I'll admit, I don't know much about Turkish food, and the one time I've had it (at a better known Turkish restaurant in Edgewater), it was nothing to write about. I found Istanbul Borek & Kebab by accident. It's located on a quiet side street off the main road in CP. When the awning is down, the restaurant looks quaint and exotic. There are always people enjoying a leisurely meal at the tables outside the front. I wanted to join them! The inside of the restaurant is elegant, and made me feel like I was in a nice cafe in Istanbul. The service was very friendly and attentive. Yes, there was a small language barrier with a waiter, but plenty of other English-speaking staff around. Not a problem for me. The food....insert chef's kiss. OMG. They were cooking for their lives in that kitchen! There is so much going on in that menu, I didn't know what to choose. I let the waiter suggest something for me, and they did not disappoint! Succulent, juicy, and well-seasoned kebab and adana. Flavorful rice and veggies. I even ate the salad, which I don't normally do! I also let the waiter pick a dessert for me, because I had trouble choosing. He brought me kazandibi, a creamy dessert similar to flan. Sooo GOOD, especially followed by a Turkish coffee. Nothing spectacular. We came across this place because we realized they finally opened up Lawton Ave. my husband grew up in Cliffside Park and being able to go down this street was a shock to him. Anyway, with the new condos built, we drove through here to check out the place and found this restaurant. We're always down to try something new and so we came here before meeting up with some friends. The restaurant is big...with the left side that acts as a bakery that holds allllll sorts of deliciousness, the back wall an open kitchen, and the rest of the place a restaurant. We were seated right away but the service was definitely lacking... Our waiter took our orders and the food came at a decent time..however, the wait staff started to wind down once you get your food...no one really comes and asks you if everything is ok, what else you needed, or to refill waters. We had to wave someone down to get our check which look a while and it took even longer with the credit card.. While they were friendly, the efficiency wasn't really what I was expecting and I was hoping for better. The food wasn't too bad actually... I ordered a chicken kebab which came with rice and salad and it was grilled amazingly. It was crispy on the outside with nice and juicy on the inside..everything about the dish was great. The good part is that it wasn't an overwhelmingly large plate like some places I've been to. This was the perfect portion, so definitely hats off to the chef. We didn't order dessert even if we wanted to because we didn't know how long it would take to get it to us. I would definitely rate the food at a 4/5 but not the service..service I'd give about a 2.5/5. We stopped in just for desserts after glowing recommendations from friends. My husband picked some baklavas and other treats. I asked if they had any gluten free desserts, and the first counter person didn't understand what I was saying. A second person comes to help but gets distracted with something else and then finally a third person come to help me. I asked him again if there were any desserts that were gluten free and I was directed to a rice pudding, almond pudding and chocolate pudding. I ask again if there's no wheat flour, cake base or anything similar. And I am assured that there's nothing of the sort and it's gluten free. I take the chocolate pudding and rice pudding home. What I liked most about this spacious restaurant is the old-world atmosphere they have achieved, reminiscent of Turkey. The kebabs were quite tasty, as well as the accompanying bread, salad and rice. Bakery products and cakes are sold at a bakery coun. Kebabs priced at $12-17 are not particularly expensive. They seem to add a service charge of around 15% to the bill. Outstanding service and friendly staff! The food is always amazing and consistent! Don't skip on the borek from the bakery which is absolutely delicious. The kofta was juicy and such a great balance with the cacik and the eggplant appetizer we ordered. The chicken cubes were flavorful and of course the falafel was the absolute favorite of the table. It looks like a light yellow gelatin based pudding but it's rice powder base pudding with blanched almonds , sugar and milk . Tasted mildly sweet with a hint of almonds. Before there was a huge selection of Turkish restaurants in the area, this was my go-to spot. The lahmacun and tomato soup are to die for. The restaurant itself is very clean. However, this spot does underdeliver when it comes to certain menu items. I don't know why but I feel that the meat items such as The breakfast platter when compared to other breakfast platters from comparable Turkish places in Cliffside Park and Paterson/Clifton could be better. Also, I feel like there is no consistency when it comes to the food. Sometimes a menu item is the best it can be, but other times it is not. The manemman dish is just so perfect in this cold weather. Perfectly mixed egg with tomato sauce and other spices to create this mild spicy dish. I absolutely enjoyed it with my turkish tea. We also tried the egg with potato and mozzarella which my husband liked better. The pastrami was good too, not spicy but herby in taste. We tried some of the sweets out in front and I should say every thing we tried was good though I did feel they got very sweet by the next day. We always come here for breakfast. I like everything they serve but this time su boregi was outstanding! I also noticed they got a few new servers. Service was good then, it's perfect now. You feel hidden smiles behind the mask. There is one important thing I'd like to share with owner: I understand and strongly agree service charge for large parties. We got the $14.95 breakfast platter that came with sausage, boiled egg, tomatoes, cheeses, olives, cucumbers, cherry sauce and honey and cream sauce. We also ordered babaghanouge and a pastry filled with beef. We both really enjoyed the babaghanouge and the beef pastry. The platter was nice too but we aren't into cheese so it was not our cup of tea. Our food came with fresh warm bread and it went so well with the rest of the food. Everything tasted fresh and good and the restaurant itself was very clean. The food is not what it once was -- and we are disappointed following our two most recent trips. The lahmacun and patlican saltasi (smoked eggplant) are still very good but the adana kebab and calamari were awful. The calamari were deep fried to death and chewy -- not what Turkish calamari is all about. Even the mayo sauce that goes with was thin and tasteless. The Adana was grisly and rubbery -- like it was previously cooked, then frozen and reheated -- not ground and grilled fresh. The pide is still good and I like the space a lot -- just don't trust all of the menu anymore. Also, a large staff turnaround is evident and a quiet (read: empty) room at dinner time on a Friday night, in a foodie town, is never a good sign. read more

The vibe, although casual, is unique and makes you feel like you're in Turkey. Its a popular spot with the local Turkish community in Cliffside Park - you can find both young and old sitting and socializing and watching the Turkish soccer league if it's on. Having explored much of the menu I can safely say you can't go wrong with anything from their tea and Turkish coffee, lahmacun, soups, kebabs, Turkish breakfast, and of course borek.
