Delectable and fresh describes their menu. The smoothies are compacted with fruits and I'm not sure if they put any ice in there as the style differs from Jamba Juice. I feel like I'm drinking fruit! I typically get the Mediterranean Platter or Chicken Pita. There's always more food than you think you'll get. I always end up getting 2 meals out of the platter, a good choice if you're torn between gyro/chicken. The chicken pita has large chunks of juicy goodness - I'd request the sauce on the side as it starts dripping through the pita towards the end of the meal. Let me start this review by saying I hate smoothies. So if you're looking for a good "smoothie" place to try, I can't give you any advice as to whether this place is one you want to hit up or not. The food, however, is definitely worth a detailed review. Looking around, you can tell the owner strives to make this commercial location a neighborhood spot. He has succeeded - it is a relaxed, order at the counter restaurant where children, teenagers, and adults eat and relax after work and school. There are pictures all over the walls of local high school soccer teams, student artwork, etc... Come back for a mere second time (or maybe even your first) and the people at the counter, especially the owner, will make you feel like a regular. And the food? My friends all get the chicken pita. Actually, to say they "get" the chicken pita is a bit of an understatement, they obsess/live by/order 2-3 times a week a chicken pita. Not because it is like nothing they have ever had before, it is just a good, relatively healthy meal that you never get sick of. I used to shamelessly order the pesto pasta w/ chicken, until one of my friends informed me that pesto is bad for me. Whatever, I still order it. The seasoning on the fries is really good. I placed my order online to be picked up. When we got back to the hotel it was discovered part of our order was missing. The items they didn't forget to pack tasted good, however it was a very small amount considering each entry was over $10. When we called back about ten after nine hoping to at least have our bill adjusted, someone answered and just said "We are closed." I suppose had we eaten at the restaurant and not gotten all of our food order we could've quickly spoken up and hopefully all would be corrected and I would give them another star for the tasty food (falafel was great). I really hate when places have such great reviews, because I get my expectations really, really high. It's a double edge-sword, it is. We came here for lunch, right before the rush. It was pretty quiet, and maybe because it was Spring break, but there were TONS of kids in here. I know that this is something that is out of control, but it didn't make the experience any better. It was our first time, and I knew that you were supposed to order at the counter. We got called over to the cashier at the end, and there were no menus to look at? When I asked for one, he looked a little annoyed as if I were supposed to know what I wanted when I walked it. I followed Yelp's advice, and I tried the grilled chicken pita. The pita was really good, and really flavorful. I wish the ratios were a bit more proportional, the salad to meat to pita seemed a little disproportionate. I wanted to try a smoothie, but with the bad counter experience, I was hesitant to go up again...and the lunch rush line was not looking like fun to stand in. I do have to say their women's restroom was clean, although they had a light out. I don't know if this place would be my first choice to visit again, but I definitely would like to go back again. read more

Working near a client, I decided to venture out to the unknown and stumbled upon this establishment. I agree with Emily W. as well as the other fellow yelpers; "Chicken Pita all the way!" They were serving a lunch special, Chicken Pita with your choice of Smoothie. I opted for the Iron Man. I believe it was Strawberry, Banana and yougurt. The person taking our order suggested it. After spending an hour eating, talking and watching ESPN on their flat screen TV (and getting all the updates on the NFL draft), this place was worth the $10 for the meal. What a hidden gem! Located right across the street from my YogaOne class, I was itching for a fresh smoothie and bite to eat. The "smoothie" in the name grabbed our attention so my friend and I headed on over. A casual and clean order at the counter spot with open inside and outdoor seating. Huge selection of smoothies with great juices (e.g. coconut, papaya) and vanilla yogurt - which adds a great texture and taste to them. Menu selection is good - burgers, salads, pita sandwiches and even larger plate entrees. Some items are pricier (~$15), but if the quality is the same throughout - don't mind it! I had the Island Oasis smoothie with a Chicken Caesar Salad, friend ordered a pita sandwich. Food and smoothies came out fresh and fast. My initial expectations upon entering were low, but lesson learned on not judging a book by its cover. LOVED my salad and the fact that it came pre-mixed (avoided the usual hassle of tossing the salad and spillage over the bowl). The chicken was grilled and peppered perfectly, the dressing had an added spice to it and best of all the salad wasn't drenched with dressing but lightly covered. The lettuce was fresh and crisp - butter, garlic croutons topped everything off nicely. Decent portion too, I was comfortably full post smoothie and salad, which isn't the usual for most my "healthier" meals. Great meal at a good price - I'll be back! Heavenly toasted bagels with melty peanut butter, one fantastic falafel pita, and delicious smoothies, all a bit overpriced, make this a great place for a snack, breakfast, or lunch. Smoothie Island is an established eatery in the Memorial area great for breakfast or lunch. My first visit was after a doctor's appointment in the area and I ordered a toasted whole-wheat bagel with peanut butter and a smoothie. Needless to say, I was amazingly surprised with how delicious it was. The bagel was toasted just perfectly and the peanut butter was applied right after the bagel was taken off the heat so it just melted through and around the bread. I also decided to switch it up a bit after always defaulting to the peanut butter bagel and ordered a falafel pita on the menu, which was fantastic! Who knew this place had such a wonderful variety of different offerings? My only two gripes are that the lady usually working the counter on the weekday mornings seems pretty rude or condescending unless you're a regular, and the prices all seem about a dollar too high. Come here for either a healthy or deliciously indulgent meal, all in a casual atmosphere at a longtime neighborhood favorite. read more

This place is a little hidden gem. Part of it I think is that their name is a little misleading. It's as if the "grille" part is an afterthought. The dining room is a little too cramped. The service is friendly but not lightning speed. My first trip to Smoothie Island was in February of 2011 and I just wanted to say "why can't we go to Yia Yia Mary's?!?!?". I'm very particular about service quality and the Pappas Restaurants always get it right. I simply didn't want to go anywhere else. However, my skirt was blown up and my panties were in a twist by the time I left Smoothie Island. The wraps are delicious, the hummus rocks my world, the tabouli is refreshing, and the falafel is just divine. This is now my absolute favorite Mediterranean restaurant in Houston. Based on the wonderful reviews here and the restaurant's proximity to my new office, I was excited to try Island Grill today. Since it seemed like the best place to start, I ordered the Chicken Pita and a side of fries to go, and after a brief wait, headed back to my office. When I opened my box, I wasn't quite sure where to start. The pita was wrapped in paper, and the overall size was huge. I tried to lift it by the paper to get a grip on it, but it ripped due to being wet, I assume from steam or grease. I was not able to find both sides of the pita, so I decided to start with the fries. They were lightly fried, and had a light dusting of red seasoning. I was expecting Cajun, but it had very little flavor. Probably mostly paprika. They were fairly good. Not enough salt for my taste, but I understand, this place is focused on healthy. So after a few fries, I decided to pick off some of the massive amount of lettuce on the pita to see if I could find the bottom and pick it up. Alas, it was wet and mushy, so I figured I would just eat it with a fork. I opened the package with the plastic utensils, and to my great surprise - a knife, a spoon, and NO FORK! Who packages plastic utensils without a fork??? I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume I just got a defective package. So, my thoughts on the Chicken Pita: 1) too much lettuce; 2) mushrooms and onions were way undercooked - almost raw. I prefer these veggies sautéed; 3) the chicken appeared to be quality cuts of meat, but there was very little seasoning or flavor. Much too bland compared to other Mediterranean restaurants where I have eaten; 4) the pita was so soggy that I only ate one small piece of it. Big disappointment as I was really looking forward to some pita, since that's what I had ordered; 5) and finally, the sauce was pretty tasty. I had asked for it on the side hoping I would get back to the office with a dry pita. So much for that idea. In spite of a pretty disappointing meal, I will try them again, because there are just so few places to eat within walking distance of my office. But next time I will eat in, and I will get a platter so that I can actually eat the pita. read more

The food is incredibly fresh and you get decent portions here. I can always relied on them for healthy and good food. The breakfast is awesome here especially the blueberry pancakes. Ok so that's not really healthy but it's so darn good that I will splurge. My other favorites are the chicken pita and the chicken teriyaki. This is an excellent spot for lunch, whether you want to eat healthy (kabobs and tabouleh) or hamburgers and fries (not so healthy)! We had the Hanover platter (comes with chicken or beef, I got the mixed) mixed in with mushrooms, red onions and walnuts, all laid over a hummus base and tabouleh and avocado on the sides.We also got the chicken kabob plate and we ordered fries and hummus as sides. Everything was absolutely delicious! Great flavor and good texture to the grilled vegetables as well. Definitely one of the better lunch spots in the immediate area. Since Island Smoothie is close to my office, I've been quite a few times--it's one of the few places that people can agree on. You stand in line, order/pay at the counter, then sit down with a number and they bring your food to you. It's usually pretty packed, but I've always found a table by the time my food was ready, and the service is usually pretty fast. The food is varied, but the focus is on salads, pita sandwiches, and other healthy fare; there are multiple options for vegetarians, pescatarians, etc. For those looking to indulge, I recommend the pita pizzas, which are delicious. My coworkers like the smoothies, but I think they're cloyingly sweet (caveat: I think that about pretty much every restaurant smoothie). Cons: The restaurant is located in a very crowded strip mall where all the spots are assigned by business, so it can be nearly impossible to find anywhere to park. read more

I really had high hopes for this place. I really, really did I promise! Unfortunately I jussssst idkkkkk everyone. So, first of all parking for this place is ridiculous. Welp, to my surprise there wasn't parking anywhere and where there was parking it was reserved for the other stores. Sucks, right? Any who, after about 10 minutes of going back and forth I found a spot right in the front of the restaurant. The outside set up is really homey and cute. It has that backyard patio pool look. However, walking inside of Island Grill can be a tad claustrophobic. The tables are really cramped together because its a fancy looking hole in the wall. Any who, to my surprise I found a nice little table for two by the window that the busboy was cleaning. I snagged it really quick for my guest and I. Now to the food. In order to place your meal order you have to walk up to the cramped front counter/ bar. I decided to just get a Gyro Pita with NO onions. It took about 15 minutes to get my food. appearance wise it looked plentiful. Although, once I bit into my gyro it was just, bland :'( They stuffed it full of tomatoes, lettuce, and even the onions that I did not ask for -__- there might have been about 3 or 4 pieces of lamb meat and the tzatziki sauce was only poured on one side. I did finish my meal because I don't believe in wasting food, however, I was a tad disappointed. They claim it's Mediterranean food but uhhh its pretty looking and that's about it. It's a good quick place to eat. There are plenty of places to grab breakfast in the area. I eat here at least three times a week because of employee personality. So, I ignore the times they get my order (and the order of my friends) wrong. I wish they had a larger selection of breakfast tacos. The lunch is very tasty.
