The cocktail, appetizer, and dessert were good, everything else could be improved. We had a reservation and arrived right on time. Despite many tables being clear and 3 to 4 workers around the check-in area, we still had to wait. They seemed confused about how and where to seat people. This was a Wednesday night and wasn't very busy so I can only imagine what it would be like on the weekend. After we were seated it took a longer than expected time for our server to arrive at the table. In general, everything was slow. I was almost finished with my meal before my second cocktail was delivered. As for the steak, my filet was charred on the outside giving it a burnt taste and was unevenly cooked with parts being overcooked and others undercooked. My husband had the ribeye Maui. It was cut like a breakfast steak, overcooked, and way too much sauce. He said it is the worst steak he has ever eaten (and he eats and prepares a lot of steaks). A very popular dinner spot for locals. Parking is a challenge, they have many spots allocated for takeout, but that is reasonable seeing the amount of orders they receive. Do make a reservation, it's easy enough to do and you won't have a long wait time if you do. There is a lot of seating and they are well staffed. Some of the tables weren't ideal for a couple, but we simply requested another and that was drama free. It's a little noisy on the inside, which is an indication of everyone's pleasurable mood. Service was terrific. Our waiter was emo and simultaneously professional, highly skilled at his craft. We appreciated his candor. The prime rib was excellent, but absolutely skip the artichoke appetizer. It's a messy battle that isn't conducive with the rest of the meal. Their carrot cake was indeed the best I have ever had. I'm no connoisseur, but I found it to be delightful. My only wish is they had creme brûlée on the menu for a dessert. read more

She was delightful and checked on us with the right timing. I ordered the crab cakes which were full of lump crab. There is way more crab than breading which I can appreciate. My only complaint is that my food could have been a bit warmer. I didn't feel like sending it back. I paired it with a glass of Riesling. Something to note, this is also known as Redlands. I am never disappointed when I come here. It's the consistency for me!! When I want a good steak the Steak Maui never disappoints. It's so flavorful and it was prepared to perfection (medium). I always swap out the mash potatoes for the Mac n cheese. No matter what I order here I ALWAYS order the Mac n Cheese, it sooo good! It's one of the best out there!! When I come here with my family we always start with the Queso dip. I got the modern Moscow mule and my sister got a skinny margarita. We both enjoyed our cocktails. My sister couldn't decide if she wanted the chicken platter or steak so we decided to split both. It was the best decision!! The chicken tenders were juicy and seasoned well. You get both honey mustard and bbq as you dipping sauces, both are delicious! The platter also comes with shoestring fries and she subbed her coleslaw out for.....Mac n Cheese!! J Alexander's never disappoints. We came here for an early dinner and started with the queso dip. It came pretty quickly which I was thankful for considering we were all hungry! I ordered the tenders and subbed the cole slaw for the Mac n' cheese. If you've never had their Mac n' cheese, you are missing out big time!! The tenders were great and i love their honey mustard sauce! My sister ordered the steak maui (not pictured) which is one of my favorite things on the menu (after the mac n'cheese). I have been to J. Alexander's in Michigan and am so happy there are locations in Tennessee. This place NEVER disappoints!!! The brasserie chicken, the ribeye, the mac and cheese, the wine, everything is top tier. The portions sizes are huge (as you can see) and you will surely have leftovers. We had leftovers for the next day and they tasted just as good. We had a party of two on a Friday night at 7:30 and ended up waiting 45 minutes. Not bad, and expected as a walk in on a weekend. I flagged him down and told him that I was ready to order. He nodded his head. The gentleman sitting next me says, "I don't think he heard you." I say to the gentleman, "He heard me and he looked me dead in my eyes." Never took my order. The next thing I know, he had one of the other bartenders take it, without saying anything to me. Later, I asked him for water later, and he nodded again without uttering any words. He then, speaks to the couple directly next to me and asks them how they are doing and if they needed anything. At this point, it feels like he's being negligent to me as his customer on purpose. The man next seated next to me shared that he's a regular--mind you, he received his martini before me even though I ordered before he sat down. For the foreseeable future, I'll take my business elsewhere or another J. Alexander, because I've always received good service in Michigan. Do better bartenders. I hope that three servers are more attentive than the three of you. Management beds to retrain their bartenders asap. The atmosphere is very off putting and blatant. House said was very good; caesar salad was ordinary. Ribs and crab cake entrees were outstanding. I have been dining at this J. Alexander's since it opened. Last night's visit might be it for a long while. My $47 Steak Maui was unacceptably tough and not medium rare as requested. Our waiter was inexperienced and awkward. My friend said that his dinner, the snapper special, was quite good. However, at these prices, ending up with hit or miss entrees is certainly not worth it. By the way, we were there on the early side and there were a number of empty tables, so I don't think the kitchen was slammed, unless it was with to-go orders. read more

A friend and I went to J. Alexander's on White Bridge last week. It was the greatest. I had the Prime Rib and loaded Baked Potato. BJ had the filet and potato. All I can say is the service and food were "over the top"!! Our server was awesome!!! The manager and the bar tender came by our table to visit us. I have been a fan of J Alexander's for many years but last night left a lot to be desired. We decided to celebrate my birthday at the west end location and brought a few bottles of wine because there is no corkage fee at J Alexander's. Surprise, there is now but we weren't told and it hasn't been updated on the website. It would have been nice to be told of the change before we were charged $25 a bottle. The real kicker was that we ordered the avacado bomb as an appetizer and when we cut into it, we noticed crab. A member of our party was allergic to shellfish and she thankfully noticed before eating it. We double checked the menu and it didn't mention crab as being in the dish, only tuna. We told the waitress and she was said she told the manager but there was nothing done to make it right. All the food was still delicious but I just expected more from J Alexander's. read more

I made reservations and took an old friend there for lunch today. Everything was very good. Our server was pleasant, attentive, and made sure our beverage glasses were never empty. My only complaint, and I know this isn't the servers fault because I learned years ago they are made to do this, was trying to upsell items I have no interest in. So of course I had to sit through the obligatory "Would you like some spinach con queso? Would you like some carrot cake?" NO I don't..... I had the double cut pork chop with baked potato and broccoli. It was delicious. My guest had the salmon sandwich with fries, and he said the same. This was probably my third time at this location and it never fails. I sat at the bar as the restaurant was pretty busy during lunch hour. The bartenders were very attentive and managed to get me in and out within an hour. I tried the artichokes for the first time. Plenty big to eat alone and pretty flavorful. They say they dont know of each other but I dont believe that for one second. Needless to say, it was one of the best meals that I have had so far in the Nashville area. I had the Crab cakes and OMG they were amazing! They were full of big juicy lumps of crab and cooked to perfection. I got them with the slaw and the mac and cheese and the mac and cheese is probably the best I have EVER had anywhere! The man got the prime rib which was also very good! This trip to J. Alexander's is brought to you by my friend Brent A's birthday. I planned it with another friend of mine a few weeks ago and neither of them had ever been to Kayne Prime. So I promised we would go but my lapse in judgment thought it would be easy to get a table because people aren't going out due to COVID. Fast forward to earlier this week, I forgot 1) I live in Nashville and 2) everyone had given up on quarantining. So not only was Kayne fully booked, so were other high-end steak houses. Then of course, they suggested Stoney River, which I despise. Stoney River's food is good but it's overpriced. The price you pay for Stoney River pales in comparison to even chain steakhouses like Fleming's, Morton's, or Ruth Chris. Then I remember years ago when I was married, my ex-wife and I would always go to J. Alexander's! I remembered I loved that place. I placed a reservation online and had plenty of options to choose from. Fast forward to today and we were off to the races. Upon being seated, I ordered my usual. Fire-grilled artichokes, a house salad with the cilantro lime vinaigrette, a New York Strip (med rare) with a loaded baked potato. It brought back memories of times when I was in love. Not of my ex-wife (haha) but of how delicious the food was! What I really like about J. Alexander's is the wood-fired grill. There's something about the flavor of grilling over open wood that enhances everything. That's why you have the eternal debate of charcoal VS gas. It's that slight taste of char/smoke from wood that enhances the culinary experience. So to start off, the artichokes. Nobody at the table likes artichokes, which was fine. I didn't want to share anyway. Two whole artichokes, seasoned with herbs and butter, split in half and served with remoulade. Despite being more work than eating several clusters of crab legs, it's worth the effort. Buttery, garlicky, with my teeth scraping/nibbling the small piece of heart attached to the base of every leaf. Maybe it's the butter? I don't know... I just know I like it. Next up is the house salad with cilantro lime vinaigrette. As far as salads go, as long as the veggies aren't wilted, all salads are the same. It's the dressings that make or break it for me and this cilantro lime hits the spot everytime. Now I know, cilantro is as polarizing as anise seeds so if you think cilantro has the flavor of soap, blame your genetics. It's fresh, it's tart, it's sour, and it's sweet. It's the best house dressing since I discovered the Hot Bacon dressing at Rafferty's. Now the main course. Loaded baked potato. Again, like salads, it's hard to mess up. The bacon is real (not imitation) and it's loaded with sour cream, chives, and butter. The outside skin is seasoned with butter and salt. If you screw up a baked potato, consider yourself a failure. The prize here is the steak. I've never ever had a bad steak here. Always cooked perfectly with the wood smoke enhancing the overall flavor. Each bite had the right amount of salt, splash of creamy melted butter, slight crispness to the cooked fat (which is why I like NY Strip) and was absolutely juicy and tender. It was like that from beginning to end. Now here's the bad part. I got so caught up in the food, I forgot to take the pictures except of the artichoke hearts (which I got first). So... That's my fault. If you're looking for a good meal with friends or your significant other/date, you can't go wrong with J. Alexander's. read more

Food was mostly delicious and I feel it was well worth going, portion sizes were ideal. Dessert is available although there is no menu, cakes, excellent but would be a good idea to share.
