We had excellent service - attention when we needed it, but otherwise we were left to enjoy our conversation and dinner with friends. I had the Thai Kai Salad. This was fantastic! Great flavors and dressed really well. There is nothing worse than a soggy salad in my opinion. I would definitely order this again. Hubby had the French Dip and enjoyed it. My only disappointment was my Manhattan - my recommendation would be to just order wine. I asked that it be served up, so I was surprised to see ice chips floating in it and they did not use Luxardo cherries which matters to me. Usually love this restaurant and take my family there every year over the Christmas holidays. For the first time this year the food was horrible. The prime rib tasted like it had been soaked in salt all day. The steak au poivre was so fatty I had to go the restroom and spit it out. We went to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. I was asked when I booked the reservation if we were celebrating anything-J Alexander's didn't recognize this celebration at all so it was pointless to ask. Our food was very good-we both had a filet mingon. Cooked perfect and tasted great. Our server was off though and the service we received wasn't what I expected for the amount of money I spent on the meal. Our food came out before the wine. Our water glasses were empty. She brought the wrong dessert out (but then brought the correct dessert after noticing her mistake). We didn't see her for a big chunk of time-not even helping other customers! All in all, I was satisfied with the food but the service was lacking and they certainly didn't make us feel special for dining with them. It was a big deal to drop that kind of money on a meal and it was a big birthday that I wish could have been seen more. read more

I hadn't been to J. Alexander's in many years. The greeting at the door as well as the service were superb & our waitress, Peyton was phenomenal! Sorry, but I just cannot get Houston's out of my head. I love that place sooo much and miss them dearly. I thought of them throughout my evening there. I had queso spinach dip for an appetizer which was not very good or warm. It was just ok (doesn't hold a candle to Houston's spinach dip). I selected house salad, salmon & asparagus for dinner. All were really good. I topped things off with carrot cake for dessert. While there are similarities they are not Houston's by any means, but they are holding their own & for that I must give them their props. read more

100% of the stars in my rating are due to the nice and comfortable dining area and great service we received. 100% of the missing stars from my rating are due to the food. We had been trying to find a place that sounded good for Saturday lunch for a bit. We wanted to try something different. We'd never been here, but it always seems to have a crowd around, so figured we'd give it a try. It wasn't extremely busy but a few parties arrived kind of at the same time and it seemed to take a few minutes per party get them a seat picked out and get them seated. Maybe they were pacing things out on purpose, but it seemed a bit slow to get seated. In any case, we had a great server that was attentive and seemed to appear with perfect timing but without feeling like she was stalking us. I decided on a prime rib sandwich that comes with au jus and I chose fries as the side. Mom got a chicken sandwich of some sort with fries too. This is a nice looking place and the kitchen seemed to be staffed with chef-looking people. It's not super expensive but also not cheap so we were really confident that we were getting ready to have a fantastic lunch. It was truly, truly the most mediocre lunch I could have imagined. My sandwich had a generous portion of meat, but it was so flavorless, it was like it had been boiled to get the flavor out to use that flavor for something else. I was relieved that there was au jus to add flavor UNTIL I tasted the au jus and realized it was basically brown, salty water; possibly powdered broth mix. It tasted like I was eating at a hospital cafeteria. The fries were good. I don't like little dinky matchstick fries, but when you pay $21 for a sandwich with fries for lunch, you're going to eat them, especially when the actual PLATE has more flavor than your sandwich. The chicken on mom's sandwich appeared to have committed some crimes and was sentenced to death by overcooking. It was edible but she kind of just picked it apart and ate the chewy chicken. Thank goodness for our good waitress who was helpful at refilling our drinks because they were needed to choke down that food. When you drop over $50 on lunch and leave wishing that you'd just gone to McDonalds, there's something wrong. read more

When we arrived, it did not take long to be seated but it took 12 minutes to even be acknowledged by the server. The kitchen does not have any accommodations for allergies. Even though the steaks can be cooked without the butter or marinades, the cooks admit that there will be crosscontamination due to the oils that they use on the grills. People with corn or soy allergies, this is not the restaurant for you. I ordered the steak frites. It is a strip steak. The meat is pretty thick but that doesn't matter if it's super tough and undesireable. I did eat it because the steak was over $30. Not worth the money in my opinion. It tasted charred around the edges, and not in a good way. The melted butter was the only thing of flavor on the meat. The steak was cooked medium but still managed to be disappointing. The shoestring fries had plenty of flavor but managed to cool considerably from the kitchen to my table. Overall, I would say the meal was a meal. If you eat to live and like to spend a lot of money, come here. If you like to enjoy your food and the ambience, go somewhere else. S/n: It is way too dark in here but the candles on the tables help. Too bad I had practically beg to get our candle lit. (The decor is reminiscent of a dark hunting lodge.) read more

This J. Alexander's is declining in every way. I am a long time frequent customer and over the last year or so its taken a drastic downward turn. The last several visits I've noticed the beef is not the same quality, and they have forgotten how to grill to temperature. They dont present or explain the specials, and aren't maintaining any quality standards! The service is losing its attention to detail. Encapsulated, its just not great any more its just average! Come here all the time (few times a month) and its always good. Grateful to have a consistently good restaurant close to the office that everyone loves. Smoked salmon dip is legit. Entire family finally got vaccinated and so we were able to dine out for Mother's Day at J Alexanders. It's always been a favorite and it did not disappoint. Still as good as ever. We had Spinach con Queso dip and Calamari for apps and both were good. Then the steak special, ribs, rattlesnake pasta and my fave, Thai Kai Salad. Everyone loved their choices and we finished off with carrot cake and the lemon cheesecake. Both were delicious. Another SUPER thing about this place, they have a large pour for wine! I'm sure it's a good 6+ ounces because the glasses are large and come half full! Service was good, as always. We'll return soon. read more

Decided to try a new place for my birthday. The place is really intimate for a date night but also can cater to a large group/ family. The food was so yummy. Traditional American home style food. The clam chowder wasn't our favorite but our server, Ally, made up what it lacked. She was fast and efficient, attentive, super fun, and hilarious. We would come back just for her. One of my girlfriends suggested J. Alexander's for lunch yesterday. It is now called Overland Park Grill. I haven't been here awhile since my last experience. The ambiance and inside decor is still the same. It feels upscale, but inviting. Very nice place! We went yesterday around 11:30am with no reservations. We were seated at a booth in less than a minute. On a Wednesday, this place was so busy with lots of business type people and some dressed in suits. If we go on a Friday, we will definitely make reservations. I guess it's the place to be for a professional upscale luncheon. I would feel a little dressed down if I was in just shorts and a tshirt. But that's just me. I did see a few people that were dressed down, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. The servers looked like they treat everyone the same no matter how you are dressed. My friend ordered the Thai Kai salad, and I ordered the Asian Ahi Tuna salad with a Thai margarita. The prices are a little steep for lunch, but the quality is excellent. The service was great this time around. They were polite and very attentive. They don't rush you at all. My girlfriend and I were there for over an hour and a half, and no one made us feel like we needed to hurry and leave. Some people around us stayed even longer than we did. We had a great girl's lunch, and I would definitely start coming again since the service was amazing. Food was still very delicious. read more

I ordered a fillet before and asked for medium but when it came, it was so overcooked that I couldn't even cut it! Took my team here for dinner on a Wednesday and was pleasantly surprised by how busy and fun the atmosphere in the store was for a weekday. We had Steven as a server and he did a great job keeping our drinks full and answering any questions we had on the menu. We started off with a spinach queso dip which was delicious and a generous portion size. For dinner I chose to get the 10oz filet and it was Excellent!! Cooked a perfect med rare and seasoned beautifully. The rest of my table all loved their entrees as well. At the end of the meal one of the managers , Matt, even stopped by our table to introduce himself and make sure everything was great. Super impressed by this restaurant and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an upscale dinner date or business dinner. My husband and I made reservations for the Saturday after Valentine's Day. When we arrived and saw the number of people waiting I was not surprised. As we checked in they told us they were 30 minutes behind on reservations which didn't bother us too much as the people behind us who didn't have one were told the wait was 2.5 hours. It was to be expected on Valentine's weekend. To compensate, a waiter served a tray of croissants to all the guests waiting for a table which was nice. When we were called to our table we were immediately greeted by a server who took our drink menu and left and was immediately greeted by another server who took our appetizer order. I was surprised and delighted at the level of attentiveness of the staff. Now to the food. For appetizer we had the salmon dip which was good but be sure you like salmon as it is a cold dip and very smoky flavor. For our entrees my husband and I both got steak. Oh my word the steak portions were HUGE. I ate half of my steak and had the second half the next day for lunch. Mac and cheese came with my KC Strip and was delicious. For dessert, we were recommended the carrot cake. It came out in a large piece that was warmed and probably my favorite part of the meal. Best carrot cake I've ever had. read more

J. Alexander's is one of those places that when you're in the mood, it totally hits the spot! I'm a major hamburger fan, but here, the veggie burger is actually one of my favorites! It's a hearty, homemade veggie burger... very unlike any veggie burger I've ever had. It always has a nice thick piece of cheese on top, and a good soft bun. The shoestring fries are also on point, as is the Caesar salad with cornbread croutons. The one downside of J. Alexander's is that it's a bit pricey. I'm all for a nice meal, and because I love he food here, it's usually worth it. That said, for upscale American fare, there are definitely certain items that could be taken down just a smidge as it relates to price. read more
