    Beer battered halibut tacos
    Thu D.

Cute place to have some food and enjoy the view, especially on a nice day. Drinks were good, but not very strong. I ordered the beer battered halibut tacos. The fish was delicious and fresh, but the tacos needed some salsa for extra flavor. The staff were very friendly.

I'm Hooked!! What a fun vibe here, you feel like you're on a tropical vacation there if the weather is cooperating! I have just recently moved back to Vancouver/Portland area after 20 years in Arizona- I don't recall ever being here before and I'm bummed to have missed out until now! To make it up I have already revisited- so, 2 visits in a month is a pretty good indicator that I really enjoy the place. Staff is super friendly, seating can be a wait especially at peak times and weekends. Parking is also pretty difficult at times- because it's popular! I loved the Pina Colada there, my friend had a Moscow Mule and both were perfectly prepared. First, visit we shared the Lobster wrap and thank goodness- it's huge! Second time I dash the Fired Calamari and my friend had the BBQ Pork Tacos- we both loved our meals. What always makes it so special is the views of the marina and boats on the water. It definitely makes you feel very Jimmy Buffet going to Margaritaville!!

Bloody Maria & Bloody Mary - which is which is anyone's guess... but both were delish!

Food - 5 stars (especially the onion petals) Server - 4 stars (would've gotten 5, but we think he mixed up our drinks even though we asked) Ambiance - 5 stars until the guy docked next to us started up his loud, stinky boat Drinks - 5 stars for flavor but since we couldn't tell which Bloody had tequila & which had vodka, they must not have had much in them, but the flavor was great. Other - 3 stars for the girl who came by asking to take our plates away while I was still eating.

Still worth a trip during their online season from May to fall. P cleaned his plate of clam strips and onion petals ($3.50 upgrade) and the halibut & chips were as good as I remember from 2025. I learned my lesson and ordered a cup instead of a bowl of chowder to dip the fries in. Their food is so good but too rich to indulge more than once a year. We'll be back in 2027!

Such a cool spot! This whole area is just totally unique, but a tropical themed restaurant & bar on the water is great. Especially in summer. Around 5 pm on a Saturday you can expect a wait but all the employees were positive and friendly. They had all the roll up doors open to the water and outdoor seating, so even sitting inside felt like being outside. Our waiter was great, especially given our three grumbly children that had spent all day on the water and were exhausted. I ordered a spicy blood mary, popcorn shrimp & the onion straws (whatever they call em) and the pulled pork sandwich (which I shared with the husband who ordered the cubano). Everything was ready fairly quickly, we truly didn't have to wait too long. Popcorn shrimp was just ok, kind of the generic solid breading. The onion was better but wish there had been more (we had 9 people afterall). Pulled pork was good but it need the BBQ sauce, as it was a touch dry. The cubano was the best of everything, lots of flavor. And the bread wasn't so thick or tough that was too much work. My drink was very good but I'm not entirely sure there was alcohol in it. This is a cool spot and worth a try.

Beautiful harbor view with a fun coastal island vibe. Service was fast and friendly. We had the clam strips and coconut fried shrimp which were both delicious. Prices were reasonable and portions were generous. Parking did seem scarce, so I could foresee that posing a challenge on busier days. It was a little bit out of the way for us based on where we were staying but it was well worth the drive.

I like writing reviews for places like this. Seasonal restaurants come with a vibe and only a limited amount of things that they can offer and do. Makes it easy to give easy compliments. We discovered Island Cafe for the first time this past summer. Hot day, been at Rooster all day, exhausted and needed a drink and dinner... why not end the day on the River? Island Cafe is a floating restaurant on the Columbia River. It holds a great deal of people, but expect to wait. That's part of the charm. They're busy. They're always busy. Doesn't matter when you go, they're busy. Staff is always seemingly smiling and friendly. Be ready to give your order fast, everyone wants a table and they're always working through their wait list. The drinks are just fine. Nothing special. They usually show up in a timely fashion. They do well at both cocktails and martinis, I've had both (of course!) Food is pretty solid. This is a glorified bar but their chef does right by their patrons. I've had a chicken sandwich that was good and one of their salads. I really like the salad. It was huge and filling. The place is pricey. You're gonna pay for a floating restaurant on the River... but you're also floating while you eat! Enjoy the experience! We always love coming back. Looking forward to next Summer!

Today i&my dog visited Island Cafe. The place was extremely busy and we waited almost 2 hours for a table, but honestly, it was worth it. We came here to relax by the river, enjoy the beautiful view, and have a peaceful time -- and the atmosphere truly delivered that. The food was excellent. The Spicy Chicken Wings were absolutely perfect -- crispy, flavorful, and not overly salty at all. The Lobster Salad Stuffed Avocado was yummy too. Everything we ordered was delicious. I also want to compliment the serving staff today. Even though the restaurant was very busy, they were attentive, friendly, professional, and had great service mind throughout our visit. I really appreciated their hard work and kindness.(Thank you Rachael) Unfortunately, our experience ended on a sad note. As we were walking out of the restaurant, there was a dog underneath a table located along the exit walkway. We did not even notice the dog was there until it suddenly jumped out and attacked my dog. It shocked and scared me very much. I am a-dog lovers, and i forgive the dog itself -- animals can react unexpectedly sometimes. However, the owner was not following the restaurant's leash policy, which is clearly stated by the restaurant. My dog behaved very well the entire time: calm, quiet, and never aggressive toward anyone. I hope the restaurant can kindly remind all customers with dogs to keep them leashed and close at all times for everyone's safety and comfort. What upset me the most was that I never even received an apology from the dog owner, even though their dog initiated the attack.

On a recent work trip to Portland, I had lunch here, on the recommendation of a coworker. I was not disappointed. The place has a semi-touristy island/beach vibe with an also local cult that one might expect of Lahaina or San Diego. This makes sense, given that it's located on an upscale island (Tomahawk Island) in the Columbia river. It appears to be quite popular, as there was a substantial wait for groups. Luckily, I was lunching solo. So many seafood offerings were tempting, and I settled on the seared ahi tacos. I left off the ranch dressing, because I actually like tasting the fish. They were perfect. Service was quick and friendly. I will try to return for dinner, because the marina view, casual vibe and delicious food are just begging me to order a beer or some wine.

Very cool location! See the water. See the mountain. Even inside feels like you're sitting outside. Very busy while we were there, but bar and railing seats are open seating, so we managed to grab a couple of seats on the railing and got to look out on the water. Service was excellent! Our server, Rachel l, was great! Super sweet and honest about what to order. We had fish and chips and coconut shrimp sub onion petals for the fries. No complaints about any of it. I do wish the onion petals had been a little crispier. The sweet chili sauce that came with the shrimp was really good. Just the right amount of heat and sweet. I'm not usually a fan of tartar sauce, but I took some home with my left overs. Good stuff. Four stars because the margaritas were the best. Good but not great and I've had my fair share of margaritas. It didn't stop me from drinking it, but I'll probably try something different next time. So yeah, we'll be back.

Super cool restaurant located on the river. Great food, service and drinks. We went on a summer day and there was a wait, but wasn't too long. The building is located down on the dock so may be a challenge for some.

Ask the Community - Island Cafe

Planning a Saturday visit in early September for an 8-person birthday celebration. When are the quieter times in the afternoon to stop by?

They are busy but 2-3 pm should work. Good luck and happy birthday!

    Do you deliver?

    Unfortunately we do not deliver.

When does it open and close each year?

Hi Shannon, We usually open sometime in mid-April. We will be closing this year for the season on Saturday, October 12th.

Will they do any of the fish tacos without the batter? (Pan cooked)

So I don't know the answer but I don't see why not I'm sure if you ask they be more than happy to oblige you

When is your last open day before closing for the winter season?

    October 13th

Is there a boat ramp nearby?

I know there is one close on the Vancouver side. I live in AZ, so I am not sure the name. I know it is just east of the McMinimans that is on the River.

Is the cafe small dog friendly as all the seating is outside?

There is indoor and outdoor seating and it is very small dog friendly outside. I've brought my small pup with me before and they were very kind and welcoming!

This is a critique, of Northport, not for their elevated cuisine or craft cocktails, & friendly staff, but rather a poor singular judgement call on behalf of manager Daniel A. Northport replaced the closure of Swift & Union restaurant, that experienced financial hardships in a pandemic. Restaurants are all about "math". Push a local away, you lose future bankable dollars spent, which in my case = lots of hard earned $. Facts; I usually came in alone, sat at their counter, plugged in my AirPods & watched design shows, or researched new music for my upcoming shows. On 3 separate occasions I brought friends with me. I admired the decor of Northport, because of having 30+ years experience in the design field. Upon my first visit, I met Gabriel, who was a server, also studying architecture, which resonated with me. After a few more visits he gave me his number & friended me on IG. I also met Nikayla another server I can't say enough good things about! After talking with me, she brought me a crystal rock on my next visit to Northport.she believed stimulates creativity, I placed her gift on my fireplace mantel. . Finally in addition to meeting a talented elixir crafter Caitlin, I met an older gentleman employed there as a bartender who invited me to come down and see Lorna B. perform. . I accepted his invitation, he was off shift & I sat with him at the counter. It was nice to see Northport bringing in live music entertainment, became a new reason to come back. When Lorna took a break, I complimented her vocals & song selections that evening. I showed Lorna two photos of relevant connections on my phone, from my associations with similar jazz & blues performers, including Mel B. (Rialto's Jack London) & Donna K.)Portland's waterfront blues festival. A couple days later, I came back from celebrating Seattle Pride wearing a Pride T-shirt I, stopped by Northport....at the podium entrance I was greeted by server Nikayla. She was telling me about going hiking to Silver Falls, while having this exchange, their manager Daniel approached & informed me that "I was effectively no longer "welcome into Northport." Daniel's explanation was that the performer Lorna may have felt uneasy? Many performers get approached either for patrons that make a song request, or adding tips to their tip jar, or any relatable exchange. Many collaborations happen when stories are shared amongst fellow artists. I was taken a back, to say the least. How is this offensive? Would it be perceived differently, if I was a woman of color, chatting with her as one musician to another? Doubtful, which lends itself that this is reverse discrimination, as I am white openly gay woman in PDX. If I was given any opportunity to discuss this, with owners of Northport, I would welcome that. Many neighborhoods in Portland have seen gentrification, particularly in N & NE Portland. I cannot control how others perceive me, as I merely mentioned my connections to similar musicians such as Mel B., & Donna K., both whom I know that do jazz and blues music in Portland . my attempts to create viable connections, share my love of music in our community as mutual contributors, is all this was. In this city, when you are treated in this manner by a manager, to be made to feel you are unwelcome, be careful, because one never knows the people they know. My trip to NYC, I met with celebrity chef Eric R. any foodie knows his relation to the late Anthony B. Point being, I have many connections w/ business owners, celebrity chefs, designers, artists ,other foodies, city council members, & Portland based musicians. For a relatively new Kenton business that claims to be all about hospitality, it saddens me, that one singular person, Daniel A., would treat a long time member of the Kenton community with utter contempt. Disdain? Add insult to injury Daniel claims that other staff members may have felt uneasy. Really? Like the one who gave me his phone number, or another one giving me a crystal & discussing hiking plans, or the other one who invites me back, danced with me & bought my cocktail during Lorna's performance? These facts do not add up, I was shamed & treated with a knee jerk reaction, even after I suggested we revisit this after some time has passed to be met with a harsh NO, in front of their staff member happily conversing with me right in front of him. I was mistreated & belong to 3 protected classes under Federal & Oregon laws. This is a prime example of how owners, (Davide & Tamara B.) hire someone like Daniel A. & treat local talented residents poorly, that inevitably will spend their dollars elsewhere. Bottom line. Advocate for equality, & inclusion. This business will attempt to justify poor actions.

My partner's burger was ok (you can get a better one at several different restaurants in Vancouver) and my "Aztec" salad was extremely underwhelming. It consisted of romaine lettuce (majority stem and very little leafy greens), thin tortilla strips, a tiny amount of avocado, tomato, a tiny amount of black beans and corn and came dressed in a chipotle dressing. There were no jalapeños or cheese in sight and you REALLY had to search for the black beans, corn and avocado, as there were barely any. This reminded me of a taco salad you would order at a Dennys or other cheap diner where you are expecting to be underwhelmed, yet the price tag for this salad was nearly $19 and didn't even have any protein unless you were willing to pay another $6-$12.50 for it. This was literally the worst taco salad I have ever had and it's a pretty simple dish to mess up. You can get a much better quality taco salad with adequate avocado, black beans and corn that also includes pulled pork at Seize the Bagel for $10.50. Maybe for drinks and the view this place is great, but don't waste your money on their overpriced and underwhelming food.

When we walked in though we were pleasantly supplies with the ambiance the food also was pretty good we were happy with most of what we got, Steak David was to die for the spaghetti with meat sause did not disappoint. DO NOT get the meat martini it was GRoSS. I am a dirty gin martini with blue cheese olives girl through and through but this thing was gross. The Manhattan and Cosmo were both good. The one thing we would have given this 5 stars would have been the service. When we arrived the host was standing outside picking up chairs. He then proceeded to have a five minute conversation with another guest while we were just waiting to be seated when we finally receded we requested a different table and he seemed to bothered. Our waitresses was beyond friendly and helpful with selections BUT everything took far to long. We did ask for a rush on the spaghetti for our starving child and it came out in a flash. The drinks were verrrry slow the check was very slow. Despite the slow service, we would totally come here again

The toxic smell of cleaning and burning off a grill during lunch hour had a lot to be said for the overall experience. The food has gone downhill 100% We became ill over the next couple hours after trying to eat what used to be fabulous eggs benedict. We called in hopes of talking to management about our experience and were assured that we would get a call back. We did not get a call back. We did not get comped at all whatsoever. And we will never darken their door again.
