I've always gone to Ippys with my family for dinner. They pride themselves on suggesting a great steakhouse, and they always enjoy it. I went there for lunch, and it was okay. The service was excellent, but the food was average. It wasn't bad yet not extraordinary either. What's good about this place is its consistency. If you're in the area like I was, it's a good choice for lunch or dinner. Otherwise, I wouldn't travel from out of town to check it out. read more

Beware, this was the eighth time that my fiancé and I have been to the bar at Ippys this year. This night we had a drink and half of another, at some point during the evening someone must have slipped something into our drinks. We were sitting at the bar! We have lost hours of our time do not remember getting home woke up with excruciating headaches and our bodies were extremely sore! We called and spoke with the management at Ippys both in the restaurant and the bar. They were supposed to get back in contact with us in hopes that we could look at the video of the night to see exactly who did what to our drinks. But the management nor the owners have any interest in helping us get to the bottom of this situation! We have always really enjoyed having a drink or two there but please be aware, watch your drinks! Because of this incident we will never return to Ippys and I feel that is extremely unfortunate because we really enjoyed their establishment. P.S. We are both 49 years old! read more

I adore this place. The food never disappoints. The waitstaff is amazing. If you do your research, you'll find out that majority of them have been there for a long, long time. That means that they love their job and are treated fairly by management. All the food is fresh (as many purchased from Virginia vendors as possible) and many of the condiments are made fresh daily as well (salad dressings, cocktail sauce, etc.) What I love is that the owners care about the experiences of their customers. They want to develop relationships. From cheeseburgers to steak diane, they excel at both casual and elegant cuisine and are affordable for any budget. Have had three friends get sick after eating at Ippys. I have never been impressed by any of the food, home made is not true, sorry to say. Full bar with music. Update: The owner emailed me and called me a liar saying no one has ever been sick from eating there. She said to come over and see for myself. She said 90% of the food is home made. She said this review was false and that people depend on her for employment. I hope instead of lashing out she makes sure people are not sick again. I have been with them as they vomited all night and had toilet-related issues. It was not made up, they would not appreciate anyone saying having an entire weekend ruined and being super ill was made up. Too bad she didn't say I apologize if that happened and we do our best to make sure everyone has a wonderful meal, instead of saying it was false. But this is typical for this area. read more

All the salad dressings are supposedly homemade. I had the 1000 Island; it was sweet & good. The croutons in the salad were salty. For entree, I had the stuffed grouper. It wasnt really stuffed; it was more "open faced" w/ a thin crab cake layer on top. The grouper was tender and tasty; the crab meat had too much old bay seasoning for my taste. If you dont like Old Bay; get the grouper broiled. I choose a side of homemade onion rings. They served a big stack; perhaps 12 or so larger whole rings. Steaks were awesome, our server was great. This was the first time we have been there and we be back (nice ride from Moneta). Pleasantly surprised! Since Rocky Mount lacks any nice restaurants we usually drive in to Roanoke for a decent meal out. We decided to try Ippy's at the last minute on a friday night. Wow! No wait, seated immediately, a little dark and dated for decor but clean. Fantastic five cheese ravioli in pink sauce, rolls, and a salad for $11.99, seafood platter with huge perfectly cooked oysters, deviled crab, shrimp and grouper for $18.99, even the French fries were delicious. The waitress kept our drink glasses full without hovering, a busboy came through frequently making sure our table stayed clean. All in all we thought it was right up there with any Roanoke restaurant. Will go back to see if lightning strikes twice! read more

We are from out of state and heard about this restaurant and went for dinner. We had one of the best dinners we have had in a long time at a restaurant that has been family owned since 1919. My husband had the prime rib medium and said it was the best Prime Rib he has ever had. I had a wonderful steak. Both meals came with broiled shrimp, scampi style. Salads had homemade croutons and freshly prepared dressing. They serve homemade bread rolls and butter. Our server, Kay, has been working there 18 years and was professional and friendly. What a fun find this place is. We ate in the bar. I was a little worried about the smoking, but it was just fine. Really. We got the royal treatment by the delightful Jodie. She is one of the owners and the cook. I felt like I had known her for years. All of the customers were just as delightful. All were quite helpful in our food selection. We started with Oyster Rockefeller. Perfectly done. Not over cooked at all. Jodie also sent out some delicious shrimp and onion rings. Then on to a fillet and a sirloin strip. They were perfect to our specifications and were so much better than we assumed they would be. They make all of their own sauces and dressings. I am so happy to find this place. We have slim Pickens for good dinning in this area. Try it. You will like it. We met some great people (all so friendly). We will be there regularly now and hope to see you there also. read more

I don't frequent this restaurant often but I thought I would give it a try . As I remembered it is very pricey for the quality of food served . This still holds true today . Arrived on a Monday around 8:00 p.m.and was greeted by Mr. Personality , not !!! Requested rolls as the menu suggested which we cold Sister Schubert's finest . Ordered a hose salad with French dressing which arrived with some concoction of mayonnaise and something !Settled on Italian . Entree arrived which was a Ribeye and baked potato with sour cream and butter . Potato was so cold it wouldn't melt neither one. Steak was good at best considering I had to use some type of off brand A-1 substitute . Would I go back,no thank you . Is the a place I would recommend not hardly ! read more

The first time we stop there, the hostess was very rude to us because we didn't have a reservations so we left since she said there wasn't any room except in the bar but there were several tables empty that we could see so we made reservations and tried it again, Hostess was still rude but we were seated because we had a reservations. The service was very SLOW and they were not busy at all. Our reservations was for 6, we got there about 10 minutes early and didn't leave until like almost 8. The food is way over priced for what it is!! The green beans come from a can YUCK, the mushrooms on my husband's steak were out of can. I was really disappointed!! Horrible service. We had a large party which we booked a private room for. When you do this, you can only order from a limited menu which honestly isn't appealing AT ALL. So my son and I went to the bar to order our food to get something we'd actually eat. They wouldn't allow us to order there since we were with the party. We HAD to order from their limited menu. Needless to say, we stayed with our party but did not order a single thing. My youngest ordered a grilled cheese and my wife had grilled chicken. Our total was $36!!! PLUS they added auto-gratuities which I would not have left a dime. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service and a HUGE waste of money. What a wonderful restaurant! From the food to the service, Ippy's is top-notch. The food is clearly fresh and homemade, even the blue cheese dressing! I had the scallops with broiled green beans and could have licked the plate the meal was so well prepared. Our server, Jessica, was terrific - friendly, personable, knew the menu, and I will request her service if I am ever in Rocky Mount again. Jo Dee, the owner and chef, came out to talk with us which made the evening richer - she is genuine, wants happy customers and takes care to serve fresh, quality food. Her carrot cake is divine! Extremely unorganized and rude. We waited in line for 45 minutes and were told when we arrived to be seated in an angry voice that they did not have room to seat seven. No apologies for our wait or offers to split up into two tables. This was after a dance recital so we had waited in line outside with two young children and my 78 year old mother. They do not have any customer service skills so I am not even able to rate the food. Will NOT be returning and would not recommend to anyone. read more

Highly recommend from locals, but didn't live up to their reputation for our first experience. Service was slow for early evening time frame; seated 3 adults/2 children at 6pm, drinks 15min later, salad/appetizer around 6:30.... Then no entrees till 7:15pm, and even then the kids dinosaur chicken nuggets (which are apparently unhatched dinosaur eggs?) were late to the table. Unremarkable ambiance, odd mishmash of wooden tables and Wal-Mart discount seating. Server made two mistakes that were noted to her prior to the bill being presented but one remained on the tab and the other was not addressed. When reiterated to her she said she couldn't do anything about a discount and I had to talk to the manager. "I don't want or need a discount, nor do I want the manager; I prefer to have open dialogue with the individual charges with our service that my concerns are noted and you assure me it would be addressed to not happen again. That retains a customer, the recovery. In this you failed, sorry. Fried pickles we're ok, steak was ok, burger fell apart out of the bun and had to be eaten with a fork, and the $25 prime rib was sub par: too much pepper and liquid smoke hid the meat's flavor, and since it was presented on a pre-heated skillet-plate swimming in watered down au jus it was medium rare on top but a disappointing medium well/well done on the bottom. $90 just was not spent wisely here, unfortunately. read more

No appetizers, sides were also limited. 2 of our party were told that they could order from regular menu at the bar but couldn't bring back to room to eat with rest of party. Went in thinking a large steak with salad and mashed potatoes and a order of onion rings for appetizer, settled for shrimp, baked potato, and salad (or should I say a bowl of lettuce with 1 cucumber slice ). Not the greatest place to eat, the atmosphere is lacking and the service. Overpriced imo, but there are not a lot of offerings in this area so better to drive to Roanoke. Dec 1st it is no smoking in VA restaurants, as Ippy's is filled with smoke - you leave reeking of it.. I won't go to this place and waste my hard earned $$ again. I have eaten here for years. Last night we went there with another couple. Ordered shrimp cocktails, the waitress came out with one shrimp cocktail, and said "I dropped the other three in the floor cause I burned my hand, so I'm only gonna charge you for one." As if she was doing us a favor by not charging us for the food she dropped in the floor! When we asked her to replace what she dropped, she said they were out of shrimp. Two people ordered the shrimp alfredo. When it came out it didn't have any vegetables in it, we didn't say anything, just carried on eating. About 5 mins later a man came out and sat a small bowl of vegetables on the table, and said here you go, they forgot to put them in the pasta! My ceasar salad came and the dressing was on the side (whoever heard of that with a ceasar?) and the croutons were straight from a bag! In the past there were always homemade wonderful buttery croutons on the salad. It took over thirty minutes to get our food, and they weren't busy at all. Someone ordered a beer at the table next to us and was told they were out. This restaurant better get their act together. Many more of these episodes and customers will find somewhere else to go! read more

We went here based on recommendation by Bonnie from the hotel. She recommended their ribs. When we arrived, we were informed they were out of ribs! Our server, Jordan, was very nice and helpful in recommending other dishes. We ordered the steaks, which we were extremely pleased with. Unbeknownst to us, Jordan had informed the owner, Tommy, about our disappointment of no ribs. While waiting for our main meal, Tommy brought a sampling of both types of ribs to our table (on the house). He apologized for not having ribs and said this was all he had left and it was not a complete serving. Talk about service --- this was the greatest and the ribs were delicious. For the area, it is the best restaurant that Rocky Mount has to offer. I have never had anything there I absolutely did not like. I'm not real picky. I have had the roast beef on several occasions. Most of the time it is really good. Only once I can say it was a bit tough, but still good. I always liked the fish, onion soup and even the mashed potatoes are good. I have a friend that goes to Ippys just for the salads and she raves about the homemade croutons. The restaurant is classy, clean and quiet. The service is friendly and they try to please. If you like coffee, and want alcoholic.. try a Jody coffee. It is to die for! As for the bar, I dislike the smoke and rarely attend... but other than that it is okay. read more

Absolutely terrible. My family has been eating here for over 20 years. Recently, having been overseas for some time, we stopped by wanting a good Ippy's meal. Having heard it had changed we were nonetheless hopeful. We were extremely disappointed. From a restaurant of fresh cut steaks, charcoal grilled ribs, fresh roasted vegetables, etc. Ippy's has devolved into a retail outlet for Costco pre-frozen food. The prices haven't changed but the quality is surpassed by almost any other attempt at food preparation, including fast food. My family felt that our money would have been better spent at Cookout than this restaurant. Mostly consisting of frozen, reheated and soggy fried food, warmed up frozen bread, and bagged salad with factory made dressing in plastic cups, it is simply both horrible and theft of your money. In addition, my order was delivered exactly how I did not order it...things on my "steak" I asked to be left off, gobs of goo on my potato I asked for in the side...I'll stop here. In short, save yourself the ignominious experience of plastic, laminated, ink jet-printed menus, decor outdated when it was built, carpet that bears witness to a thousand clumsy waiters, and food not fit for the Soviet Army. Go to McDonalds instead. Yes, the food will be bad, but you'll have enough money left over for beer to wash it all away. read more

Ippy's is a nice place with good food and good service. We usually get the petit filet mignon and it is a nice cut of meat prepared wel. The service is above average in our view. It gets busy on weekends and when there are events at the Harvester Center so reservations are a good idea. They have both booths and tables for seating. read more

pretends to be slightly upscale, but really just casual with tablecloths. Good service, but decor a bit dated and worn out. Crab legs sadly served with Old Bay seasoning on it, so you are warned Steak is reasonably seasoned and tender. Menu a bit higher than the quality of the food, but OK if you do not mind spending 20%more than comparable restaurant fare. Nothing special about the american-style menu. One glaring note (other than the Old Bay, lol) is the terrible rice. Rice is cheap, so why use the pricier parboiled worse-than-wax-chips rice they use in some dishes. Do not order any dish with this hideously bad rice, ask to exchange for anything else. This place is ave in food quality, above ave in service, and below ave in decor (buy new rugs and clean the walls, please) OK place for dinner. nothing tasted bad except the type of rice they buy. read more

Went in for only a drink and appetizers, they are under construction so very messy, but understandable. Drinks were good if you can get service. We ordered apps took awhile, but pickles were good, frys were cold. Seemed like you must know someone to get service, not sure it's a good place for outsiders. read more
