It was very oily but also very flavorful and the fillings inside were plentiful and practically spilling out. It was not only delicious but also so large. I used to visit here every week. Their pizza was always very tasty and the crust soft and crispy. Recently during the last year, I have found the pizza to be inconsistent; sometimes good and other times to be dry and tough. After a half a year, I decided to give them a try again. The sausage pie that I ordered last week was good like the old times but this week, it was dry, over cooked and tough. I can see that things haven't changed. From my observation, the inconsistency in the pizza is probably due to the different staff member making the pie. Also, the restaurant tack on a surcharge when using a credit card. From what I remember, it used to be an Italian older gentleman that l owned the shop and the pizza was great. He was a sweet nice guy. The pizzas were hot, thin, crispy ... all that was perfect in how pizza is suppose to be. Today, forget it. Just the attitude of the Spanish guy working there makes you not want the pizza. Ask for a whole pie with half pepperoni. Told me 10 minutes. Okay. About 20 minutes later, asked about the pie. His response, "you'll get it when I have it." NO! If you tell me 10, I'm giving 11. Don't waste my time if you cannot accurately tell me when the pizza is done. We all know it can't be done in 10. Instead of lying and having your customers wait about 35-40 minutes. You should straight up be telling them it will be half an hour. I was with a group of 5 people. One of my other friends wanted to order a pie and the guy just says your all together and used a paper plate to whoosh us aside. Thats terrible. You're not even concentrating on the customer in front of you but all the ones in the back. We're all paying customers. Maybe it's because we're Asian and everyone else waiting was Hispanic. Quality is gone here. I've been a customer of JV for many years. Yesterday I called and placed an order for a whole pie + 1/2 extra cheese. I put a photo of what I received. Not really a review but a reminiscence from my childhood. I lived in that neighborhood until the mid 60s but was back there at least 2 or 3 times a month to visit relatives. I went to grade school at PS48 in the 50s and 60s which was a block for two from J&V I remember walking to that place to get a slice and a Coke for lunch . As I remember a slice in the late 50s was .10 - .15 cents and a coke was a nickle. I also remember the pizza shops having signs up apologizing for having to raise the price to .20 due to the rising cost of Olive oil, yes they used Olive oil. So, the guy was working it, back and forth multitasking while an assistant half his age struggled to keep up. I had the marg. Well. Not the best dough. The cheese though, was the creamiest mozz, maybe burrata, so good. Sauce small fleks of tomato, solid slice except for cooking time. I think a new guy was just learning. BUT. The Sicilian, which I should have gotten in the first place, was perfect. Heaven. The dough was chewy, springy, crisp at the bottom, the sauce yes, the mozz the heavier chewier type, perfect perfect. This is the one to order here. Things change, the neighborhood has been full of Chinese stores for awhile now. So? So what. This is Brooklyn not Italy. Get some Chinese pastries after. After a false start, I made my way out here to give J & V a try, as they are the competition to Da Vinci pizza out in good old Bensonhurst. Like Da Vinci, J & V is easily accessible by subway, as it is literally outside the 18th Ave station on the N train. I got $15 worth of food, three items. Is it worth it? Keep reading to find out. Plain slice The plain slice here is better than Da Vinci. The crust is cooked perfectly. There is a nice amount of herbs to make this slice more than just cheese, tomato, and bread. The sauce is light, but it adds a beautiful touch to the herbs. It is a simple but well balanced slice through and through. Sicilian slice As with above, this is also a well balanced slice. The seasoning on top of the cheese is not overwhelming, and the application of the cheese is not over the top either. The crust is ideal for a Sicilian square, in that it is fluffy, chewy, and crunchy. It simply does not feel like a misery when you eat it. Chicken Jojo I am calling a spade a spade here. This is a chicken parm sub cut differently. I did not find much to like or dislike, other than that it is pretty dense and goes down like a truck on the highway. It will put you to sleep, like in a coma, if you let it get to you. But do not expect an experience eating this. Save your money and get the pizza. On the whole, I liked this place. I stopped by J&V on a Saturday afternoon post-grocery shopping for a slice. I heard great things about this pizzeria, a neighborhood institution since the 50s, and thought that J&V served a great, classic slice ($3). The crust was perfectly crispy and the tomato sauce was mild but sweet. This is definitely a slice that is comparable to that of Joe's, the joint I use as a benchmark for quality in NY-style slices. I've been eating at J&V since I was a kid cuz I grew up just 2 blocks away on 19th Ave. The place used to be good and respectable. But that was in the '90s. Now 30 years later, I'm grown and visit my parents on the weekends and stopped by J&V's to pick up a few slices for my drive back to Williamsburg. I had my phone on record cuz I stopped by the Chase bank on 65th and witnessed a 16 wheeler ran a red light and almost hit a mom and his kid at the corner. My phone continued recording when I watched and recorded the guy dropped one of the 2 slices on the counter, then picked it up with his bare hands and shoved it into the pizza box. I asked him point blank if it's my slices that he dropped and he said no and continued to wipe off the counter. I have the video and I still have the pizza because I am not eating that shit that was dropped on the counter where there's dust, bacteria and germs from all the touching and money placed on that counter. You don't serve that shit to people. You grab a new slice and heat that up and give that to the customers and throw away the slice you dropped. Instead, when I asked if that was my slice you dropped on the counter, you said no and lied to my face when I was just standing there and watched you dropped it point blank. Luckily it was around 3:30pm on a Friday and called New York State Department of Agriculture and Market's Food Complaint and filed a complaint. They asked if I have the video and the pizza and I said yes. Well, I just got home from their office. They made a copy of the video and took the pizza for bacterial analysis. Had pizza here for the first time last year and had the most amazing experience ever! The staff is the older traditional crowd where greeting isn't a thing. More of "Hey, can I help you?" Or "You ready to order?". Totally fine with me since they're behind that counter with ovens blazing hot all day. Last year, the buffalo chicken pizza was SOOOO GOOD. I could eat an entire pie of it but this year, the size had shrunk in size and oddly, I think there were ranch/mayo dolloped on certain areas of my pizza. Still good, but I wish it was better. Veg pizza, last year it was a huge slice and this year, it was super thin but with a decent amount of toppings. I finally got to try the Chicken Jojo which is chicken parmesan inside garlic bread. The pizza is solid new york pizza. Much less flavorful than it used to be. This used to be this best now they seem to just use the bottom of the tomato paste can and add water and prepare it. Also they lie about the prices. One day my sister called it was 24 a square and 17 round as advertised as their updated online menu and then one day i order its 20 a round 27 a square. They just try to rob you. Its not bad pizza but slices are very tasty while whole pies taste shitty. Its sad the best became the worst, sad for their legacy, their business and just the value.
