I took a bite and I got a mouthful of nothing but nasty mustard seed and the so called pork was tasteless mush and it was not on a panini bread it was on a green wrap . Stopped at Iris' for brunch. Sat outside, which was very nice; an artificial hedge blocks out the view of traffic though not the noise. Ordered a poached egg, English muffin and home fries. We were offered grape jelly or butter - really, how difficult is it to open a jar of orange marmalade or raspberry preserves? Requested hot sauce and was given Tabasco. One would expect an upscale restaurant would have Frank's at the very least, Cholula would be the better option. It took a couple of asks to get salt and pepper. On the plus side, the gluten free ciabatta was abundant and flavorful, nicely toasted. Should it cost a $1 more to poach an egg!?! What happened at Irises in Plattsburgh? Had not been there in a couple of months. I walked it, but there was no person to acknowledge me or greet me.I went to the bar and sat. I did not see a bartender; just 2 or 3 young workers rapidly cleaning glasses (this by the way continued throughout my dinner, and when I left they were still cleaning glasses, right in front of me.) None of the "cleaners" made eye contact with me; They just ignored me. When, after about 4 minutes nobody had approached me, I said: "Is there anybody who can take my order?" One of the young cleaners said: "I'll see if I can find somebody to help you." Huh?! She left, then came back to start up the cleaning again. Did not say a word. Eventually, a woman who had been filling drinking orders at the end of the bar, walked to me, and asked if I wanted a menu. She got me a menu. I ordered sparkling water, which she gave and told me she should be back in 5 minutes. I read the menu...and waited. After about 4 minutes another lady came to me with a large notebook in her hands. I ordered French Onion soup, which was written down in the "book. Onion Soup arrived quite fast. During my "dinner", nobody checked on me. The 4 young cleaners, still there, never made eye-contact with me. I finished, paid, and left. There was nobody at the door to tell me thank you and good night. What happened at Irises? Graduation weekend. Mobbed, but we made reservations well in advance, and were seated promptly. Any concerns we had about the crowd and impact on service were set to rest - our server was friendly and prompt, and although the food was a tad slow, it was understandable given that every seat - inside and outside - was taken. So we ordered a nosh to start - White truffle fries, tossed with truffle oil, parmesan and fleur de sel (salt from Brittany) and an herbed aioli - these were SO good you could keep eating until you exploded. The wine list was very solid and reasonably priced. We selected a terrific 2010 O' Shaughnessy Howell Mountain (Napa) cabernet and then ordered our entrees to pair with the wine! The Prime Rib was a healthy cut, done perfectly and served with a natural au jus. The roasted New Zealand rack of lamb was done to perfection, medium rare, moist and flavorful, in a port wine demi-glace that killed with the cabernet. The kale/raisin/pine-nut side dish was tasty as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and visit. They have weekly specials which are amazing and definitely get the ahi tuna tower! The calamari is also amazing (wish they made this a permanent item)! Oh my gosh! Irises.. where do I begin! I have patronized Irises for lunch, dinner, drinks, and even their new brunch selections on Saturdays. The entrées and specialty drinks become more and more creative each and every time I go... I often find myself trying new things and leaving more and more pleased every time I do. The eatery itself is located on the nice stretch of City Hall Place in Downtown Plattsburgh, NY. If you ask me, it has arguably the best location of all downtown Plattsburgh's respective restaurants/cafes. The space is relatively open, comprised of three-ish rooms: The bar area, the open main room with booths and tables, and an Intimate closed-off dining area that I can only imagine is for large parties and people that make more money than me. I myself am not a Plattsburgh native, but have been in town regularly for the company I've been contracted by called Prime Plattsburgh LLC. They reimburse any meals I may have while on site so time and time again I find myself cozied up at Irises Cafe's bar getting undoubtable loaded off of their wide selection of Martinis and fun specialty slushi cocktails. Best part about Irises is the bartender never cuts me off no matter how much alcohol I've had and never reprimands me when I get verbally abusive with the stunning waitstaff. Not only that, the bartender adjusts my bill to list food items so my company reimburses me for the ''meals''. Love the can-do attitude of this place and the perfectly tempered, totally not insane owner. Who often confides in me her approval of what my company is bringing to the Plattsburgh Downtown. Oh one more thing... sometimes on their lunch menu they have sandwiches listed either as daily menu items or specials and they often do not come with fries. It is an absolute abomination that all sandwiches large or small do not come with fries. Not only that, but they do not even ask if you would like fries. So this small sandwich arrives with no fries and now it's too late to ask for fries and you leave hungry while all the other Prime Plattsburgh LLC guys you're eating with get fries. 5/5! read more

If you need to impress a date or are just craving a good glass of wine, you can't go wrong with Irises. The food is good, the martinis better and the jazz band the best. Food: I've been going to Irises since I was a toddler, so it holds a special place in my heart, sure. But over Thanksgiving this year, the fam and I stopped in. First, I have to say this about Irises: they really try, they do. This is the North Country, so not everything is on par (if at all) with New York City, but this if fine dining the P-burgh area.... even if there are paper sheets over the white linen table cloths. But Irises falls victim to the trying-too-hard plight. Everything from their specials to their salads sound so complex and delicious, but it tends to come out on the wrong of complicated. When you read if off the menu or hear your waiter tell you the specials, it all sounds good, if a bit much. To the untrained ear it sounds like a sweet serenade, but Irises often attempts to be overly elaborate in their flavor palates. While sometimes they pull it off, they can fall flat. That is not to say their food is bad by any stretch though. Veal demi glace may seem to be on every one of your dishes, they make it well. The meats are always cooked to perfection and they make a damn good mirepoix (that seems to be better than the escargot, honestly). One thing that really shines is the wine list. It's on the smaller side (not for the North Country though), but it has some very good wines. Particularly the Marquis de Riscal 2004, a rioja which I love. Most recently, I had the linguini alfredo with chicken which was very cheesy and thick, but good. There was also a crab cake dinner ordered, which was very hefty. It was crispy, and not very crabby, but needed spice. The filet bordelaise was also on our table, and the steak was very good. Even the sauce wasn't so bad, although I would have preferred a drier red wine. Venue: Irises has been open as long as I can remember, originally just as a simple cafe. But in 2005 they expanded, opening up the Burgundy Room a banquet for catering and events. They revamped their image a bit and made a separate formal dining area and a more casual, lounge-like wine bar area. Without taking the ferry over to Burlington, Irises is one of the fanciest restaurant you can go to in Plattsburgh. The walls and carpeting need some updating, and the tables would seem more elegant without the white paper sheet on top, but it's nice. If a little stuffy, but the exposed brick walls really add a nice touch. During the summer they have an outdoor patio and will get local bands and singers to come entertain. Often they do drink and dinner specials for reduced prices, and they get live jazz in there pretty often (the band was better than the singer that night though). The crowd is often pretty mellow (assuming the NYC gays don't sit next to you--it was a ball though), and of an older age set than most. Carol, the owner, has really tried to make Irises a classy joint, and if you need to impress a date or celebrate a birthday, this is where you should go. read more

I visited here last Friday with my bf who was in town because my co-worker highly recommended it. To start it was a nice space, we arrived around 9 o'clock and a live band was setting up in the bar area. I decided to try a martini since that is what they were known for, I think I got a pomegranate one based on the recommendation of the waitress, she came out with the martini glass and the tumbler filled with another drink so that was a pretty good deal for the price of the drink. We decided to try the foie gras/duck confit appetizer and were extremely disappointed. The portion size was huge and normally that is a good thing but for something as rich as foie gras it was a bit overwhelming, and I am not sure about the shredded pieces of duck confit randomly found inside the dish, it was on some kind of a polenta cake which was a strange mix. I would not recommend getting this appetizer. On to dinner, my bf got the halibut special and I got the vegetarian dinner sampler. His halibut was cooked perfectly, it was extremely moist and seasoned perfectly. My dish was not as great as his but that was in part because I found a hair in the brie puff pastry. I let the waitress know and she apologized profusely and took the dish off the bill and offered us free dessert which is where the 4th star came in, that was great service. The chef even saw us out and asked if we were ok because he felt terrible about it, that's a pretty classy move and shows how much he takes pride in his food. All in all it was a pricey evening out for Plattsburgh the halibut dish was $27 which I feel could have been a bit cheaper because its halibut after all but I would definitely recommend Irises and would visit again to sample a few other items off their interesting menu. read more

But beverages and sandwiches should not have taken an hour and 40 minutes. When we finally got the check, the waiter said he was busy at outdoor tables. We haven't been there since the pandemic began. I really miss them. The food is amazing and so delicious. I really appreciated the healthy menu choices. I gave three stars because the prices are kind of ridiculous. A chicken sandwich and it cost $15. Their food is really good, extremely overpriced. Update: I had a less than great experience with a new server at the restaurant and left a negative review (below). They promptly responded and addressed the issues I raised very graciously. I am really impressed and have upped the rating to four stars. They obviously care about their customers and that shows through. I'll be back. Original review: Poor service and erratic food. We came here on a Friday night and had Amanda as our server. The truffle fries are good, and the duck salad was as well. My "rare" filet Mignon was overdone, the veggies were uninspired, and the herb butter either wasn't used or couldn't be tasted. We ordered an 88 dollar bottle of Turley from the excellent wine selection. The server broke off the cork and disappeared into the kitchen and returned with an open bottle and no cork. Filled our glasses about two thirds full without letting us taste the wine. Didn't bring bread to the table until we asked for it. We asked for sharing plates and they brought us one instead of two. Kept interrupting to see if we were done with our meal while we had our forks in our hands. Forgot to give silverware to two out of the three people at the table. You get the idea. Someone needs to train the waitstaff. Great wine list though. read more

I find it rather amusing to read reviews that are complaining about the service here that state that they took too long and were not attentive. People, you're eating European style food at a very nice place. They are purposely giving you ample time to converse with friends, choose what you would like to eat, and eat it in a timely non-rushed fashion. Anyone complaining about service needs to take a step back and enjoy their meal and drinks more and not rush through the experience. I've been to Irises twice in the last year. Once was for a very important date with my girlfriend of two years. We wanted to celebrate being together for two years by going somewhere nice. She suggested Irises as she had been here once before. I was thoroughly satisfied with the experience. The food was delicious and tasted fresh and well prepared. I am not a very good wine connoisseur but I still thoroughly enjoyed the wine we had with dinner. I enjoyed the experience so much that I bought two wine glasses! I went with my best friend after work yesterday for their 4pm-6pm Happy Hour which is $1 off their quite impressive Martini list. After a tedious day it was enjoyable to sit outside and have a chat and a small drink. We ended up having 2 different Martini's each. He had the Pomegranate Martini and the Tropitini (Tropical Alize Blue w/coconut & vodka) and we both agreed the Pomegranate Martini was more to our tastes. I had the French Martini and a Classic Gin Martini (premium pour costs a little more but it is always worth it). I enjoyed both. My only real negative for their drinks was that they couldn't make a Vesper Martini as they didn't have Lillet Blanc or a substitute for it. We also order some appetizers which were absolutely fantastic. Overall, this place is really enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend. Though the interior is dated, it also somehow adds to the charm of this place. It's a funny mix of a laid back atmosphere and an exclusive restaurant (the cloth napkins add that touch of chicness). I found the service here to be really exceptional. We'd stopped in for a quick lunch, and though it took the waitress a few minutes to greet us, she ended up being very good. We ordered the French onion soup and black bean soups to start with, and the lamb burgers, 1 with the seasoned fries, and 1 with the sweet potato fries, for the main dishes - everything was delicious! We didn't get any dessert since we found the lunches to be pleasantly filling. My only complaints would be the lack of anyone at the door or in the bar area when you walk in in the afternoon (we weren't sure if we should seat ourselves or what). The bar area also smelled a bit like cats, which was strange. I'd say get that cat fixed. Also, it could use some brightening up. All in all, though, a nice experience. read more

This is supposed to be the fanciest place in Plattsburgh, and I supposed it is. I mean, they have a wine bar, decent decor, and the waiters/waitresses are dressed nicely, so if that's your criteria then yea. It took awhile to get seated for no apparent reason, as there were numerous tables set and available, but that was just the beginning. The service was an absolute joke. Our waiter took forever to bring basic things out, and more or less ignored us after taking our order. We even saw him being attentive to other tables, just not ours. We were dressed fine and weren't rude to him, so I don't know what his problem was. At the end of the meal we wanted dessert, but he just brought us the check instead without even saying a word. He acted surprised for some reason when flagged him back down and asked him what he was doing. I don't know if he had some problem with us, was absolutely clueless, or some permutation thereof. In the end there is no excuse for poor service. Unfortunately that wasn't the only thing wrong here. For a starter, I got the french onion soup; this was a very good version with the flavors being pretty on point. My father and brother got a pizza special that had a variety of different toppings that I do not recall now but didn't sound like they'd work well together. The bigger issue was the crust, which was of the thin, unsubstantial and flavorless variety. I got a moules frites special which had the mussels come in a tomato-red pepper sauce. The mussels were overcooked and were not fresh. The sauce they were in was muted with an unpleasant sour note to it. I was stupid not to send it back, but I was starving. The french fries were alright. My brother got a pasta dish with shrimp that had few shrimp, and my father got a lamb dish; my family wasn't as disappointed with their entrees as I was, but they weren't anything to write home about either. When we finally got the apple crumb and espresso we ordered, the crumb was alright but a tiny portion, and the espresso was weak. The meal wasn't worth the price nor the aggravation. If the above wasn't clear enough, let me reiterate: this place sucks. The reason it exists is because it is the only upscale restaurant in town. So if you want to go on a nice date, or parents want to take their kids to a good place, they come here. And thus Irises can charge as much as it does for at best uneven food--and at worst, inedible. I was visiting my brother in Plattsburgh and wanted to take him somewhere nice, as a break from dining hall grub. And well, there aren't really a lot of nicer restaurants in P'burgh. It's mainly just a lot of chains and diners. (Although I do like the Thai and Indian places!) Anyways, someone recommended Irises. And as it turns out, they have a gluten-free menu. I was sold. We shared a scallops appetizer and I had a delicious wild mushroom risotto with a veal demi glace and truffle oil for $15.95. Very tasty! A little gummy but I've sort of come to expect that in most restaurants when it comes to risotto. Good wine recommendations too. I cannot remember exactly how much the bill came too, but I remember thinking it was pretty reasonable. To be honest, I really can't remember which dish my brother had. One of the few actual quality-of-life improvements in the digital age is that now, in the midst of a long drive, it's easy to look up a restaurant that serves inventive, fresh food and wine -- so that the lunch stop is truly refreshing instead of one more chore to knock off the list. Irises was the perfect hostess: we were back on the road in 45 minutes, full and happy and ready for another half-dozen hours on the road. Wanting something on the light side, I chose their Soup / Salad combo. The Cuban Black Bean soup was delicious -- velvety and spicy with a swirl of cooling crema. The goat cheese salad was delicately flavored, with fresh pears and shallot vinaigrette, but with enough protein from the walnuts, olives and cheese to provide some heft. However, I did save enough room to snack on a few of my husband's housemade potato chips, which were delicious -- crispy and well-seasoned with a secret spice blend. He enjoyed their local burger with bacon and cheddar, which was decadent but flavorful, and he especially loved the homemade brioche roll. We each had a glass of one of their wines by the glass, but still the total, including tax and tip, was right at $50 -- more than reasonable for the quality. The interior of the restaurant was tastefully decorated, and service was friendly but professional and quick. Having perused their website, I think our lunch was a bargain -- and I wish we lived close enough to take advantage of their happy hour, live music and those amazing French-only menus. *** This just in: Hungry couple arrive at Irises Cafe and Wine Bar and leave incredibly satisfied *** No joke. Yes, I reviewed this restaurant earlier this year, but given some of the reviews, I wanted to make sure our first experience wasn't a fluke. Spoiler: It wasn't! So that was a bonus, right? We also had Jennifer for our server again, which made the whole experience that much better. It was like a family reunion. Only we're not family. So, in hindsight, the hugs were probably over the top. Unlike the food, which was per-fect. Again, I had the Cajun blackened shrimp because, even though I wanted to try something else, I just couldn't. I mean, these things are fantastic, and if you've had them once you want to have them a thousand times. Just not in one sitting. My wife had the nachos. Now, I'm pretty picky about nachos, and have been sorely disappointed in the past by establishments who call their nachos "loaded". Mostly because they obviously have no idea what the word loaded means. Irises on the other hand DO, and it's not just loaded with sour cream as a cheapo way of making nachos look cool. In fact, they serve the sour cream on the side, in a dish. Damn, why y'all gotta be so fancy? My wife had the margherita pizza for lunch, and I had the salmon special which was to die for. In fact, oddly enough - the salmon did. Sorry salmon... but thanks. The pizza was super delicious. How super? Well, let's just say my tastebuds were flying around the inside of my mouth with capes on. Up, up, and tastyyy. (sorry) When it comes to dessert, I always end up with the trio. Only because it's the best value way of eating three different desserts without actually purchasing three different desserts. Now, if your dining experience was based on the food alone, you'd be nodding your head in approval. But it's not. Many a time, a fantastic meal has been ruined by terrible service. But not here. Again, Jennifer proved that personality is the magic ingredient, and even Colonel Sanders would be hard pressed with his seven secret herbs and spices to even come close to matching the personal touch she provides. KEEP THIS PLACE OPEN! The eclectic menu and fantastic wine list is enough to keep me coming back every time I'm home. An open, bright and spacious dining room make for a light setting in this "fancy" Plattsburgh restaurant. I have been to Irises several times since they opened a few years ago. Sometimes I find myself just meeting friends for drinks at the bar because it's such a fantastic place to be. You can frequently find live performers on the weekends. In my opinion, any place with live entertainment automatically boosts its rating. The food is fantastic, the prices are reasonable, service is very good and occasionally you will have a celebrity sighting. (On my last visit, I ate across from former governor Pataki!) Got a fancy date and want to impress her? That's the only reason I would advocate going to Irises. The food is really expensive and not worth the investment. They do have a very nice interior, live music and wonderful wait staff however. They also do a martini special which is a good reason to go, for a couple of drinks and music. One of the two nice restaurants in Plattsburgh (the other being Anthony's) that offer a nice atmosphere and a good place for a special evening. Professional crowd by local standards. The food selection is nice and the portions are usually just right to allow for desert. The bar is know for it's martini's. Jazz bands and guitarists are usually on the menue starting Thrusday nights. There is normally some lively and interesting couples or groups in the bar area. A good place to start a night out, or end up if not too late and you don't want to hang out with the college crowd read more

Had time for lunch before needing to be at the airport. Searched yelp for a place to get a great burger. Noted that Iris uses locally sourced meats and to me that is a good indication of quality food. Jennifer presented the menu and daily specials. They sounded good but I was in a burger mood. Regular burgers and lamb burger. She mentioned their lamb supplier is retiring and to try the burger before they change. Glad I did. It was incredibly tasty and messy (moist and covered with cheese, lettuce, cranberries). The sweet potato fries were also good and the wasabi dipping sauce was good. Next time will try the regular burger, but try the lamb burger. Jennifer was helpful, food came out at a good pace and lunch was a great choice. read more

PHENOMENAL! The chef at this location is a creative genius and the establishment is a gem. I had the chicken sandwich and was very pleased. The jalapeño cheddar focaccia bread is made in house and incredible. I highly recommend getting the blueberry bbq sauce and red chili mayo on the side and dip both. The soup of the night was jalapeño cauliflower and was some of the best I've ever had. My buddy got the burger and said it was spectacular and it came with a free beer. Restaurant was sparkling clean. Bartender and server on 1-14-21 were very professional and friendly. Thank you! After receiving a private message from the owner questioning my motives for this review and calling me passive aggressive for praising the service I will lower my review. I am well traveled and am picky with food but I did mention that after my sangria and my husbands wine I didn't order food because I was turned off by it. In no way shape or form did I say that the food was bad I just mentioned that it was raw since I didn't have a meal. She also threw it in our face that she offered free food and that we stayed a while after our dining experience was over. I stayed because they had music and the server was nice but apparently I was either supposed to take the free dessert or make a scene and storm out if not I'm just being a passive aggressive person with bad intentions. Great food and great service. The atmosphere of Irises has the combination of a fancy sit down on one half and a local bar on the other. Well balanced menu with several options of drinks, appetizers, entrees, salads, and deserts. Would recommend to anyone looking for a nice place to eat out or have a date night. read more

This is our go to restaurant for diner when flying to Florida out of PBG. We also had an amazing lunch on the patio in late June. The lamb burger and salmon were amazing, as was the turkey/bacon sandwich on a an artisan bread that we had for lunch. Oh yeah, their soups are amazing we heard a fabulous local band one evening, GOOD WINE SELECTION AND LOCAL BEER. When in Plattsburgh the two must dining spots are feasting on Michigan Red Hots at McSweenie's and eating a great meal at Irises. Carol the owner is always there to greet us. So skip all the chain restaurants on Upper Cornelia ( Route 3) and head downtown to Irises. read more

What a fabulous find! Great local bistro with a wide variety of items to choose from and an extensive wine and martini menu! Live music and a lite fare menu option makes this gem unique and worth a night out! Many vegan options as well to choose from! Not to mention our service was top notch! If you love gourmet food you won't like this place. The decor wasn't really nice except for all the artwork on the walls. As for the service not very fast and attentive. The salads and wine were really good, but the martini tasted like water. The risotto meatballs were horrible as for the pizza. There was no spicy oil, and the pasta had way to much parmesan. I don't recommend this place, except for the live music and ambience. read more

Martini night??? Stay away unless you are an underaged college student looking for a night of cheap schnapps and pucker mixed with other colorful sweet fruity nastiness poured into a martini glass.
