The service at all of the locations we have eaten is great, except the one on White Bridge Pike. The food is great but the service is non-existent every time we visit. Don't dare come in when they first open the door--they're all too busy to even acknowledge you, much less help you. They're busy finding the stapler, or looking at who knows what on the computer, or talking to each other. When they do finally notice you, the waiters are nowhere to be seen. Waiters have zero personality or interest in their job. This location is the most convenient but we will not be back again. read more

Went here on a Saturday afternoon with a friend. I normally come here when I'm in Nashville. The service was wonderful and of course the vibe and environment is always nice, but the food was just okay. It wasn't bad, just not special or interesting. It was always made as a whole filet, served with creamed potatoes, wasabi mayo and soy sauce. Tonight, it was a DISASTER. Little COLD slices of tuna, served with three little COLD stuffed cherry tomatoes and COLD fries. I have always told my friends that JA's Ahi Tuna Steak is the best in the country. Brought here for the first time with my friend that's a regular here. Ambiance was nice. We ordered salmon dip, he had a salmon entree and I ordered a medium well done burger. We noticed the salmon was undercooked a few bites in..he said "it tasted like mush" . Which was disappointing. We ended up splitting my burger at that point which ended up being medium rare but at that point... The highlight of the night was our sweet waiter that did everything to make sure it didn't ruin our night. He was helpful with recommendations, and looked like he was personally offended when we showed him the salmon. We attempted to get the managers attention with no avail.. but happy with the service none the less. Used to really enjoy this place but recently just has been unpleasant. 2 times ago I accidentally dropped my fork, and couldn't get another one to save my life. Last time we got the salmon dip and it was rancid. This time, we had a reservation, arrived on time to a half empty restaurant. Despite this, it still took 25 minutes to get seated. I get it sometimes wait staff are short but this actually didn't seem to be the case and at least give some explanation. The 3 hostesses milling out front had way too much attitude for the glorified Applebee's they preside over. Next, instead of the restaurant ( which again was half empty ) we were seated in the bar where the best of Belle meades winos were shouting at each other. Our waitress was inattentive at best, obnoxious at most. Food took forever to come and was cold. We used to dine here quite a bit but I can't see coming back. 0/10 stars read more

Have been a 25+ year patron of J. Alexanders. In its early decades, it was the date night out place. Since it's a local place for us, it had always been a monthly stop. We did notice that the experience gradually declined over the past few years, just was not the same. It may have been that the stringent formulaic trained wait staff had changed (staff has always been amazing & I'm acknowledging covid reeked havoc). We just couldn't pinpoint why we stopped going. The food is always good, but we realized that it did come down to customer service. With drinks and wine, it's easily a $150 meal. We just expected more. We gave it another try tonight. Had, what I figured out, a fairly new server, Tiffany. From the initial ordering to the check delivery, she was amazing. We realized that dining there is as much about the experience as it is the food (which, again always great) With restaurants having a tough time finding great staff, J.Alexanders got 5 stars tonight. read more

This is usually a lot better, but tonight was not. My nephew ordered the Steak Maui and asked for it Medium Rare...it came out well done. Even the waiter said that too. He took it back, but it took almost 15 min to get a new steak. Everyone else at the table was done with their food by the time the new steak came out. This should have been comped... period. By the time my nephew got the steak...he only ate a few bites. Still wasn't that great. By the way...it was about the most expensive thing on the menu. Today we came back after not being here for almost a year and were blown away by the service. Our first experience with this location was not so good but Felicia (who is no longer at this location) rectified our experience immediately! She encouraged us to return and surely enough we did. The food was both tasty and exceptional. The service was prompt and responsive, and the experience one of a kind. Much thanks to Jack our server. He was quick, informative and funny. February 9, 2020, not one if the best visits for one of my favorite restaurants. One in the party ordered deviled eggs. It was obvious that they had been prepared a while ago and placed in the refrigerator until ordered by guests. One had egg shells. Spoke with the manager and received an apology. Another order was brought to the table. Also, the tea with orange and cranberry juice was very watered down. The manager checked and a replacement glass was brought out to the one person who decided to give it a try. It was somewhat better. Separate checks were requested and received. The cost of the deviled eggs was divided among all of the checks. This was not requested and I was reminded that this has been done by the restaurant in the past. If one person ordered an appetizer, unless otherwise directed, that item should be the total responsibility of the person that ordered it, or at least ask if the cost should be divided. One who shared in the cost did not eat any of the eggs. They were not willing to embarrass the person that ordered the eggs by asking that the cost be added back to that bill. read more

Used to really like eating here. Had a couple bad experiences with food and experience last time so wanted to give it another go. The spinach cheese dip was 100% microwaved. My grilled chicken in the salad was hard from all of the char. Brown avocado. Not fresh romaine. It was three of us and the total was $120. Had one app, three regular meals, no alcohol or desserts. I really want to help whoever reads this and save them $120. Unfortunately J Alexanders is now a glorified Applebees or Ruby Tuesday. read more

This is my second time at a J Alexander's and coincidentally enough, at this location. I was not impressed the first time. Food took forever and when I got it, it wasn't cooked all the way through. I tried to have an open mind today. I couldn't have meat today, so I settled for their artisan margharita pizza. It was good, but not the best thing ever. My manager got soup and salad and both looked really good. The soup smelt delicious. Maybe i should've gotten that. I don't really see what all the hype is with this restaurant. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! We went to a show at the Tennessee Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, 3/15 and decided to make a reservation at J. Alexander's for dinner after. We have enjoyed other J. Alexander's locations in the past and thought it sounded great! We had a reservation at 10:15, about 45 minutes before the restaurant closed. We were not the only people in there. There were several tables occupied, but the entire meal felt incredibly rushed. They wanted us the h*** out, and they made it VERY clear. We ordered an appetizer and sat WAY too long to receive it. When we finally did, literally--no exaggeration--our main course came LESS THAN TWO MINUTES LATER! We had each eaten one bite from the appetizer when the runner came with our meal. After that, we literally never saw our server again, unnnnnnnnnnnntil he brought the bill. NOT ONE TIME during our meal did he check on us. Never asked how our meal was, never refilled our drinks. NOTHING! We wanted to order desert, but he made it clear when he brought the check that they were not interested in us ordering a desert. He didn't even come back to take my credit card. Someone else came to do that and SHE had to refill my drink. I had asked the server to do it when he bought the check. He said he would, but he never came back with a refill. A third person finally brought the refill. I KNOW how to tip at a restaurant, and I ALWAYS tip on service. I tipped our server 15%. That was a mistake; he should have gotten nothing. I will never, ever return to this restaurant, and I will tell everyone I can not to go to this location. Your restaurant is open until 11:00 PM. We were there at 10:15. Even if we walked in at 10:55, you should treat us like GOLD! *WE* pay your pay check. TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE YOU GIVE A CRAP! REGARDLESS OF WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR ESTABLISHMENT. The carpet was wet and mildewy. Smells like old dish rags that have been left in a pile for weeks even the staff were complaining. I eat here all the time. The service is always great. The wine list is quite good. The food is usually very good. I always enjoy the Brasserie chicken!! The portion is huge so always can take home extra. My date often gets the salmon, which is sometimes a bit undercooked. The orzo and wild rice is misleading bc there are all kinds of things in that side dish - definitely not just orzo and rice - more like a pasta salad. I have friends in town from out of state and took them to J. Alex on white bridge road yesterday. I told them that the food is always consistent and the staff is always great. I have been eating here for 20+ years and never had a bad meal or ever had to send a meal back. Well, let me tell you yesterday was more than horrible. Started out with the spinach dip. It came out cold so we sent it back only to have a cold dip come back out. The tuna dish was horrible the vegetable special of the day (beef steak tomatoes) were soggy and horrible. Mac and cheese was cold. Usually you never have to ask for anything the staff is on top of everything. This lady was horrible and rude and slow the entire time we were there. We had to practically beg to get something to drink and chase her down. Rude waitress said she would remove the dip it from the bill. When we received the bill after we had to flag her down over and over the dip was still on the $47.00 bill. We mentioned the dip was on the bill that she said she was going to remove. She took the bill back and then brought us a bill for $58.00 dollars. How did the bill go up instead of down in price? We just said forget it and paid the bill to get out of there. I went to the ladies room and there was urine all over the floor it was filthy and smelled horrible. I'm just so shocked that everything was so terrible. Right around the corner from Saint Thomas West hospital, on White Bridge Road, sits J. Alexander's. My wife took me there so we could have lunch before heading home. Once inside, they did a great job of getting us seated. Good points there, bad points for the obstreperous noise level. Our excellent server, Jared, gave us a list of all the specials before he took our orders. I chose their bacon Swiss burger and my wife picked the cypress salad. On the menu, that salad was listed as being without tomatoes- that's why my wife chose it. Unfortunately, tomatoes were present in the dish as served. As my wife picked the tomatoes out of her salad, a server offered to bring her a new cypress salad. My wife declined the offer and asked for more salad dressing, which arrived instantly. Later, the manager stopped by to check on the situation. First rate service all the way around. My bacon Swiss burger looked mouth watering sitting on my plate. The meat seemed to have the right % of fat and was cooked just as a medium burger should be. The thick sliced bacon was prepared so that could be doubled over on my burger, Any crispier and doubling would have been impossible. My bacon Swiss burger would have been a winner, but for one thing...the bun.My burger simply needed a bigger bun. half of mine fell apart and I had to eat it with a fork, like mama's meat loaf. Both of us had carrot cake for dessert.. The moist, fluffy cake was full of bits of carrots, pecans and coconuts with a hint of orange peel. It was topped with a luxurious cream cheese frosting. I went into J Alexander's tonight with a heavy heart and an empty belly. I said at the bar and three of the most wonderful bartenders ever. If you're looking for somewhere to eat and to enjoy a good company please, set up the bar and just be yourself. The bartender/dream team will get you to the spot you need to be. We are a regular, local. J's has been one of our favorite for years in Franklin, Tn. You could always count on a great meal, great service, great beverage choice. We dine there about once a month. last week, we had our 54th wedding dinner at J's, counting on another great evening. But something has happened. my wife ordered the Pork Chop, I ordered the Prime Rib, my son ordered the Ribs. My wife had one bite, almost choked, she said it was way too salty and could not eat it, it ended up in a take home box, for my sons dogs. My Prime Rib, was grey, not medium rare, actually grey in color. It had a normal taste, but it looked dead. No red no pink. imordered a VO Manhattan, they no longer stock VO, so I ask for Seagrams, normally their beverage is delivered in an almost full glass, with an almost full sidecar. Neither was true, the glass was half full, so was the side car. our waitress acted as though here is your check, we were not asked if we wanted desert, or if we wanted something on the side for the anniversary. anyway, this experience was way below par for J's, maybe the sign of the times? After a forgettable visit during 2020, checked out this location since I was nearby. Host quoted 30 mins for a table for two on a Sunday at Lunch. We sat immediately in the bar, and had excellent service from the gent working. What stands out is that the food was phenom! Their Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich did not disappoint. Stopped in for lunch with a friend. The waitress was very nice & sociable. I ordered a turkey burger for $12 and it was amazing. One of the best turkey burgers I've had in a long time. It was thick and juicy.. had lots of flavor. I love the fresh roma tomatos served with the burger and the well seasoned peppered skinny fries. I will definately be back for more. And for dessert, I had the carrot cake... which is absolutely phenominal. So moist and delicious. The slice was huge, well worth my $7. That was one of the best carrot cakes I've ever had... besides my grama's. But definately thee best substitute ever. My friend ordered the rotissere chicken with mashed potatoes and chocolate cake for dessert. Now that meal was also delicious. The chicken wasn't dry and the chocolate cake was rich, but not overwhelmingly chocolately... it was definately ediable. Unlike some chocolate cakes you take 2 bites and you're done cause its to rich & powerful. No regrets on our part. Tried this place for the first time with my sister for her birthday. It was an ok experience. My sister's chicken was cold the first time, over cooked the second time so Manager Felicia gave her a free salmon meal to accommodate. The mash potatoes were amazing and hot and we both enjoyed that. So whoever the cook was of those potato's on June 6th you all make sure to keep him!! I Was told in these exact words "did you try online"? Not " Im sorry we no longer take phone orders". " You can come in and order." I go in to order was told go up the stairs and order on a machine. There was one machine and it was occupied. It as if they do not want the business. For example I then called Redlands on West End Redlands and tried to place a phone order and was greeted with "I am so sorry we no longer take orders over the phone ". The young lady at the White Bridge Road location needs to take note and learn customer service. Also please acknowledge everyone does not have internet access. There are ways to speak to clients and perhaps this was one person and not reflective of the whole restaurant. However I will continue at Redlands. I take this seriously and work with the public as well. That was not acceptable. read more

She buzzed our beeper for the table and then told us it would be another minute, which turned into 10. We lost our seats and stood awkwardly by the cold door. Thankfully, the food didn't disappoint! I devoured the cypress salad with glee. With 1/2 avocado, loads of bacon and homemade croutons how could I be full (hehe) of anything, but joy? Boytoy ordered the French dip sandwich with fries. We had a big party with us so we decided to call ahead to see what the wait would be like-the person on the phone couldn't tell us for some reason so we decided to just go. We all drove in separate cars so once the first group arrived to the restaurant the hostess explained that we could not be seated until everyone arrived-the only downfall to J Alexander's. Aside from that the food was AMAZING. I've been before and I think just about anything on the menu would be good. The most important thing is that you can not leave with out having a piece of CARROT CAKE. It comes out with warm icing on top and the cake itself is truly amazing. Even if you're not a carrot cake person you would like it. We have been every time we go to Nashville so I would definitely go back again and again. read more

J Alexander's is a regional chain with locations scattered across the Southern and Midwestern parts of the States, and most importantly with two locations in Nashville. I had the pleasure of going to the location on West End Ave in Nashville. J Alexander's is just straight up new American Cuisine. They serve steaks, chicken dishes, and fish. The staples of all American style dinners. So when you are here you might as well dive in and order a steak. The restaurant building has a nice vibe, they have low lighting and over-sized booths. It just looks like the kind of place that serves steaks, all the tables and furniture look, well, sturdy. I took my family here for a meal when they were last in town. We had a big booth in the front room. Our server was really pleasant and charming even. Dinner here with wine and desert will run you about $40 and up per person, FYI. read more

Go to the West End Avenue location! This location is controlled by very young hostesses at the door. They will ask "Do you have a reservation?" When the restaurant is EMPTY! And if you do not, they say "wait time is 40-50 mins" & they are serious! You can go sit at the Bar which is the only busy part of the restaurant. We sat down to "wait" mainly because I wanted to see how many reservations actually came in - in 35 mins ONE family with reservations came in and they were seated in the BAR area! With two small kids!! The whole restaurant was still EMPTY and there were 3 of parties over us waiting - looking at each other like this is crazy! I then went to talk with the you girl and 3 other you g hostesses (4 total!!) anc she admitted it was staffing issues! I asked her if we would be seated soon, that we could have eaten & been gone already and she said I still had 26 of the stared minutes left to wait!! In the time that we waited, she turned 5 parties of people away! She suggested to every one of them that they could sit at the crowded Bar! Even two elderly ladies! We decided for kicks to drive over to the West End location to see how they handle it - we walked in, they asked if we had a reservation, we said No & they sat us immediately in a Booth - the whole place was crowded & hopping - GO to this location! read more
