I needed an installation done to upgrade my OEM exhaust on a 2019 Ram Rebel to the Borla exhaust system. While shopping around the DC Metro area for a reputable shop to do the work or that "could" do the work- I was met with no returned phone calls, "....cant do it..." and no returned emails from the "contact us" form from a majority of businesses..... I saw Iron Mike's reviews on Yelp- pretty much all 5 stars coupled with a family run business and decided to consider them. My inquiry was returned almost immediately with a very fair and attractive quote, and they were more than accommodating in scheduling a mutually agreeable appointment time. While the location of the shop is somewhat off the beaten path of 355 proper in an area that time has seemed to have forgotten- I arrived at the agreed upon time, was greeted in a most welcoming manner and Iron Mike's took it from there. I was assured the work would be completed and I could pick my truck up at the end of the day so I decided to visit the Original Pancake House and explore White Flint and Rockville for the day-- To my surprise, just a few hours later, I got a phone call from Iron Mike's and was advised my truck was ready, everything went smoothly and I could pick up my truck any time. When I arrived, I was more than surprised to learn that because the job went a little quicker than anticipated, my bill was well under the quote and was incredibly fair !!!! It is so nice to see a business that appreciates YOUR business, coupled with taking pride in their work and more importantly doing a great job. It is also abundantly clear Iron Mikes knows their way around a car or a truck- and are very honest mechanics which is a rarity in this area. I think this is the 3rd time in my life to write a review. But given how few true regular guy heroes there are in this world now, I felt it my duty to pass along some transparency of one of the good guys out there. I hired Mike to inspect a 1970 Camaro SS396 I bought from Flemings Ultimate Garage on 5/4/19. The car was on display at a concert this company was sponsoring and what can I say, I made an impulse buy. Even though I sign the docs "Pending Inspection and Test Drive", I was put through the ringer with these terrible cliches of "used car salespeople". Apologies for the honest car salesmen out there. You should not have to wear someone else's black eye. But the cliche exists for a reason. Bottom line is Mike dealt with me honestly and thoroughly. He could have served the interest of a local dealer that could have brought him much more business than me, but he opted to be a real man and tell me the truth about all the problems with the car. I spoke with him at 8 pm at night. I had to have him do a total of 3 inspections for the same car over 2 months with even the last one showing such egregious deficiencies you would fall off your chair reading about them. It would not even come close to passing inspection. Engine bolts lose, lug nuts that do not cover the entire stem. Alignment off. Missing parts. Blue smoke shooting out of the exhaust. And not a single working gauge in the car. Mind you, they had 2 months and 15 emails of promises all would be fixed an in $40,000 car condition. You can tell the culture he has created permeates through the organization. Just as any top notch organization - culture is set from the top. These are car guy, artists, true craftsmen who wouldn't lower themselves or their body of work for a quick buck. Cutting corners is a slap to his own integrity. He would now lower himself. He's not expensive but not cheap. But really, how many times in life did the "cheap" route ever work out for anyone right? As per whether to trust me on this. I've never even seen his face. I live in NYC. I have no family connections or any conflicts of interest. I'm am a CFP(R) and CPM(R) for a major bulge bracket firm on Wall Street and have consistently ranked as one of the top in my industry for over 10 years. I believe lying in business is the same as stealing. REAL men and woman on this planet.... would never lower themselves or their body of work to do so. My core expertise and multi-decade passion projects are in the areas of Behavioral Finance, Evolutionary Psychology and Sociology as managing financial markets is nothing more than managing a collection of opinions. I maintain credentials from Columbia University Graduate School of Financial Engineering. Oh yeah, and I finished all my high school credits by my junior year so I could go to Voc school my senior year to rebuild my 1971 Mach 1 Mustang I bought at 15 with my paper route money. About 2 years ago I brought my mustang to this shop because I couldn't get the FiTech fuel injection to work, they took about a week or 2 to tell me reason it doesn't work because my engine is bad... charge me nearly $3000 just tell me that. Yeah you should get paid to work but if you can't fix something you shouldn't charge that... I finally took it to another shop.. and they fixed it ! Nothing wrong with the engine you (iron Mike) just don't know how diagnose or work on a fuel injection system... I really hope karma comes back takes you all out of business! Not only did they handle my install of suspension parts, a new short throw shifter, a new hood, and more on my 2013 Mustang GT - but they made sure to go above and beyond along the way. I was referred to Iron Mike's by a specialty mechanic whom I know and trust. Since he doesn't work on the kind or car I drive, I asked him to recommend an alternative. I told him about the "pain in the neck factor" of not wanting to rely on a dealership for service because of cost and hassle and not wanting to go through the process of finding a reliable auto shop through trial and error. Here's how I phrased my wishlist to him......"I know I'm reaching for the stars, but I'd like to find a mechanic that is skilled, communicative, reasonably priced and is trustworthy." He barely paused, "Go to Iron Mike's in Rockville, and ask for Mike or Jason." Still keeping my expectations low, I dropped by Iron Mike's to see if I could get a comfort level to feel like my car would be fixed without hassle or having sticker shock. Holy s@#$, did they surpass my expectations!! Mike and Jason are exactly what I thought I couldn't find. They listened (without looking at their watches), asked some clarification questions and then gave me their feedback. In the 15 or so minutes that we spoke, a tech came into the reception area and told Jason that he had replaced a burned out headlight bulb and a burned out taillight bulb. I had been procrastinating getting those fixed for a week. One less thing for me to have on my to-do list was a relief.....AND, when I asked Mike for the cost, he said, "No charge. We want you to be a long time customer, and we do these types of things for our customers." This review isn't about getting a free taillight bulb. It is about recognizing a company which functions in a way that embraces the notion that certain customer expectations should be matter of course. So I call around trying to find a top notch mechanic to change out the factory 2.73 gear to a 3.73 gear in my new 2014 Mustang. I called 4 shops in the greater Maryland area. The 4th call was to Iron Mike's Garage. After an excellent conversation with Mike I decided to go with him. BEST DECISION I ever made regarding auto work. Upon arrival, I immediately discovered this had to be a great garage based on the show cars that he was working on, not to mention the classic cars being restored. When it came to my project, not only was the work impeccable, but he also took pictures while the work was being performed. Then, at no charge, he painted my rear axle black so it would look better (which it does). He told me to come back after 500 miles to check the gear to confirm there were no iron filings in the fluid and when I returned after 500 miles, he let me stand there and watch him as he checked it. He took his time and carefully rubbing his finger inside the differential to make sure there were no small pieces in the gear box (after examining the exiting fluid). Then he very skillfully cleaned and sanded the plate that was removed, gingerly installed a new gasket, bolted on the plate, filled the differential with fluid and told me to test drive. Iron Mike is one of the best garages I have ever been to in my 50+ years of dealing with mechanics. This is by far a hidden jewel tucked away in Rockville. He does everything from oil changes to very custom work. And why is he so good? 1) His knowledge about automobiles is uncanny. 2) He treats every car as if it is his own. 3) He treats all his employees like family. 4) He is honest. 5) He loves cars and it shows. 6) He only wants happy customers. So yeah, I'm in Maryland from Cleveland, Ohio, visiting folks and the exhaust system on my jeep blows out. I drove it around over the weekend with it getting progressively louder but I knew I'd have to try and get it fixed before heading back home. Looking online for repair shops I came across Yelp reviews for several places and Iron Mike's was the first one I looked at and it really stood out. I liked the idea of a smaller, kind of "family" run shop, and the reviews I read gave me the impression that it was run by folks that cared about the work they did on people's cars. I called them on Monday morning and Deborah, who answered the phone was really nice and truly interested in finding out what my situation was and how they might be able to help. She told me to bring it right over. Upon arriving, I knew I had made the right choice because it was just the kind of place that I like - lots of character and personality in the environment and decor, and not just some sterile, fast-food, chain-store repair shop like NTB, or Midas. And everybody there was just, I don't know... cool. They had my car in within minutes and brought me in to show me what the problem was and lay out what my options were. They did not try to give me the hard-sell on the most expensive thing, but let me make the decision based on my needs, finances and time constraints. Once I told them my preference they got right on it, and I settled in to watch a movie on my laptop. I don't think I got even a half-hour in, and Deborah's like, "he's about to pull your car out now, you're all set!" I was very happy with the bill too - got out of there with both arms and legs, and was on my merry way. I just got back to Cleveland and the jeep ran like a champ, strong, smooth and quiet! My hope and belief is that years from now I will be writing the review that Zachary R wrote. Until then, let me tell you my initial experience. When I called, I got Deborah who asked if I wanted to come in today, and whether I wanted to wait, or leave the car. I like options - first plus. Then when we got there, we were warmly greeted by Deborah and Trooper (Mike's very friendly pooch) - second plus. After a few minutes Mike came out, immediately drove the car into the garage, quickly assessed it, gave us a fair estimate, and in less than two hours it was finished. Wow! Keep piling on the plusses. So here is what's so impressive besides the quick, fairly priced, friendly service. Mike took us into the garage and throughly explained the problem, showed us on the car, and also showed us around the shop, which included an area where he was restoring old cars. Mike is personable, funny, and honest. I told him about a recent experience at my dealership where they said we needed a new catalytic converter, a $1400 repair I declined. When I told him that we got two indicator lights, one for a loose gas cap, and one for the engine (I reseated the gas cap, and the engine light went off), he explained why they were likely related. In addition, every person coming into the shop knew Mike, extolled his virtues, and said we'd never find a better mechanic. You really do feel like you're part of the family. I went there a couple of times a few years back. He seemed nice enough at first. Had my oil changed a few times. First time, they broke something on my car, so after I got it back, oil started pouring out, and left a trail of billowing smoke behind my car. I called the garage. They did fix the problem, but I ended up being super late for work. The 2nd and last time, I was in for another oil change. I was informed by Mike that they were slightly backed up so It would take a while. I explained that I would have to wait because I did not have anyone to give me a lift. 2 hours later..which I was not upset about because they were really busy. I asked Mike if he thought it would be much longer. I was trying to see if someone could, infact pick me up so I wouldn't have to wait. He raised his voice at me..enough that everyone could hear. Shouted how he had other customers besides me, and that I needed to get over myself. I then explained that I was only asking because I had a potential lift. No apology..I just got more attitude. Unfortunately, I had to leave my car with him because I needed the oil changed. I was completely embarrassed...but he is the one that should have been embarrassed. Recently re-entered the classic car world and needed to find a good shop. What I found was a great shop with great people. My first issues were electrical gremlins, and never have I had such detailed service. While in the process of investigating the 48-year-old wiring, Jason took the time to call as well as take photos of what he was finding. Who does that? An honest and knowledgeable mechanic is the answer. And Deborah at the front desk is about as nice as they come. Honestly, I hope to never have to see them again, to never have the need for any repair work.
