I've had a few disappointing steaks lately, but this place has officially become my go to!! I hadn't been back in over a decade. They were always famous for their pork chop, which I used to eat all the time during my early college years. Now that I'm in Chinatown/FiDi more often, I'm so glad I decided to come back. The service is pretty typical for a hole-in-the-wall spot... it's not what people come here for. Although we read some decent reviews, I have to say that we were disappointed overall with our food and our experience. The bathrooms were pretty dirty, and the restaurant wasn't super clean. I was debating on getting that or the prime rib special($24.95) I went with the Roasted Pork because she said it was the most popular and I can always come back! It was amazing. No one was inside but then a gentleman walked in so I decided to just follow since I was exhausted and hungry. Inside there are 4 booth and two tables. I sat at a booth and was promptly brought a menu and tea. After looking at a surprisingly large menu, I decided on the marinated pork chop lunch special which comes with soup and soda. The house soup came out and later a complimentary potsticker. The potsticker was juicy but a little oily on the outside. Soon my meal came and I was surprised that there were three finely sliced pork chops, a good portion of white rice and cabbage with corn. I was also brought a can of orange soda. The portion was large and the pork chops were easy to cut with the sharp knife he provided. The sauce was on point and I ate it all with my pork chop. I was surprised and definitely will be back. I was craving some cheap eats in SF, and found this spot on Yelp's list of the best budget bites in town, so I stopped by for a late lunch and it did not disappoint. The place definitely has that "hasn't been remodeled in 50 years" feel. But, IMO, that gave it some true charm. Since New Lun Ting bills itself as a "pork chop house," I felt obliged to order their noodle soup with marinated pork chop. Soon enough, I could hear the sizzling of a pork chop from the nearby kitchen, which was cooked to perfection while I enjoyed my tea, a complimentary cup of soup, and a mini dumpling appetizer. When my giant bowl of goodness arrived, I was ready to dive in! The bowl of thin egg noodles was steeped in a hot broth and topped with the sliced pork chop. Luckily, I was hungry, but I still couldn't finish it as the portion was easily big enough for two people. I did my best, though! The prices here were truly fantastic. What a lovely, comforting little restaurant!! We usually go to VIP Coffee and Cake Lounge but decided to try somewhere new and came here. Immediately I knew it would be good when we stepped in. We were given some small bowls of soup with carrot, lotus root, and abalone which tasted like it had been brewed for a nice long time. It was a very unique experience to be having a prime rib dinner at a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. I walked in with a group of 8, we were immediately greeted by a lady who seemed to run the entire dining room. She was very to-the-point and efficient. She treated us very well, giving us complementary pan-fried dumplings, and even making sure our friend who came later got everything that the rest of us got as well. The usual Chinese menu items we ordered were all pretty standard, including the hot & sour soup. The pork chop was flavorful & cooked well, but the gravy on top of it had a weird gelatinous consistency that took a while to get used to. The prime rib was a more-adventurous item that we ordered, and although it wasn't bad, I think I'd skip it on my next visit. read more

Wow!! My fiancé has always raved about this spot and I finally had the opportunity to come try this gem for myself. We both ordered the combo with roast pork and corned beef which also comes with a bowl of soup, a dumpling & a can of soda. I believe they offer the $15 lunch combo that they were offering during SF Restaurant Week as a regular item now. The portions are huge, I couldn't finish my plate and actually had enough for another meal. The dumpling was big, juicy and flavorful! I believe they make the dumplings in house as well. The bitter melon soup is similar to the type of 老火湯 you can expect from your grandma or mom! Overall the food was flavorful but not overly salty & for $15 the lunch combo is a steal! I went here with my coworkers who raved about this place, and because they had a sign that said they accepted credit cards was a bonus. (don't trust the sign and they need to take that off) We sat down, ordered and waited hella long for our food. We wanted to go to an inexpensive restaurant in Chinatown and this popped up when looking for ones with good reviews. When you walk in, you can immediate tell it has had a long history in this city. One site mentioned it opened more than 100 years ago! We sat down at a table to look over the menu and noticed that it seemed to be popular with locals for takeout as several people popped in for orders. We ended up ordering Shrimp Fried Rice and the "Pepper Fish" from the specials sign on the wall. As I noticed in reviews, complimentary hot tea soon came to the table along with bowls of soup and mini dumpling appetizers! The main courses came out and we enjoyed them very much. I was surprised at how tasty the fish was! The entire meal was satisfying - you get a lot for your money. We will definitely come here the next time we are in town. As fantastic as it has been to see the likes of China Live, Empress by Boon, and Mister Jiu's open up in Chinatown over the years, it's equally sad to see the number of long-standing eateries in the neighborhood dwindle. Every time one folds, it makes me feel increasingly appreciative of the places that are still around, especially those that my relatives used to frequent. Given that, I don't know which is worse - that I'd never checked out New Lun Ting up until about eight years ago or that it took me about eight years (and a few more recent visits) to finally write this. Either way, it's safe to say I'm just a smidge late to the party on both counts... While the signage above the door lists that they've been around since 1909, I assume that refers to when the original Lun Ting opened, as the current one opened up in the 1930's or so. Regardless, it's safe to say that New Lun Ting have served generations of families over the last 90+ years they've been around. They even still have one of their old dining counters from when the majority of customers were bachelors and male diners who worked here while their families were back in China. Perhaps somewhat as a result, the menu is a bit like a greasy diner, with options ranging from typical Cantonese dishes to more American/Western offerings at fairly budget friendly prices. -- POTSTICKER APPETIZER I believe this, and a bowl of their house soup, comes included with every dish and it's actually pretty good. The skin isn't overly thick, the filling is relatively juicy, and, surprisingly, it's not one of those generic frozen types you see at Asian markets. That said, it does feel like they've gotten smaller over time. -- ROAST PORK Their nickname may be "pork chop house", but this is essentially their signature dish. The chunks of pork are quite moist, even without the house gravy that's slathered all over it, fairly well seasoned, and is served in a rather generous portion. -- PRIME RIB I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was actually pretty decent. Although it wasn't the prettiest cut, the roast beef was fairly tender, cooked reasonably well, and had a nice bit of seasoning to it. HoPR has no reason to be scared, but this wasn't bad for the money/Chinatown. As is the stereotype for Chinese businesses, service here is nothing to write home about, but it's certainly far from rude or gruff. The worker who takes orders may not be the warmest, but she's friendly enough. The one thing I didn't love, though, was how one of the menu pages showed the combo meal option that we ordered included a can of soda, but ended up being an added charge on our bill. Apparently we either didn't order the right dish to get the deal or that it's no longer offered (it's listed as a special for 2023), but it didn't seem worth it to make an issue over a $2 can of Diet Coke. Beyond the issue with the menu, pretty much everything else about our experiences here have been perfectly fine. However, I feel like the food here isn't quite as good as it was eight years ago. Specifically, I remember being more enamored with the roast pork the first couple of times I had it, but that just might have more to do with the cuts of pork the last couple of times I was here. The most recent time I had it, for example, there were several pieces that were made up entirely of fat. As such, despite how much I want to give this place four stars, they're closer to a three at this point. That said, I still planning on making more trips here in the future. Hopefully, things will improve enough for me to change that, but really, I just want to see New Lun Ting stick around for many more generations to come! It has been around for over 100 years. Their signature dish is pork chop. After I read some Yelp reviews, decided to give it a try. YES! It was indeed delicious! Strongly recommend it. They call it "old Chinatown", a restaurant that has survived many, many years and the moment I walked in I can feel that in my bones. My friend's grandpa used to be the Chinatown butcher and the moment we walked in, everyone greeted him like a local legend. What a beautiful moment.
