This restaurant earned a review before you even taking a single bite -- and J&J Seafood is exactly that kind of place. We stumbled upon J&J on Yelp while visiting from out of town for a volleyball tournament. The reviews were great, and the fact that it's a standalone, independent restaurant -- not a chain -- made it even more appealing. We were so eager that we pulled up before they even opened and waited in the parking lot. No shame. Here's where we went wrong: we hadn't done our homework. J&J is takeout only -- no dine-in. Since we were heading out of town that same day with no hotel room to return to, sitting down to eat simply wasn't an option for us. We had to make the tough call to find somewhere else. But here's what made all the difference -- the gentlemen who opened that morning were absolutely wonderful. Despite our situation, they welcomed us in without hesitation, made sure we had a place to sit while we figured out our next move, and never once made us feel rushed or like an inconvenience. When we explained we'd have to leave, they were completely gracious and understanding about it. Warm, genuine, and patient -- like a family member who's just happy you stopped by, even without calling first. I left without eating a single thing, and I'm still thinking about this place. Beautiful weather in New Orleans today and decided to have a picnic in my backyard, so of course I stopped by J&J to grab a couple pounds of boiled crawfish and sausage for the occasion. No line, and I could smell the boil from the Main Street! Now, it's still early in the season so it was $8.99/lb but still worth it. Crawfish was juicy, flavorful, with tolerable spice! After hearing some boast about this place. I came there one day close to the Mardi Gras holiday assuming they're busy selling crawfish all day. I had waited 10 minutes in line behind a lady that bought what's left of crawfish they had boiled in the container "about 6lbs" Thinking they had more being boil in the back, but was just told they're sold out. There was an hour and 45 minutes before they were time to close. I believe that's more than enough time to not have a mother batch ready to be taken out to sell. The next time I came was a short line of 5 people ahead of me. I had to wait for about 20-30 minutes. The crawfish was excellent compared to most places I've tried around and cross town but it just wasn't $7.49 good while mostly all seafood stores were $5.99 lbs and under on their price. As a general rule I am drawn towards authentic & locally/family owned restaurants. In New Orleans there are tons of seafood places to choose from and it can be overwhelming. While I was looking through Yelp in my hotel room, J&J Seafood stuck out to me. It is located outside of the normal "tourist" area, is family owned & operated, had great reviews, & wasn't extremely expensive. It was a short 10 minute drive from my hotel. The staff was helpful, conversational, & very nice. I wanted to get a good sampling of what they had to offer and experience a boil while visiting Nola. So I got a pound each of shrimp, crawfish, crab, & potatoes and rounded out my order with corn and sausage. I excitedly drove back the hotel, changed clothes (in case dropped food on my nice clothes), spread out the newspaper, dumped out the food, said a prayer of thanks, & dug in. Man! This was an amazing experience! The food was wonderfully seasoned, very juicy, and perfectly cooked. It was the best crawfish I've ever had and the shrimp was just as extraordinary. First there is no dining inside. Second there is no dining outside. I come from out of state and was told this was the place for crawfish..... When I arrived at 12:15 they said crawfish wouldn't be ready till 1:00. My Uber driver already and I was annoyed but wanted to try it since it was hyped up place from a couple locals. At 1:15 I finally got some crawfish went over to the side where they have a little bar and decided to try a piece of corn while I waited on my ride. I was told I couldn't eat here it was to go only. The crawfish was good but I've had better. The corn and potatoes did not taste fresh out the pot. The sausage was not good at all. While the crawfish is good sometimes, the customer service is horrible. I've been here multiple times. I've had some good experiences, but more negative encounters than good. I value customer service because your food can be mediocre, as many places in New Orleans' food industry can be, but your customer service will keep you in business and will help to set you apart from other places. In addition, it's not a good look to lie about whether or not you have fresh crawfish coming out. Almost everyone's preference would be been to wait for fresh crawfish. After asking, I was told they were done boiling crawfish for the day at 2:15 pm, even they close at 7 pm. Of course after I asked this question and paid, the gentleman that boils the crawfish coincidentally asked his coworkers if they were ready for a new batch to be brought out and of course he was silenced right away. I encourage J&J Seafood to provide a better experience for customers. I personally won't be back, but I do wish them well. read more

Absolutely amazing seafood. I meannn, it was crazyyy. I'm from the Chesapeake Bay Area and used to a certain preparation of seafood. Yeah, it's that good. If you're in the metro area you've got a ton of places to pick from when it comes to good seafood, but these guys are consistently named among the best. They're on Franklin Ave on the Westbank, right near the parish line splitting Orleans and Jefferson. Family owned and operated since 91, you'll see a collection of photos from their nearest and dearest growing up which makes me feel good about spending my money here. The dish that draws most there is the crawfish, expertly seasoned, and left in the water long enough to get nice and "juicy". We took a Lyft over to the West Bank to J&J. We discovered that it was take out only and we were not deterred! We grabbed 8 lbs of crawfish and 2 lbs of shrimp with potatoes and sausage which was good for 4 of us. They assembled a bag and we took it back to the courtyard at our hotel and it stayed plenty hot for the 20 minute drive. Fantastic stuff! It is not overwhelmingly spicy and you can really taste the seasoning (some cloves are in the mix). Highly recommend even if you're just visiting for the weekend.
