn't have anything to drain the lines into like a pan... which i thought was very suspicious. He said the air is in the back brake lines. He then told me that he couldn't do the back ones because he would have to take off the tires and he couldn't do it... why he couldn't take off the tires and do it is beyond me. The clutch on my A/C compressor failed, so I booked an appointment with Instant Car Fix to replace it, evacuate the system, and recharge it. I informed them ahead of time that the system was fully charged with no leaks. The first technician showed up on time but didn't speak English well enough to communicate effectively. Worse, he didn't have a vacuum pump or even the proper hose to do the job--so he left, and I requested a refund. A supervisor called later and promised a second mechanic would come that afternoon, fully equipped. That mechanic showed up but said he didn't have time and would return the next day. The mechanic failed to show up for the $190 pre-purchase inspection I ordered for Tuesday. That was on the mechanic -- but the follow up from ICF is what really steamed me. They didn't let me know that the mechanic had failed to show until I contacted them on Wednesday morning after seeing no report on the website (after I had been promised it would be posted by 5 pm on Tuesday). They promised to call me back when it was rescheduled. They didn't. So I called them Wednesday afternoon after not hearing from them to see if we could redirect the inspection to another car -- no problem, they said. We'll get on it. But no confirmation and Thursday morning they text me that the mechanic will be there between 11-3. Where? The original car? The new car? They didn't say. So I spent a morning trying to contact them. Again, "we'll call you back." No response until an EOD call (7:29 pm) to ask what I felt about the service. For what? I had no report. I gave them an ear full. I feel for any mechanic that signs up with this service. They have fouled up communications so poorly and that's the value that they're supposed to be providing me (the customer) and the mechanic (the vendor). If you can't be a good go-between, then get out of business. If you're a mechanic considering taking on business from ICF or a customer considering using ICF for a PPI, don't. Run.
