We are vegetarian and so glad we found Irene's while passing through town. Globe is known for its traditional Mexican food so finding a place that doesn't use lard in the beans here is tough, and finding an open restaurant on a Tuesday that's isn't Mexican is tougher. They have a small separate menu with their vegetarian friendly items which was also nice. We ordered a couple burritos with the whole bean alternative and chips/salsa came with the meal and everything was reasonably priced. I recently decided to dine in and loved the experience. Nice service. Salsa was good cold but spicy and chips fresh! #4 combo was almost great, the beef taco and bean tostado were tasty, the beef tamale was dry but the beans and were also good! I don't know why this place doesn't have better reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed my chicken burrito enchilada style with red sauce. Our server was incredibly kind without being overbearing. She's a local that was born and raised in Globe. We had time to chat a little and learn about her thoughts and feelings about her hometown and she has nothing but kind and loving things to say. We stopped here for lunch since it advertised outdoor seating (see picture) but we started anyway and boy am I glad that we did. It is a small place with booths and tables. The service was very good. They came out with free chips and salsa. The chips were nice and fresh and the salsa was wonderful- smooth, a bit smoky, and had a nice heat at the back of the mouth. Hubby ordered a #10 combo. The taco was excellent, nice beef/steak inside; the chili rellenos was very good, and the enchilada , which was hard to find with everything else on the plate was excellent. I had #6. I opted for a green chili burrito that was amazing. The chili rellenos was very good and the tostada was nice. Both plates came with rice and beans that was very tasty but more than you could eat. Wow don't know what happened. This place used to be great. Patsy was friendly but got our order wrong and charged us a lot For something we didn't order. The salsa tastes like a spicy tomato sauce. It was sweet and not good. The green chili chimichanga was also sweet. Didn't care for it. My man ordered a carne asada burrito and end up getting a gollo plate that they charged double for. Nothing tasted good. The sodas were flat. Hate to say it. But we won't go back. Sad to see things change. I'm giving two stars to be kind. read more

Globe - Miami Mexican food is really as good as the legends claim. I've been coming to Irene's for many years and gotta say, a regular burro enchilada style with a taco is excellent every time. They've been short staffed lately but that's kinda everywhere these days. The server on my last visit was busting his tail to keep up with the customer volume. And as expected, when the food arrived, everyone in my group cleaned their plates off. Tasty. Tasty. Do yourself a favor. Try all of the Mexican places in Globe and Miami. read more

So headed back to South Dakota where good Mexican food is fairly rare and so we stopped at Irene's for lunch to top off with AZ Mexican food. Yum. Very, very good. A very clean restaurant! The bathrooms are also clean as well. Chips and salsa are served prior to entree. I ordered the green chili chicken chimichanga and it came with rice and beans. Stopped by for a quick Halloween lunch on the way to the Apache Gold. The wait staff were all in costume and interior was decorated: making for a fun environment. Good service, but the food completely missed the mark. You can usually tell the meal how good Mexican meal is is going to be based on the chips and salsa. I tried the tacos, chicken fajitas, and wings. I found the tacos and fajitas to be extremely bland and greasy. The taco dish was covered with lots of cheese. The wings weren't bad and probably were the best part of the meal. The waitress was extremely nice and the food came out quickly. They also serve bottled beer and wine coolers. I was on a motorcycle ride to Salt River Canyon and stopped here based on the strong recommendation from a local I met at a gas station. The waitress was quick to get our drink order and bring chips and salsa to the table. I ordered the chicken chimichanga plain with rice only. I'm a huge fan of Spanish rice and extremely picky with rice. Our order was brought to us with a push serving cart which is a huge no no in the restaurant industry. I walked in and sat myself- it was a pretty busy lunch crowd, most were already eating. Somebody was over fairly quickly to take my order. I had a regular burro, enchilada style with a side of rice. While I waited, I noticed how very, very clean the restaurant is. There was a lady wiping down tables and chairs and I could smell cleaning mixture from my table. It may have been too strong, but that doesnt bother me at all. I LOVE a restaurant that is clean and sanitary. I have been to too many dirty places that this was a refreshing change. I waited 25 minutes for my food. I was starting to get ansy because I only had a 45 minute lunch break. When my food finally did come out, it was piping hot, straight out of the oven or whatever- WAHOO! It's always good to know that my food didn't sit in the window for 10 minutes. I tried the rice first and it had to be the fluffiest rice I have ever eaten- I now have a new standard of Excellence for spanish rice because of Irene's! Once my burro cooled a little, I enjoyed it. The red sauce was good, the beans were a tiny bit too runny but good flavor and the beef chunks inside were great, but not very much- more meat and it would have been perfect. The downside? I only saw my waitress 2 times: to take my order and bring me my food, she never reappeared to check my drink, which quickly needed a refill after my hot food came out. This is a good clean restaurant with a nice seasonal decor, you can tell someone really takes pride in how this place looks and presents itself.
