I always have good service when I dine in here , I place online orders at the Livonia location with zero issues . I enjoy their steaks ( great deal and delicious ) and their Ahi tuna salad . I am disappointed in this particular chain though. During holiday shopping, I placed an order since I was nearby at Kohl's and it the online que estimated my order to be ready in 20 min ( it was at 3:45 , so not peak dinner hour) When I arrived at that time they said they were working on it. 30 minutes later, they told me that the ticket did not go through and even though I placed the order online it was not communicated to the chefs . I was told online my order will take 20 minutes and I ended up waiting almost 55 minutes. They apologized , but did nothing to compensate and make it better . I believe this is poor customer service and will direct all my buisiness to Livonia even if its a further drive for me. read more

I finally made my way to J. Alexander's after being in the area for a few years and hearing several people talk about their experience. The pricing is a little up there, so I only see this being a restaurant for super-special occasions - but I had a good time nonetheless. My experience didn't start well as we were seated and then forgotten about for about 10-15 minutes. Then, there was an awkward stage of being greeted by a few different waitresses as each had their own task (drinks, appetizers, entree). Also, we were super disappointed to find out that they were 'out' of the Smoked Salmon Dip - which was the reason we came. I'd call ahead if you were looking forward to this. After all of that, our food came, and everything was pretty good. We ended up getting the Spinach Queso Dip as an appetizer (instead of the Smoked Salmon Dip) and albeit good, it would be nice if they had homemade chips instead of using some out of a bag for the price I was paying for that appetizer. I got the Chicken Finger Platter with fries and macaroni and cheese as my sides and everything was great! Plenty of food at a decent price point for a restaurant like this. The honey mustard was pretty good - and I hate anything mustard-related - so, that's saying something. Our main waitress was super nice and very attentive after the initial awkwardness of different hostesses and servers coming to the table. I also felt bad as the table next to us kept sending food and drinks back and declaring that they are regulars and demanded better service like they remember "from last time". Tried the swordfish special today with roasted Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. Swordfish was prepared well (not overcooked like fish usually is) and was served with a nice bernaise style sauce. The mashed potatoes had apparently been sitting around for awhile and were a bit cold. Nice portion sizes for the sprouts and potatoes. Service was ok, but could've been more attentive. Food overall is very good, but very expensive for what you get. I rate the good quality a 4, service a 3 and value a 2. Too expensive for a family, but fine for two people. Menu also seems a bit limited, probably due to COVID. I'm also getting tired of the one menus, especially in a nicer place like this. Horrible service! Went for my mother's 85 birthday and everything went wrong! Had to send a steak back 3 times to get well done. Each time it came back it was bright red when you cut into it. We were ordering dessert when my uncle was reordering the steak for the 3rd time. Plates were never cleared and when asked to clear the plates it was not As if we were asking a lot. The manager was not very compassionate and a little sarcastic. No birthday candle and no acknowledgment of my mother's 85th birthday. This would of never happened at the Troy location. Atmosphere was awesome and the food was amazing! First time at this location and I must say I think it's my favorite one. The swordfish was cooked to perfection. Salmon is always good. This location has literally gone to shit. The food isn't bad here, but the service is absolutely terrible. Not only that, they microwave all their sides now! Why come to a restaurant if your going to use the microwave to cook? Especially items like couscous or the rotisserie chicken being microwaved, those types of food should NOT be microwaved. When we told the server to not microwave our food...his response? "Then how do you want it cooked...that is what we use." Wow! We quickly walked out and went to the other location in Livonia. When we told our waitress at the Livonia location to not use the microwave...her response? "We can definitely do that, no problem." She also mentioned that that is a popular request these days. I've decided to go with two stars today because I believe this restaurant is good, but as several bad days. I decided to go with the traditional steak and fries. The fries were delicious, but the steak was medium well and one of the most dry steaks I've ever had. I couldn't believe I was paying $30 for a dry steak and french fries. The service was alright, but since closing time was rapidly approaching I can understand. Leaving J. Alexander's, I found myself taking home my entire steak and probably won't eat it at all. Came here for my birthday with my family, and it was delightful. I've been to this restaurant a good amount of times, due to the deliciousness of the steak Maui. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very classy, so bring someone you'd like to impress! We started with the deviled eggs, which we've never gotten before. The bacon garnish was very sweet, and balanced perfectly with the creamy egg yolk mixture and the egg itself. Only came with 6 egg halves unfortunately, but very delicious to say the least. I got a glass of red wine, which I cant remember the name. It was decent. There was sediment sitting at the bottom of my glass, which I think meant I got the bottom of the bottle. Anyways, I got the steak Maui and so did most of my family. Someone did get the salmon and another got a blackened shrimp dish, both of which were quality seafood. The steak Maui has an amazing marinade that is very sweet and flavorful. Huge fan as always. I got a side of smashed potatoes and Cole slaw as well. The smashed potatoes were a tiny bit dry, but very good still. The Cole slaw had a poppyseed flavor to it, which I wasn't the biggest fan of but again didn't mind either. Let me start off by putting this into perspective: I've never written a review for chicken strips in my entire life until today. I was craving... I had a FEVA for hand battered chicken strips and I got the chicken tender dinner after finding this place so close to my hotel (I'm in town for work for the month) and I was SO happy I chose this place. My vision didn't only include the best chicken strips in the area, because I'm extra and I dare to dream that I could also find the best Mac and Cheese in the same place which is typically an unrealistic dream in most scenarios but sometimes.. sometimes you come across a place like this where no matter what you order it's going to be a hit. Now don't get me wrong.. I know that one would expect a steakhouse with steakhouse prices to make everything good but that is where you are wrong. I have been to steakhouses that cut corners on other items of the menu and only spend money on the quality higher priced items and have been disappointed as a result, But this place makes every meal no matter what you are ordering feel like a steak dinner, including the massive portions. The portions were HUGE- the chicken, mac and cheese and steamed broccoli was better than I would ever expect for such a "simple" meal. I was able to eat for the next 2 days off of my leftovers. The in-house ranch dressing was so good that I bought a $5 large container of it to go (when in the Midwest).... I may or may not have done shots of it when I got home (I cannot confirm or deny). This is going to be my weekly spot when I want to really treat myself after work for a week well done. I can check off my list that I found a go to for an excellent dinner. I've been here many times, but this review is for this specific visit in late May of 2022. I visited for an early dinner with 0lans to hopefully grab a seat in the bar area. Fortunately, a seat was available with no wait. The bar tender immediately acknowledged me and asked if I wanted anything to drink. Of course I order my usual, Maker's Mark neat with a glass of Ice water. The environment at the bar is always generally pleasant with beautiful people and good conversation. While the bar was full (hell its usually full) , but this particular time the service seemed a bit delayed. Something I tolerated. When my food arrived, I wasn't as pleased as I had been in the past. My loaded baked potato was dry and came with no butter and minimal sour cream. Remember, I asked for fully loaded. My experience at this J-Alexanders had been great in the past. This place is not what it used to be. I came in as a walk in. 4 employees were huddled into the hostess booth. None acknowledged my presence for 1-2 minutes. They were talking to each other and taking calls. Finally, I was greeted. The hostess asked me to move forward so that someone can take me to the table. I was not sure what that meant until finally someone came to me to take me to the table. What bugged me the most was how uninterested the greeters were in making eye contact or say hi or anything. I come here all the time but this time the service wasn't so well. It wasn't that busy or anything out of the ordinary. Water wasn't given until we asked 15 mins later of being seated. Chicken was missing on one of the salads until we asked for it. Dressing was missing as well. They brought it after we asked for it but just wasn't on top of things. Also the pepper shaker that was at our table was empty and we told them. They didn't bring us one until we asked again 15 mins later. We also got a chicken pasta soup to go, the container was not filled all the way and we asked about it they said the general serving is just one scoop and that is where it fills up to. It has been almost a year since I been back to this location. Not only is the service the same (terrible) but the food is bad to. After being seated we placed our orders and our server disappeared. This isn't a j Alexander's that you can ask any server for something you might need as servers don't give you the time of day. I try to raise my voice and say "excuse me" but no one gives you their attention. Our server kept passing by our table looking at the floor and no matter how loud I was trying to get her attention, she would not look up. I had to get up out of my seat twice during our dinner to do the servers job for her. Another server brought out our food, asked if we needed anything else and I stated she forgot a couple sides we asked for... The server left, never brought the forgotten sides back. Our French fries on both orders we almost raw and not cooked, so I had to put both orders of fries on a plate and walk them to the kitchen to the manager on expo asking them to make sure our fries are actually cooked. After walking back to my seat I was furious at this point because I still did not have my sides I ordered twice. A manager named Molly who is so rude brings the fries to our table eventually. We didn't touch our already cold dinners. My wife asked to have hers boxed up because she lost her appetite, I asked my untouched meal to be taken off the bill. Molly who was being incredibly fake asks "is there something I can do?" Well, for starters you can make the service staff do their job, next, she could have offered a dessert or appetizer complementary for our next visit in an attempt to make up for our destroyed dinner experience that night, but no, she offered nothing. Instead she asks the guest to tell her how she should do her job.. so we paid our bill and left. We come home and immediately get a notice from open-table that J Alexander's sent them notice that we did not show up for our dinner reservation so we could not get our points. We feel Molly had purposely did that out of spite. So I called J Alexander's and who picks up the phone? Molly... the entire conversation consisted of her raising her voice towards me and speaking over me when I was not done speaking. All I wanted was for her to correct our open table reservation. At this point I am on the phone with the worlds most incompetent and rude manager all while trying to cook myself something to eat because at this point it was 9pm and I had not eaten. I just tried to prove a point to her that her restaurant is seriously flawed with what happened to us that evening... I also pointed out that they cannot even get our open table reservation checked in when we came and paid for my wife's meal. So this is proof that they cannot do their job effectively or correctly. She denied everything and offered no sincerity. Let's face it, everyone there is miserable and hates their job. This manager Molly is terrible and I remember her from the Troy location, I don't understand how the company has kept her on so long. Her attitude and lack of any real standards are the examples she sets for the rest of the employees .. She said I can take up my concerns with the GM if I didn't like the way she was handling them.. I told her in closing "your location is perfect then right? When all you had to do was take some accountability for all the errors that occurred with us tonight, you had a chance to try and turn things around. Instead you didn't take any accountability. Your location isn't perfect, in fact corporate has been concerned for some time and considered even changing the restaurants name and concept to a Sister company name and lower price point in hopes this would correct the issues" I think Molly was in shock that I even knew about that inside information, I just politely ended the call after that. J Alexanders is not the same place it used to be and they do not instill the same standards they used to years ago. It's completely different. I remember a day to where you could ask any server for anything and they were more than happy to get it for you. I remember a day they used to pass out those amazing honey croissants and their "very best chocolate cake" was actually a molten lava cake, now it's just a microwaved piece of rubbery sugary cake. All their sides are pre portioned and microwaved now. It's corporates fault for lowering their standards both on food and service, all for the sake of profit. It is such a shame. The food is always great here at j alexanders. I've never had a bad meal. The bar makes tasty drinks as well. I enjoyed my steak which was perfectly cooked and the macaroni and cheese. The Campari tomatoes were a special that I tried. I will not be ordering those again as they lacked flavor and seasoning. It would be better with a little balsamic glaze drizzled on them or SOMETHING to wake them up. My mom loved her prime rib as well. read more

The steak was over cooked and was served as two pieces, which just seemed like some off-cuts that were hanging out on the grill waiting for some sad sap to order carry out so they didn't have to worry about the horrible presentation or quality, despite the upcharge for carry out. I don't penalize restaurants just because it's a chain. Therefore, I give high praises to J Alexander's for serving quality food with excellent service. Price is higher than an average restaurant in this area, but it's reasonable when you consider the nice decor and some tasty creations. Usually, the food is spot on at J Alexander's. I ordered a curbside carry yesterday around 3:30. When I arrived, I parked in the designated area and called. The woman that answered the phone was unfriendly and told me my food would be out shortly and hung up. That was a sign. About 7 minutes later a woman brought my food to the car. She was friendlier. I ordered a veggelie burger, fries and salmon dip. The veggie burger was beyond salty and purple. I know beets are used to make the burger, but this seemed excessive. I could only eat a 1/4 of the burger and my stomach began to hurt shortly after. I was going to just toss it. But, I thought I should take a photo. Very disappointing experience. read more

We ordered online for curbside pickup. We were advised that our order would be ready at 6:34 pm and we headed there, pulled up in the parking lot and called as we were advised. Made the call at 6:37 pm & was told to pull up right in front of the building. We sat there for about 20 mins before I decided to go in. Now with everything going on I gave the restaurant some grace about the long wait. The bigger problem was the order. I asked for no bacon with my baked potato however they put bacon in the same container with the cheese, I didn't receive any butter. The steak was horrible. It was tough & had a horrible taste. The cake taste like it was burnt and soaked grease. The icing didn't taste like cream cheese it was super sweet. It was absolutely gross. I am actually debating on taking the meal back to the restaurant tomorrow. read more

This place gets jam packed on Friday nights so I definitely recommend calling ahead. The two of us couldn't even get a seat at the bar at first but we left and called 30 min later to reserve a table. It became less busy as the night went on and more tables cleared up. Anyway, our server was very personable and sweet. She forgot a few things but quickly alleviated the issues. The food was alright. I remember ordering the steak and fries years ago and it was the most delicious thing I've ever had, with a juicy, tender steak and fries swimming in the left over steak sauce. When I ordered them this time the steak was just okay- too chewy and there wasn't that much sauce. My bf's burger was pretty good, no complaints there. The queso appetizer was very satisfying but I wish the chips were less tack-like. Carrot cake was decent, not sure I would order it again. Service here is excellent and makes the higher price than I usually go for worth it. Our wait person on this visit was excellent. She was attentive without overreaching and made good suggestions and conversation as we ordered. I mostly go for lunch, but recently visited for dinner. At lunch, I tend to stick with one their delicious salads (hello, Thai Kai) and share an appetizer. This time we had calamari, drinks, and full meals. The calamari was good, but the marinara served with it was pretty boring. I was surprised by that as I have come to expect some creativity with their sauces. Still the cosmopolitans were plentiful and beautifully presented, if rather bland, so we took full advantage of the calamari. My companion had the crab cake dinner, which came with french fries. He should have paid attention to the menu because he's not a fan of fries, at all, still he ate quite a few of them, so they must have been delicious -- or he was hungry because he was very disappointed in the crab cakes. In fact, he barely finished one whole one. I had a small taste, and to me they were overly sweet. My dinner was solid, though. A large cut of trout that was beautifully cooked an served with well-seasoned rice and coleslaw. It was so good that my companion was happy to take my leftovers for lunch the next day! We shared a huge slice of carrot cake, which could have easily fed four people. It was delicious warm with a cream cheese frosting. I like the atmosphere at J.
