It's been a while since coming to the Town Center so I decided to make a day of it. I had a 4pm appointment at the Apple Store so I arrived at 1.30 and decided to park at Target and browse stores as I walked (got steps in too!) I knew I wanted to eat at the restaurant on the corner from the Apple Store so I timed my arrival for an hour earlier. How could I forget it's called J. Alexander's. Since it's fairly early they sat me quickly and I ordered the J salad with blackened salmon. It was huge and the salmon was juicy delicious! My waitress recommended I get it blackened, she was on point. My waitress was awesome! She recommended drinks and when she saw I couldn't decide she said she'd bring a water while I looked it over. When she turned she asked if I wanted sangria's, it wasn't in the menu but it was just what I wanted. They play background music while you dine, not too loud and it's jazzy. Had a small celebration moment and decided it called for an espresso martini. In my continued search for the best espresso martini in Jax (and beyond) I'd say that this ranks top 5. I prefer the creamier ones made with Baileys, and this is that. Delish! My favorite part about having a nice little martini of any kind here (I think it's only martinis - correct me if I'm wrong) is you get a nice little extra pour from the carafe delivered alongside your beverage. It's basically an entire second martini! We also had the spinach queso dip that was decent. Nothing to write home about, but a solid little app to munch on while enjoying a drink at the bar. And per usual, the service was lovely. Fabulous bartenders (we sat at the bar) and great hosts. I will certainly be back again! It's a clean, fairly quiet experience. I wanted to take my wife and daughter to a nice New Year's Eve dinner. I had heard great things about this restaurant so made a reservation. We arrived and were greeted promptly. After a very short wait, we were seated a little earlier than our reservation time. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She provided excellent service snd was there when we needed anything. She took our drink and appetizer orders promptly upon seating, and gave us the perfect amount of time to enjoy those before asking to take our dinner orders. My wife ordered the filet and crab cake, and my daughter ordered the steak and fries. They both were very satisfied with their orders. From taste, to preparation and portion size, they both enjoyed their dinners immensely. I ordered the Steak Maui (marinated ribeye and mashed potatoes), and this is where the experience took a negative turn. The steak I was given was a NY strip. It was so obvious, that even our waitress immediately noticed and agreed. She offered to have the order corrected, but I didn't want to go through the wait again. I politely declined and just asked to have it removed from my bill. She was very apologetic, but this was not her fault. She cleared it from the table and the girls finished their dinners. The manager comes to the table and apologizes. She generously gave me a gift certificate for another meal, for which I was very appreciative. However, there was no apology for their mistake. The apology was "for the meal not meeting MY expectations". My expectations? Shouldn't their expectations be that they deliver a product according to their menu? It's not like I complained about seasoning or cooking technique. I sent it back because I ordered a ribeye and got a strip steak. How does a restaurant/kitchen at their price point try to pass off a strip steak as a ribeye? Does the kitchen not know the difference? Do they not know their own menu? Mistakes happen. But to pass this off as an issue with my expectations was very condescending. Semantics? I don't think so. It came across as careful wording to make it clear that the problem didn't lie in their kitchen. The manager took a mix up that would have not been a problem with a sincere apology, and flipped the script unnecessarily. It's a shame because the food my family received was great, and our waitress was great as well. read more

Two of my friends and I share September birthdays within a week and a half of each other. We started a tradition a few years ago of meeting up in September to celebrate. We decided to check out J. Alexander's as this was my first time. I made reservations and we were seated promptly upon arrival at 5:00 PM on Saturday. Our server Noel came by to check on us pretty quickly and gave us amazing service throughout our visit. We started with the onion rings. They were hot, crispy and delicious! Some of the best I've ever tasted. And I loved the dipping sauce. For dinner I ordered the steak (medium) n' fries but substituted fries for mac and cheese. The steak was cooked perfectly and the mac and cheese was unlike any I've ever tasted and I loved it! I could tell it had onions but unsure of the other ingredients. We were on the fence about dessert but we decided to order the chocolate lava cake. Our server Noel was so sweet she also brought us a slice of carrot cake which listed on the check was free marked as birthday;) The chocolate lava cake was rich and smooth and paired nicely with the vanilla ice cream. I normally do not eat carrot cake but after having one bite I went back for seconds, thirds and probably fourths;))) I look forward to my next visit when I can explore more of the menu. Went with family in the area for a birthday dinner. Sadly, I did not take pictures before digging in, so please excuse the one lonely picture. Started with the onion rings which were very crispy with a panko type coating. They were enough for 6 people as an appetizer. I had a house salad which was very large, and pretty good. 3 in our party had the prime rib. All said it was excellent. The horseradish sauce could have had more heat. I had the filet which was exceptional. Cooked perfectly. It came with a really large loaded potato which I didn't make it through. It was very good as well. We had no room for dessert. Service was on point and exceptionally friendly. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. I didn't get to see much of the restaurant as we were seated in a rounded corner booth but what I did see was very nice with good atmosphere. Haven't been here in a while and glad I came back. Made reservations and was taken directly to seat and we arrive early. The waitress was very pleasant and her service was top notch. Didn't have to wait long for refills or for any extra items requested. The food was really good, in my opinion. The alcohol beverages were good I would've picked the regular lemon drop over the raspberry just my preference. The amaretto sour was really great wish it had the maraschino cherries and not the basic bright red cherries. The ribs were a little tough for my liking so I wouldn't order that again. The pasta was a special for the night. The shrimp and scallops were plentiful for the portion given it was very flavorful with a hint of spice. Noddles could've been boiled a little longer but would definitely order again. The crab cakes 10/10. The crabs was seasoned with love fresh and meaty no artificial meat btw. Loaded mash and broccoli with cheese was delicious as well. Most places are stingy with toppings that wasn't my experience. I'll be back sooner than later. Glad I came in. read more

I'm a little surprised by how the ambience is for the price and for an upscale place. I was expecting more like Capital Grille but I feel I'm on a Carnival Cruise or eating at Cheesecake Factory. We were going to celebrate a birthday and thought we'd go to J. Alexander's since we hadn't been there in years. I tried to make a reservation for 8 online but they would only take a reservation for 4 or fewer. The website said that more than 4 would be on a first come, first serve basis. I got to the restaurant first and asked for a table for 8. I was told their tables could only accommodate 7 and they couldn't seat 8 together! I have never heard of such a thing. If they have those kinds of limitations at their restaurant why isn't it posted on their website. We went to one of their competitors and will never go back. read more

We had been to this chain many times in Boca Raton but never to the Jacksonville location until tonight. We had a six thirty reservation and were seated pretty close to that time. The restaurant was pretty full at that time on a Friday night. The menu has plenty of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. They also had a few specials. We ordered pretty quickly but the food took a pretty long time to arrive. I had the French dip sandwich with shoestring fries. The fries were plentiful and tasty. The sandwich was a little cool in temperature. My husband had the swordfish special. It came with couscous and butternut squash. He loved his meal. I had one of the most disappointing dining experiences I can remember at J. Alexander's. Last night, I ordered the French Dip, which is priced at $25. What arrived at the table was honestly shocking. The sandwich contained what looked like barely a third of an inch of meat. It was thin, sparse, and completely unacceptable for a restaurant at this price point. When I brought it to the staff's attention, even they were visibly surprised and admitted it should never have been sent out like that. Their solution was to bring out extra meat on a separate plate instead of correcting the sandwich itself. I then had to ask for additional au jus, even though I had already requested it when ordering. Nothing about the fix felt thoughtful or professional. The service only made things worse. Our waitress was disengaged and inattentive, rarely checking on the table. There were no proper table settings or utensils, and I ultimately had to walk up to the front myself just to ask for basic items. That should never happen in a restaurant that positions itself as upscale. This entire experience felt careless, overpriced, and poorly managed. For $25, I expect quality, consistency, and service. This restaurant delivered none of those. I strongly recommend avoiding this location altogether, and absolutely do not order the French dip unless you want to leave frustrated and disappointed. read more

Both were good. The salmon was very flavorful. The Tuna had a strong flavor but was still good. I ordered the Maui steak. The marinade was so good! This is my goto place. I'm there at least once a week but I was so disappointed! I ordered the trout with lemon miso sauce and lump crab. It came out with no sauce and 1 small piece of crab. We went for our wedding anniversary lunch while our kids were in school. The food was absolutely delicious, the staff was friendly and the wait was not long at all. For being located within the town center, the place felt very upscale and perfect for such an occasion. The drinks were delicious as well. We stopped by for dinner while in the Town Center area - it's always a great opportunity for shopping and a good meal. We were seated quickly, and were provided drinks quickly by Alexis S. She was competent and enthusiastic throughout our experience. I had the swordfish special which was excellent, with a crab sauce and some butternut squash. Pricing averaged about $55 per person all in, including soft drinks, tip and tax - certainly a reasonable value for a wonderful meal, excellent service and an ideal location. Reservations were easy to make online, and I'd highly recommend reservations since they do get busy especially on weekends. read more

I have seen J Alexander's around the country. When looking for a nice place to take my wife got her birthday I thought this was a great opportunity. The server came to take our drink order. She returned with the drinks and began to leave again. We had to stop her to order appetizers. I wanted to order the tuna tower before I even got there. When this came out it was 4 out 5 inches of avocado and other veggies, topped with about 1/4 inch of tuna. The tuna was very strong. Definitely not fresh. The menu says they cannot guarantee a steak ordered medium well or more. My wife and I both ordered medium rare. Her's came out medium and she ate it. Mine was medium well and I sent it back. The manager brought another one, apologized and asked me to cut into it. When I did and found it not to my liking, he asked me to cut it more towers the center. I understood this was the steak in would be eating. This one was on the high end of medium. He said he was going take my steak off the bill but that did not change the quality. I ate less than half of the steak. On top of it being overcooked there was a glaze on it. It burned on the steak like bad BBQ sauce. The mashed potatoes were very good. I had key lime pie for dessert and my wife had chocolate cake. These were both delicious. The service was not what one would expect at a high end restaurant like this. There are some really good upscale steak places in Jacksonville. This one misses the mark as a whole. read more

Came here to celebrate my birthday as I was finding a restaurant that is "fine dining" or "causal dining" as well also affordable for my guest as well. The reservation was place a couple days before my birthday and upon arrival table wasn't set as well need half of the party to be there to be able to go to the table. The lightning of the place is great intimate. Our server was great as well helpful. The food on the other hand for me was mediocre for me. We started off with The chef daily soup which was okay nothing special really. Just a creamy version of a chicken noodle soup. Tuna and chip ( not sure if that's the name ) - wasn't a big fan of it honestly but my guests enjoyed it And then for the main course I had the steak and fries but I substituted the fries for coleslaws which the coleslaw was pretty decent just wish it wasn't so dry. As for the steak was cook well but didn't had any flavor. My guests enjoyed their meal which I'm grateful for. Was in the area and really wanted a great steak that I knew was packed with flavor. So I had to stop here for dinner, I wanted to do take out since I was just so exhausted. The food was just as great when I ordered take out, I was Abel to order the filet mignon butterfly with a side j Alexander side which is my absolute favorite fav this side salad is 6 buck up charge but well worth it. Amazing steak, service and chocolate cake! Steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare), Mac and cheese was very cheesy and flavorful and their chocolate cake with ice cream was to die for. We had dinner here this evening while on a shopping trip to the Town Center. Let me start by saying we do not typically eat at chain restaurants, so this is not a normal stop for us. The first trip was about a month ago. What we like is the atmosphere, the service and it is close to the shops we frequent when shopping. They do have a nice menu but the bummer is the lack of fresh seafood (wild caught not farm raised options as the seafood of the day) and the lack of vegetarian entree options. I struggled to find something to eat. We started with the spinach queso which we also enjoyed last time and it was good. They should serve more chips as the chips run out way before the queso. Tonight, I had a baked potato for my entree and the hubby had a cheeseburger with fries. The potato was good and large. Hubby liked the burger but said it had way too much mustard on the bun. He liked his French Fries a lot. We had wine and beer and enjoyed it all. This could be a great spot with a few tweaks to the menu. Worth checking out if in the area. read more

The ambiance was nice inside, nothing to really look out at with the windows facing the sidewalk. I like that they offered a homemade veggie burger, it was really good. I heard great things about this restaurant so I was excited to go for our couple's dinner. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious! We had reservations made over a month in advance so I was surprised that our party of 8 felt like a last minute add as they had to bring two chairs over accommodate seating us so; it was a little cramped at the table with the plates and glasses. Our waitress was sweet but I am not sure if she had trouble hearing us as we had quite a few mixed ups with the dinner and dessert orders at the table. An example One person had ordered the wedge salad and the rotisserie chicken. Our waitress said they may be out of the rotisserie chicken but she would check. When the wedge salad came out it had shredded chicken on top! We were all a little confused but she ate the salad as it was. Then mix ups with side dishes and the wrong desserts. The portions are extremely large which is nice since the prices are high. I can't say that I had a favorite dish from the night but nothing was bad . My midnight margarita didn't really taste like anything.
