Isarn is the one! This time I tried the Chiang Mai noodles which was beautiful and bursting with flavor - and also huge - it seemed like there was an entire bird worth of chicken in the dish. Also went for the beef appetizer which was chewy (in a good way) and satisfying and the eggplant/ground chicken appetizer, which was also good. Finally decided to try this spot out after my shift tonight... andddd it was pretty good! Not the most authentic pad Thai, but it was filling and had a good noodle to egg to bean sprout etc etc ratio. I decided to opt for prawns (+$2) instead of chicken or tofu, and the prawns were cooked really well! Isarn has become our go-to when we're looking for some good eats in the big city, and this little spot on 65th St seems to do it especially well. From the cozy vibes and eclectic decor, as soon as I walk in the door I feel like I've been transported to a quaint street in Bangkok! During our last visit, we happened to get there just before happy hour ended (I didn't even know they had a HH but...yay). We ordered a couple of discounted draft beers (I had a Singha, dude had a Trickster IPA), a plate of their sinfully delish lemongrass chicken wings, and a green papaya salad that was super spicy in that you-have-to-just-keep-eating-it sort of way. For a main course, we also ordered pad kee mao with pork - the noodles were wide and delish and everything was so fresh. The atmosphere is date night, however many families dine here and could get very loud. Parking was a huge hassle, and during peak hours it will be difficult to find parking and might need to park far and walk to the place. I heard many good things about the place hope it lives up to it. Off to the food review! 3.7/5 - Hai Yat Fried Chicken - The skin is beautifully fried, and tasted good, but surprisingly the meat itself was kind of dried and really needed the sweet sticky sauce to make up for it. Really missed the mark on the cook but skin was good. Tried sticky rice with it as it was recommended, not really needed and didn't really mesh together as i expected in flavors. 3.3/5 - Mushroom Fritters - Was highly recommended by the waiter. It has a decent crisp but the flavor of the mushroom was quite overpowering. Sauce helped in bit, but in general not a fan of the dish. My partner who ordered it hoped it similar to calamari, but didn't really live up to how much the waiter was pushing it. 3.8/5 - Chiang Mai Curry Noodles - Crispy noodles served with a coconut-y curry soup that was quite flavorful. Presentation is top notch and looks very appetizing. The sweetness of the curry really does the dish justice, but blending all the complex flavors together. Wished there was more meat as the portion of noodles was way higher than expected. Overall felt this place was overhyped. An incredible ambiance right off 65th and near the 62 bus line :) a convenient romantically lit spot. We had so many delicious dishes and really went ham on the happy hour. - Chicken Wings - Som Tum (Papaya Salad) - (2) grilled squids For the mains we got the Chu Chi Red Curry! This was delish and we got 1/3 stars for spiciness- could have gone up they were very light on the spicy. The other dish was recommended by the server some fried pork to match with the jasmine rice and we also enjoyed this. Definitely has the street eats vibe with an upscale ambiance. We love their Kirkland location and have walked by this location a couple times on our way to other restaurants, finally decided to try them for dinner. We got Mushroom Fritters, Chu Chi Red Curry Dinner w/ Salmon, and Kao Man Gai. We have had Mushroon Fritters in Kirkland and love it. This one was greasy and a bit soggy, didn't have the same crunchy texture as Kirkland. First time trying Kao Man Gai, the chicken was very bland for me. Seasoned w/ chilli powder, fish sauce, fresh lime juice I would sum up the food as delightfully flavorful and fresh. However, most of the meats need work. I've eaten a lot of duck and the ground meat in the duck salad could've easily been mistaken as pork. The beef in the northern curry was terribly dry. The fried chicken was crispy, seasoned but the white meat was also dry. Service was subpar. I am so glad my cousin brought me here for a late lunch, early dinner. We were seated immediately and ordered the corn salad, medium spice level, and the wings on happy hour special. We also ordered a thai tea and thai coffee. For entrees, we got the special noodle dish with medium spice level and the steak. Everything went beautifully together and spice level was a build up so do not ask for more if you can't handle it. It was perfect. The service was spot on and they recommended medium spice, which I won't lie I was skeptical because everyone says it's hot and it's not. This was accurate. We visited on Sunday just before 7pm. Parking is on the street and there were a couple spots at the front of the restaurant. This place is not too big with 3 booths at the bar and 6-8 tables in the dining area. The decor had hints of Thailand and was beautifully done. We were greeted quickly and our order was taken. We ordered the beef Pad See Eiw, pork belly stew and a chicken red curry. The ice tea was tasty and had a bit strong carmel flavor. The sauce with the pork belly was good and a great companion to a bowl of rice. The pork lacked flavor but was soft and easy to chew. Solid Thai food in the Ravenna area. Isarn is an easy take-out/delivery option for my fiance and me since we live in the neighborhood. The food is generally consistent. Papaya salad, Tom yum or Tom kha. All pretty good. Even with delivery. We dined in for the first time last night, though - and let me say, dining in the restaurant elevated the food! Definitely a step up in flavor and experience. Something about the food served hot is better (obviously). But I was nonetheless surprised by how good the food was. I guess my impression based on take-out was a bit biased. (I'd prolly rate take-out taste at 3 to 3.5/5 stars, which means it meets standards/gets the job done). To be fair, bf and I did not get our norm take-out order last night. We got the lettuce wraps (5/5), spicy and sweet northern style curry (4.5/5), pad kee mau (5/5), and the egg omelette prawn curry (4/5). All were pretty darn tasty. Isarn's food runs sweeter in general, hence 4/5 stars. It's not my preference to be as sweet as they do things, but they do enough with the other flavors (salty, acid/sour, and spicy) to help balance things out. The pad kee mau last night was a stand out with the high wok heat adding that must layer of char to the dish. The interior is beautifully done. Elevated Thai soul food vibes - definitely on par with what I experienced in the heart of modern downtown Bangkok. Highly recommend dining in (not take-out) if you decide to try Isarn. We don't usually go up to this area, but we were up here for my daughter flag football practice. We had some time to kill and it was pretty much lunch time so I yelped for the closest Asian restaurant and Isarn came up with good reviews and the menu attracts my attention. I love mushroom so we ordered two mushroom dishes, but I like the garlic mushroom more I guess because I can taste the mushroom and also the flavoring is just right. The seafood tom yum is on point. We like sour stuff and the tom yum is made sour just right. The Phad See Eiw is good but it's a tiny bit salty (for me) and I thought the grilled fresh squid would be grilled but it doesn't seem like it. And according to my husband, their restroom is really clean and no smell. It says a lot about a place and their service. We don't like to go dine at places with filthy and smelly restroom. I swear, Isarn's mushroom fritters is the bomb. Crunchy oyster mushrooms (battered and perfectly deep fried, served with sweet plum sauce) is a great substitute of any given basket of fries. This is all I need for the happy hour, along with an ice cold pint of beer. For dinner thou, Som Tum and Chiang Mai Curry Noodles are the must-try here. I love the variety of Som Tum they carry here - these papaya salad are very flavorful yet refreshing, with plentiful fresh herbs and spices. Curry Noodle is served in the bowl with a nutty-er, thicker curry soup. Noodle is about linguine width, which goes very well with this kind of soup. Noodle is served with a large portion of chicken and some fried noodle on top - enjoy the different textures of noodles (soft in the soup and crunchy on top of the soup) to savor this wonderful dish. Food and service quality are equally good. They offer dishes we usually don't see in other typical Thai restaurants and what surprised me was they have kids menu - so as parent I don't need to worry about if the food is too spicy to share with my daughter. Service is attentive and especially we dined in late like an hour before they close. We still haven't finished yet at the time they closed but we were still being served with more water and they never rushed us like cleaning our table or giving us check until we asked for. If one thing needs improvement I would say the side order sticky rice. It was a little bit too hard to chew, personally like a softer texture. Overall, very satisfied with the food and services! Isarn Thai is definitely worth a trip if you're looking for authentic Thai flavours with a variety of options. We started with two drinks - the odd couple and the golden eye. The odd couple was definitely a winner, with a nice boozy sour and herbal taste all coming together for layers of flavour complexity. The golden eye falls short though, the herbal flavours drawing too much attention without any balance aside from a singular orange peel. The dishes came very quickly: mushroom fritters and salty crab papaya salad. Mushroom fritters were cooked perfectly, moist and crispy with a tangy sweet sauce to go along with it. The salty crab papaya salad is a classic and does not disappoint, make sure to pair each bite with the prepared cabbage so it's not too salty! Also a word of warning- there are small "raw" looking crab bits in this salad: they are cured and you can gently bite into them to coerce the remnants of flesh out. Finally the coconut curry comes with an abundance of seafood bursting at the top, so much they had a separate plate to hold the remainder, as well as a glass of coconut water from the young coconut used. The coconut cream forms a slurry with the curry and seafood, making delicious creamy curds layered with chunks of cod, calamari and mussels. My only gripe is the menu mentions there's shrimp and scallop as well, which yes there was exactly one of each. Another word of warning: there may be small bits of shell in the curry so consume carefully. The restaurant service was very quick and the decor has a nice modern Thai charm. Overall, Isarn Thai delivers a large array of great Thai flavours in several of their signature dishes, but there are misses that you may encounter, like the golden eye cocktail. read more
