We haven't been here in many, many years, so I read through some reviews, and we decided to give it a shot for lunch on Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised in all respects! The service was excellent! Very friendly waiter who was very attentive and made sure our drinks were filled and got anything else we might need. The food was delicious! Everything was lightly fried to perfection. My spouse had fried scallops that she said were perfect with fries. I had the white fish and clam strips with a baked potato. The fish was so flakey, and so many of the clam strips were much bigger than I've seen in years, plus no rubbery texture. Both entrees came with slaw. We both had leftovers. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated with a nautical theme throughout, including an actual boat serving as the desk where you pay when leaving. Glad to be able to be outside again to eat out and Yelp about it! It's been a long time since I've visited a Mayflower (others are Burlington, Greensboro and Asheboro). Found this one while in the area and they did not disappoint. My combination was great. I just wish they would allow for substitutions since I don't eat deviled crab and I would've preferred whitefish over flounder. Everything was fresh hot and crispy though. Ordered a Philly cheesesteak & took one bite it tasted like roast beef. Told the manager & he was like I'm gonna have to charge you something. After going back and forth we agreed that he would only charge me for the unseasoned fries that I had to highly decorate with ketchup in order to just eat. Horrible customer service for a restaurant. I ate at Mayflower for lunch and ordered the Tuesday All-day Special - Fried White Fish. It was exactly what I would expect for a fried fish plate. Good portions for the $10.49 price. You can order a baked potato (overcooked) instead of french fries! The hushpuppies were rings so there was lot more crispy surface to them than the nugget shape. The fish was coated in a light, thin batter, seasoned and crunchy. Some sections of fish meat were very thin, some sections were chunkier. The cooking oil tasted fresh and clean. I liked their coleslaw - barely any mayonnaise and seasoned just right. I prefer this Mayflower operation over some other places around Durham that offer fried fish plates. There was only 1 server covering the whole floor while I was eating in the dining room. He was friendly, efficient and observant. Ambience is family-casual - fine for dining alone, too low-brow for a first date. Air-conditioning was strong - afternoon temp was 94-degree outdoors in August. I spent a lot of time looking for even the tiniest of a shred of crab meat of the initial small bite who tasted of only breading and there was none present! The fried shrimp so tiny they must of been salad shrimp converted to fries shrimp. The only Senior Specials are boiled, nauseating. The waitress was very kind. read more

On Friday my partner and I had dinner at Mayflower. Usually the seafood is cooked to perfection, but my fish was not done. The steak was cooked well and tasty that my partner had. So he enjoyed his meal. The other thing was the service. It was the worse service I'd had in a while. The server was not accommodating and never checked to see if we needed anything. It took a while for the food to arrive, thought they would bring out hush puppies to go with all the butter on the table before the meal but they never did. When the meal arrived the server put it on the table, didn't ask if we needed anything else, just laid the ticket on the table and walked away. We ended up getting up to get a takeout box. read more

This restaurant has really gone down in terms of quality of food sold. I Went yesterday around noon and ordered my usual: 2 large flounders and jumbo shrimps. The flounder was small size and the shrimp was old and refried. I inquired if these were large flounder and the server stated yes. My friend is in love with this place but I guess fried seafood is not my thing. If it is yours, then this place is worth a stop. Its fried dishes are definitely flavorful, and I couldn't resist finishing all of my hushpuppies even though I don't like hushpuppies that much. On the other hand, its broiled catfish was really disappointing. I expected the fish to be a little thicker, and have a bit more seafood flavor, but because the fillets were so thin and underseasoned, the dish was underwhelming. I was happy that the waitress gave us a blooming onion appetizer on the house. That was delicious and had a beautiful presentation! Definitely my favorite part of the meal. :) read more

Went here over the weekend for a large gathering my boyfriend's family was having. It was a party of 35+ people and the service was great. They were on top up things with orders, timely with refills and were quick to accommodate any special requests while there were plenty of regular customers in the restaurant as well. I was really impressed with the service. I split an order of cheese fries with my boyfriend because he convinced me they were the best at Mayflower and I was apprehensive, but they were honestly the best cheese fries I've ever had and trust me, he's made me try a lot. I was truly surprised at the quality of food and service for a place like Mayflower. I sampled the hush puppies and baby shrimp and both were really delicious. The only reason I docked this place a star was because several people who came in after us and ordered large entrees received their food first before we got our order of fries which took awhile. But overall, they exceeded my expectations which weren't really high anyways, but they did a fantastic job handling such a large party so I have to give them kudos! read more

You know what I can always use? Chowdah and lobstah. Well, Mayflower XVI Seafood Restaurant doesn't have lobstah, but it has surprisingly good chowdah. Every meal that I have had at Mayflower starts with a bowl of chowdah. At slightly over $5, the price is more than fair. The quantity of clams in the chowder makes it a steal. If I didn't live so far away, I would likely order a bowl every time it's cold, I'm sick, or simply in the mood for delicious clam chowder. In addition to the truly incredible chowder, Mayflower does a terrific job of making your fried seafood favorites. I got scallops, tilapia, fries, and onion rings for $10.99. Look at the picture - this is also a very fair price, if not a complete steal. Make no mistake about it - this is not the place to go if you want to be overwhelmed by luxury. Mayflower is not fine dining, but it doesn't pretend to be. I'm sure they execute the steaks on their menu just fine, but I would feel too bougie ordering that from this restaurant.
