We visited as a stop on Scott's Pizza Bus Tour, which meant we were actively evaluating it against some of the best pizza in the city. Evaluating pizza on a tour is tricky because excellence becomes relative when you are eating multiple high-end pies in a single afternoon. According to Scott, Brooklyn DOP began in founder Thomas Ardito's apartment during the 2020 lockdowns. With his primary work on pause, he started baking pizza and selling pies through Instagram to pay his rent. People kept ordering. His friend Jason D'Amelio joined the effort, and what started as an apartment project turned into pop-ups and eventually a brick-and-mortar shop on 5th Avenue in Park Slope. That is a considerably more compelling origin story than a corporate franchise business plan. The setup in Park Slope includes a quiet back courtyard, which offered a comfortable spot for our group to sit, eat, and recover between stops. It feels relaxed and distinctly Brooklyn without trying too hard to remind you where you are. The pizza itself is very good. The crust strikes a proper balance between a crisp bottom and a chewy interior. The toppings are handled with care, from the crushed tomatoes to the fresh mozzarella. This is dough crafted by people who take fermentation seriously rather than relying on pre-packaged shortcuts. On its own merits, the pizza is a solid 4.5 stars. Unfortunately for Brooklyn DOP, it was competing on a tour against places operating on another plane. It is an excellent pie, but it was not the single slice that caused the entire tour to fall silent in collective awe. Still, that is an aggressive standard to hold against any local shop. Brooklyn DOP offers a great courtyard, a serious approach to dough, and a standout product. Landing just shy of five stars says far more about the sheer volume of elite pizza we ate that day than it does about the shop itself. Four stars. And if you are not spending the afternoon riding around New York with Scott Wiener eating pizza at some of the finest pizza joints the 5 boroughs have to offer, you can probably bump that half-star back up.

Lots of seafood and the pasta was fantastic! Nice bottle of wine at a reasonable price. Good service. Frankly, I think the prices were cheaper than what I pay in Austin area, and the food and venue were authentic and much better than in Texas!

My cousin posted the review and it was not recommended but needs to be seen so here it is again I have lived around the block from this establishment all my life which is 29 years. I came here as a little girl with my mom and continued to order and pick up food thru my adult life. Earlier this year I wrote a very fair and honest review. Suddenly a month ago when my sister came into the store for a salad she was confronted by Mikes son about this review placed 6 months before. He had a problem because the review mentioned how rude Mike the owner was. Let's clear this up. Mike has been a very rude and disheartening man for 25 yrs. His son claimed that he may have a bad day because he is 80 . This is not the case. This man has been nickel and diming customers for years, even to the point where he wouldn't allow my mother a cup of luke warm water to take a pill because he wanted her to buy the bottle, even though we just ate lots of pizza there. This man when ordering on the phone is a disgruntled disrespectful man and has been since he was 60 yrs old. This is not just for us. This is a neighborhood joke. We all say perhaps this is why he doesn't answer the phone anymore. I tutor and babysit in the area and ps.186 school is full of people who wish the food at Mikes was accompanied by better service. His son is very combattive, dismissive and rough just like him. My sister explained over and over that it was her sister who wrote a review and tried to explain as much as she could but he wasn't hearing any words over his own. So that was done and we continued on with our lives and then decided a couple weeks later to order again. We get A LOT of food from here. But instead of being grateful our support was met with two of the most disgusting dinners Ive seen. Almost as if this was payback they gave us ravioli parm that had a piece of stringy clumpy cheese in the CORNER of the dish (not on the food), and tortellini that was less than half of what is usually given. The sauce tasted like pure water with red food coloring as if they washed the food in water first. And the tins were spilling over opening at the seam. DISGRACEFUL. You wonder why your review was bad? Look at the s*** you're serving. Our other sister reached out thru Facebook and they agreed to refund. Obviously. So all in all Mike is a hit or miss. Sometimes the heroes and salads are great and worth the price. I have had chicken parm with tortelini filled to the top and got bread butter and parm on the side when I ask. Other times they decide to give you crap as explained above cause they're lazy that day. Mike has always been rude , even when you walk in he looks like he doesnt want you there, this is something PTA mothers are constantly talking about as the place is around the block from the school and no one can figure out why this man is such a lousy grouch and his son seems to carry this attitude as well. This pizza place was here for so many years I remember going to Ps 186 and coming here after school!!! I since moved out of state but then stumbled upon reviews recently about mike. I remembered it was true he was always so oddly mean, all the kids at school were scared of him and used to play Papa mike at lunch recess which is where one kid runs around like a monster and pretends to be big scary mike. I remember my mom and I came a lot with other moms and my friends and we ordered lots of pizzas, italian ices, and snapples and then since I prefered water and there was no water bottles then my mom asked for water. Mike screamed at her and said " donta keepa gettin a water", it was a small cup of warm water from the sink. Hes a nasty man is right and if a child wasnt lets just say.... his complexion then forget it u wont get served. Anyway I came in the other day while visiting bensonhurst to see my parents and walked in. The guys still there! The pizza was good! Same as always. We used to go when the place was next door w orange seats but now its new and dark and kinda cute. Amazing fresh cheese packed baked calzone. But papa mike is still the same. Papa mike is the rudest pizza shop owner i have ever met. This place has been around my neighborhood since I was a child. As a life long New Yorker I know good pizza. Also being a traveler I also have met many great people from all over. I have never seen such rudeness from a man in my life. Complete disconnect discontent and similar manners as the soup nazi from Seinfield ( only that guy carried some culture with him). Papa Mike needs an attitude adjustment and has needed for years. Pizza is average prices are as well, of course as many italian places in America overwhelming portions. But one thing has never changed this guy shoos customers away for years and wonders why his constant remodeling never surfaces the kind of business that surrounds his establishment. The calzone here is renowned. With flavor, size, preparation and creativeness, this is really a gem! Heros are delicious and well priced a great go to. Bread and fillings much better than others. Ask for the calamari parm for a special treat! Easy delivery straight on their website but not on grubbub seamless ,eat 123 or even delivery.com for some reason Pizza is adequate nothing special. Behind the counter could use some work, these men are all over the place, delivering to the wrong address, mistaking pick up for delivery, just a complete mess. Papa mike used to have a very rude and mishap attitude for a business man but has improved recently in his old age. Never too late to change! read more

Good food but hit or miss. One day the sauce is yum one day its sweet. One day the chicken parm is perfect one day its salty. We always get the specials that they offer and it is a pretty good deal. The pizza isn't the best but better than most places for takeout. Our favorite item is the truffle fries! They're always cooked to perfection and crispy. The worst part about ordering from here is the wait time. They're never on time and always come after the latest time stated.
