We are occasional diners at their Plantation restaurant. But we will not be returning... They have started to make the "suggested" tip based on the Total that includes tax, not the Sub-Total as has been standard in the business for years and years. This is completely disingenuous as most people don't even bother to look and just click the tip percentage button without checking to see what they are tipping on. And J Alexanders knows this! I questioned two managers after our dinner. The first manager had no clue what I was even talking about, the second (more senior) manager knew exactly what I was talking about. He didn't try to deny it, all he said was that this is something being done at the corporate level. As if dining out isn't expensive enough these days, now you have to look out for the restaurants trying to jam you for more money. Sorry J Alexanders, you've lost a customer read more

Came here for a date night/belated birthday celebration for my husband. It was easy to make a reservation online and thankfully I did because at 6:30 on a Friday evening the wait time for a table was an hour long. We had a reservation and still had a short wait, that's how busy it was. It's great to see this spot doing so well. When we sat down we got a special menu that said happy birthday, which was a nice touch! I ended up ordering off of the special menu, the Tuscan steak, which was phenomenal. To start the meal, I got an espresso martini. I love that it came with a sidecar, basically a two for one deal. My husband got the doppelganger, he loves whiskey, and it was delicious. The steak for dinner was a perfect choice and the smashed potatoes were great. The Palermo chicken was also very good. I don't like goat cheese, but I tried it and enjoyed. The white chocolate raspberry cheesecake ended our evening. They gave that to us as a birthday treat, which was unexpected but another special touch. It was delicious. We had not been to J. Alexander's in a few years (too busy trying new restaurants). And a friend's raving about it made me want to try it again. Hubby and I were surprised at how packed the place was on a Tuesday at noontime. It was full and buzzing with activity. We were seated promptly and got a lovely server, Gina. We tried the fried calamari rings appetizer, which was so good I could have just eaten the entire plate of squid all by myself for lunch. Hubby got a steak burger, which boasted tenderloin and ribeye. I opted for my friend Scott's favorite meal, Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter. Both came with crispy shoestring fries. The chicken also came with a mound of delicious cole slaw. I am not a red meat lover, but the burger was very tasty and was probably my favorite of the two proteins. We shared the burger and the cole slaw, ate a few pieces of the chicken planks (tender and crispy), and left the others, along with a whole lot of fries, to take home for dinner. We also opted for a piece of carrot cake to go, we were too full to eat any more but had to try it. It was good, but hubby didn't like the coconut or nuts in it. (I liked the coconut.) This place is incredible. I really enjoy coming here as a date night with my husband. There's always a wait time so I suggest making a reservation. However, even with a reservation you can still be asked to wait for your table. The food though is great. More often than not my husband and I always order a filet mignon. We had a team since one of the servers was being trained. Our drinks were constantly replenished without us having to ask, empty plates were quickly removed. Dinner service was excellent! The only disappointment was when we ordered coffee and dessert. Our coffees came out quickly but there was a long wait for our carrot cake. By the time we got the carrot cake our coffee was cold. Honestly, I'm really surprised I've never tried this place before. I was craving a burger and my girlfriend told me that this place makes the best fries since they are thin instead of a potato cut into four. Oh man was she right. Food - we came hungry & we ordered quite a bit for our party (but we did take some back home for some tasty leftovers). Appetizer - Smoked Salmon Dip, Deviled Eggs & Hong Kong Shrimp. All were absolutely delicious. The Smoked Salmon Dip was fresh & loved the slivers of onions mixed into the dip. The Deviled Eggs were whipped & airy with just enough seasoning to compliment the outer egg white. Topped with some sweet bacon & this was a home run on the table! The Hong Kong Shrimp (think Bang Bang Shrimp) wasn't too heavily coated so it wasn't overpowering all the other tastes. Main Meal - Steak & Fries, Prime Rib & Chicken Pasta Soup. The steak & fries were brought out hot & crispy. Seasoned just right & cooked to perfection. The Prime Rib was more than enough for 1 person so I managed to take some home which was the BEST leftovers I ever had! It was melt in your mouth buttery tasting! I was also able to save half of a baked potato which that on it's own was another meal! The Chicken Pasta Soup was a bit watery but it did not take away from the flavor. Dessert - OH MY! Bread Pudding & Very Best Chocolate Cake! I am a lover of bread pudding. While this one was quite delicious it was missing my favorite drizzle which is sweetened condensed milk. The berry preserve syrup was a nice variation. However, can we talk about this chocolate heaven Bundt cake? Warm, moist, spongy & tasty!!! One of those things that you better make sure you don't inhale it before actually fully tasting it. OH ME OH MY! Cocktail - they have several variations of an old fashion so this made me quite happy! However, and the only reason I didn't give this review 5 stars, they do not offer happy hour at this location. I was a bit bummed because we have done HH at their other location & it's great! I've been a loyal customer here for years and eat here almost every week, but today's experience was unacceptable. We came in on a Sunday at 3 PM with a party of seven. The hostess told us to wait 45 minutes to be seated. Fine. Then another hostess suddenly told us we couldn't be seated for the rest of the night. So which is it? No apology. No explanation. J's is purely amazing. Came here for a happy hour with co-workers and this place did not disappoint. When you walk in you have a big area and the hostess is there to welcome you in. The place is somewhat dim but decorated nicely with lights all around. You have a view of the bar and the kitchen which is really cool because you see them making the food fresh. They had Mahi Mahi as their catch of the day. It comes with 2 sides - I chose the loaded smashed potatoes and the butternut squash. The sauce on top was light creamy and had capers on top the fish was grilled perfectly and tasted amazing. The loaded smashed potatoes have actual chunks of bacon on it, some pieces are really crispy and gave the potatoes a nice crunch. They give you a big serving of potatoes which is great. Now the butternut squash was beyond amazing it had cinnamon on top and it paired perfectly with the Mahi and the potatoes. One piece was a bit undercooked but that's ok! Still a great plate overall. Well J Alexander's never disappoints. It was my daughter's birthday had a reservation for 7:00 and was seated quickly. Ordered a few martinis which were made perfectly. We started with a salmon dip that was very tasty. I ordered Cypress Salad with crispy chicken, avocado with cornbread croutons so yummy. My husband ordered the prime rib with mash potatoes. Cooked to perfection pink and moist. Potatoes were buttery and piled high. Lastly the birthday girl ordered Palermo chicken which was fried with goat cheese sun dried tomatoes served with Couscous and broccoli. Prime Rib is why we go here, today we ordered the prime upgraded from standard 12 oz to add 3oz = 15oz , a thicker cut. The order was for a temperature of medium rare, while the cooking temp seemed correct, the fatty content of the meat seemed extra lean, which made the meat tougher than normally expected for a prime rib. The house salad, with Blue cheese, very large, enough to share The Craft Ale beer from local brewery Funky Buddha was nice. The mound of smashed potatoes were exceptional. The staff was super friendly and we were seated almost as soon as we walked in by some friendly hostesses! The interior of the restaurant is very nice and they have a central seating location as well as a couple steps uo and then more booths around the edges of the place. The lighting is very nice and it's the perfect spot between bright and dim. Our waitress was super friendly and took our orders super fast. We decided to get the deviled eggs for an appetizer. They were heavenly and the bacon bit one the top was sweet and gave it a nice crunch. The filling was light as well and flavorful without being too creamy. For my main, I ordered the steak and fries, medium rare. It came out rather quick, cooked PERFECTLY. The steak cut beautifully and the butter sauce they use on top was divine. Everything about it was superb and I even had leftovers because of how big it was. For dessert we got the carrot cake. It was amazing and now I see why it's their best selling. Who knew that I would love this place? My team gave me a gift card for my birthday in June and I didn't make it there until October! The service was top notch and the vibe in the restaurant was very chic and chill. We had the deviled eggs as our appetizer. They were perfect! For my main course, I had the baby back ribs with the NYO mac and cheese and coleslaw. The ribs were tender and delicious, with a light and mildly sweet fruit based bbq sauce. Mmmmmm! The NYO (Not Your Ordinary) mac and cheese was also very good. The coleslaw was perfectly done. Very fresh and the dressing was light and sweet without being overpowering. So so good! Had an excellent lunch here with my son and I'm already looking forward to going back! We started with the deviled eggs which were very good and I had the French dip and he had the steak 'n fries. My French dip was one of the best I've ever had. It was loaded with rare roast beef and it had some horseradish sauce on it. The au jus for dipping was perfectly seasoned and so delicious. It came with a pile (literally a pile) of shoestring fries that was perfectly seasoned and crispy. My son really enjoyed his steak and it was cooked to the perfect temperature. We both ended up bringing half of our meals home. For dessert we ordered the carrot cake which was served warm. This was the best carrot cake I've ever eaten, the cream cheese frosting was to die for! It was such a huge piece we ended up taking most of it home for later. Definitely make a reservation. The place was busy. Our friends arrived and waited in their car for our meeting time to get closer to reserve a table just before us arrived. They found out when they went in, it would be an hour wait. So we waited the hour va going somewhere else. The bar was packed. Our waitress was super hyped and excited about telling us about the specials. I forgot her name unfortunately. The place is loud however once seated, we were able to hear each other. The food was good. Everyone enjoyed what they had. Ribs, salads, baked potatoes, fish all great! The creamed spinach was not edible. It was awful. We enjoy creamed spinach and this was not it. One bite and I knew not to eat it. The server removed it off the bill. I let her know about the terrible flavor, however she said she asked the kitchen and this was their special they made. As an often solo business traveler, I sit at the bar for dinner a lot, and the staff here understands how to get a drink in your hand fast, unlike so many other places that don't understand how to make money and happy people.
