I always enjoy coming here when I'm in Detroit. It's great American comfort food. The last time I came here back in 2019 I was eating meat and got a turkey burger and the key lime pie and it was slamming!! So recently in June and July I was in town and came back and it's still on point! I'm a vegetarian now and I always give veggie burgers a chance. The waiter told me it was made from beets and other veggies but you didn't taste it. He was right! It was a win!! It had the chargrilled taste a real burger had and it was super delicious!! I also got the carrot cake which was okay and the Mac n cheese I'd say was not all that great. It's not the southern Mac n cheese that your momma or grandma would make but it's all in what you like. Thinking about this review since Feb 6th, nearly a week thinking about if I wanted to give J. Alexanders a 2 or 3. I finally settled on 2 and these are the reasons. I ordered a $34.00 ribeye that had so many pockets of fat, I was able to stockpile the fat on the side of my plate. It was almost half of one side of the steak. The steak was so much work just to chew it, I finally just gave up. I really, really wanted to finish it. One, it was my birthday, two I was with my husband that embarrasses quite easily. He didn't want me to complain and actually he had the filet and was happy. This is one reason I contemplated the 2 or 3, but that was not my experience, it was his. I asked the waiter for a recommendation, the smashed potato's or the baked potato. The waiter told me the crowd favorite was the smashed, apparently I don't fit in the with the crowd. They were smashed alright, but where was the depth? They were literally smashed potatoes. On the other hand, my husbands baked potato was good, but it was his and not mine. The service: when we first sat down and I mean before our bums hit the seat this waiter popped up and said "would you like to order "some appetizer", I don't recall what it was, but he didn't bother to explain or say anything before asking. It was just weird. Were we supposed to come in knowing that we wanted this appetizer? Like I said, when I said "um no" and very uncomfortable, he didn't catch I had no idea what he was talking about. Okay, so the rest of the service was sub-par, no bread, no real attention, just casual looks. I did ask for bread after being there for 20 minutes and they brought out some very unappealing medium texture cold bread. I guess I have a problem with an expensive restaraunt having such poor steak, poor bread, and poorly trained servers. This is not to say that I have never had a good meal here. There is a shrimp entree that I remember was quite tasty, and the ambiance, the bar and the location is all very nice. If you want to know, I did not get an adjustment for my steak. However, the waiter did ask if there was something else he could get me, like dessert, but I was just ready to leave. It was my birthday and this was my meal. Anyway, I clearly ate half of it, and I did confess that I tried, but I just could not get thru it. The waiter offered the best apology he could, it was a little condescending coming from someone half my age, but he said that ribeyes are typically fattier. This is true, but does that mean that it should be rubbery and chewy? Is there not a cooking technique that may be missing? I hear that it has more connective tissue and if you don't cook it at high enough temperatures, the result can be what I experienced. J. Alexander's I think you should step up and serve very good cuts of meat or reduce the price. Maybe that is fine for a $12.00 steak...no thanks, but it is not fair to charge those prices and offer this type of service or food. read more

Bryan was our server. He was professional and kept our used dishes picked up (so many restaurants don't do that). He was most attentive. He is an asset to the restaurant. Our dinner was amazing and Bryan made it so. I had the salmon, my favorite and aaron had the cajun trout. It was the best!! We will be back soon! read more

Food and drinks are always solid. I am a fan of the Alex Salad and Pear martini. The 248 is pretty tasty as well. I am torn on this place because of their history of treating minorities bad in the past. I had a very bad experience about 3 years ago. I don't go anywhere near as frequent anymore. However, I know that if judging on food and drinks alone then it is a solid choice. You can NOT go wrong on the martinis, steak maui, and cheeseburger. Enjoy! read more

Eh, this was my first time at J Alexander's and I think it'll be my last. It's a Sunday afternoon, I get it but SHEESH. My wait time to be seated wasn't bad at all and the hostess is great. We were sat down and a waitress explains this isn't her section but she's helping and would get our drinks. Unfortunately the only anejo is Avion, and they were missing a lot of juice so a lot of the other drinks couldn't be made. Drinks okay boom, I've never been anywhere where I actually finished the drink before I saw my waitress. She finally comes to the table and takes our order. I notice the table next to me gets there food, but i has been waiting a good while before my order was taken so I can't even imagine how long they were waiting to begin with. We stop the waitress to order more drinks. Hilarious because she then ask do we want to put our order in because we've been sitting so long with nothing. I look at her confused and before I can even say we already ordered, the calamari comes out. We've seen other tables get tired of waiting and leave. Baby it was HELL from there. The calamari was good and crunchy the sauce was salty as hell though. We waiting a bit more and have to ask about the food. It comes out and it's not cooked the way I requested at all. We wanted medium with a charred crust/charred outside. It was damn near rare and that marinade is disgusting. The other steak tasted better but it wasn't cooked right either- rare and no crust. Requested the broccoli to be double steamed so it would be soft and baby when I tell you it was hard as a Vlasic Pickle... Sent it back and the next steak that came out was said to be a ribeye but sure as shit looked like a New York strip. By that time i had to ask for the waitress because babygirl just didn't have It together. I think it was her 2nd week? Anywho, they had no more unmarinated steak so I ate nothing but calamari and was highly pissed being as though I didn't eat all day. The only compensation i was offered was free dessert. Ive never had a bad dish or experience at this location. The only thing that I do hate is having to wait to eat food. I strongly suggest reservations when they are available. On to the food! Prime rib, Awesome!!! Ribeye splendid!!! Roasted half chicken seasoned to perfection. Burgers are top shelf! If you're feeling like a kid the chicken tenders are great. I've also had several fish dishes that leave you wanting more. You really can't miss here, for dessert you absolutely MUST try the carrot cake! I promise you will not be disappointed. We came here on a Sunday night and got seated right away. Our waiter was great and very attentive. He made menu recommendations, and we decided on calamari and each of us got a steak. The calamari was perfectly cooked and the sauces were delicious, the waiter recommended a horse radish sauce that was really good! Our steaks were cooked and seasoned perfectly. A group of 3 women with a baby came and were seated near us. They were loud, and the baby screamed nonstop. They actually encouraged the baby! Management should have done something. I've only been here a couple times but I definitely don't have anything bad to say about this place. When you go to a nicer restaurant you always want to have good service and I am never disappointed when I come here but not only that at this location it's really nice because the bar is off to the right so you're not in a busy area. The bartenders are very attentive super quick at making drinks and the martini menu is amazing! Not only are the martinis strong but they also give you the Sidecar with it too so you get a full servings worth. I love their prime rib sandwich and deviled eggs- with bacon-- delightful and a nice take. Their ribs are also delicious and if you like ribs they are a must try. I wasn't impressed with this particular visit. I ordered online and was given a pickup time, honestly they should text when it's ready. I came inside for a pickup and it's same line for pickup as the host stand. They really need to handle that better, I shouldn't have to wait for seating at the host stand to pickup my carry out. People that were in the curbside were also getting frustrated and coming inside, because no one was delivering the curbside. On April 30, 2024, I was here for lunch dining alone. The food was good. When I was done, the waitress, who said she was new, gave me the bill and I paid it with a $100 bill. When she came back she sat some money on the table without the bill or the bill holder/jacket that it was in. When I picked up the money it was short $20. I went where she was and confronted her and asked for my bill and the rest of my money. She hurried to respond and said she would give me the money back. She had the money and my bill folded up in her front apron pocket. I didn't get a chance to report her because I was late for a meeting. However, I called today and asked to speak to a manager and I was left on hold for 15 minutes before I hung up. That says a lot. Pay attention! J. Everything is super expensive, very few items are under $15 and none of the entrees are. I ordered a salad to split with my daughter because everything was so expensive. When they brought it and I asked for another plate I was told I'd be charged $6 extra for splitting the dish! They said that policy is on the menu, but that's something that should be mentioned at the time of ordering the food (and I didn't see it on the menu). But maybe my waitress didn't know better since it was her first time in the floor. They only have one vegetarian dinner option, the veggie burger, which is super salty. I miss the free croissants they used to give, that was my favorite part of the meal. However, the chocolate cake is excellent and tastes like homemade! I ate lunch here while in town for work. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the lovely presentation, even sitting at the bar. Think: napkin place settings, large wine glasses half full, etc. I ordered the weekly special, a panko breaded chicken sandwich on rosemary focaccia with Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It came with fries but the bartender gladly replaced those with the fresh vegetable: the roasted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. This sandwich was CRAZY delicious! The chicken was pounded flat, and the sandwich was sliced in three. If you've ever had a chicken sandwich where the chicken slides clear out of the bun midway, you know why this is a very smart kitchen decision. The veggies were roasted perfectly and made me excited to eat vegetables. Seeing as I ate more than was strictly necessary and left in a food coma, I'd say that this place aced it. The staff looks really busy but your service takes too long to bring drinks and take orders. They are not familiar with the house specialty drink recommendation from the bar. I had the rib dinner. They were roasted, dry and boney. The fries were tasteless and the Cole slaw was dry as well. I expect to have an edible dinner for this kind of money.
