4.5 I just love this place! We celebrate Christmas Eve here every year and try to make it as many times possible in between. I started the night off with a dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. They are always amazing! For dinner, I had the crab cake special with Mac and cheese instead of fries. It was delicious! My parents went to lunch for their 60th anniversary yesterday. Both ordered the prime rib sandwich. This is was the amount of fat on my dad's sandwich. Beyond ridiculous that they served this and for $$$ they paid. Shame on you J Alexander's for serving something like this. Also, not to have a manager there to address the concern and a waitress not to have the ability to comp the sandwich. Happy Anniversary to us !! We decided to try somewhere new for our 14th anniversary. Needless to say we were very pleased with our choice. We started with the Mexico City Queso w/ chips. It was warm and delicious. My husband kept committing on its flavor with every chip. The Pico was a nice pairing with it. Next we ordered our main courses. I want to say that our server was outstanding. Her enthusiasm and input in food selection were 4+ stars alone. I chose Mr. Jack's Crispy chicken and chose the loaded baked potato and the Not So Ordinary Mac and Cheese. The pictures soak for themselves. I will say the chicken wasn't seasoned however I enjoyed the buttermilk fry coating. It was light and crunchy. The baked potato was a cmgreat size and the toppings were fresh which is always a bonus. My husband chose the rotisserie chicken to change up his normal ordering of steak. Said he was pleased with how it was seasoned and cooked. Also loved the chicken glaze that accompanied it. And the Not So Ordinary Mac and Cheese earned is name. Because it was made with the Not So Ordinary cheese.... it presented a different taste and creaminess. The Gouda was the star of the dish. My friends took me here for the first time. We had 2 French dips, Thai salad, rotisserie chicken and cilantro shrimp. The atmosphere and ambiance was very modern and chic. I wouldn't go on the deep end of fine dining, but it was close. Service was amazing, our waiter was very hospitable and prompt. The food came hot and fast. One of the French dip was ordered with double meat, another person (manager?) came out to verify this and let us know it was $20 more. That was fine. But when we received it, it felt like it should be on a bigger piece of bread, but the main downside was that the meat was mainly fatty pieces. My friend was a bit annoyed by this, the sandwich would've been fine if was edible. But the ratio of fat to meat was way off. We got our waiters attention, she fixed it, we got the chicken tenders instead. Chicken tenders were meaty and light breading (almost KFC-like), it needed some Louisiana hot sauce to kick it up a notch. The manager followed up with my friend stating, "So I heard you didn't care for the sandwich". I don't know about y'all but I wouldn't start off my first sentence with this, especially for customer recovery, etc. But I had the cilantro shrimp, the Cajun seasoning and oil were the perfect amount. It all started on a quiet star-lit night in 2006, after I returned from Phoenix on a business trip and we were searching for a spot that had a steak like the one I'd eaten in Scottsdale... wait wait, that's gonna be WAY too much detail... Let's just say, we dropped in, had the wood fired fillet with loaded smashed potatoes, and fell in love. The place has really not changed much since then. The menu has morphed a little over the years, and the name changed, but the quality of the food and our menu favorites have never been lacking. We have met new neighbors, old neighbors, prom goers, and we have even brought our little kids when our babysitter fell through! We recently moved back to KC from Las Vegas. This was always a favorite spot before and the food and service were still just as good. My wife loved their grilled salmon which they are famous for. We took some out of town friends here so it was a special occasion. Unfortunately, it was extremely disappointing. We didn't see a server for a while. When we finally did order drinks we didn't get them for probably 20 minutes. The waits continued with the food order and then getting the food. We thought it's ok because the food will be great, but it was not. We don't mind pricey as long as the food is outstanding. Husband and son got steaks that were way overcooked, but we had waited a while so ate what we got. Not only were they over-cooked but the cuts were awful. Honestly we were very surprised that it was THIS bad. It should probably be two stars but the atmosphere and environment was good. Sad to say but the overall experience was horrible. The food is always good. Back in the day my husband and I were Houston's devotees. When they closed shop there was a Hawaiian ribeye-sized hole in my heart. Then one magical day someone posted on Reddit that both J. Alexander's and Charleston's have a select few Houston's menu staples available. We tried J. Alexander's first. Here the Hawaiian Ribeye is called Steak Maui, but that flavor was unmistakable. I almost cried. The Grilled Chicken Salad with honey-lime vinaigrette and peanut sauce? At J. Alexnder's it's called the Thai Kai Salad and it is exactly the same as I remembered. The French Dip sandwich? Yeah, they have that. My adult children raved about the crispy chicken tenders and they each had enough to take home for another meal. The ambiance is upscale casual; nice enough for dates and family dinners. I am so grateful for the Redditor who clued me in. I thought I would have to travel far and wide to get these dishes again. My fries were crispy. mine was medium well,l not well done. I ordered a Dunkel a beer that I am extremely familiar with what was delivered was not, they have their labels incorrect for what was delivered that was removed from my table. UNFORTUNATELY we ran into the bartender with a horrible attitude - we ordered drinks while ordering dinner to go - not a smile, - no graciousness - like all other servers. Enjoyed a lunch date with a couple colleagues from work here recently! Since it was over the lunch hour, we anticipated it being a little busy...and it WAS!...so, we made a reservation. We checked in on time and were seated about ten minutes later. I'll address those with COVID concerns off the bat, since that's the hot topic of the day. Over the lunch hour, the place was packed, wall to wall, with minimal regard to extra spacing or partitioning. All associates were wearing masks in the correct manner. All but one patron I saw was masked while in transit around the facility. The menus were of reusable style, so if you don't trust someone else to sanitize, make sure you have some at the ready. On to the dining... Excellent options abound here, mostly of American and seafood fare. I went with salmon and the veggie of the day: cooked butternut squash. Food service was prompt, especially for one of their busiest parts of the day. All those at my table were thrilled with their selections. They aren't messing around with their desserts. According to our server, the carrot cake is the reason most people come back. This has been a mainstay in OP for as long as I can remember. I just don't know why it took me so long to dine here. I guess I always figured it was super expensive, compared to other sit down restaurants in Johnson County the prices are very comparable. I had a steak and it was spot on delicious and cooked the way I ordered it. My friend had a RARE prime rib, and it was really rare. they got that right too. And to top it off we had a very personable and bubbly server, I think she was one of the few in the industry that really loved her job. Besides the lack of interest in us being there and us being sat in her section, I'm pretty sure she duped us into ordering the wrong thing. The French Dip couldn't have been worse, oh, unless you were told to get it on the hamburger bun to really make it "sing". Oh, it sung alright, just not anything I wanted to listen to. Fries, hard to mess up...oh, unless they were ice cold. Garlic, sure...why not just find ALL of it and throw it on the broccoli to scare away even the biggest garlic lovers. Mashed potatoes...delicious, the second time around. I'd love to put all the blame on the server who might as well be holding an "exit this way" sign...but I don't think she was cooking anything, just recommending we order everything wrong. I stopped by for a curbside pick up on a Sunday night. Pretty easy system they have! I ordered online and once it was placed I was given a pick up time. Once you arrive you are instructed to call the restaurant and let them know. My salad was great! Lettuce, avocado, and tomatoes were all fresh. I really enjoyed the soft croutons , they truly made the meal special ! Tip: Arrive earlier than the pickup time given. Most likely it will be done sooner than the one given. read more

Usually love this restaurant and take my family there every year over the Christmas holidays. For the first time this year the food was horrible. The prime rib tasted like it had been soaked in salt all day. The steak au poivre was so fatty I had to go the restroom and spit it out. I was asked when I booked the reservation if we were celebrating anything-J Alexander's didn't recognize this celebration at all so it was pointless to ask. Our server was off though and the service we received wasn't what I expected for the amount of money I spent on the meal. Our food came out before the wine. Our water glasses were empty. She brought the wrong dessert out (but then brought the correct dessert after noticing her mistake). We didn't see her for a big chunk of time-not even helping other customers! All in all, I was satisfied with the food but the service was lacking and they certainly didn't make us feel special for dining with them.
