Recently visited ippudo with some friends for dinner. We had to wait a bit to get seated - the hostess was a bit short with us maybe because she was busy. The atmosphere in here was pretty lovely as it was quite busy with a lot of people enjoying a meal. It's not a huge space. As for the food, we ordered a bunch of appetizers to share including the takoyaki, truffle potatoes, karaage and a cold duck dish. The takoyaki was pretty standard, nothing special. The potatoes were actually quite good and worked well with the truffle flavor. The karaage was also pretty good, it was juicy and had a good sauce. The duck was VERY rare - way more rare than duck is typically. I had it anyway but I should have skipped it because I had a really bad stomach ache the next day and the people I ate with did too. Having not had ramen in a minute, this hit the spot! The place was quite roomy, with bathrooms a long trek downstairs. The service was cool, with waiters welcoming every party in. I do wish it was better when we needed to flag someone to order and pay though. The Akamaru Shinaji ($20) was like your typical tonkatsu broth, but the flavor quality is apparent here. The thin noodle texture was perfect, and the juicy soft pork pieces was everything I could ask for in a tonkatsu. The smokey garlic sauce and the spicy kick also gave this bowl so much umami. Although, if the broth is going to be salty, the extreme saltiness from the bamboo shoots do not balance out. For this reason, I recommend the light creamy Shiromaru Motoaji ($18) more, which was essentially the same thing but without the extra salty condiments so you can truly enjoy every ingredient. My friend's Potaru Miso Ramen ($22) was what I imagine ramen should be for a more balanced meal. It came with veggies like spinach and corn. I personally wasn't a fan of the beadiness of the spiced ball that transferred into the broth. Ramen, to me, is noodles dunked in overly salty broth with 2 pieces of meat, take it or leave it. But, the broth is key, and Ippudo really nailed that in the head here. The high sodium intake never sits well with me, so I'm good with ramen for another year. Had the infamous pork buns which didn't disappoint but the highlight was their MAZE MEN RAOH which is their dry noodles with sauce. Not your traditional ramen but it was tasty and delicious. All the ramen looks visually great, would be nice for more toppings but unfortunately that all comes with a price. The potara miso ramen is strong in flavor with the hearty pork miso broth and spiced minced meat. The wide thick noodles went well with the dish. The chasu wasn't fatty but not the worst I've ever had. Wouldn't recommend for non-spicy eaters as the spice does build a bit. Tasting a bit of the classics Shiromaru Motoaji and Akamaru Shinaji, old is gold. They were cleaner in taste and lighter in flavor in comparison to potara but were solid on their own. If you're looking for some good Ramen, this is the place. The decor and lighting in here is great. One thing I really like is that we came close to closing time and it was still packed with people. The quality did not diminish at all. We got a few appetizers and two ramens. Most of the broth is pork, but they also have a vegetarian section. The nirvana in the vegetarian section was delicious. If you combine that with some chicken, then you have a great dish on your hands. The service was really good as well as they constantly checked on us and made sure we are well taken care of. Used to be my favorite ramen ever but, after their menu change, it's incredibly disappointing. Their vegetarian ramen used to be amazing but they've completely changed all of their vegetarian ramen for the worse. Now, the broth has soy milk, making it taste very milk-y, and overall doesn't have the flavor or depth it used to have. The Nirvana Classic was actively not good and I probably won't come here again. To be honest it became the worst ramen in NYC sadly. Ippudo was better years ago. We've tried a few location in years and every time we regret that we ended up coming here for ramen. It's always convenient for us in the city for a couple of location. However, their soup wasn't right in flavor and overly salty, not hot enough, definitely not authentic Japanese ramens standards. Besides soup was only half in each bowl this time and noodle potion was very poor as well - Price isn't worth it. My foodie partner was agreed and he was very disappointed by this quality unfortunately. There's many better restaurants for ramen out there in the cities. I was in town for the week with some friends and we decided to check out this ramen shop. Wasn't sure how long the line was going to be with it being so popular. Luckily the wait was only about 2 hours before we were called. Before I start talking about the food, I want to give a major shout out to the host. The music playlist for the restaurant was amazing! My friend and I could not stop talking about it. Back to the food now, my friend and I both ordered the pork bun and I have to say, it was incredible! I would literally come back here just for it. I saw reviews everywhere about how the pork bun was delicious and it lived up to the hype. My only regret was I didn't order more. The ramen I got was akamaru shinaji w/ hakata thin noodles. It doesn't come with an egg so you have to order it as an extra which I did. First thing I did when I got my ramen was taste the broth. It was so good! I was very excited to try Ippudo on my recent trip to NYC as so many friends recommended this place and it has 10K+ reviews on Yelp, however, the place was tad bit disappointing! They did not have any vegan Ramen options (there are vegetarian options, their noodles have egg). We tried the Nirvana Karaka Ramen which was again, not that flattering! Our server however was sweet and he got in the ramen broth and all the ingredients separately so that my friend who doesn't eat egg noodles could mix the broth and veggies with steamed rice. We also tried Veggie buns and they were very tasty. It had fried mushrooms which was very crispy. We also tried a sparkling Sake and Suntory Old Fashioned and both the drinks were good and complimented with the food. I've had better Ramen before so this place didn't really impress me that much, I'm assuming their non-vegetarian options are better and hence people pick this place as their go-to Ramen spot. Full disclosure: Ramen restaurants that don't include a soft-boiled egg in their standard ramen irk me. To me, a perfectly cooked egg is almost as vital to the composition of a good bowl of ramen as the broth itself, and to upcharge $3 for one is borderline criminal. My suggestion to Ippudo? Hold the bamboo shoots and pop an egg in there. Ok, now let me get off my soap box. For years, I'd heard about the famous Ippudo, and had actually walked by the Astor Place location a million times without realizing what it was. Because there are so many amazing ramen shops in NYC, I'd never made a special attempt to visit. My friends and I visited for indoor dining during COVID, and I gotta say, it really didn't live up to its hype. We had the pork buns, which were just okay in terms of flavor and tenderness of the meat. The ramen was also not that special. I had the classic tonkotsu, and found the broth to be a little boring. The noodles were deliciously chewy and the chashu was tender, but the dish as a whole was a bit uninspired. We also ordered a bottle of sake ($50) which was a nice accompaniment. I don't know that I would go out of my way for a return visit, especially since they do not accept reservations. But for an inexpensive meal of famous ramen, it may be worth a visit. read more

I am pretty sure it is worth the hype. I tried the spicy cucumber salad and the spicy gyoza. Both decent but probably wouldn't order again. Gyoza filling is quite bland but the sauce makes up for it. Cucumber salad is tiny. I have had the Karaka Spicy, Akumara Shinaji, and Potara Miso. I believe the miso was my favorite, but I tend to prefer miso ramens. The broth of all three is delicious and rich. The spicy is really not what I would consider spicy at all. The ground pork mixture is heavily flavorful. On my first visit, I did not mix the pork mixture into my broth, and at the end I found the concentration of flavor to be too intense. I recommend mixing the ground pork into the broth when you first get it for a flavorful but well balanced soup. The chashu here is nothing special, just fine. The egg is perfect. The noodles were chewy, especially the curly noodles in the miso ramen. The butter provides an additional unctuous layer of luxury. For this reason I would recommend the miso ahead of the other two, but all are fantastic. There's a reason anyone who knows ramen in NYC has eaten here. read more

After a trip to get groceries we stumbled upon this ramen place (or it popped up when we searched for food in the area), and I had been craving ramen so we decided to go, not knowing about it's popularity. The restaurant itself is very nice, dark ambient lighting and large wood tables. The server sat us (me and my friend) across from another two people at a large round table, which I felt was slightly awkward. The server was very nice and gave me a box for me to put my bag in, so I didn't have to put it on the ground. We both ordered the first item on the menu's ramen section, the Shiromaru Classic. When I go to ramen places (and most specialized restaurants in general) I like to get the "classic" to try the dish they are known for/best at. When I ordered it, the server said that the second option, Akamaru modern, is much more flavorful. I stayed with my initial choice, thinking if its the classic it still must taste pretty good right? The broth was very light and tasted natural, definitely not overly salty like many of the other ramen bowls I've had. However, the ramen was otherwise not impressive. The amount of broth and noodles was very small. The only toppings on the ramen were chashu (pork), bamboo shoots, a fish cake, and scallions. It didn't include the wood ear mushrooms that seem to appear in most pictures of their ramen I've seen on the internet. The chashu was paper thin and not flavorful. You know how sometimes you finish up a meal and you think to yourself "I need to call my mom and tell her about this?" This is THAT kind of place. I thought, okay it's ramen how good could it be? And then... I was just simply blown away. I love a dish that takes some time to mindfully enjoy (instead of the meal being over in, say 10 minutes), which is exactly what ramen requires of the eater. Everything about decorating the bowl with the side of treasures (a nice add on, though perhaps not entirely necessary for everyone), and having what has to be the best off perhaps of my life. The second was a lotus sandwich, which had a good flavor profile, but it was not cooked enough. For ramen, I ordered the Shiromaru classic. The broth was good, light and flavorful, but the noodles were slightly under cooked and too thin for my liking. I also got only two small salty pieces of pork. My partner ordered a fish broth ramen, which they enjoyed but was oily. The service was great, and they replenished our water often. The food took a while but it was a Friday night. We always enjoyed sitting in front of the chef who was a favorite of ours but now the staff is all immigrants that dont speak any English. Which is fine but we loved that conversation we had with a particular chef that is no longer there and the people that work in the kitchen can't have a conversation with you anymore. The waitstaff and host are rude and the prices are thru the roof for food that just isn't as good. Also, for a $20 minimum bowl of ramen, you'd expect each bowl to come with half an egg at least. Nope, just a shallow bowl of stiff noodle, a dollop of sauce, some gamey broth, 7 bamboo shoot strands, and two wafer thin slices of gamey pork. I'm not exaggerating the pork thickness: they were thinner than a slice of crispy breakfast bacon. Again. $20. I get that it's New York, but really? Also, step up your portion sizes. Maruchan ramen packets at the local 7-11 give as much bang for your buck. The ambience was dim and intimate, but the music choice was questionable. You'd expect maybe some Japanese music rather than dubstep. Not a big deal though, just a thought that went through my mind. We needed a few more minutes to look at the menu since it was our first time, and the one dude got impatient, rolled their eyes, and sighed like we spilled wine on his carpet or something. Not saying we needed a tour of the menu, but a simple "May I recommend this" or "May I answer any questions for you" would've been helpful. Second server was nice. Yum yum yum! Came for lunch during the week and it was pretty busy! There is some communal seating, so be warned in case that's not something that makes sense for your group - you may be sitting side by side! It was just two of us so we were seated side but side but for us it was totally fine and didn't feel like we were too close to anyone else. We started with the takayaki which is a BIG portion for an app. They were delicious but served way too hot to eat - we had to wait quite a bit. For ramen we ordered Karaka Spicy Ramen. I meant to ask them to leave the spicy part on the side, but forgot. Luckily, it was all bunched at the top so I was able to scoop it off and stir some back in to make sure the spice level was tolerable. One thing to note though is not all seating is at separate tables, since they have some long tables and bar type seating where multiple parties are placed together. There was a couple sitting across the table from us, which I was okay with, but I know for some this might not be ideal during Covid times. They do, however, have separate booths and tables that I'm sure you can request if you want. Food: -Pork belly bun: I saw so many reviews for these, so I had to try them. They were so good! I highly recommend getting them since everything about it was perfect. The buns were nice and soft, the meat was so juicy and flavorful, the lettuce added a nice crunch, and the mayo/aioli on top was the exact amount and flavor to tie it all together. I will definitely be getting these again when I come back -Akamaru Kasane ramen: Delicious ramen for a nice cold day. My favorite part was the garlic oil that added so much flavor to the dish. The pork broth was also delicious and rich in flavor, and the spicy paste they added mixed well to add a hint of spice without it overpowering the entire broth. Pork buns - 4/5 good taste but the bun's texture could've been a bit better. Spicy Ramen - 2/5 the broth was good when I took my first sip but there was a noticeable bad aftertaste that stays in your mouth and throat. I'm not sure what it is and it absolutely ruins the bowl. The flavor was also pretty bland for it being supposedly spicy. Spicy tuna sushi rolls - 3/5 they tried to be trendy by putting the actual fish poke style on top of veg rolls.
