We walked into the Island Cafe and grill the other night and was greeted immediately. Not knowing the cuisine that well. We started talking to the people around us and they recommended the Jamaican jerk chicken and oxtail combo. The chicken was to die for and the oxtail rich and gelatinous like it should be. We added a pina colada for an island touch and it was delicious. The most endearing part were the waitresses.. smiles everywhere welcoming everyone.. even though we may not have looked like their normal clientele, they treated us like family. We walked in and immediately was seated, this place was crazy busy. We were brought coffee right a way and Tasha our server was excellent. We ordered and it was on our table with another round of coffee in no time,literally,We were only waiting for about 10 minutes. This is a little train that can and does. On a Reggae night, expect to be jamming, particularly if you imbibe in their mule version - OH MY I GREW HAIR ON MY CHEST! Wife had business in Hyannis over the weekend during the off-season (mid-Oct) and I tagged along. We knew most businesses either close early or don't open at all during the off-season so our options were limited. However on the plus side there's practically no waiting and so we seized the opportunity to try real local breakfast spots (not hotels) that remained opened for locals. We visited Island Cafe & Grill based on yelp photos, ratings & reviews. Getting there wasn't too bad. It's situated a couple of minutes away from Main Street by car. After navigating through an ocean of construction cones at the intersection of Transportation Ave and Route 28 (Iyannough Rd), we arrived at our destination. A word of advice -- avoid Transportation Ave. Island cafe is small but has plenty of parking and charm. We parked in front and entered through the front. The owner greeted us and invited us to sit anywhere. We opted to sit at a corner table with a good vantage point of the entire place from the bar to the main dining room at the rear. Our server promptly arrived with our menus. We ordered orange juice first and then our breakfast entrees. I ordered the Breakfast Hash with eggs over easy and whole wheat toast dry. My wife ordered a Farm Fresh Omelette just Cheese & Onions with home fries and an English muffin toasted with butter. As we waited, we noticed the table top where we sat wasn't mounted securely to the legs and slide with the slightest pressure just with the weight of an arm. This was distracting with everything shifting on the table. Our hunger and the anticipation of eating our entrees superseded any distractions this may have had at that time. The fellow who was seated next to us finished his breakfast and left. A larger group of six arrived. After an inordinate amount of time waiting without our food, we noticed this group had ordered, received their food and were eating but we still hadn't been served yet. After 30 minutes, we beckoned our server who came and asked my wife what she ordered again. She apologized and said that she had put the order in for the larger group first and the kitchen was backed up and that she would put our order in immediately. Our jaws dropped. 45 minutes had passed and my wife had to be work. The owner apologized offering to make our orders to go free of charge. We thanked her, explained that we couldn't stay but wanted to pay anyway. She refused to accept payment and quickly gave us our boxed and bagged entrees. My wife's omelet unfortunately sat in the bag untouched in our backseat while she was at work. I however ate my Breakfast Hash in the car which was delicious. Overall, we applaud the owner for doing what was right. The place had charm. The food (mine anyway) was delicious. The service could have definitely been better. The one server didn't exactly have a packed restaurant to serve and she could have written our orders down instead of trying to memorize them which she failed at. I would give this place a try but also give yourself at least an hour just in case the service falls short. read more

A wonderful surprise to find a Jamaican spot in town - do yourself a favor and get the oxtail that melts off the bone and the red snapper for a big portion. Each of these jamaican entree's comes with a heavy portion of seasoned rice and beans, plantains, salad. My only critique is that I wish there were more of the entree ordered! We got four to share but felt like most of the meal is side stuff rather than the entree of focus. Though, the rice/beans/plantains were great - fluffy and flavorful rice, tender beans, thin plantains sliced lengthwise with a satisfying chew and subtly salty/sweet without too much added to it - no glaze, so not one of those honey-glazy plantains if that's what you're looking for, but satisfying nonetheless. OXTAIL *** Melts off the bone with a great savory sauce that gets all over the rice! Our favorite item of what we ordered. It falls apart in your mouth and the sauce is glazy/sticky, sweet, salty, savory. RED SNAPPER Comes with a whole fish on the bone - the picture doesn't do it justice - but this was probably the entree that gave you the MOST as far as the main item of interest. If you're not used to eating a whole fish (bone and head and everything) this may put you off but trust me it's worth it; it was very tender and came with some okra salad on top that was warm and captured the fish flavor. FRIED CHICKEN Tastes like regular fried chicken, was tender enough (not the juiciest I've had) but the sauce on top makes it much better and is deeply flavorful; would have liked more with it as well! JERK CHICKEN Jerk Chicken I've had before was much spicier so if you're looking for a milder version then this is it for you. Still pretty well seasoned; tender enough. A staple as far as Jamaican food is concerned and parents who can't tolerate spice loved it. CLAM CHOWDER How do you not get clam chowder when visiting cape cod? we stopped in for brunch on a sunday close to noon. we were seated right away. we ordered a couple juices; nectar mango and ginger guava, both were very tasty. our dishes were the meat lover's omelette and a breakfast supreme. both dishes came out nice and hot. we both liked that they didn't over salt their food, such a great thing since typically the restaurant industry just over salts everything. we would definitely stop by the next time we're in the area. parking is plentiful in front, side, and back of the restaurant. read more

Party of 2 @ 5:00pm for take-out After time at the beach my hubby and I were driving back to the resort and contemplating where to stop and pick up some dinner. Coming up to Island Cafe we decided to stop and check out the menu. It was great that the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus were all on display in the restaurant lobby area. We were hungry and the restaurant smelled yummy, the prices were very reasonable, so we decided to walk in and ask if we could order food to go. We were welcomed by a very sweet young lady and she invited us to have a seat at the bar and handed us each a menu. While we perused the menu, we were offered a drink or a glass of water. We had just had some drinks on the way over so were good. We knew we wanted clam chowder and the entree was easy to select: pineapple chicken with steamed rice sounded delicious. We placed our order and hung out at the bar watching sports on the tv and of course checking our phones. We waited about 15 minutes for our food to be prepared, paid, and we were on our merry way back to our hotel to enjoy our dinner. Both the chowder and the chicken were delicious! Who DOESNT KNOW HOW TO FRY EGGS?! Basic Frying Eggs! The eggs were showered in oil, you could not taste the flavor of the eggs. The Grits were from a box of "QUICK" Grits, with a MICROWAVE cooking time of 5 minutes, with STALE cheddar cheese on top. The WHOLE-WHEAT TOAST, was STALE BREAD. The CORNBEEF HASH was from cans, that were later fried in a skillet. The WORST BREAKFAST IVE EVER HAD, in my LIFE! NEVER AGAIN. It was AGAINST my better judgement, as I know where to get the BEST BREAKFAST on the CAPE, but chose to try a restaurant where I already had a BAD report (not posted) on a prior meal. I AM A HUGE SUPPORTER of Small neighborhood businesses. This one needs a NEW CHEF. Overall the staff was good, except they took a while to check on patrons. "Hospitality 101". The Ambience is good, although I rushed out before checking out the restroom facilities. No pictures this time; they were such nice accommodating people, I never wanted to even hint, at being a food critic, but this was BAD! Againe, who screws up EGGS?! Who serves orange juice with ICE? Primarily Tropicana (supermarket bought, or bulk shopping). The PRICE was OUTRAGEOUS! In the tourism industry it's called "Tourist Trap"; the Cape during the summer has a vibrant tourism industry, from housing bed & breakfast to hotels, air bnb, Vrbo etc. Accommodations are usually booked way in advance, so the "Tourist Trap", is not as lucrative and vibrant. However restaurants can trap the tourist like lobster traps, during season. The eggs washed in oil, might have been "Stale Oil", cause I had diarrhea all day, or rather from 11AM when I had breakfast until 4:30PM EST. These were some of the NICEST MOST HOSPITABLE PEOPLE (except for my waitress, who seemed unhappy). These were some subpar service of my waitress, has NOTHING TO DO with my FOOD REVIEW. Maybe it wasn't a good day for the waitress. I doubt it that she told the chef, to shower my eggs with oil, so I couldn't taste the flavor, or serve me microwaved quick grits. It took a while for me to get my meal, but I have no evidence that my waitress tried to sabotage me read more

I stopped into Island Cafe & Grill for breakfast while waiting for my car to be repaired nearby and am I glad I did. Who knew we have such a gem of an establishment right on Iyannough Road across from the airport. It's easy to overlook this place as the ongoing construction on Iyannough continues to burden all of the businesses in this area. But if you miss it you are losing out. I ordered the "Wicked Breakfast" and it was plentiful, delicious, and very reasonably priced. Natasha was a very nice professional and engaging waitress. I will definitely be back to try some of their authentic Jamaican cuisine for lunch and dinner. We just found out about this Jamaican owned spot. Immediately, we drove over for lunch. The owner is delightful. She is from Mo Bay and has such a pleasant welcoming way of engaging her guests. We had a nice chat as I waited for our take out. I ordered steamed snapper and my daughter chose rice and peas. Everything is cooked to order and was still hot when we got home, 20 minutes later. Food is very good. I loved the fried plantains. My steamed fish was good. It's hard to find fresh snapper on Cape Cod so I set the bar a bit to adjust for that but I did enjoy the fish.
