    Chicken plate
    Simone R.

I purchased the leg special and was deeply disappointed at the plate. The chicken had no taste and looked like they refried them. Also bought two whiting fish plates and it was also tasteless. The sides were straight out of a can, I could taste the metal in the sweet potatoes. I will never eat there again! They don't take pride in what they're serving. Not worth the moneys

We have driven past this little cafe hundreds of times because we live just a few miles down 70. So, we finally decided to give it a try, and we are so glad we did! We enjoyed the lunch specials with seafood and two sides -- hubby got two catfish fillets, and I had catfish with shrimp. The fish was fresh and deliciously crispy fried! The coleslaw and potato salad were also good, and the hush puppies disappeared fast! Note that the place looks a little worn down, and the vibe is definitely "dive" :) But it just reminds us of the kinds of little seafood joints you find on the coast: humble, but fresh and tasty. The counter service was friendly and pleasant, too. For what it is, this is the best kind of place for fried seafood. Not fancy, but definitely downhome. We'll try it again.

Looking at the photos on FB of this place, I just had to try it. We got a fish nugget kids meal w/ fries, a sausage, Whiting sandwich w/ fries, & medium shrimp w/ fries. The service was ok...not overly friendly or rude. The food was fresh. It just didn't have seasoning on the fish or shrimp. They do sprinkle a seasoning on the fries that kind of tasted like taco seasoning. I didn't care for it much. The cocktail sauce was not good either. It didn't taste like any I've ever had before. We also got 2 cake slices from them which were $4.99 ea. We haven't tasted those yet, but I was told they come from Favors, so I know that cake is usually ok. I will update this review if it's not. The building could use some updating. The lot has 5 spaces in the front, but there is somewhere to park if they are ever super busy. I can't say that I will be back. The food just wasn't that good, honestly. I live too far away to be getting food that tastes like this.

Y'all! This fish was so good. I have been in NC for 5 years and I never go to fish places because it's just not cooked the same like where I am from. But my brother is here to visit and he wanted fried fish so I searched and searched and none of the pics were jumping out at me and then I remembered I had passed J & J on the way to Durham one day and I said that I would try it. The parking lot isn't that big but I was able to find a parking space fairly easily there is also a drive through if you don't want to go in. But I saw where the cars were sitting in line and it's because they make the food fresh. So keep that in mind if you want to go through the drive through. When I walked in the place was cool. It's not a fancy place but I wasn't worried about that I just wanted good fish. It took the cashier a minute to come up to the register but when he did I ordered the catfish plate and it came with 2 sides + hushpuppies. We ordered Mac and cheese, collards and fries. I paid about $22 which included fountain drinks. The restaurant + bathroom were decent. There was a server that brought the food and made sure that the tables were cleaned off. They don't refill drinks so everything is kind of self served and all the condiments are on the table. Overall if you are looking for good fried fish, this is your place.

Hey y'all this place is rocking! When i walked in the door i smelled and saw clean!! This place fries a lot of fish and by the scent in the air they use fresh oil. My order was prepared so perfectly i went back for more shrimp to go and got a slice of lemon cake to roll with too! The dessert display if full of great selection of locally made cakes that have a wonderful back story of "redemption" and success!! This is a small local business that's doing it right.. great seafood done right in a super clean & chilled environment! Try this place

Ohh man, I haven't been disappointed with a place like I was with this one since I relocated. I live in Raleigh and drove to Durham just to try this place and called and placed my order before I left my house because I was craving fried fish. I asked the woman if they would still honor the lunch specials 3 different times and she assured me they would. Which was fish and wings for $8.49 simply due to portion size. She then asks what flavor, lemon pepper and Cajun? I asked if I could have both, She said sure. I arrive and the man tells me $15.. I'm like excuse me? Because had I known it wouldn't be granted, I would've selected a different entree. I told him the woman repeatedly told me yes. He pulls her aside and asks if she okayed this, and she told him she did. So he scolded her then made her come tell me it's not possible anymore while he stayed in the back. I'm like no ma'am. You assured me it was fine prior to me driving 30 min to get here. Whatever break down in communication you have is not between you and your manager. She then attempts to tell me she misunderstood me. No not when you just admitted to your boss you authorized it, do not insult me, you know what you said. Now my head is spinning, because I'm upset and angry so I proceed to change my order to the catfish special for $9.99. The manager then says, "Okay since the order is already made, I'll give it to you for the price of the catfish special." Okay that's fine I just need to eat. I was so upset I didn't even check the order before I left and that's something I never do. Huge mistake! Riding in the car and took a bite of chicken and literally my lips went NUMB because they POURED the seasoning ON TOP of the food. Not cooked in it. I couldn't even eat it. The sides literally came out of a can. I literally had to go buy food from somewhere else because it wasn't edible. This was definitely my first and LAST experience.

This is a small restaurant. Majority of the customers that came in were having take-out. I tried the drive through but no one came to the window, so i went inside. I loved that there sanitation score was a 100! I ordered the wings (lemon pepper and hot)which came with a side (fries). It took about 15 minutes. My meal was good, no complaints. The price was even better! I plan to come back and try the seafood.

    J&J Whiting Fish platter

Just left this restaurant and the food was terrible. No seasoning! Green beans straight from the can with no and I mean no seasoning. The yams straight out the can....blane and no, no, no spice! The fish fried but not crispy. The one star was for the lemonade and hush puppies that was pretty good. Whoever is doing the cooking (or should I say opening cans) SHOULDN'T. I read the reviews and thought I would give them a chance. I SHOULD HAVE LISTEN and so should you!

I had the fired chicken sandwhich and fries the first day, a buffalo chicken wrap the second day, and the smoked chicken wings the third day, yes, 3 in a row. That has to say something, especially for me. All lunch items were pretty spot on, although I like a little more vinegar in my slaw than most. That was remedied by the texas pete on the bar. The service staff were all hands on. If the bartender was not there, the manager or a back of the house person was always checking on me. Very nice staff. As far as the ambiance itself, nice setup. Good sized bar, nice big patio, clean indoor and restrooms... all in all, I could not ding them for anything. I need to go to check out the weekend brunch or dinner menu. While one of my friends didn't care for her French Dip, the rest of the table enjoyed theirs. Personally, I found most of the dishes a little on the saltier side, though no one else seemed to notice. Overall, it was a good experience and I'd definitely go back to try more of the menu.

I do, however, expect witnesses to at least resemble the crime scene. The menu lured me in with a Margherita Classico: San Marzano tomato sauce, bufala mozzarella, and basil. I misunderstood. I assumed they meant San Marzano tomatoes, not a tomato sauce salted so aggressively it could preserve Pompeii for another 2,000 years. Americans do love putting sauce on everything, and I can live with that. But a proper Margherita doesn't need to swim. Let the tomatoes do the talking. The basil was fresh and lovely. The "bufala mozzarella," however, appeared to have called in sick and sent its bargain-bin cousin from the discount dairy aisle. If that was buffalo mozzarella, then I'm the Pope. The biggest heartbreak was the dough. It actually looked promising, but instead of light, airy, crisp, and kissed by a wood-fired oven, it had the personality of a yoga mat. Authentic pizza dough should make you smile before you even notice the toppings. Here's the baffling part: this isn't ancient family knowledge guarded by Italian grandmothers on mountaintops. The entire recipe is free. It's on YouTube. Thousands of Neapolitan pizzaioli have practically filmed a master's degree for anyone willing to spend ten minutes watching. The staff was genuinely friendly, the restaurant was clean, and I honestly believe they're trying to do something special. That's what makes this disappointing instead of merely bad. When you advertise authenticity, people expect authenticity--not a pizza that needed a passport just to identify itself. If anyone knows a truly authentic Italian pizza place in Raleigh, please point me there next time. My partner says I should stop trying to emotionally process mozzarella.

The crust could stand to have a little more flavor but overall it was a solid crust. My issue with the food was for $25 on a 8x10 pizza, there should be enough cheese in the mix to cover more than 60% of the pizza. They have a "signature cheese blend" but then 40% of the pizza doesn't get any of it. A bit disappointing. Which gives the value a 2/5 at best. In addition to these two factors I was asked my name for the order when I arrived. The young lady walked off and then I spotted her on her phone in the corner, followed by folding pizza boxes in a different corner. Eventually a gentleman approached with the same question. Wouldn't you know it, my order was sitting right there next to the host stand. Not impressive. The ambiance is a bit pretentious for a place serving pizza which I found to be pretty greasy. The ambiance definitely matches the price so I guess that's what they are going for. The only lot for parking is paid but I suppose that may be the norm for "downtown" Durham. The flavor again was very good, but the value and the competency of the staff are a miss. As a frequent traveler I think I'd explore the other options next time rather than return.
