Made a reservation a few weeks before and I had no idea how busy this small ramen restaurant on Clinton St. could get! People were coming in and out, and after dining here I realize it's because they have a tight-knit table duration policy, which ranges from an hour-1.5hrs depending on your party size. Our server was nice and attended to us quickly. I appreciated how often they filled our glasses, but noticed how quickly they did want us out the door. We ordered the curry flower and karaage to start. I enjoyed the flavors of the curry flower, but felt like the karaage was lacking in texture. For our entrees we both ordered the Tonkotsu and really enjoyed how filling it was. I don't think it was warm enough, but I didn't hate it. Not the best ramen i've had, but I'm curious to try the Spicy Miso Ramen, as our server said it was her favorite. Before we were finished eating, our server asked to give us to go plates and wanted us OUT lol (idk if you've seen that tik tok where the server pranks the restaurant goer by clearing his plate while he was mid bite, lol that is what eating here reminded me. One of the BEST ramen I've ever tried! Before you come at me, I'm referring to a fully vegetarian/vegan ramen - it's hard to come across a delicious, hearty, packed with flavor broth (unless you go straight to the motherland). We came here with a group of friends (shout out to our friend for bringing us here) and we sat in the quieter area to the back with the bench chairs. Loved this little room it's perfect for a cozy night with friends and definitely a lot quieter than the regular room. Of course, this place is pretty small to begin with but attention to detail, service and food flavors is what it's all about. We started things off with the spicy kyuri pickles which were absolutely delicious. The rice vinegar is what gave it that perfect amount of punch without making you feel like you were eating salt and vinegar chips (which I LOVE). Spice level wasn't too spicy for me but it does have a kick. Me and my husband ordered different ramens so we could try the different flavors and I'm SO glad we did. The veggie spicy miso red chili is what stole my heart and lives rent free in my taste buds (they too have a memory hehe). I think that dish was perfectly balanced without being overpowering or too spicy. The biggest amount of spice does sit at the bottom of the bowl and as I was siping my last bits of broth away that's when I noticed my pleasant little wake up call - which again for me it wasn't that spicy since I have a pretty high tolerance. IT WAS SO SO SO SO SO DELICOUS! Hubby's ramen was out of this world in its own way. He ordered the truffled vegan shoyu and WOW. It was one of those broths that can stand alone and make your taste buds dance and go crazy. It was absolutely incredible and one slurp lead to the next. Both of the ramen dishes were incredible - I personally don't eat eggs but even the eggs were beautiful. Absolutely love this place and can't wait to go back. I was unimpressed. I've learned more about the NYC noodle scene since, including some TV/YouTube features about Ivan's personal story about a ramen obsessive. With that story in mind, I enjoyed my tonkotsu ramen ($20) with a tomato ($3) added. I prefer bone broths over simple shio, and indeed the whole bowl was harmonious. We were walking down the street and the incredible umami smell of ramen wafted our noses so we decided on Ivan Ramen! Here's how it went. Atmosphere/Appearance: This place may look a little small, but there's a lot of space in here in separate compartments. It was SUPER busy so we did have to wait a little bit, but it wasn't too bad. It was nice outside so we actually went IN to the restaurant then out like, a side door to another outdoor section that was so beautifully setup. It was quieter outside (naturally) and just felt nice to eat outdoors, but not be sitting right next to the street. Service: I can't remember who took care of us, but I don't remember having any issues at all. Food: We started off with their Wagyu Pastrami Buns which is a concoction of house-made pastrami, sauerkraut and japanese-russian dressing. These were delightful! Rich, meaty, creamy and a lil' crunchy due to the sauerkraut. Well-executed. We then tried Ivan's Karaage which is crispy fried chicken, lemon, and choice of sauce: yuzu-kosho mayo, black garlic honey, shiso buttermilk, or yuzu-chili sauce. Of course we went with the yuzu-kosho and this too was delightful! Crispy, crunchy, tender chicken that was rich in flavor! For my ramen/bowl entree I decided on the Triple Pork Triple Garlic which is a less soup-y style of ramen made with a tonkotsu broth, shoyu-braised pork chashu in two ways. My goodness this was off the chain! Hot, tender pork, rich, salty broth and excellent balance with textures. Well-done. Value: It's New York City. I mean, you know the deal. Each of our appetizers were $14.00 and my ramen was $20.00. Not bad at all to be completely honest. That's extremely reasonable and worth every penny! Came here on a Sunday night and it was packed. Ordered the curry cauliflower, Japanese fried eggplant, Tsukemen, soy garlic fried chicken (not the karage). The tsukemen was 4.5/5 for me, broth was rich, flavorful, very smooth mouthfeel when dipped with noodles. I was so excited to try the different dishes here and they did not disappoint! The restaurant serves Japanese food and it seems to also have some Jewish influence as well which brings forth new and unique flavors in my opinion. I came with my partner and while we definitely ate with our eyes more than our stomachs could handle, we enjoyed our meal thoroughly. 1. SEASONAL SQUASH WITH STRACCIATELLA This wasn't my favorite but I did enjoy the sauce with the squash. It seemed to have some sort of wasabi flavor in it. 2. CRISPY EGGPLANT This was so fun and tasty! I loved the crispiness of the eggplants paired with the sauce. The sauce was pretty addicting too in my opinion. The eggplants were nicely seasoned as well and I almost wish I got some to go. 3. MAGURO BUTSU This reminded me of ceviches and was enjoyable. I don't think I needed to get it but I was happy to try it. It was nice with the seaweed crisp however the crisps are rather large and so it's hard to eat them together in a clean manner. 4. SCHMALTZ-FRIED GYOZA I was interested in these as I've never heard of such gyozas and I thought they were soupy which was a nice surprise! They felt like tasty small surprises and I loved how much flavor it packed. 5. WAGYU PASTRAMI BUNS Its flavor reminded me of McDonalds but in a good way! It was quite tasty. I thought this was a smart idea to use buns for. 6. TONKOTSU TSUKEMEN I do love a good Tsukemen and I thought this was quite good. It was quite salty which is expected and it came with an anchovy sauce that you could add in if you wanted. I didn't think it was really necessary but try a drop or two before adding in more. The pork katsu was nicely cooked and so tender. Since it's a salty dish, I think it would've been nice to have also ordered a drink! 7. "JIRO"-STYLE TONKOTSU Like the description mentions, this ramen was very garlic forward and had a lot of small bits in the bowl. I think having all those bits makes it a bit cumbersome to have to chew through although it was good. With noodles I like to be able to slurp them and taste the broth on its own, but it was so packed with bits and pieces of many ingredients that it sort of got in the way. 8. YUZU CHEESECAKE This was my favorite dessert here! What a great way to end a delicious meal! The yuzu was punchy but so addicting. 9. YUZU KAKIGORI If you think you are going to finish this on your own, you may want to reconsider. You will be presented with this large talk bowl of shaved ice and in the center and in the bowl, is all of the yuzu extract. It's like hidden treasure! Really cute ambiance and decor obviously but it gets really loud. The girls next to us were having a conversation they felt comfortable with having in public but I didn't really want to be privy too haha but can't close my ears. My friend and I had a reservation for 8:30PM on a Saturday but were early so we walked in. They couldn't seat us but I think they treated us as a walk in and there happened to be counter space. The service felt mixed - it was busy and they were sweet but not as attentive. We got the pickles which were pretty good - super vinegary with a little kick. My friend got the vegetarian option that came with a soy broth and tons of mushrooms and also a random tomato. She did need to jazz it up with a bit and they brought us their house spicy sauce which she said helped. My review is not bases on the food but my experience at the restaurant. We bad such a terrible experience here. We didn't even get a chance to eat. We had come as a group of 8 and we were told that for 8 people they only do a prix fixe menu. It would cost $60/person and includes 1 ramen per person and 5 shared appetizers for the group. We're all vegetarian and they didn't even have 5 veggie appetizers so they would repeat one of them. When we did the math, it didn't made sense. On the menu, it's $20 for ramen and each appetizer was less than $20. So if we all got a ramen and shared 5 appetizers our total would have been much lower than being charged $60/person plus tax and tip. We asked if it would be possible to do 2 groups of 4 and not get the prix fixe menu and the hostess said that's fine. But even though there were tables next to each other, she said she would split us and we couldn't sit together. The hostess was very rude and kept giving attitude even when we first came in. I was surprised to see the lower rating for this place given the acclaim but now that I've been there, I get it . The restaurant was pretty busy for a Monday night but I got a seat at the bar. It's a pretty decent sized restaurant for NY and has a modern feel with the manga art across the walls. The waitstaff is really friendly and quick with their service. I ordered the shawarma gyoza, the maguro, and the shoyu ramen. The maguro came first. It has a nice balance of citrus, salt and a little sweetness. I wished it had more of a spice but otherwise not bad. The crackers held up well to the fish and there was a nice balance between fish and cracker. The gyoza came next and the description was spot on. It was like eating chicken rice from a cart but in a gyoza wrapper. Pretty tasty. The ramen came next and unfortunately it was a disappointment. Maybe I should have ordered one of their more unique noodle dishes but given how I read Ivan had studied authentic ramen, I wanted to try something traditional. The broth tasted a little like udon broth and not really very flavorful. I was pretty disappointed. The noodles were slightly over cooked as well. For a place that prides itself on ramen, this was not great. The egg was cooked well and the pork was delicious. Ivan Ramen wasn't on my radar at all before our New York City trip, but when I learned how acclaimed the place is, I found myself becoming very excited about our visit. We showed up at around 6:00 on a Thursday and the place was already quite busy. We snagged a couple of spots at the bar, and even though we weren't planning on getting an appetizer, we certainly couldn't say no to the special: the "Lamb Shawarma" Gyoza ("Shwarma-seasoned lamb gyoza, "red sauce", "white sauce", shredded lettuce, cilantro and tomatoes"). It's amazing. We ate a lot of terrific stuff on our trip but this ranks very close to the top. It really did remind me of a shawarma, but a shawarma that's been elevated to incredible levels. Everything just worked so well together. For my main, I went with the Spicy Red Chili ramen ("dashi + chicken broth, red chili tare, shoyu-braised pork chashu, smashed egg, yu choy"). Though perhaps not quite as exquisite as that appetizer, I heartily enjoyed this ramen. At first I thought maybe there was nothing going on but heat, and yeah it's extremely hot, but the more I ate the more flavors began coming to the forefront. It doesn't hurt, either, that all the other components work really well and also elevate it. (Our server congratulated me after I finished, so I guess perhaps it's just a tad too hot for most people.) I also tried their house beer and it was great.
