I always love going to J Alexanders! Whether I'm just relaxing at the bar sipping on one of there delicious cocktails or enjoying the amazing food it is always a great experience! I already know about the strict training and core values that every staff member has to learn and live by at j's and it shows no matter what location you visit! Everything is so focused on the importance of hands on teamwork and great guest service and satisfaction and with a menu that can't go wrong how could anyone not love coming here! I usually order their homemade veggie burger which had been my all time favorite since I had it over 15 years ago! It's out of this world I promise! However, this time I had a long day and I just wanted me some Mr. Jack's chicken fingers with those crispy shoestring fries towering on the plate all dipped in their honey mustard sent from heaven! I always have to get the orzo and wild rice too! I usually order it to go so I can enjoy it later! Also their Alex's side salad is not your typical side salad with cheddar and bacon, cucumbers, onions and tomatoes. Not to mention the freshly made croutons that I could just eat a big bowl of by themselves! Washed all down with a perfectly prepared dirty martini with my favorite, blue cheese olives and the carafe with some extra to keep the sipping going! I came to this restaurant as a last minute trip. I had passed by this restaurant a week before and it looked so nice from the outside. I went with some girls from work. As soon as I got in I noticed how romantic it looks in there. The lights are low and the setting was so nice. We sat in a booth that you can see the kitchen from. The place was pretty packed. The server was really nice. I had the New York strip and it was so delicious. It was huge, so I even brought a half of it to my husband who also thought it was amazing. The dessert was warm and delicious, perfect ending to our dinner. Overall great environment but I'm a little sad I don't have one in Orlando. Can't wait to come back. read more

The problem is that it is 2019 and this restaurant has no vegan options. There's nothing for me to eat here, so I just come for the half off Martini Wednesdays. It's disappointing, hence the 3 stars. J alexanders always reminds me of Jason Alexander from Seinfeld, but I am pretty sure the two are not related. The last time prior to this visit for me eating at j alexanders was back when they first opened. I can't really remember what i ate and how good it was which is probably why I had not been back in so long. Now I regret not coming back in so long because my dinner was on point. My party and I shared the colossal onion ring stack and queso for apps. Both of these were great, but those onion rings were some of the best onion rings I have had anywhere. A perfect balance of batter and onions and the sauce that was included could go on anything. For my entree I had the prime rib and I also got to try the Maui steak. The sides I got to eat were the cous cous and the mac and cheese. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and the steak Maui, although sweet, was very flavorful and had the right amount of char. The cous cous was good and the mac was impressive because I liked it and I don't even really like mac and cheese like that. The food can only take you so far without great service and our server PJ knocked it out of the park. He made sure to keep our drinks topped off and every suggestion he made shows that he was knowledgeable and cared about our business. The chicken tender platter is sooooo yummy. Perfect buttermilk crispy tenders on thin fries. The cole slaw, Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes are HUGE portions. Let me just say, you can never go wrong with J. Alexander's restaurant. My own personal opinion but I'm willing to stand by it. Especially if you're willing to spend a little and get those crab cakes. Oh my word, they are a true delicacy. With the rémoulade that comes on top too? Yes! Great stuff. I've had them with mashed potatoes for a side, grilled zucchini, and steamed tricolor cauliflower. You honestly can't go wrong with either of these options. Now I believe the standard side suggested for the meal is mac and cheese which I'm not a fan of but everyone sings its praises so it must be good. The waiters are always professional and courteous, and the drinks are good. I've tried the deviled eggs Appetizer twice now and while I wasn't initially too sure about the candied bacon in top, I see now after trying it, why that was such a good idea. It's got this sweet salty thing going on that pairs very nicely with the egg mixture. As stated previously, you just can't go wrong with J. Alexanders (from my own experience at least). How awesome is J. Alexander's Restaurant? I gorged there twice during my stay in Jacksonville, FL. So, if you're headed to the St. Johns Town Center, then you really have to pay tribute to this great casual dining restaurant chain. My single complaint to the staff - why aren't you in CA, let alone the West Coast? THE HISTORY CHANNEL The first location started in Nashville, TN in 1991. It's currently operated by the Fortune 500 company - Fidelity National Financial, since 2012. As of 2014, there are 30 locations nationwide, primarily on the East Coast and Midwest. The lucky states that have them are AL, CO, GA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MI, OH, TN, and TX. J. Alexander's is a contemporary American restaurant, with an upscale dining concept and modern twist. Their objective is to provide you with the highest possible dining experience. The prices are reasonable for the portions and quality. Each restaurant has a full bar that includes an outstanding selection of wines, both by the glass and bottle. The architectural design and look of every location is unique, matching the personality of the city it resides in. SERVICE BRINGS SALES Very neat and tidy. Every server beckons your call. None of that - let me get your server crap. I asked one of them where the restroom was, she personally lead me to the restroom - with a beaming smile. For some reason, the majority of the waiters at this JAX location were female and quite attractive as well. They all seem happy to be working here, helpful both times on suggestions and knowledgeable about the menu and food. I mean, they don't like fold your napkin when you leave the table, but they'll just about do anything else. Reservations are limited to just a few locations, so you know there's a reason for first come, first served. ONTO THE FOOD The reason I came consecutive days was because I knew one visit wouldn't do any justice. After reviewing the menu, all the items read and sound delicious. Here's what caught my eye. Filet Oscar - An age barrel cut filet topped with jumbo lump crab, asparagus, and bearnaise sauce. It's like you get steak and then some small pieces of fish to pair with it. Cooked medium and prepared oh so well. That mound next to it is a loaded baked potato. As to how they carved out all of the potato, leaving only the skin, and then making it so soft and steaming hot. It's the best baked potato I've had to date, I promise. Filet Kabobs - Aged marinated filet medallions with roasted - onions, green peppers, red peppers, cucumber, and served over rice. The veggies weren't burnt, but not soft. Just a perfect roast. The sauce over the rice wasn't briny, a tad sweet, and just meshes with the meat like it's almost gravy. The filet was cooked medium well, in order to give the right texture and feel. Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese - I'm speechless. UTTERLY. This is gourmet mac & cheese at it's finest. I couldn't stop smiling cause it truly made my day. My complaints about taking 2 flights to get to this city, all dissapeared after the first spoonful. Carrot Cake - I added a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but you don't need it. Imagine a slice of cake, slightly bigger than a thick piece of toast, served warm with cream cheese icing. Moist, fresh, sweet, soft - GO GO GO. I couldn't finish it, I really tried. But, all that great food, and then this? Once again, it's the best carrot cake that's ventured into my kisser within my lifetime. Creme Brulee - I'm not going to sound like a broken record and tell you "Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper, that it's the best around, but it's really good. Like you're Killin' Me Smalls kinda good. With a near perfect layer of hard caramel, rich custard that wasn't overwhelmingly luscious, but sugared just right. It didn't feel like room temperatute, like 2 degrees colder. Hail Hail, the gang's all here! And that was the perfect excuse for a business dinner at J. Alexander's in the St. John's Town Center area of Jacksonville. This high-end outdoor shopping mall features a number of nice shops and eateries, and the folks at J. Alexander's were able to accommodate our last minute dinner reservation with no issues. We met in the bar (big shock, I know), and then migrated over to our table once everyone had arrived. The waiter immediately said, "Let me get you guys the dark napkins since you're all wearing dark trousers." Dang, I guess we won't be ordering Happy Meals here! We ordered a few cocktails while reviewing the menu, and then set in for a long spell of catching up. After I could no longer feel my tongue, we finally decided to order some dinner, and thankfully I was able to place an order for the Artichoke appetizer and Steak Maui (marinated ribeye steak with smashed potatoes) without slurring my words. Damn those Old Fashioned's! Dinner was fabulous, and we really enjoyed the darker lighting and classy atmosphere. We were seated near the "Wine Wall", and it was fun watching the staff walk into the glassed-in wine cellar, and then selecting the bottles from the wall. Our server was fabulous, and checked in frequently without being obtrusive throughout the meal. She could tell that we were a group of old friends who were enjoying the opportunity to swap stories and talk about the latest news with our jobs. We were very pleased with the selection of J. Went for lunch we had Asian Salads and they were soggy. So Make sure you get dressing on the side otherwise you'll get a pre made not fresh tasting dressing drenched mess. I always forget about this restaurant, simply because it isn't as popular as some of the other restaurants in the vicinity. However, after visiting last night, I remembered that they have good food and drinks, so I will hopefully be back for more! My roommate wanted to go for the $19.95 prime rib special, which is only served on Sundays and Mondays. It was a vibrant atmosphere when we walked into the restaurant, but we were able to be seated immediately. For drinks, I chose a Michelob Ultra, which was $5 (not a bad price in my opinion), but they have wine, liquor, along with beer. Our waiter was super friendly and a little on the cute side, which made the experience pleasant. He said that her order of prime rib and my order of the Old Fashioned Cheeseburger were both excellent choices. When my plate arrived, it was two huge cheeseburger stacks, with cheese, patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, along with a plentiful serving of shoestring fries. Her prime rib looked perfect and came with a side of loaded baked potato. The prices for food are a little on the high side, but considering the quality and quantity, I can see why they can charge a little more. Every so often you run across a restaurant that makes you rethink your disdain toward certain dishes. Such is the case with J. Alexander's onion rings and mac & cheese. The rings were stacked 6 high and served with ketchup and some sort of remoulade sauce. They were huge and, thankfully, lacked the oniony bite that I previously encountered with those served in other restaurants. They were even good the next day. Now, I merely disliked onion rings. My hatred of mac & cheese ran fiery and deep. I don't know why that is - maybe it's because mac & cheese was the preferred latchkey kid meal and it reminded me of my absentee parents. Whatever... I'll work it out in therapy. The m&c that J. Alexander's serves was unlike any I had ever eaten. The gf had to threaten to stab me with her fork to keep me away from hers. Anyway, the mac & cheese came with a huge slab of grilled New York strip. I had the Maui ribeye with mashed potatoes. The ribeye was coated with a pineapple-soy glaze (hence, the Maui connection) which is okay if you like the whole sweet-and-sour thing. The potatoes were nothing compared to the saintly mac & cheese. For dessert, we had the crème brulee. The sugar coating was perfect in that it wasn't so thick as to form shards of razor-sharp bits that cut your gums and shatter your teeth. Maybe that isn't the best visual to describe food, but the point I'm trying to make is that the crème brulee was good. And, on top of it, was a little tree made of sliced berries embedded in mascarpone. So cute! So quickly consumed! read more

We came rather late on a Sunday and the place wasn't that busy. We had two orders of deviled eggs for apps which were amazing (hey it had bacon slivers on them)! On Sundays and Mondays it seems that the 10 oz prime rib is on special for 20 dollars. That's a good deal for a nice sized serving. I went with that with mashed potatoes. My wife ended up getting the salmon special with baked potato soup. J. Alexander is a nice dim place for intimate dinners and definitely has an upscale feel to it. J Alexanders is one of our favorite go to restaurants in Jacksonville. Just a short ride from the beach so it's quick and convenient. We didn't have a reservation Friday eve but decided to see if we could get in. There's plenty of self parking around the nearby parking lots but why bother because there's valet parking out front. We checked in with the hostess stand and were in luck, we could be seated right away. Regular menus, wine menus and another for specials, decisions, decisions. Premium cocktails to get us started while we look carefully over the multitude of menu options. They do have a pretty good selection of wine for the most discerning wine enthusiast so keep that in mind. J Alex is a farm to table restaurant so there's never a concern about the freshness of your meal. I started with an Alex salad which is served with warm baked croutons and topped with your choice of dressings, I prefer ranch. NY Strip steak for me which is served with NYO (not your ordinary) Mac and cheese. I'm a mac n cheese connoisseur and I must admit this is amongst the best I've ever had or made myself. Wifey had the pecan encrusted trout served over rice and a with a side of coleslaw. We finished with a carrot cake to go which wifey loved! The ambience is always amazing here. I have a dairy allergy and requested a plain potato but received a fully loaded potato instead. We came here to have a small, lunch birthday celebration for a friend of mine. This was my first time here. Let me first thank or excellent waiter, Jordan, for being so friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. He knew the menu well and was able to suggest and describe favorite items, joked with us throughout the meal and really made our entire dining experience come together nicely. My friend who's birthday it was ordered the prime rib; she can be kind of.... obnoxious, but it's her birthday so of course she was queen of the castle for this occasion! I didn't know know this, but I guess when she goes out to dinner with her husband, he cuts the steak for her...call this what you like: Endearing, sweet, weird or lush....it is simply a fact. Not knowing this I felt utterly mortified when she asked our waiter if he would do the honors. Jordan was such a good sport, and didn't hesitate at all: He took her gorgeous cut of prime rib and brought it back in perfectly cut pieces for our friend: Bravo! She smiled from ear to ear the rest of our lunch and for that, I can't thank him enough for! I ordered the filet mignon: YUM. Excellent sear on the steak and it was cooked to perfection; see for yourself in the photo. My crazy potato side rocked! The crab cake our other friend ordered might as well been called "Crab with some breading on top": This place puts some serious chunks of crab in their crab cake! I'm surprised she didn't find a whole claw in there. Impressive. Drinks all around were strong with quality ingredients; I absolutely loved the pear martini. The only con to this place honestly was the menu selection: We ordered some fantastic meals, but the reality is there wasn't much to choose from. Aside from what I mentioned above you had the choice of burgers, which are uninspired considering the numerous places you can get a burger, fish (not local) or salad. Eh. And the appetizers! My goodness, I do not know how anyone can share a freaking tower of colossal onion rings and then have a meal! Same goes with their deviled eggs plate. We were going to spilt an app before our meal but when we saw those leaving the window, we changed our mind quickly. They should rename appetizers to "Small Plates" or something of the sort. I can ALWAYS count on J. Alexander for a pleasant dinner. Whether with friends or flying solo, as I did on this particular occasion. As usual, I was pleasantly greeted by the hostess and seated very quickly. I absolutely had to start my dinner off with the Matchbook Shiraz, which I can not find in stores. I opted not to have an appetizer, because I knew the meal would be more than enough. If I had been with friends, we would have indulged in the awesome Southwest Rolls most definitely. Being under the weather for a few days and feasting on blah soup and awesome Pho, I felt the need for a big juicy steak. I ordered the ribeye, medium, and asked that it be more on the rare side. The waitress advised that a medium cooked steak would result in a soft red throughout, so I stuck with medium, and didn't order it medium rare. So very glad I did. The steak was cooked to perfection! It was seriously like butter melting in my mouth. This wonderful delight was accompanied with Not Your Ordinary Mac n Cheese. The name speaks for itself. I had been craving Capital Grille's Lobster Mac n Cheese, but was extremely pleased being not so ordinary. In short....another pleasant dining experience at J. Alexander's. I totally TREATED myself. I love J Alexander. It's an upscale version of your typical American fare, but in many cases it's a reinvented better version. This time I had the traditional cheese burger with fries and it did not disappoint. The bun was fresh and warm, the meat was juicy and perfectly cooked, and the fries were nice and crispy. The service was a little slow, but to be fair, I was running late and all my colleagues had ordered before I got there and our waitress thought I had already ordered. No harm done. While i waited for my food, I tried the mac and cheese someone else was having, and OMG, it was a spiritual experience. It was so good! I will be back just to have this dish, because calorie wise, it probably doesn't need anything else to go with it. :-) The only reason for the 4 star is that as prices go, it was a pricey cheese burger. We recently went back to J Alexander's again for lunch and I was amazed at how much I enjoyed their fish tacos. The first we went (a couple of years ago now), I ordered the same thing and had remembered it was pretty tasty. And then, I pretty much forgot about it and didn't go back because... well, I really don't like going to the Town Center for meals because it's always so busy. I think I am going to have to visit J. Alexander's soon again because the lunch we had was just delicious. We shared an order of their seared ahi tuna salad with Asian dressing and fish tacos. Both were soooo delicious. The fish was lightly battered and not greasy. The rice pilaf it came with was also great. The salad has a pretty good portion of seared tuna. The salad dressing was slightly sweet, but not too overpowering. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The service was great as well. Ate here last night for dinner with the in-laws, party of 4 total. Was disappointed as you can see by my 2 stars. First, the bottle of wine we ordered came to the table already opened. The server said it was restaurant policy that the bartender open all bottles at the bar. She was nice enough to offer to open a bottle at our table when she saw my disappointment in the procedure. The soda water we ordered were little 6oz bottles although they did offer one refill, still a bit cheesy. My wife ordered a medium rare steak and fries, but got medium/medium well. It was a bit bland. They did offer to fire up a new steak, and were very professional about it. We refused, because sending food back has caused issues in the past at other restaurants, so we don't do it anymore. My filet was bland, the bearnaise sauce was good. Ordered medium rare, got rare (cool, red center). Almost forgot to mention that 1/3 of the filet was well done, almost like it was leaning on the side wall of the broiler during cooking. I didn't say anything because I'm OK with rare steaks, and the in laws were treating me and my wife for our birthdays so I didn't want to ruin the experience by sending a ton of food back and pointing out more issues lol. Great baked potato. Ordered dessert. Chocolate cake was great. We ordered Creme Brulee (our favorite and have eaten it the world over from Paris to New York). It wasn't very good. Tasted like egg custard, almost no sweetness. I decided not to eat it. My wife decided to eat more of it as the flavor didn't bother her (she only had 4 bites). On the drive home she reacted to something in her tummy and was a bit ill in the car and at home. We assume it was the Creme Brulee as that is the only food she ate that the rest of us didn't. The manager did come to our table when she heard about the overcooked steak, so this isn't an angry response review. They were responsive. I gave this restaurant 2 stars because at the end of the night, when paying $70+ per person (not including tip - I peeked at the bill lol), there should be very little issues, and we had quite a few. One of my favorites. My first time was a few months ago, and it was a spontaneous dessert run. We came 20 minutes to closing, and we got nothing but smiles. Yes! In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the St. John's Town Center you'll find plenty of mouthwatering options. Sitting right in the middle of the high end shopping is J. Alexander's restaurant. The interior is in that new trend of lots of wood and low, yet not too low lighting. Booths and tables abound with a separate bar area. There's also an open, visible kitchen as you make your way to the powder room. The menu has a little something for everyone. Delicious appetizers if you wish to share with friends or just nibble. Entree salads if you want something little more substantial. Sandwiches and burgers for those wanting more protein, and of course steaks. Huge, honking sides of beef, prepared, seasoned and cooked to order. Some of my favorite appetizers are the deviled eggs and onion rings. The deviled eggs are scrumptious with bacon and relish on top. The deviled eggs are a MUST! The onion rings are crispy and can be cut with a fork. One of the items I probably won't ever get again are the grilled artichokes. I had them once and that was enough. They were very buttery and had little pleasurable taste. NOT one of my faves. Salads are a hidden gem of J. Alexander's. Alex's salad is superb and works well with any vinaigrette or something thicker like a Thousand Island. I've enjoyed the French Dip and would recommend it. Sliced like it should be and served w/ a baguette. However, my favorite entree, the reigning and defending champion is the Steak Maui. The marinade is just flat-out delicious. Some brown sugar and teriyaki (I believe) grilled to perfection (medium) and it just works. Served with very good smashed potatoes and it's the best item on the menu (or so says me). If they're available, the Kale salad and beefsteak tomatoes are great to get with any steak. Thick, juicy and lightly salted & peppered the beefsteak tomatoes are a delight. If you're like me and like Kale (yes, really) theirs is worth trying, as it's served with shaved cheese which compliments the Kale. It just works. The cocktails, from Martinis to Mojitos to Mules are almost always spot on and satisfying. It's unlikely your water glass will run dry as they bring a carafe of water to your table. I like places that do that. Just a nice touch. Service has always been good in both good and bad situations. No complaints from me. J. Alexander's isn't the least expensive place around but for what you get it's fair. If there are any drawbacks they're not unique to J. Alexander's. Friday/Saturday nights are busy--call for reservations. If you don't have reservations just put your name down at the hosting station and go for a walk. You're in the Town Center, waste some time. On weekend nights it can get fairly noisy, not loud so much as just ambient background noise. Not at painful levels but enough to cause you to have to ask your across-the-table dining companion to "say that again." J. Alexander's is a excellent choice for a nice, relaxing lunch or an evening out culminating in a wonderful dining experience. read more

OMG! 1 OF MY TOP 3 FAVORITE restaurants ever came thru for me at my Pre-Birthday Dinner planned by my JAX NORDSTROM FAM/FRIENDS. Walker our server gave such EXCELLENT Customer service and went beyond to accommodate us from beginning to end. He was so kind and humble with an amazing smile that captivated us all. Shout out to Mgr Rebecca aka Becca who went above the call of duty to ensure my favorite appetizer which is only served on Mondays and Thursdays was specially made on a Sunday and brought out as a surprise for me. I SCREAMED MY ONION RINGS! And my friends and I dove in. And oh what a night it was on from there. This place deserves the Four Stars it currently has. The food was good and the service was great. I had a steak and mac and cheese, the steak was good, but wasn't the best I have ever had. The mac and cheese was decent, but wasn't as good as they made it sound like. The wine list was decent, but of course they were out of the one wine that I really was hoping to try. All in all, good place, but nothing that makes me want to go back tomorrow. read more

I have enjoyed Jalexanders for years, now they have been put in place a few cost cutting measures. They don't serve fresh baked sourdough bread with cold butter, now you get a bland prepackaged white dinner roll and whipped margarine. The cups and saucers have been replaced with mugs. These seem small but they created a fine dining experience. The beginning of the end. read more

We ate at the Jacksonville Town Center. The food was excellent. Had Cajun flounder ,broccoli and smash potatoes. Spouse had the lean burger with fries. The service was excellent. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Really odd how much I love this restaurant! I say that because I've visited the location in Houston TX and absolutely loathed it. I was not excited that my friend wanted to visit here but I went with it and have went with it several times since then!..lol Great steaks and the Alex salad is my favorite salad ever (I dislike salads and find them useless..with the exception of this one, get the champagne vinaigrette dressing)!! Great service and decor. I've honestly never had a bad meal or experience here. Wait staff is always friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Mothers Day in Jacksonville and visited the food Mecca better know as St.John's Town Center. So many choices for an early dinner but settled on J.Alexander's and a good choice it was. At. 6:00 pm on this busy restaurant day our party of 3 was seated without wait. Wait staff was excellent with beverage and food service. Went for the prime-rib special and it was special. Done how I ordered with an over generous portion of smashed potatoes. Excellent taste and the 12oz. portion was perfect. Not my first time at this chain as I have been to other locations in Florida and the Midwest. Good food, good service and no surprises. read more
