I was so thrilled to find that they have three different vegetarian ramen options! I went with the wasabi shoyu, because I'm a sucker for thick wavy noodles, and the other two veggie options came with the thin noodles. It was good, but I would try one of the other ones next time. The broth had a pleasant wasabi flavor, but I prefer a richer, creamier broth. It came topped with tempura flakes, which looked super cute (almost like Rice Krispies), but they got soggy within about 90 seconds, so I could have done without them. You're paying $16 for a bowl and if you want any add-ons, that'll cost you some more. The service is superb. The waiters are constantly re-filling your water and the service is fast...extremely fast. You pretty much get your food within minutes of ordering. They want to get as many people in the door as possible since there always seems to be a wait. For starters, we had to get an order of the pork buns. While they were pretty good, it's pricey! I liked how there was a piece of lettuce in the bun to give it an added crunch. For my ramen, I got an order of the akamaru modern ramen and added a boiled egg. While the ramen noodles were cooked al dente, I thought the broth was alright. The egg was lackluster and I didn't like how the egg came cut in two. I like to break open my egg to have the yolk just ooze out! The chashu wasn't that tender and wasn't that flavorful. I'm sad. I had higher expectations for Ippudo given that when people think of ramen in NYC, it's usually Ippudo vs Momofuku. We ordered 2 orders of Hirata pork buns, Karaka-men, Akamaru Modern, and the Shiromarun Hakata Classic. The pork buns are tasty - fluffy soft buns with flavorful pork. However, the pork belly was not as tender as I would expect, especially considering that they are 2 pork buns for 9$. Expensive. The ramen is good, but nothing amazing. As many of the reviews said, the Akamaru Modern tastes better than the other ones. The final bill was around 80$ for 3 people, so this is a pretty pricy place for ramen. read more

I've heard about Ippudo and its notorious wait times for years so on a random afternoon I finally got to try it with no wait time! I've got to say this is one of the best ramen broths I've ever had. It has a very rich yet clean feel, and I didn't feel greasy after eating it (in contrast to many other ramen places). It felt like a healthier broth as well. The noodles they gave were the thin ones that I don't like as much but didn't have complaints about them. The environment of the restaurant is chic and cool. The meat itself was on the tougher side, and was not the melt in your mouth pork slice I expect at high end ramen restaurants. I expected more from ippudo. I had dined in here before and had a great experience. Servers were prompt, food was delicious. Decided to take a chance on take out and was very disappointed. I went into the restaurant and they told me my order would be ready soon. About 15/20 minutes goes by and one of hosts goes whoops sorry here's your order (it was sitting out in plain sight all along). Fine whatever we all make mistakes. I go home, excited for the ramen and this is what I see. Very disappointing for a place some people claim to be one of the best ramen spots in the city. This is a great date spot for ramen. I had the Ichiraku which is unique because it is a chicken broth. The broth was appropriately salted and tasted like it had a slight miso flavor mixed in. The noodles were straight which I'm not as used to at a ramen spot but that did not stop me from finishing the entire bowl. The waiters were very prompt and the food was delivered quickly. We came around 2pm on a Sunday and only waited about 15 minutes for a table. The bathrooms were really clean and nice. I would definitely return to try more of their menu. read more

It's the perfect date-night environment; nice evening lighting, sleek furniture and design makes you feel like you're at an upscale restaurant without the upscale price tag! Do be warned though that you will not be seated until your entire party is present, as this is a strictly enforced rule. I typically get the Karaka Spicy Ramen (add tofu and an egg), and it never disappoints! Such a comforting bowl of ramen. The lychee martini is delicious, as well! The service is always stellar. Some of you may know that I've had a tendency to knock on ramen restaurants in the US. I've been forever scarred from eating ramen in Japan during my teenage years. Cursed to never being satisfied from the ramen here after having ordering it from a vending machine back in Shinjuku. (Yes, it was that good!) That is, until today. Ippudo is one of NYC's most popular ramen hotspots and for good reason too! This is ramen perfected to the highest tee and is probably the closest you can get to ramen to in Japan. The Akamaru Modern Ramen is a bolder take on their classic tonkotsu Shiromaru Hakata Classic. It comes with their original pork bone broth, pork chashu, cabbage, mushrooms, scallions, garlic oil and is topped off with their special secret weapon--Umami Dama miso paste. The result is rich, hearty and even almost soulful, as each bite takes you a little closer to ramen heaven. The chashu pork is tender and thin with the perfect meat to fat ratio. The noodles are a tad thin as I would've preferred curlier, thicker noodles but the overall bowl was so delicious that it didn't matter much. The Pork Ippudo Buns are a must-have! Thick slices of fatty, tender pork belly sandwiched between a slightly-sweet, pillow soft white bun, cabbage and a sweet and spicy sauce. The rest of the party looked to me to steer them in the right direction and, to a man (and woman), were all very satisfied. Even got the noodles firm (though they call it hard) to make sure they appreciated. The order started with their edamame, which came with a yuzo citrus salt (nice touch). I had their Brooklyn Kaedama Ale, which had a secret recipe (though I think the secret is ginseng?). This one I've wanted to visit for years, but the lack of reservations and wait time always made it difficult. This past weekend though, we planned. Plan to get there early and expect at least and hour and half wait or so at dinner times - it's worth it! The service was very good - staff were all friendly, food came out quickly. I was very excited to bring along a few friends to try Japanese ramen for their first time since I love Ippudo. I'll be very honest, the only ramen I've tried so far at Ippudo is the Akamaru modern ramen because I never want to try something else in case I regret it. However, I've always been visiting their Westside franchise, so coming here was a new experience for me as well. Let's just say, it prefer Ippudo Westside more. I ordered the Akamaru modern once again and told my friends to get it because it won't disappoint. Sadly, it did. It was very salty compared to what I remembered from Westside, and I've had it there a few times. My friends all thought it was salty. The broth was flavorful, maybe a little too overpowering. Nonetheless, I give it 3 stars because it was still very delicious. However, I still prefer Westside for the flavor, seating atmosphere, and wait time. YOU MUST EAT HERE! If you've never been here you might have some trouble finding the place as the signs outside are in Japanese, nothing says "Ippudo" using the alphabet that a lot of us know and learned to love. Service is quick and efficient. I arrived alone and waited about 2 minutes for them to give me a seat, didn't actually have time to wait drinking a beer at the bar. Coming in, as the asian-looking woman asks me to follow her and we walk through a narrow dark hallway into the dining area, she stops at the end of the hallway, where I could see the others diners and she proceeded to yell a long phrase in Japanese that I didn't understand, but sure hope she meant well for me... The rest of the staff replied with what I surmised was a sign of agreement. Add this to a decor of black walls, bamboo ornaments, white and red flags and kanji's writing all over... It just makes the experience whole! The menu is not extensive and that's acceptable for a first timer. Since the lady seating in the same table in front of me (Which I didn't know but we ended up sharing the table with 4 other couples) was eating some sort of buns, I asked for the Ippudo Buns with vegetables ($9 USD for 2 buns). The dough is delicious and the fried vegetables patty inside is so tasty that you can't taste what vegetables they used or if they mistakenly gave you pork. Since I'm a recovering carnivore-holic, tasting these 2 slices of pork made the best of the soup for me! To add to the experience, an imported Asahi dry beer ($8) had to be had. For the main course I asked for advice since noodles are not my favorite food... This is because they are (in my opinion) a bunch of pasta with lots of flavored water... At least that's what I've had until today. I ate in Japan noodles deemed to be the best in Japan by some people from the country and left completely unsurprised. When asked to the lady for the most ordered noodles she pointed to the Akamaru Modern ($15) but when she asked me if I could eat spicy (My Mexican mustache must have given me) and I nodded, she recommended the Karaka-Men ($16). She offered to add an egg for $2 USD. Since the egg (according to her) didn't alter the flavor much, I decided to go with it and it was a great decision! I had the vegetarian ramen with miso broth and it was really good. I also added to my order some chicken wings and a couple tempura vegetable bao buns. I was beyond stuffed when I was done. The reason why I took out a star, it's because everything was over salted. Yes, they balance everything perfectly and at first it all tastes great and tasty, but after a bit you discover that salt is behind this umami experience. As far as I know, umami doesn't make you thirsty. And this was throughout the meal, buns and wings included, so I am not blaming the miso. My girlfriend and I put our name down at 6:25pm. They ask you for your name and phone number. We were told wait time was between and hour and and hour and a half, but we decided to wait it out. We walked around the block and came back to stand at the bar when it was less crowded. We ordered an old fashioned ($14) and a Pinot Noir ($9). The old fashioned was good but quite sweet. I didn't quite like the small pieces of ice. The draft beer (Kirin) was ($7). We waited about an hour in total and we were finally seated at the bar in front of the open kitchen in the dining area. We were quickly given water and we decided to start with the Shishito Peppers and the special being the Washugyu Poutine. Both were really superb and brought out very quickly. The Pountine was rich and flavorful. The shishito peppers were cooked/deep fried to perfection and the citrus salt is such an amazing complement. The Shin Tantan-men was super spicy but really good-a strong cilantro flavor and small pieces of ground meat throughout. Definitely a very strong flavor. The Karaka Spicy has two nice pieces of pork and an even but captivating flavor. It was such a pleasure to sit at the bar and watch the chefs prepare all of the dishes. Now this is ramen. The interior has an amazing ramen shop look, and the staff are all really into creating the environment fun and welcoming. I ate here by myself on a Monday night (was in NY for work), and it was still PACKED. Luckily they had a spot at the bar so I sat done fairly quickly. Food: Their steam buns were really delicious and quick to come out. I tried the pork and chicken. Best to share with a friend so you can try more than one flavor. This place deserves all of its reviews and stars! I went around 630p on a Friday, and there was a table to be seated immediately. Unfortunately, like most NY restaurants, you cannot be seated until your entire party arrives, but even around 7, most parties were quoted only a half an hour wait. Unless you have a big party, you will likely be seated at a big table with other parties, which makes it not ideal for date night but great other small parties to scope out what other items people are ordering. I ended up getting the karaka-men, their tonkatsu ramen with a ball of spice on top, and I added the soft boiled egg as well. The broth had layers of flavors, and you can even see some of the discrete flavors in the photo before you mix them together. The noodles were a bit thin for my liking, but paired well with the rest of the dish. We came here the Friday after the 4th of July around 7 pm. We figured it might not be so busy because everyone has fled the city and we were mostly right. It was still super packed and busy, but we waited maybe 10 minutes before being seated right in front of the area where the food was being prepared. It probably can't be helped because the staff shouts something new every few minutes, but it adds to the charm and is fun. We were starving so immediately ordered the pork buns. These buns were phenomenal. I've had a good many pork buns in my day, but these ones were absolute perfection. The mayo was perfect the the fatty sweet pork belly, the bun, perfectly soft and pliable. The pork itself was deliciously seasoned, the fatty parts melted in my mouth, and the more meaty parts were so hearty. I would go back just for these buns. I then ordered the Karaka spicy which came with a spice bomb and boyfriend ordered the Shiromaru classic. I liked my ramen a lot, it was well seasoned with an appropriate amount of spice that wasn't just spicy, but also salty and so savory. As much as I liked my dish, the Shiromaru classic was incredible and I wish I had ordered that. It was gingery, but not overpoweringly so.
