Hitting on all cylinders! We didn't have huge expectations but they were exceeded in every aspect. It's new so we expected some bumps, there were few, if f any. It's rockin' busy so despite the soft decorative additions, it LOUD. Success breeds noise, some will revel in that, my 80 yo parents... not so much. Service is spot on! Took my friend there for her birthday. She has been there several times but this was my first and last. We were the first customers on Wednesday . Upon entering, the restaurant smells like sewage . We sat at the bar area... the waitresses/ bartenders energy was idk... blah. We ordered two lemon drop martinis. They tasted more like lemonade. My friend usually orders this when she comes and said it didn't taste the same as other times. We ordered an appetizer , cheese steak egg rolls . They were fine but took about 30 min to get to the table. I wasn't impressed and for sure was not paying those prices for sub par service and a sewage smell. Two men came in after us sat down and asked for smelling salt! The server asked how the drinks were, I said they were just ok... she didn't offer to remake them till I asked for them to be removed from the bill. The cheese dip was bad, it didn't sit on chip well. The taste was just okay. The ribs were okay and didn't have enough sauce. The steak was just okay. The price was $$$. I've always enjoyed J. Alexander's in several different cities. Some of my best dining out memories have taken place in a J. Alexander restaurant. I was excited to see there was one opening in Annapolis as I travel there often. I finally made it over, found a seat at the bar and was greeted immediately. In a time when great bar service seems to be forgotten, J. Alexander's nails it. You will never want for anything and the service is perfect, not too polite but far from casual. I used to always order the Seared Ahi tuna with Orzo and Wild Rice. First, in the early 2000's this was my gateway into appreciating sushi, second, the Orzo and Wild Rice could be the last meal I ever eat and I would die happy. I hadn't been to J. Alexander's since before Covid so I was curious if it would be the same. The good and the bad (in my opinion), the good was the Orzo and Wild Rice was just as I remembered it, perfectly seasoned al dente goodness. The bad, the tuna was no longer a steak but a few little cubes on a skewer. If you know tuna you know that it can't be overcooked, when you put it on a skewer it not only cooks from the outside quickly but the inside as the metal skewer heats up. It wasn't horrible but not the best. If you're in the area give them a try, their salads are phenomenal as well. I won't return for the tuna but will go back. read more

We have eaten here a few times and the food was good. However, we ate there recently and ordered the steak rolls. They were flavorless and were missing many of the ingredients that made it sound so delicious on the specials menu. The meat was chopped so much we couldn't tell if it was steak or ground beef. They were also very greasy. We both left half of our meals uneaten, which we never do. When we entered the restaurant there was a strong smell of bleach and other cleaning products. We really should have turned around and gone somewhere else. I doubt we'll be back. read more

I had such an amazing dining experience. Sarah D. was my waitress and she was fabulous. She made excellent food and cocktail suggestions. The calamari was delicious and the pork chop was the best pork chop that I have ever had. It was marinated and cooked to perfection. So tender and juicy and the apricot sauce was to die for. This was my first time to J. Alexander's in Annapolis and it will not be my last. This restaurant is set up beautifully with the bar in the front, some tables in the middle and booths located throughout the restaurant. I love the open kitchen concept in that you can see the chefs preparing your food. Our server Katie was phenomenal! Literally, we now have her work schedule and will be back when she is working. She provided us with some great options and not a single one missed. We had the calamari, Hong Kong shrimp, filet mignon, and the chicken crispers. We also ordered the fudge cake for dessert. When I say every single dish was a 10, I mean it. Everything was seasoned perfectly. We also ordered the Doppleganger from the bar. It's a bourbon drink that I would have loved to have a few to 10 more of, but as the driver that wasn't going to happen that night. I highly highly highly recommend you check this place out. We had a ladies lunch at J. Alexander's today to celebrate a birthday. It was a lovely experience. They gave us a booth as we requested, on the upper level near the glassed- in kitchen. Two of us ordered glasses of wine, and we shared an order of calamari. It was very tasty, tender & with a light coating and marinara sauce. I ordered the Thai Kai salad, my friend ordered the lobster roll, which looked delicious & came with fries, and the third person ordered a shrimp dish. We had refills on the wine, but we were too stuffed for dessert. The team even had a birthday card for the one friend we were celebrating. It was a lovely lunch. read more

The restaurant is nicely decorated and the tables and booths are spaced apart which is appreciated. I like the overall vibe and the staff is friendly. We went today for Father's Day had an enjoyable experience overall. For apps we shared the fried calamari, spinach queso, and the steak egg rolls which were on the special daily menu (so they aren't available on the regular menu). The calamari was crispy, fresh and delicious. The queso and the egg rolls lacked flavor. Everyone was in salad and burger moods today so we had cheese burgers with fries; a salad with blackened salmon; and a caprese salad with grilled chicken. The salads were fresh and delicious, but my daughter said her salmon was extremely salty. Everyone enjoyed the cheeseburgers and said they had good flavor but they didn't cook one of them to the requested temperature. Thus, if you don't like well done burgers you might want to emphasize it to the server. The mashed potatoes and french fries were too salty to eat unfortunately. For dessert we shared the key lime pie and the chocolate cake. Both desserts were disappointing. The cake was moist but it lacked richness and could have used a lot more chocolate sauce. The key lime was sweet and lacked lime flavor. No one ate theirs bc we're used to pie that taste authentic and has a little bit of tartness. The calimari was wonderful -- perfectly seasoned & fried, yet still tender calimari and the marinara was yummy. Portion was good as an appetizer for 2-3 people. The shoestring fries that came with most meals were also delicious & crispy with good seasoning. I had high hopes for the Cypress Salad & while it was beautiful to look at (and a good portion of avocado), it was way overdressed/soggy and also lacked flavor. I couldn't find the bacon and the chicken, while tasty, appeared to have been torn by hand versus sliced or cut. The cornbread croutons though, were my favorite bite of the day. Yum! It was also hard to find our server -- over a 90-min period, I ended up asking for a water refill 3x before getting it (also at the same time we had to find them to get our check). This place is a new edition to the Annapolis area. I've been wanting to check it out for awhile and tonight was the night. We got there a little past 7 with no reservation. We checked in at the front and was told it would be a 45 min wait. The restaurant was packed, but I learned a long time ago the suggested time is rarely accurate. True to form 45 minutes was really closer to 20. We were seated in the bar area, which I'm never a huge fan of. Although, the area was packed, it didn't feel too crowded. Our server was really attentive and knowledgeable. He made helpful suggestions and was honest when asked questions. We ordered calamari as a starter. Pretty good. Nice portion and not overly oily. We both ordered the steak and fries. Unless I'm at a highly rated steak house, I usually order my steak a degree cooler. Thankfully I did. Temperature wise it came out perfectly. The flavor was just ok. Nothing overly exciting, but nothing to complain about either. All in all a pretty good way to spend a Friday night. Had to see what had replaced GB...and although the great beer was missing, this was a fantastic restaurant with terrific staff and absolutely delicious menu! From the numerous martini's consumed to the appetizers and perfectly presented entrees - this was a wonderful dining experience. Gabby was a very attentive wait staff without being a helicopter. All the staff was working as a team, as our "test" for! that was noting that our empty plates were removed (after asking!) almost immediately by anyone that passed our booth. I was thoroughly impressed with their cocktails, strong but balanced and they even give you a little extra in a separate glass so it's like getting two drinks! Well worth the price. For this visit, we had a simple but sweet but tart lemon drop and a strong Fleur-De-Lis martini. For the entree, we tried the Palermo Chicken - a heaping helping of a pan fried chicken breast, goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes and beurre blanc sauce - so good! Perfectly seasoned and just delicious. They were out of broccoli so I had a side of mac and cheese which was cheesy and piping hot when it arrived to the table - I'd definitely order the same entree again. I made the mistake of swapping the couscous for mashed potatoes, while the potatoes were good they needed some butter and salt! However we did try the pork tenderloin which came with a sweet Thai "bang bang" sauce and had the mac and cheese (again, they were out of broccoli) so we tried the couscous and oh my, probably the best couscous I've ever had. We had heard good things about J. Alexanders and decided to give it a try, as it was a successor to Gordon Biersch. I ordered their New England style clam chowder and a French dip sandwich. That usually thick clam chowder was thin and watery. The diced potato pieces were not full cooked and the clam was very sparse.
