Visited during peak dinner hours on a Friday, servers did their best under the circumstances, although there was a lot of understandable waiting, and servers were extremely polite. Food was mostly delicious and I feel it was well worth going, portion sizes were ideal. Dessert is available although there is no menu, cakes, excellent but would be a good idea to share. The good: Friendly host and server. Clean restaurant. Nice atmosphere. The bad: The Queso was just ok, the chips saved it. The filet & loaded baked potato was NOT like the picture on their site at all. Please see my photo of what I got. I asked for it to be medium well but do not butterfly it so the inside would be more medium. It came out well done and absolutely NO FLAVOR. I asked if the cook was using seasoning and was told yes, but it was dry and I had to add salt and pepper and A1 to even attempt to like my $44 meal. The béarnaise sauce had zero taste. And I didn't get garlic butter on top of my steak like the picture. My potato was going good but parts of it tasted like salmon. I guessing the cook was using the same knife for multiple items in the kitchen. Please please stop doing that. It really doesn't taste good. I also thought the queso tasted fishy but kept quiet about it incase it was just me. My son had the NY Strip and mac & chz. Equally tasteless dry steak. No garlic butter pat melting on top like the picture. The mac and cheese is really different. I'm assuming it was prepared correctly but we hated it and ordered french fries instead. The ugly: Our bill was $126 and I tipped 18%. (Our server was good but I'm pretty sure she knew we hated our food) It wasn't her fault but I was not totally impressed with the overall experience so I only tipped 18%. I love this place but today it was very disappointing. Lunch at the bar, only one other person sitting there. Ordered a salad, ice tea and had to ask for silverware when food arrived. I was never asked for a refill on my tea or if my food was good. The restaurant wasn't that crowded, bartender was busy texting on her phone. The guy who took my order never returned either to ask me how was everything he just stood behind bar. I also tip always and above the rate but today I did not. So disappointed on Management at this JAlexanders. I was planning a going away party for a coworker and called 3 weeks ahead of time to reserve a table for 15. When we arrived last night they had 2 large round tables that were not even close to each other, telling us that was the best they could do. When I spoke to manager, she told me that they would have never told me that they could have a table that could accomadote our size party. Basically, calling me a liar. It was miserable and I would have loved to gone somewhere else but by that time it's too late! Never returning. I had not been to a J. Alexander's in years but was meeting up with a friend who lives by the restaurant on White Bridge Road. We did not have a reservation, so we opted to sit at the bar. They have done a good job of separating the bar area with plexiglass dividers between every two bar stools. Even though we were sitting at the bar, it took a while for the bartender to take our order. I understand not wanting to make your guests feel rushed but it was also lunch time, so it seemed a little weird. My friend and I both ordered salads. I got the Thai Kai Salad and she ordered the Cypress Salad. My salad was fine. I can't say that it was earth-shatteringly-good. Lots of shaved chicken and a ton of those wonton crispy strips mixed in. My friend's Cypress Salad looked amazing--fried chicken, cornbread croutons, avocado, bacon, pecans...probably the most unhealthy salad ever invented but it looked really good. Two iced teas and two salads for lunch was $54 after tax and tip--kind of pricey for lunch. They don't have a separate lunch menu, so just be aware. read more

Prime Rib is excellent. Smashed potatoes is spot on. We dipped out perfectly cooked Med Rare Prime rib into the au jus sauce then finished it with creamy horseradish. Don't get me started on there made from scratch croutons or there fresh made ranch and blue cheese. Tabitha was so energetic and knowledgeable about her food. This experience was more then 5 stars. Sent my tenders back and asked for them to be more crispy... They Definitely just refried the same ones... Then asked me was that better.... I said yes in ignorance because they looked darker... then tried one and it had an aftertaste... the same kind of aftertaste you get when you refry the a finished product.. I can't prove what I didn't see same time iykyk. probably some kind of health code violation... but I won't know ‍ usually I love this place.... Guess I'll take a break for a while. This restaurant was pretty good if you're around the west end area and are looking to be fancy like Applebees on a date night, then this is your place! I enjoyed the lighting inside it felt intimate. Also the service was good. I had their tacos and they just tasted like American food. They knew they messed up and tried to hide it. Let me start by saying that we have always enjoyed visiting this location over the years . Tonight we had reservations for dinner and sadly the hostess running the computer was EXTREMELY rude and dismissive. She seemed almost bothered by the customers. First impressions are important to customers especially in a city with so many options to choose from. Went there for lunch. Way too loud. Ordered an in house made veggie burger & I've been eating veggie burgers for decades. I had to send this back. The taste was offensive, like maybe they used a lot of smoky seasonings & it was very oily & generally unpleasant. Husband got quiche. Said very mediocre. Best thing on his plate were the potatoes. We were maybe the only ones there drinking tea instead of alcohol, so that may be why the noise level bothered us. Very mediocre for lunch. read more

In what restaurant have you been where (1) hot water is served in a glass and so is the refill; (2) tortilla soup is served with a teaspoon; (3) the food server is unaware of the value of a soup spoon for soup but when specifically asked, manages to find a tablespoon; (4) the chef can ruin a basic salad with way too much blu cheese; (5) and all this was after waiting 15 minutes to be seated and another 15 minutes to have our order taken when the restaurant wasn't busy at all? Interestingly, the fastest thing to come to the table was the check. So we told the manager. Even as he said the server was new, the manager was quite properly apologetic and wanted to comp the bill. J. Alexander's is a restaurant trying to be fancy but without success. I went there with a friend for lunch, and we had the beets appetizer, the crab cakes platter and the roasted salmon. The food was good, just good, the quality of the salmon was kind of mediocre, it didn't have any taste. The crab cakes where pretty good instead, but I found them a little bit overpriced. The service looked good and efficient at the beginning, but it turned really slow. We had to wait more than 30 minutes to get the check and order a coffee. It would be better if it wasn't that expensive for the service and the food served. read more

I dined here this past Saturday and I was a bit disappointed. In attempting to dine here for lunch, the hostess left me very tempted to turn around and walk out the door. My party and I saw several empty tables but were told that there is at least a 15 minute wait. The hostess saw that we were confused as we looked over at all the empty tables and asked if we wanted to wait. The hostess could improve on her interpersonal skills, as a number of customers didn't understand why there was a wait with so many empty tables. We ordered two family chicken tender meals to go for a Christmas Eve gathering one week before. I called the day I placed the order on Line to confirm and make sure they understood I wanted french fries and Mac n cheese as the sides. I called again the day before to confirm. We got there 15 minutes early and no one seemed to know about our order. 30 minutes later we were brought out the Oder with the wrong sides even though I had told two different people what my order was. Another 10 minutes later we left late to get to the gathering. The the food was cold except for the fries that were missing from the order. Waiters and hostess stood around everywhere and there was no rush to get our order. I can't say I recommend them. It was a waste of 140+ dollars. read more

My Mom attempted to coordinate a birthday dinner. Restaurant agreed to 12 guest (tables of 6 due to COVID) and additional guest would have to be "walk in's". Upon arrival we were treated like 2nd class citizens by the General Manager who asked us to leave because my son was placing a birthday sash over me. She said that we were not being mindful of her "other guest" because we were "congregating". We left. I did reach out to her Manager, who gave me her version of the story. Yesterday, I had lunch with some out of town guests. Although the food was good, the service and wait time was not! We waited over 40 minutes for our food to arrive. The waitress never checked on us. We saw her talking on her cell phone a few times as we waited. I had to get up and ask another waiter to please check on our order. We were not happy. When we finally got our order, the food was cold. Please review expected customer service with the wait staff. This is usually one of my favorite restaurants to bring guests. Surprisingly enough had one of the best quick lunches of my trip here and one of the best veggie burgers I have eaten all month! The burger is super generous and fresh and hit the spot for lunch and comes with a nice side of fries! The service was friendly and prompt and the gin and ton was nice and strong - just as it should be. My mother and I had lunch here on Monday. First, they not only greeted us at the door, they held both doors wide open so my mother could easily maneuver her walker inside. I love this place as the steak Maui is my absolute favorite. Yesterday my BF & I went in for a dinner without reservations so we ended up eating at the bar which is first come first serve. We ordered a green apple martini and a Long Island iced tea which were pretty good. My BF had the ribs which he devoured lol so it's safe to say that they were good. I gave them four stars because I had to send my steak back because it wasn't HOT, they sent it back and corrected promptly which I appreciated and made sure I was satisfied. My wife ordered a medium rare filet and received a charred piece of raw cold meat. I ordered a rare NY Strip and received a medium piece of Kroger quality sirloin. We were not pleased. Went here for Mother's Day weekend, originally from North Carolina and all I can say is I wish I can give this place more than 5 stars, the service was 10/10, atmosphere 10/10, and food was 100/10. I had the slow roasted prim rib with mashed potatoes and the au jus sauce paired with it was fantastic!!!! My mother and sister had the brasserie pako chicken with some amazing sauce on top which made the chicken melt like butter. Everything taste so delicious!!!
