Had the BEST experience at the Garden Grove Ivy Endodontic Location- from start to finish. Receptionist was incredibly helpful & via phone call was able to tell me how much I would pay out of pocket after giving my insurance info. Most places won't quote you until you come in for an X-ray and consultation. I needed the work done asap & receptionist was able to get back to me in 2 days and schedule appt the next morning. Was nervous for the root canal procedure but everything, EVERYTHING was smooth and perfectly done. Dr. took his time and paid attention to detail. I was well attended and well pleased. read more

The first time I came to Ivy Endodontic Group for root canal, I met Doctor Cary Syamken I told the assistant that he is very nice, he explained to me that if I wanted to save my tooth, he will do root canal, or if I wanted, he will pull that tooth out, because this tooth is located in my mouth is far and its not too important for me when I chew the foods. I came to see Dr Syamken for a root canal and I could not have been more pleased with him and the office staff. Dr Syamken made sure to thoroughly explain the procedure and made sure I did not feel a thing throughout. The front desk staff and his assistant were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and did a great job helping me with questions about my insurance plan. This office was recommended by another dentist. This is one of the worst dental office w/customer service. They claimed they would call back w/my ins coverage twice. With today's technology, the cell phone list will show if anyone calls or not. The office claimed that they called on different days. I checked both days on my phone logs, I did not get a call from them. What a lying receptionist she also screws up the appointments. With poor customer service like that how good can this dental office be? I think something is not right here. The office has only one-star and 5-star reviews. I think someone is paying people for 5 stars to balance all the negative reviews. This tells u how professional this office handles patients. I'm glad I didn't even step into this office. My experience at Ivy Endodontic in Irvine with Dr. Mary Um was amazing. Dr. Um not only explained what she saw with my previous root canals, she did it in a friendly way. She also told me about one of my teeth that I had noticed always looked different from my other teeth and told me why it was that way, without me asking. Dr. Um is not only knowledgeable about her field, but she seems passionate about it, which shows in her interaction with patients. The office was also very calm and well-run. I love that they explained my fees and all information prior to my visit and at the beginning of my visit so that I knew what might happen even before I arrived. This review has been long overdue, but hey! better late than never! Anyways, I came for my initial visit in dec 22 and it was determined that I needed a root canal (among other things) after I had an x-ray done.. I have to say that I have seen the reviews talking about the extra charges and yes, it is a little frustrating because I had already had an x-ray done at the dental office that sent me here, but nevertheless I still had to get this one done and it cost 200$ on top of my earlier charged amount. During the consultation the dentist explained to me my options and he was so detailed. A lot of dentists these days lack ethics and I feel like they are really just trying to put you on the most expensive plan/solution, and suck as much money as they can, out of you. Now to the procedure itself, the root canal was done by Cary Craig Syamken. It took about two-three hours. Now, I have the pain tolerance of a baby, hence why I hate coming to the dentist, I hate my jaw being open for a long period of time, I hate being numbed! Aaaarrrggghhh!!! I hate it ALL!!!! But this was so painless, they treated me very well. I can't remember the name of his assistant but she was amazing! The procedure cost me 1516$ but i have to say that it was worth it! Also, I have been to other dentist offices for quotes on procedures and they are all around this price unless you have insurance. So yes! Highly recommend! read more

Highly, highly recommend! I was referred to Dr. Um for a root canal. To put it bluntly I have anxiety about going to any doctor therefore I was super scared about needing to have the procedure done. Dr. Um and team were so wonderful and kind to me through the whole process. No one wants to have a root canal done but if you need one this place is great. Dr. Mary Umm was an AMAZING doctor. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! She went over the whole details on my first consultation & again before the procedure. I was nervous at first but after talking to her, I felt at ease. She was gentle & constantly checking to make sure I am ok. After the procedure, she gave me her cell phone number in case if there is an emergency. She also advised me to ice my tooth & because of that I did not feel pain or have a need to take medication after the first day of surgery. What an awesome caring doctor she is! Been searching and calling lots of Endodontics clinic that has a microscope for my hubby within OC for a long time. it was not easy since I have HMO dental coverage. He was suffering years of discomfort with his previous 21 year old root canal. I was worried that we will not find a good Endodontist and if we do... it will charge us extra $$$ plus our actual copay. We were wrong! I was so bummed out from the last visit to another clinic that I asked the receptionist if she knew any Endodontic clinic with microscope in their office that will accept HMO. Voila! She gave me a card of IVY Endodontic Group. So, I called to make an appointment. So glad that they accept HMO and told us upfront what was our copay before my hubby did his procedure. By the way... I have to cancel easy 3 times due to unexpected issues once they set up an appointment to see him. Julie their receptionist that took my calls for his appointment and reappointment never gave me an attitude on the phone. Very understanding and soft spoken. When he was finally available to go to his appointment... then Covid-19 happened. We waited 2 months after they were available to see patients. His copay was the exact amount listed on my insurance price list for the root canal procedure. It was a relief. My hubby was so impressed of Dr. Cary Syamken. According to him... by far was the best experience he had with an Endodontist. He was gentle on treating his infected root canal and with care. After treatment... he didn't feel any pain or discomfort whatsoever. I waited after 2 weeks to write a review from his first and 2nd procedure to see if his feedback remains the same. It is so refreshing in today's times to meet a doctor with such care and honesty. Dr. Mary Um has treated me twice because my dentist thought I might need a root canal on two separate occasions. I went to visit her and after she examined to me and took some pictures, she explained that she didn't feel I needed a root canal and one case she showed me with some very advanced x-rays they took that my sinus was swollen and it was causing my rear molar to hurt and told me to take some Sudafed and within four or five days I feel a lot better That save me over $2000 and her honesty and care is so refreshing where most doctors would just make the $2000. In addition to all this, she personally takes time to go over all the charges and my insurance to let me know what it will cost me. This made me feel very secure with such transparency. Buyer beware. Dr. Michelle K Dang at Ivy endodontics is socially inappropriate and strangely immature, questionably non-competent in her root canal assessment. Manipulative in her sales pitch. Reported her to the owner of the clinic, Dr. Kim who took no responsibility for Michelle's odd behavior at his business. Reported all of this to the insurance company to evaluate false billing, and false assessment. The cement of my crown came off, and she insisted twice on $1,130 to redo a root canal surgery where there is no indicator that there is a problem under the tooth. "Blaming" other dentists that they are incompetent and she knows better ...... even the dentist who referred me to her practice. read more

I don't hate the dentist but I've had lots of experience with bad ones. So I am very hesitant to go to the dentist, let alone an endodontist that I've only seen reviews of. I came here after a recommendation for root canal retreatment by my dentist. It's on the second floor or a building on the corner with parking in the back. My appointment was at 315pm and I arrived at 255pm to fill out all the paperwork. However, I wasn't called in for x-rays until 350pm! So expect a long wait. After x-rays, Dr. Kim came in and introduced himself and asked some background questions about my root canal. Then he had the medical assistants get more x-rays of the palate. When that was finished, Dr. Kim came in, analyzed what he saw in the x-rays with me, performed some tests of my teeth, and explained what he believed went wrong. My tooth #3 is known to have 3 canals but also a tiny 4th one that may not have been treated. He noticed sensitivity at the root canal and thus recommended retreatment, which could be done the day of. Dr. Kim was so good!!! He explained every step that he took and how it would feel. "You will feel a pinch," "that is normal," "this has proven to lead to the best outcome," "does it hurt?" He was very knowledgeable and reassuring. Even though I had my jaw open with a bite block for like 2hrs, I was at ease knowing that Dr. Kim was taking care of it. I highly recommend him! read more

Heed the warnings about them charging you with additional fees and not being transparent about their prices. I went in for an assessment, ended up not needing to do a root canal procedure. I only had to pay for the visit itself, which I did. Ended up with an extra $200 bill and a price breakdown that called my original visit payment a "thank you" payment. I'm very shocked with how unprofessional this place is in terms of their billing, I definitely do not recommend them. Super bummed to have to write such a bad review, but if I saw a review like this while I was considering this place, I wouldn't have come here, and would've found another endodontist to go to. So, a little about me.. I have a huge fear of the dentist.. my last dentist was very unsympathetic to pain, and never, not once, tried to get to know more about me (even after being there for years and years). Whenever I would tell her about pain, she said that she simply couldn't numb me more than what she already did, and asked me to tough it out anyways. Even if I would cry or have panic attacks, it just seemed like I was more of a burden than someone who was hurting. While I have a wonderful primary dentist now, that dental fear and anxiety is still a huge, huge part of me. So, now, a little about my appointment with this center.. It started off okay, I guess. The front staff signed me in and gave me paperwork, then were pretty much done talking to me. Which, I guess was fine. I was led back by a dental assistant, got some xrays with her done, and when my doctor came in, he listened to my history with this tooth and said, "so, it's just a pretty straightforward root canal, then". I felt fairly relieved, because while I've never had a root canal, I've been reading that a lot of people with dental anxiety felt fine during the process, and that it was relatively painless. He got ready to do the local anasthetic, and while he was super heavy handed with it, I joked to myself that I would rather have it than not. Almost right away, maybe 15 minutes into the appointment or so, I felt an overbearing amount of pain. He saw me flinch, and kept going. After I flinched again and tightened my hold on my bear, he patted my shoulder and said, "there's an angry nerve here, and that's really hard to numb. We'll get it out soon." I nodded, but tears sprang to my eyes, and I had to really focus on keeping my breath steady. I felt so scared, alone, and like I was in so much pain. I didn't feel like I was a person to him, I felt like I was just another procedure for the day. The pain lasted almost the whole time (at least, that's what it felt like), and I felt like he didn't care enough to take the time to make sure I was comfortable. Then, once everything was done, he just got up and left the room. The assistant took another xray, and left the room without saying anything. I felt incredibly awkward, like I wasn't sure if I should go or not. After a few minutes of me just sitting there, she finally told me that I was free to go. I waved to him on the way out, and that was that. The front desk is a whole other issue, but, what can you do about that? I'm sure that he did a great job. I'm sure that he did everything that he was technically supposed to do. And I am grateful and respectful of all his hard work. But, that experience sucked, and definitely added to my dental anxiety instead of helping to lessen it. read more

Zero star. Bad costumer service. Under qualified Dr. Waste my time and money. Avoid this place, do not give them your insurance info Their staff call me too many time to reschedule and rescheduled. Try to charge me with their fee fee fee... Dr. See me only 2 min and said my teeth is hard to fix and he need more than 2 hours so he tell me to reschedule (NOTE: his staff already reschedule me twice before I can see him). Are you a specialist? If my teeth is easy to fix, I don't need to see you. I told him, I already waited 1 hour for you, why can you spare some time to fix my teeth. You know what he said? "I have a plan to do with his family" OMG I did too and a meeting which I cancel because he ask me to wait for his service. I was in so much pain and they were able to squeeze me in the same day. I have dental trauma, so you can only imagine I wasn't thrilled to go. The doctor walked me through the whole procedure. Overall, surprisingly it was fast. I wasn't sure where to park, but the street parking was fine. After I was done, somehow I ended up in the back of the building. As far as the root canal procedure-completely painless. Great as far as root canals go and I have had many! I also appreciated his honesty. He told me there was a 50/50 chance of saving the tooth. I appreciate honesty in dentistry. He wasn't just going to do the procedure and charge me money without letting me know the chance of success. Very clean professional office. Could you say it again to my good ear?" from the list of my least enjoyable words/phase, "root canal" is next to "the police are coming" By the way, don't call a friend to tell him or ask about his experience. he would just make it waaay worse. Nervously and reluctantly, I called for an appointment with Ivy Endodontic. "can you come in @ 1 today" the receptionist said I was contemplating getting drunk before noon. I waited patiently at the waiting room and was hoping for a miracle that pain on my tooth would magically disappear. But nope.. Jesus didn't find me that day. I was called in to meet Dr. Scott Howell. He asked the history of the pain. never once did he give me that 1800 DENTISTS line from the commercial "well, if you'd have visited your dentist blah blah blah". shut up fucker. he just said "we'll take care of it" during the whole time, he would explain to me what he was doing and kept asking me if I felt any pain. Here is a secret. I'm a big chicken when it comes to needles. And glad to say that I didn't feel any of the 16 novacaine shoots he gave me. Beside the sound of drilling and the smell of burn clam shells, I didn't feel a thing. The whole procedure took about an hour and a half. And my co-pay was only $106.00! I had major tooth ache from the night before and went my dentist. My dentist told me since i haven't taken care of my teeth for so long (which is true, i was scared and couldn't afford to spend thousands) I needed to see a specialist, an Endodontist. I can tell you, i was scared out of my mind. They said I have to do a root canal. from my memories, root canals are painful and the thought of drilling was giving an anxiety attack. I finally got called in. That is when I met Endodontist Jason Cho. He was nice guy and reassured me that I would not feel pain except for the pinch they have to needle my mouth with the numbing stuff. At that point, i was really doubtful.. in the past, all the dental professional i have done work with have caused me some type of pain that made me cry. So as Jason proceeded, he told me step by step what he was doing and he was right, the only pain i felt was when they had to needle me. The whole thing look about 30 mins. I didn't feel anything, just the vibrations and the awkward drilling sounds. but since i didn't feel anything, the experience was great. this experience made me trust dentists again! another great thing was after the job was done, he took xrays of the root canal and showed me what he did and explained to me what i might be feeling the next couple of days. overall, i recommend this dentist, coming from a person who hasn't seen a dentist in like over 5 yrs and was a huge chicken. read more

Don't go here! I had a root canal done here a few months ago and I had a horrible recovery. I could barely open my mouth for three weeks and I thought it was maybe just apart of the recovery process. Well today I find out the root canal was not successful ( he didn't do it right ) so now it's infected!! And today he tells me either I need the tooth pulled or surgery! WHAT?!?!?! I left devastated! I was sent to this location as they're "specialist" in hard to do root canals. I called to make an appointment, and the lady said "Come right now, and we can see you". As I am walking from my car to the office she calls me back and says "oh I forgot our assistant had an appointment, I will have to reschedule." Thirty seconds later I walk into the office and say "what? I am already here." She had me fill out info and give my insurance and told me to come back in a a few days for the soonest appointment. A few days later she calls me again to push it back another week. When I finally went there, the assistant wasn't very helpful. Although I liked the doctors, they both said they've never seen a case like mine. After all this, why am I going to a specialist if they aren't that special. I won't be going back. read more

I was recommended to Ivy Endodontic Group by my regular dentist for a root canal on a tooth.From the start dealing with Julie at the front desk was great,I had some insurance problems and she helped me on them always communicating with me.Dr Michelle Dang was great,Going over my X rays with me,giving me options, possibility of 2 root canals, called my regular dentist to make sure they were on the same page. So 2 root canals,2.5 hours in the chair,probably the best dental experience in my 65 years. I have had implant,crowns,bridges,filings,periodontal work done Dr Dang always checking if i was OK,took X rays before she sealed everything up and on the finished product, There was no pain through the whole procedure and no pain afterwards.She is the best,if i ever have another dental surgery,i wiil return to Dr Dang.Thanks Dr Dang read more

Beautiful office building and office, friendly staff, excellent service! I went to the Garden Grove office for a consultation (didn't have any services performed). I arrived 4 minutes before my appointment time, only filled out two forms, and was seen within 5 minutes. After getting x-rays done, the endodontist, Dr. Hutchens, showed up within a few minutes. He asked me about the tooth, its history and then looked inside. We talked some more, then he very clearly gave me the prognosis of the tooth and my options. He asked if I had any questions, then thoroughly and clearly answered them. He didn't tell me what to do with my tooth, which I appreciate. He gave me my options, made sure I understood them, and left the decision up to me. If I do decide to get a root canal, I will definitely be coming here for treatment. As a bonus, the chair faces a wide window that looks over historic Main St., just like in the picture uploaded by Sophia. It's a beautiful view in a beautiful, open and airy office building. The waiting room has comfy chairs and a great magazine selection. There's also ample parking behind the building, off of Acacia. Obviously not major factors when it comes to actual endondontic treatment, but it sure makes for a great overall experience. read more

Stay away from Dr. Sampskins. I had a cavity on 1 of the molars and per another endodontist it wasn't restorable due to the cavity location up by the root and gum, but after multiple tests and like xrays, Dr. Sampskins claimed that he could possibly save the tooth, giving me false hope thinking that he could save my tooth. His office demanded that it'll cost $360 if they went in and ended up can't save it which insurance won't cover the cost due to the incomplete procedure. On the day off, I told the from office girl that I wanted to talk to him to confirm if he can really save the tooth, but he went ahead I drilled it off, not even attempting to remove the decay. The whole procedure took him like 20mins to finish and then changed me $360. For short 20mins, they made quick easy $360 just to do off my tooth. IF DR. SAMPSKINS SAYS "WE DON'T KNOW UNTIL WE GET IN" AND HE WANNA CHARGE U INCOMPLETE FEE "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE"!!! read more

dr park is terrible. he did my root canal incorrectly. avoid this place at all cost. i saved a little money in the beginning but in the end i am out my crown that i paid for and having to have the root canal redone. he also got a instrument stuck in my root he said he would include it in the report he made. i sent the report to my friends moms husband who is also a dentist and he said he never put this in the report. dr park is a liar and a terrible dentist. read more

Dr Dang is a very competent endodontist with excellent bedside manner! She has a very sweet and gentle demeanor. Oh man I was super nervous to get a root canal. I was referred by my general dentist to see Dr. Syamken for a root canal retreatment. The office manager told me that they agreed to charge me $800 for my root canal retreatment. So, I paid them $800 on my visit. Few days later, they sent a claim to my insurance company and asked for $1,095. The office manager told me later and said that they must charge me more if I am covered by insurance. They also said that they have never agreed to charge me $800. Their fee is $1,095. My question to them is that "why do they charge me on my VISA of $800" ? and why not $600 or $700 ? who is changing the story ? Me or them. The retreatment was done in a single visit. Why is the fee so expensive for a 1 hour of work. Is it $800 enough ? Nevertheless, the question I ask is that how would you feel if some one told you "How much they are going to charge you", and then told you "they never said that". I would not recommend anyone to see the endodontist in this office. Hopefully, they would make some changes if the dentists have a change to read what I wrote. read more
